Stopped by Elm St Bakery for the first time today after it was recommended to me. Based on other reviews I got a slice of ricotta pie, some scali bread, and a chicken parm calzone. I also got a slice of tiramisu. Anyone with allergies should be aware that the staff aren't knowledgeable and this isn't the sort of place where anything is labeled, nor do they have a list of ingredients to refer to. I took a gamble on the tiramisu even though they weren't 100% sure that there wasn't amaretto in it (I'm allergic to almonds). That worked out okay and it was tasty, though having gotten tiramisu at Antoine's Pastry Shop in Newton the size is pretty disappointing (around 1/3 the size of Antoine's slice). I also took a gamble on the chicken parm after asking if all of the calzones had garlic in them (I'm allergic). They told me they didn't think that the chicken parm did, just maybe a little garlic powder, which I don't react to. I should have known better. After I got in the car I realized it smelled pretty strongly of garlic and the first bite had a crunchy piece of garlic in it. :( The ricotta pie had some flavor in it that I haven't encountered with other ricotta pies and I didn't enjoy it. The scali bread was the standout - fresh and soft. They make it with or without sesame seeds (I got without). I had picked it up for an Italian American relative and she said it tasted exactly as good Italian bread should. We had some slices with butter and then toasted some for tuna salad sandwiches. I will definitely go back and try other things but I'll be more careful about not getting anything next time if there's any question about what ingredients might be in it. They do take credit cards but there is a $10 minimum. read more

Elm Street is the BEST! They are my go to for cakes and desserts for all events. Their prices are fantastic, the food is always fresh and absolutely delicious. Every single time I get one of their cakes, everyone wants to know where it's from. We love the gold cake with strawberries and whipped cream frosting, absolutely out of this world. Love Elm Street, a bit too much!!! Once a week I get the Scali bread, it's the most authentic and delish bread around, and I have had Scali from every bakery on the North Shore. Italian cookies, cannolli, cupcakes, lemon squares and assorted pastry is my regular purchases from Elm Street. Their chocolate cakes are a must! Everything I have bought here has been baked fresh. I live in Medford and drive to Everett it's that great a place. One thousand times better than Modern Pastry and others in Medford. read more

Each time someone has a birthday in my family that day we are allowed to pick our favorite restaurant as well as a cake from our favorite place, my favorite is definitely this place hands down! I was so happy to find this little bakery, however my waistline wasn't! I went in to grad some lobster tails for my husbands birthday and walked out with a huge box of things. This review is not about the taste of cake. Cake is awesome as usual here but my last experience was not pleasant at all. I and my husband went there last week to order cake for my son's 5th birthday which was yesterday. We had space theme party but they did not have space theme cake so I picked the cake which seems pretty close with night sky color with white dots which kind of looks like stars. One downside with the cake design was it had start war character on top of it so we told the lady who was taking order that we are doing space themed party so we don't want any character on it. Could you make it without any character just to give a look of night sky with stars and she discussed with the other lady who was working on a register and said ya we can do that. We paid full amount on the same day. Yesterday when my husband went to pickup cake they made it with start war character as in the picture and the color was purple instead of dark blue. We were so disappointed because it just ruined our themed party. We spent so much money to make this party completely space themed but at the end the cake was completely different. Absolutely appalled by the customer Sevice I encountered. I ordered a specific cake for a photo shoot for my daughters cake smash pictures for her first birthday. I called over the phone and explained how I wanted it, paid for it and was looking forward to getting the cake being that myself and my family have gone to elm st for years and typically love it in there. When I picked up the cake it wasn't at all like I ordered, so I mentioned that and asked if I could fix it. Before I could explain anything one woman there stared yelling saying "no refunds, it's people like you that will make us go out of business, you're looking for something for free." I replied excuse me, this is how you speak to an unsatisfied costumer who's been coming here her whole life, I have money thanks I'm not looking for a hand out I just want the cake to look right for a special photo shoot for my daughter. She replied I've worked here for 30 years I've never seen you. Another woman there was very nice and wanted to help and had the cake sprayed pink bc initially it was all white which was not what I asked when I ordered it. The other angry woman then said you should have paid for the spraying and I said it was your mistake that you made the whole cake white and by trying to fix the mistake I should pay for it? There was also green frosting everywhere which wasn't one of the colors I wanted so that was the main issue and I was hoping they could fix that frosting but she said nope there's nothing we can do. It wasn't about money at all, I was hoping at the very least she would offer to fix it, not yell at me, call me a liar and berate me, the customer, mind you while I was holding my 1 year old daughter the entire time. Then she said get her out of here to the other woman, give her a " 7 inch cake and have her leave." Unbelievable rude. My family and I have gone here for years for so many different occasions and I am still shocked this is how a neighborhood bakery treats a life long customer. read more

