I used to live just down the street and every morning they made me hungry with the wonderful scent of their fresh bread being baked mere feet away! Their Scaly bread is second-to-none. Their selection is almost always expansive. Some have mentioned that their quality has gone down recently. Well, I've been coming here since 1998 and they are as fabulous now as they were then in my book. A couple of weeks ago in late October, we got a selection of all kinds of cakes and danish. So after getting some great food across the street at Stewart's. We always drive and look to see that's it's closed so we finally had the chance to go in. What a selection in macaroons, just so many selections on them. The selection on pastries is amazing, just an insane variety from tiramisu to cheesecake. Well, I could say it is the good prices, or the friendly service, or the fact that this place is an institution in Everett but, while all these things are true, the real reason I love Elm Street Bakery is because they serve the absolute best calzones in the entire world - hands down. Have I eaten every calzone ever prepared in the world? Well, no, but the notion of a better calzone existing is unlikely, especially if we're talking about chicken or eggplant parmiagana calzone. These things are like big socks of love. Their chicken is tender and delicious and the way the cheese and the sauce are absorbed into the fluffly, bready goodness is enough to make me weep. The eggplant is breaded and meaty. The dough to filling ratio is perfection in and of itself and the fact that I can get a honking calzone that could easily serve four as a main meal for $8.00 - only adds another twinkle to my eye as I ponder Elm Street Bakery's claim on my affections. I have not tried many of the bakeries in Everett. So when my friend wanted me to bring a pound cake (I don't bake out of love), I decided this bakery seemed like the best option. It's pretty easy to find given big sign out front and the smell in the air was promising as I walked from my car to the door. I asked the friendly teenaged girl behind the counter in they had any pound cake but they didn't. They did however have a lemon cake that looked like a pound cake with lemon curd in the middle and a yoke sized gallop on top. Just in case the cake was not to my friends liking (I enjoy being wrong), I got two mini cannoli. If you pay with card your order has to be over $10 or you can pay with cash. I also bought a box of some cookies that reminded of the ones I liked as a kid. My grand total was just over twelve bucks. I should note here that I do not like most cake, it tastes like surgery white bread to me with sugar on top. But when you ask for cake I'm bringing you cake. I have to admit though I was skeptical about how that lemon curd would taste, it was very good. I ate my whole slice of cake. The mini cannoli was the real star, I would happily eat it over it's more famous versions produced in the North End. The cookies were pretty good as well. My family has been going here for years and it used to be one of the better bakeries in the Boston area. It's still a good bakery, but I've noticed that it has gone downhill a little. For example, their mocha cakes used to be relatively large and they used real raspberry jam, but they cut the size down and are now using a red jello like substance that doesn't even taste like raspberries. Their flat tires used to be phenomenal. The ones I got were undercooked and tasteless. Some of their other baked goods are still excellent. I hope they turn it around. read more

I have to agree... they have some of the best pastries!! I drive all the way from Cambridge to Everett just to get their goodies for birthdays and special occasions. I don't like run cake but their rum cake is amazing! Nice and Moist And while I don't like whipped creamed frosting (especially when their sugar frosting is so amazing), I do LOVE their whipped cream frosting. I just bought one(rum cake/whipped cream frosting) for my parents 42 anniversary and I actually enjoyed the combination. In fact... it was probably a healthier choice and I did get to enjoy the sugary flowers and trimming... just enough not to be too much. The eclairs there are amazing!!! Rich flavorful chocolate and real eclair filling... They put their heart and soul in this place and you can tell. They have a great assortment of mini pastries, cakes and Italian Cookies... as soon as you walk in you smell the awesomeness that is their bake shop!!! Be prepared as you enter. Wonderful Italian neighborhood bakery around the corner from a hockey rink where my son's team had several games this year. I always explore the neighborhoods around such rinks in the hour before each game while my son's team gets ready. I discovered this place while doing that, and lots more in this interesting area. SHOULD BE NO STARS!!! DO NOT GO HERE!! They made my cake with the wrong color, which was important for this occasion, and could not fix it when I picked it up because the baker had left already. When I'd ordered the day before, I had even shown a picture of a cake I'd purchased there previously, to show the exact color I wanted again. They apparently wrote down a different color. Then the cake itself crumbled apart with every piece. Half of it stayed on the tray when trying to serve. I was completely embarrassed at the event. But the worst part of all of this was that rather than apologize for the problems and offer to rectify, the owner DENIED they had done anything wrong. I even brought in the leftover cake and you could see the huge gaps along the cut edge and he told me it was fine. I went to pick up a cake and was waited on a woman named Elizabeth who's probably in her 30's. She was so rude to me for no reason. I asked to see the cake and she put it down away from me. I asked