(The restaurant tables are very close together, so be aware that if anyone in your party is wheelchair bound, it may be difficult for them to maneuver around.) The restaurant is kept very warm inside, and I'm usually someone who feels cold easily, but even I was rather hot. A woman brought water glasses and a water carafe to our table and said, "If you want something besides water, just let me know," and then walked off. So, in my mind, that woman was a food assistant or a food runner. Turned out, she was our waitress! She later stopped by, didn't introduce herself and didn't ask if we'd ever been there before, but did ask if we wanted an appetizer. We ordered Potato Pancakes. She also asked if we wanted bread service, so we said yes. We did notice from other conversations at the very close tables near ours, that many of the customers are regulars and have their favorite waitstaff. The manager had stopped by a table to regrettably inform a couple that their favorite waiter was out for 2 weeks. So, that did give us hope that if they have regulars, it must be good. The Potato Pancakes were delicious! (I didn't even stop to snap a picture because we were very hungry!) My husband ordered the "Bier" + Cheese Burger ($16.95), and I ordered the Pork Shank "Schwweinehaxe" ($34). The waitress said she had to check the availability of the Pork Shank, so I told her that if it wasn't available, to put in Chicken Wienerschnitzel. Then she didn't come back to let us know what the kitchen said. My husband flagged her down to find out if the pork shank was available, and she said she'd forgotten to come back, but that it was. He also told her that it was my birthday, so she brought out a cute birthday tea light for the table. The food was absolutely delicious, and for the price point, you can easily see why people are regulars there! The pork shank was enormous! (We ate off of it 2 more times after we took it home. The restaurant gave us extra gravy at no charge, too.) The rosemary mashed potatoes were very good! The presentation was lovely! My husband really enjoyed his burger. Then for dessert, our waitress brought out a slice of tiramisu with a wedge of chocolate cake over it, berries, whipped cream, and a little birthday candle in it. Turned out really wonderful! I have been there twice and tried the following dishes: 1. Carrilleras. Braised beef cheek with seasonally changing vegetables. My "version" was served with parsnip puree. The cheek was very tender and meaty, the sauce was thick and flavorful, and the puree was rich and creamy. One of the best tapas I have ever tried. 2. Crudo. The version I had was erved with thinly sliced pickled butternut squash, herbs and orange infused oil. The flavor was savory, and slightly sweet and sour. The seared tuna was tender. Creative and tasty. 3. Smoked carrots. The version I had was served with orange yogurt and topped with pepper relish. It had both red and purple carrots, which provided different flavors. I also liked the idea of pairing creamy yogurt with the sweet & crunchy carrots. 4. Grilled oysters. Served with diced piquillo & onions over grilled Pan Cristal pieces. Savory and slightly sweet & sour. 5. Cordero. Grilled lamb chops served with harrissa, eggplant escabeche and smoked tomato puree. They grilled the chops, sliced the meat from the bone, then grilled the bone again, so that the sliced meat was quite tender, while the meat on the bone was quite crispy. The smoked tomato puree was smoky and paired well with the chops. The eggplant added some freshness to the dish. Plus, I really like the plating of this dish. 6. Grilled Branzino. This dish was priced by weight. About 1lb so shareable for two. The fish was butterflied and grilled until the skin (and even bones) were quite crispy. The sauce was refreshing and delicious as well. 7. Arroz Cremoso. Similar to risotto. At first it was too salty for me; my server asked the kitchen to remake it and the second one was good. The version I had contained three kinds of mushrooms, plus some broccolini, which made every bite surprising and exciting. Overall highly recommended. I will definitely return to try more dishes!