An amazing little bakery. A lot of variety and the calzones are very well made. Only issue I could see would be the freshness of some of their cakes. I live in California, but lived in Everett, most of my life!! I have lived in Cal for 42 years. I miss the pastry, pizza, and great food of the area. My daughter and I had my cousin ship us your gourmet italian cookies for Christmas. Wow they are as I remember them. Ok, this rating doesn't reflect their baked goods - those are, for the most part, excellent and I would give them at least 4 stars. This review is for our last experience there. My boyfriend and I rushed there after work to get a cake for his mom's b-day, and all the other necessities (cookies, half moon, etc.). We stocked up and then went to our car, parked in the rear parking lot, at around 6:57 to figure out where to go next. Parking lot was empty except for a few other cars and us looking at yelp trying to figure out what to get for dinner when a woman pulled up next to us to tell us this is private parking and we had to leave. I was a little confused, thought maybe it was the spot I was in, and so moved. The the same woman got out of her car and walked to our window. She said it was a private lot for the bakery and we couldn't park there to go across the street. I told her we did just go to the bakery, she said "no, you didn't" and I offered to show her the cake I had in the back. She then answered her phone and asked us to move since we were blocking her way out, with no apology. It was then that I recognized her as the woman I saw behind the counter just moments before (the owner?). I moved and then saw the Central American bakery across the street she was probably referring to. I'm Mexican-American and dark-skinned - I didn't appreciate the assumption or her rudeness and will not return, no matter how inexpensive and delicious the items are. I only gave this place 3 stars because the young ladies that they have working there need a course in better customer service. I ordered a cake for my Nieces birthday and i told the young lady, maybe 16 years old, that this is not what i ordered. I wanted the cake to look a certain way and she rolled her eyes at me, and said well sorry this is how they do the birthday cakes here....WTF!!! Well since my nieces bday was in a half hour, i was stuck with a cake that i didn't like. Called and left my complaint and to have the baker call me back...Never did..I'm NEVER GOING BACK THERE! DO NOT GO TO THIS BAKERY! I personally went into Elm Street Bakery to order my grandson's baptism cake on a Monday and gave a deposit for the cake. I received a phone call from the owner on Saturday, a day before my grandson's baptism stating they made a mistake in the price of the cake and I need to go there and give them more money for the deposit of the cake and there was going to be a additional cost of $60.00 for the cake. I could not believe a mistake like this was made even going into the bakery in person to place my order. The owner of Elm Street Bakery needs a course in customer service, she basically said DO YOU WANT THE CAKE OR NOT in a tone that wasn't very nice she would not honor the price her sales person gave me and also wanted me to come there ASAP with more money for a deposit, she already had a $25.00 deposit from me. I live nearby and shop at Elm Street Bakery a lot..... I will never return into that bakery ever again. The owner is the absolute the worst person to deal with EVER!!! Bought a pre-packaged thing of assorted Italian cookies here recently. Upon selecting one of the Italian chocolate cookies to eat I noticed a very odd taste after biting into it. I thought maybe it was just my tatstebuds were a little off so I then selected another different cookie to eat and noticed the same funny rancid taste. The cookies were not stale but rather they had an odd rancid taste to them. Still thinking it was me, I had 2 other family members each taste a cookie and they experienced the same bad taste and my brother even denoted a funny smell coming off of the cookies as well. We all kind of agreed that the rancid taste/odor seemed to be coming from a bad nut based oil ingredient of some sort. Brought them back to the bakery the following day and 2 very RUDE women stated that they did not detect anything bad about the cookies. My money was not refunded and the cookies are still with me until my next trip to Everett City Hall to speak to the Inspectional Service Dept. I am not writing this review out of revenge or anger just writing it to inform/warn other patrons to be careful with this place. Something is definitely not right here. read more

I went to Elm St. bakery right at closing yesterday, and I happened to sight the owner and mouthed silently "I love you" I think she was a bit taken aback, as I am a 60 plus American Muslim wearing the full garb, but there was no time to tell her my true feelings and I wanted her to just feel what she deserves. I can't tell you how much I love this place. I have been eating bakery products my entire life, especially Italian bakeries, as they are the best. This place is hands down superior in every way. What an a cheivement for a woman to make so many people happy on a consistant basis!!! It can't be easy, but she manages it. and looks quite beautiful at that!!!! read more

