Lemon blueberry pancakes a la mode
Erik S.

We ended up at Elmo's Diner as we were traveling through Durham, and the place we originally intended to go had a massive wait, so found our way just up the street here. Even though there were people waiting, it's a large place and people were being taken care of very efficiently, so it was only about 15 minutes for us. Walking in, you can tell Elmo's Diner is steeped into the fabric of Durham's culture, and particularly Duke University. Has the vibe of a place that has been long enjoyed but multiple generations. Once we got seated, service was very efficient and we had hot food in front of us within 15-20 minutes which was excellent, since we had a road trip ahead. We both ordered specials, and I can't 100% remember their names for each. Hers was a lemon blueberry pancake platter, which she would have liked with a strong lemon flavor, but I thought was just right. Mine was a breakfast bowl, but unlike any I've been served before. The base was cornbread, sweet potatoes, and black beans and from there you had eggs, sausage, avocado, red chile sauce, sour cream, and pico. It was truly delicious, and a flavor combination I wasn't sure about when ordering, but after the first bite was totally ready to devour. Nary a bite was left. I would definitely recommend this spot!

Elmo's is the diner you have been looking for. We stopped by on a Saturday morning for breakfast. We were lucky, because a line formed after we were seated, so get here early. Our server, Megan, made sure we had hot coffee and tea in a flash. She also checked back several times to keep our cups topped off and hot. She was wonderful. I had the Greek omelet, with spinach, feta, kalamata olives and tomatoes. I also had a side of home fries, grits and a beautiful biscuit. My wife selected the farmers omelet and my daughter had the gorgeous biscuits with gravy. Everything was served hot and fresh. In fact, I have to say that this is one of the best diner breakfasts we have ever had. I hope to return to Durham, because this will be on the top of my list. Well done Elmo's. You have set the diner bar very high. Your food and service is top notch and made our visit to Durham that much better!

Great Sunday Brunch place. The service was great and friendly. The food was very good and tasted fresh. Highly recommend if you are close to the school that shall not be named

My child's school had a "Mursday" fundraising opportunity so we went for breakfast. Such large portions at such great prices! Service was quick on a Thursday morning. Our server was friendly and attentive. I had the California omelette which was good but I think next time I'd add some cheese in it. My omelette also came with home fries and toast - I was stuffed by the time we left!

We intended to go elsewhere for lunch, but that place was closed for vacation, so we hit up Elmo's. We hit it at the right time and got parking and a table immediately!! Our waitress came over promptly for the drink orders. I got the chicken burrito and my spouse an omelet with taters and a massive biscuit. Everything tasted great and we both had a ton of leftovers. Yes, I'll always miss Ninth Street Bakery in this spot and their menu and wish Elmo's hadn't redesigned the main dining area when they moved in, but what can you do. Time changes almost everything.

I'm pleased by Elmo's Diner but not pleased enough to go here very often. The portions are not big and the menu is not very interesting.

Everyone I've spoken to loves this place. They say it's the best breakfast spot around. We couldn't wait to try them. Parking is horrible but it's free. We parked on the street and walked. Once inside it was packed. It's cozy and charming inside. They have a lot of options. We had pancakes, sausage, grits and a breakfast bowl. The bowl had a lot going on. Cheese, sausage, eggs, beans, avocado and more. It was okay. My grits were thin and the pancakes were okay. Overall everything was just okay nothing amazing.

A great diner with a bit of a wait time on the weekends but fully worth it. They have so many great options and it's truly such reliably good food. The staff was very nice and they have cute coloring pages too!

I got a pistachio iced latte which was tasty and refreshing in the warmer room and the strawberry banana Nutella crepe was good. My friend got a curry chicken crepe and she said it was pretty spicy and we had run out of water. The reviews were glowing, and repeatedly warned about the wait, that my expectations were probably set too high going in. I got the steak and eggs crepe and added avocado, extra steak, and kale. The eggs sit on top, and mine came closer to over-hard than the over-medium I asked for -possibly from sitting in the to-go box for 15 minutes, so I'll give some benefit of the doubt there. The crepe itself was tasty, and honestly I'd come back to try something off the sweets menu. But the fillings didn't land. The steak was a little chewy, and the mushrooms were cut too thick for a crepe -- they made it hard to cut cleanly and felt out of place. The add-ons I'll leave alone since those were my call. Overall the dish felt fairly run-of-the-mill against the hype. One note: this might be a dish better served by not allowing customizations, to keep it consistent to its intent. What threw me is that "steak and eggs" is the menu item, yet they also offer a carne asada crepe with no eggs ...so the only real difference is eggs placed on top, which doesn't change the crepe itself. Felt clear as mud after unboxing my meal. The latte I got was standard. Nothing wrong with it, nothing memorable. TL:DR this read as a solid fallback breakfast more than the must-try the reviews promised. The dogs I saw at the outside tables kept this closer to a 3.5 than falling on the other side of 3.

This place is located in the downtown area of Durham on the second floor of a red brick building. There is plenty of patio, bar and dining room seating. It was a little hot for the patio so we sat at one of the tables in the dining room. The menu offers a handful of appetizers and salads, as well as about twenty lunch entrees. I went with the NC pulled pork sandwich. It also had coleslaw on the sandwich. Side options included fries, salad, Brussel sprouts, or onion rings. I went with the brussel sprouts and they were very tasty. My husband had the patty melt with French fries. The fries were a generous and tasty portion. His patty melt was very salty, though. Service was pretty quick.

This new East Durham location is a little smaller than the old one, but they kept the brick aesthetic and the same jazz décor; it has great vibes, but it can get a little noisy with large groups. They now have a small parking lot. The new building has charm, although the surrounding area feels industrial and somewhat run-down. One of the restaurant's windows was boarded up, broken glass had spread into the parking-lot entrance, and barbed wire was visible from our table. The chicken is always tangy and moist. I don't know what they put in the breading, but I'm like a moth to a flame to that stuff. The mac and cheese is some of the best in the Triangle. Our server, Lanyah, was a hustler! While there, she had 9 tables, and one of them was a large group of about 10 people. My wife and I each ordered A Classy Hen with a Baby Blueberry and a Peach Apricot Shmear. I liked the Peach Apricot better. My wife got fresh fruit as her side, which was mostly just orange slices. This, unfortunately, is the end of any positives. Because it was just Lanyah, the service was slow, and it appears from our various times coming to Dame's that slow service is the rule, not the exception. Our server said that it was typical to have just a single server, one cook, and a busser--who was not that helpful. Lanyah was still busing some tables and when there was a loud crash that sounded like dishes falling, she ran and checked on it herself. It took her a minute to get us water and then take our order, but it was understandable. She hugged my wife when we were leaving when we told her she deserved better. The cook was doing their best, but it took 48-minutes and 49 seconds to get our order after it was put in...yes, I timed it. One family walked out due to the long wait. There was another male staff member-I'm not sure whether he was the manager, but he spent most of the evening sitting in the bar area. He was not seating people, bringing out orders or drinks, or helping out our overwhelmed server. They were supposed to close at 7:30pm, but we walked out the door at 8:05pm and the large party was still there waiting for their food, with the other man still sitting in the bar. We want to love Dame's, but slow service just overshadows everything else that is positive. Until they hire an appropriate number of staff, we will not be back.
