The watermelon iced tea is worth a try... sweet but good! They have a variety menu and a great assortment of desserts including handmade shake and malts that you can add rum to... the children's menu includes a delicious Mac & cheese and the kiddos get to decorate a sugar cookie for dessert. We were VERY impressed - great food, friendly staff, and quite clean. I had an excellent French dip sandwich and I am not kidding, it might have been the best one I have ever eaten! It was perfect. I am already excited to try out several other items on the menu! This great family-operated restaurant isn't located where you would expect - sort of on the edge of town - but don't let location or appearances fool you. This place is doing so many things right. This place needs to be on your list to try. They have a wide variety of goodies on the menu (including fried Oreos!) but my favorite was the wild boar brat; among the other amazing sausage selections. The caramelized onions paired so well with their poppy seed buns! And the boar was so perfectly indulgent to top it off. We will have to go back to try some of the other amazing items we saw served to tables around us. Stopped in here while working in the area. The people that work here are really friendly and the service is A+. The restaurant is nice and clean and well kept. I ordered a bacon blue cheese burger with fries and a side salad with an arnie palmer. The reason for the low rating is that the food came out instantly and was barely warm like allot of the food was prepped in advance, most people don't mind waiting a few minutes for hot made to order food. If you are going run a diner like restaurant there is no reason that the food can not be made fresh to order. If I am going to pay $20 for lunch with tip, I expect the food to be made to order and hot and fresh, this should be no issue for any short order cook. I would say they need to ease off the already made sysco products. No reason why you can't grind your own burger and grill it to order, make your own fries potatoes are cheaper anyway than a bag of frozen or make some fresh lemonade instead of serving fountain lemonade. It's the simple things that make a diner stand out from the hundreds out there. read more

Where to begin. As soon as we entered the establishment we were greeted right away by warm and friendly staff. The owner came to our table and gave us samples of his grandmother's cabbage soup and his own award winning green chili stew, which for us New Mexicans is a strong title to hold. The food was good and hot. I have been here a few times with friends (no more than 3 ppl) & with my boyfriend and the food is good, the chef brought out my burger which made it feel special. The fries are delicious and so is the gravy. I would definitely recommend the macaroni and bacon grilled cheese sandwich. The problem is two of i have gone this particular waitress, a younger girl with dark brown hair has basically kicked us out! I hadn't even taken a bite of my sandwich yet before she came romping over with the check and slammed it down before even asking if we wanted anything else? which was very rude to say the least. I wanted dessert and she didn't even wait. We were checked on once and it was by the owner which is always very attentive and friendly. The waitress said "sorry no rush but here is your bill we're starting to fill up a bit" about 5 minutes after getting our food. I don't mean to sound rude or trying to act like an expert but I have waitressed for many years and you NEVER do that no matter how busy you do not kick your customers out! Yes the space isn't that big but it was two of us and we had just arrived. He never called back. We've eaten here - usually get take-out - about once a week for the last several months. Food is usually consistent and reasonable. The staff is has mostly been prompt at getting our orders to us. That all changed tonight. I was on my way home and stopped to get dinner for myself and my husband. I pulled into the parking lot and called from there - indicating which car was mine and that I was waiting. After half an hour I wondered what was going on and went in. I asked about my order, and some extremely rude young man pointed to food that had been sitting there and told me that was my order. I asked how long it had been sitting there and he said "quite a while" and walked off. I called him back to ask why it hadn't been brought out to me and he said - "You weren't parked in the right place" and walked off again. A woman who said she was the Manager offered to re-cook the order. I sat in my car for another 15 minutes and finally got my food. When I took it home I found it had obviously been microwaved and not re-cooked because the eggs were tough as rubber and the meat was dried out and inedible. I called after I got home - somebody else - A guy now - identified himself as the Manager and said he had seen the order be thrown away and re-cooked (obviously a lie). He took my name and number saying he would investigate and call back. He never called. They think because they are the only place around