again if I could please see it. She rudely said "if you want to see it come here" and it was beyond rude. Then she muttered to a cowOrker, every time she comes here there's a problem. First of all, there has never been a problem ever when I went in there. Ever. I don't even know who this woman is. I asked to speak to a manager. They saiid there was none and then said there was. I couldn't believe what a complete jerk he was and to think how much business I had brought them over the years along with my dad! Al doesn't care about customers and is aggressive and rude. Being one of the best local bakeries north of Boston, this place will never disappoint! Nothing big and fancy inside but it's just your traditional bakery filled with simple delicious goodies made fresh to order! They have all sorts of sweets, cookies, cupcakes, cake, pastries, pies, it's all here! The cakes here are my all time favorite though. Beautiful good sized cakes like tiramisu topped with fresh strawberries. Their frosting is nice and fluffy with just the right sweetness. Whether it be a chocolate or vanilla cake, it's never dry, just delicious. I really recommend the chocolate cake topped with strawberries they have in a separate fridge, you just can't go wrong with it! I'm not a fan of fondant and they don't have any of that here, just delicious handmade cakes that look nice and are decently priced. They also have calzones, all sorts of flavors, chicken and broccoli, chicken parm, meatball, eggplant, all yumminess! we just moved to chelsea and this bakery is basically at the top of our street (we live on the everett line). it was only a matter of time before i cracked and had to check it out. i almost wish it was terrible, then i wouldn't be so tempted to just stop in! i went on a sunday afternoon and snagged a parking spot right out front. there were a few people in front of me when i got in, which i was grateful for because it gave me a chance to look around and decide what i'd like to try. they had a number system like at the deli, however it didn't seem to be in use. no matter though, there were three young girls behind the counter making sure everyone got taken care of. i was going to get a loaf of the scali bread i'd heard about, but an older woman a couple people in front of me asked and they were already out. they did have one loaf of day old which she bought. they were also patient and didn't seem at all bothered when anyone asked a series of "do you have any..." or "what's this or that" questions which put me at ease. i decided on two calzones, an eggplant parm & italian coldcut, and then a little box of assorted goodies from the refrigerated section. the calzones are already made. i heated them up in the oven when i got them home but i'm sure you could have eaten them as-is. they were very good - the bread was excellent and the coldcuts were hearty and didn't seem like pre-sliced lunchmeat which you get at some places. the eggplant parm was good though i would have liked some stretchy cheese. even J who isn't really big into veg anything had a slice and said it was good. they're a good size and after we both had lunch i still have a good piece leftover for lunch today. i haven't tried all my sweets yet but so far they are awesome! i got a little piece of pistachio cake which i loved, especially because the frosting wasn't that sugary icing but rather a mild sweet cream. J had the chocolate mousse cake. i also picked out two cannoli, which weren't visible but i asked and i guess they keep them behind the counter, at least this day. really good. sweet but not too sweet, cold creamy filling with good texture and crispy, flaky shell. i got a slice of the ricotta pie with chocolate chips - i've never had this before so i don't have a good base for comparison but to me it is like a very rich, dense cheesecake. really good. i also got an eclair and a mini fruit tart which we haven't gotten to yet. spent $17 for everything. i could have gone nuts and also gotten an assortment of all their great looking italian cookies but i'll save that for next time! read more

Never again will I set foot into Elm St. Bakery. Worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. Last month, they sold me the wrong cake. When I called and spoke with the owner, Marie, she essentially called me a liar because there was no way one of her girls sold me a red velvet cake and said it was a rum cake. She called me back two days later after verifying my story with the girls working that day and gave a full credit for the cake. I go in there today, Marie isn't working, she didn't leave a note about my credit, and the man that was working wouldn't honor my credit or call Marie. He then proceeded to tell me he wouldn't care if I ever came back. Such a shame that a place with such great food has such awful people. The Elm Street Bakery was something I completely stumbled into this week and it rocks. I just happened to be in Everett for some car maintenance (Honda Cars of Boston is also great) and I asked the cashier to recommend a place I could grab dessert for a dinner party. She sent me to the Elm Street Bakery. I thought I was lost several times because it is tucked away in an a classic old city neighborhood. I walked in an I was overwhelmed with the choices. Everything looked great. The staff was awesome and the prices were an awesome deal. Great fun stuff for kids. There is anything you would want from the North End bakeries. Check out the little mini desserts for under $1 each. Get a dozen or maybe 13 so you can snack on one during the ride home. Highly recommended. read more