Watch out when you order a cake from them....make sure you ask how many the cake feeds before you order! Who ever answers the phone sells you way more cake than you need!!! Then when you bring it to their attention they make you feel like it's your fault...poor customer service! read more

The owner of this establishment has absolutely no proper business etiquette! I bought what was supposed to be a strawberry shortcake with whipped cream frosting. The girl working at the bakery told me that's what it was. I specifically asked for that and said I did not want the sugury frosting because none of us like that and it was for my sisters birthday party. She assured me of the cake. When we cut into it at the party, it was a red velvet cake with sugary frosting on top. No one ate it and it was a waste. I called the bakery and kept playing phone tag with the girls who worked there. They said I had to speak to the owner. I kept trying to get a hold of her and had left the message to call me multiple times. Finally I went there in person, the owner was very rude and insisted what I was given was the strawberry shortcake, insinuating I do not know what I'm talking about. She refused to give me a refund. It was only $15, but it was the principal! Myself and my coworkers order from here all the time, definatly will not be doing that anymore after the way I was treated! read more

First let me say that their pastries are good, but when it comes to special orders, very disappointing. I went into the bakery on Thursday to bring a picture in for them to print and put on my father's 80th birthday cake. When I went in today (Sunday) to pick it up - no picture was put on the cake. I was so upset that I took my money back and left the cake. This is a special birthday and I wanted a special cake. IF you choose to do a special order, I HIGHLY suggest you call a day before to ensure they understand what you are ordering and that they are capable of doing what you paid for. I have the family gathering today and my brother will be stopping at his bakery to get a cake w/no picture. I would have used his bakery - D'Orsi's in Peabody, but their printer is broken. I doubt I will go back to Elm St. In fact, Luberto's in Revere has great pastries, too, so I'll go there in the future. read more

I placed an order for cupcakes on a Monday before Easter to pick up that Saturday morning at 8am and had TWO employees confirm that it was ok and it's all set. That Saturday morning after waiting in line for a little over an hour which I expected and was ok with, I was told my cupcakes were not ready and they should not have taken my order and was given an attitude by an older woman. I was shocked but said they did in fact take my order 5 days prior and asked how much longer and was told 5 minutes. Twenty minutes later I asked again how much longer and I either need my money back or the cupcakes. Simple as that. I placed an order on Monday, cupcakes are not ready after an hour and a half of waiting so now I'm getting annoyed and the same older woman who I've recognized from years of going here informed me in front of everyone that a new girl took my order and shouldn't have, life is too short and to pretty much get over it. I'd love for her to explain to my 5yr old son that life is too short kid so even though your mommy ordered cupcakes on a Monday for Saturday 8am pickup they just shouldn't have so tough. It was beyond disgusting and rude. Elm St. has a good reputation and I know people from all over that go to Elm St. and I've gone for 30 years but you just lost a life time customer. After handing the cupcakes to another customer to give to me and yelled "Good" When I said never again will I do this, well you got your wish and ALL my family and friends who live both in the city and outside the city and have given you business for years will no longer. Doesn't matter who you are or how busy you are, what's right is right and I'm a customer and only asked for my order or my money back. Shame on you, you know who you are. read more

CUSTOMER BE AWARE!!!! I ordered a cake via telephone on Thursday morning at 11:30 for the following day Friday evening at 6pm. This place was recommended to me as I drove from NEW YORK for my great nephews birthday party. I talked to the lady on the phone for about half hour telling her how important this was and the distance I was coming so that there wouldn't be enough time for me if any problems arrose to get another cake. They staked their bakery everything would be fine. WELL WELL... I got to the bakery and first thing the cake was not decorated, nor was it the correct color trimming. Then lets not even talk penmanship; you would think my 4 year old grandson wrote the message!!! Picture this; no decoration on a half sheet white cake and then the HORRIFIC writing began in the middle of the cake and then down, leaving the top completely blank and blah :-( When we went to cut the cake for the 50 plus guest WOW it was the wrong cake!!! I called the "owner" this morning to talk about my problem and she unbelievably tried to talk down to me and tell me that the cake was correct and that it was a yellow cake it just looked white because of the eggs! NEEDLESS to say she is quite an IDIOT and I told her that I have a bachelors degree from Suffolk University; I know what yellow and white are. They definitely gave me the wrong nasty dry plain cake without decorations and horrific writing. She also refused to refund me any of my money back even though the cake was 98% untouched. I WILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN AND HAVE ALREADY TOLD EVERYONE AT THE PARTY AND MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS ABOUT THIS BAKERY!!!!!!!!!