The cakes are consistently amazingly moist and delicious and a great value! My party guests always eat and rave about the cake and the mini pastries and Canolis are also always a big hit. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was because of my recent purchase of cupcakes. The cupcakes in the display case were nicely frosted and I was told that the yellow and pink ones that were in the case were the current frosting colors so those were $1.25 but other frosting colors were $.50 more. I wanted red and blue also so I was fine with that assuming they'd be nicely frosted like those on display. Well when my husband picked them up (and did not drop them on the way to the party) they were so poorly frosted that my guests thought I had made them! That wasn't what I was going for. The frosting was slathered on like a child had done them, clearly a decorating tip wasn't used, so disappointing. My guests said they tasted fine, but I won't be ordering cupcakes again. read more

DONT GO HERE I've been coming here for over 10 years but I will never step foot in here again. We bought a cake for my nana's 77th birthday here. After cutting two pieces for guests, everyone complained the cake was stale. So humiliating. The very next day I brought the cake to the owner for a refund and the ugly fat slob tried it and insisted it was fine. Sir, its fine that you like the taste of cheap staleness but NOT MY FAMILY. I recently went to this bakery for the first time to purchase a pistachio cake based off of a friends recommendation. First bad experience was when i called to reserve this cake for a Labor Day cook out i was told they had one left and that they physically checked its availability, i was called back later that day and told they actually didn't have one and that they wouldn't be making more until the following week(they still had a couple of days prior my event to make one since they gave me inaccurate information but they chose not to do so) The following week i was finally able to get the pistachio cake that I so desired only to get it home cut into it and it was a completely different shade of green than what my friend normally purchases, mine was very light pastel green and had zero pistachio flavor whatsoever...it was like eating a Vanilla cake where as my friends was a considerably darker green and was almost neon. After calling to speak to a manager on three separate days i was finally able to speak to a manager today, i told her i had pictures of the cake and asked if i could send them to her and i was provided with a cell phone number to send pics to. After they receiving pics i was called back and told i did get the right cake but that the colors do vary and she proceeded to tell me that she spoke to one of her employees and that employee told her that she remembers the exact transaction and that "the woman that came to pick up the cake was very thrilled with it and had nothing but good things to say about it" (little did she know no woman ever came to pick up that cake, it was myself that picked up the cake, I was alone and I am a man and at 6' 240lbs covered in tattoos a pretty distinct looking man so they clearly didn't even know who or what they were talking about) Regardless of anything i was very displeased with the cake and the right thing to do would have been to offer me another cake try to change my mind and my experience. However I was told that if I didn't have the remains of the cake that they couldn't offer me another one, not sure why they would expect me to keep a cake for seven days after the fact when I didn't like it and being so disappointed with the whole thing i just trashed it. I guess its not worth the $16-17 to them to attempt to please a potential repeat customer, the money wont make or break me it's certainly not about trying to get something for nothing. Second of all, I've been going to this bakery for many years, only for birthday cakes, and now I will never return. I called on a Monday to order a cake for Saturday. I needed an Italian Rum Cake. I said I wanted the smallest size. The girl on the phone said it would be a ten inch cake that feeds ten to fourteen people. I ordered it and we hung up. On Thursday, someone else from the bakery calls me, asking if I want nuts on the cake. I said no. Why didn't the first girl ask me this? Doesn't this tell you she was inexperienced? When I picked up the cake on Saturday, brought it home, and then opened it, I realized it was huge! I called immediately and asked why it was so big. (It could feed more like twenty people, not fourteen!) the woman on the phone said I ordered a ten inch and that they have an eight inch I should've ordered. Um hello... The girl said a ten inch was the smallest size they had! No wonder it was thirty dollars! I asked to speak to a manager and was told she was off for the weekend. I called Monday. I was told she's off Monday's and Wednesday's. I called Tuesday. I was told she would be in Wednesday. These people gave me the run around because they're so cheap and don't want to admit they're wrong, or refund innocent customers! I called Wednesday morning, first thing, and finally spoke to the manager. I explained myself clearly. She said "I need the cake back, in order to help you." Ummm... That's why I called on Saturday, when I first received it... And no one wanted the cake back, or even wanted to bother with me then! Obviously, five days later, I don't still have the dumb cake! My family has ordered cakes from Elm Street Bakery for over 30 years, and have never had a issue with their baked goods, but we had recently purchased an Italian Rum Cake on December 21st for a Birthday. The whole cake tasted terrible, with an unsettling after taste. The flowers on the cake which are usually sweet, had no sugar. The woman I spoke with was rude, and uncooperative, and insisted that it tasted great! The owner was equally rude to my family members!! They WOULD NOT issue me a refund, despite the fact that it tasted terrible. I will NOT be purchasing anything from this bakery again.