they can treat people like crap and still stay busy. Arrived at Elf Grill after 7:30pm on Wednesday, January 10, 2018. Ordered the meatloaf dinner, mash potatoes and vegetable with a side salad. What was suppose to be meatloaf was not hamburger or prepared like meatloaf, it looked like mushhh brown something, piled on top of itself with brown gravy. I took it home and fed to my dog. If the establishment was out of meatloaf, I could have picked another meal off the menu. So sad, other meals we have had there, were good. Pretty decent local place, family owned. ELF specializes in comfort food and Colorado favorites. If you want a cheap eat that fills you up, this is were you go. I highly recommend the burrito smothered in green chili or some of their more interesting brats like the bison or rattlesnake. And the sandwiches are pretty good too. My family of 4 ate here a few months ago and we've been talking about this hidden gem ever since. It was full of locals and regulars but we got right in. This place really is a hidden gem. We live in Lakewood and it was well worth the drive. Each one of our 4 dishes were amazing and we could taste the clean fresh ingredients and the love that was put into it. We are from out-of-town and used Yelp reviews to make our decision of where to go. We slid in around 7:00 on Sunday with our kids (6 and 7) after a long drive back from the dunes. We started with the fried pickles appetizer, which were amazingly divine. Seriously. The best pickle I've had. Too bad I only got 1 out of the 5 that were served. Why skimp on such a good appetizer? I expected more pickles for the price of the appetizer. That would have at least made up for the entrees. Eating with kids is always dicey. Unfortunately we wore T-shirts/tank tops. The restaurant was cold. The female servers were wearing light jackets--even though they were moving around while they worked. The girls and I froze. Husband likes cold places, but even he was cool. We wished that we had worn jackets. I shivered and dealt with it, but the girls complained the entire time. When the servers are wearing jackets, the restaurant is too cold for seated patrons. Husband ordered the Cabbage burgers. He thought it would have been much better with cabbage and corned beef instead of ground beef. He ate it half of it, but he wasn't happy with it. The entire dish was soft. Like eating mush. I took a bite and thought it was disgusting. You would expect some sort of crunch with the cabbage, but nope. The whole thing was mushy and bland. I ordered the sausage appetizer sampler as a main dish, and immediately wished I hadn't. Had I ordered the sausage entree it would have come with one sausage and some sides like roasted peppers or maybe even sauerkraut, but the platter is just a big plate of 3 chopped up sausages with some spicy mustard. That was my bad, so I can't fault them for /me/ ordering a giant meat appetizer and getting exactly what I ordered: a pile of meat. I do wish they had recommended getting something else to eat /with/ the meat as a meal. Because the meat just by itself was unpalatable. It wasn't really *seasoned* enough to be served by itself. It really /needs/ to be eaten /with/ something. Even as an appetizer, it could be improved with a side of peppers or sauerkraut. One thing that I loved were the french fries. They are super crispy and just the right amount of bite. Seriously, the best french fries I've tasted in a long time. Unfortunately, I ordered /my/ french fries with red chili. The chili meat tasted bad. Like dog food. Maybe overcooked from sitting in the pot all day? It was even the special soup of the day... And I ordered my delicious french fries covered with yucky chili. I was trying to be polite so I quietly choked enough of it down to not be rude, but it made me so sad, because I love chili fries. The kids said that they enjoyed /their/ food. 6 year old "liked" the hot dog, but only ate a tiny bite, she mostly ate the fries. She's 6, so that's not entirely unexpected. Older daughter /loved/ the cheese quesadillas, because they were plain and not spicy. Which was fine for her. Finally, we get to dessert. Kid meals come with a "cookie that the kids could decorate." Which was a sugar cookie on a foam plate with a popsicle stick and some icing that they could smear on it with the stick. Unfortunately, the plates were pre-made, and they had squirted cookie icing on to the plate, which is a classic mistake. Sugar cookie icing is designed to harden almost immediately, thus making it *impossible* for kids to "smear." I asked how /other/ kids usually decorated the cookie. I was told that most just ate the cookie and scratched off the icing and ate it. To their credit, the kids "decorated" it by scratching off chunks of hard icing and rubbing it on the cookie. (It didn't stick.) Then ate a bite or two before leaving it on the plate (The cookie needs icing to be sweet enough to eat). Seriously though, why not squirt a little bit of cake icing on the plate for little kids so they can enjoy the experience? The bill was over $50. Which was more expensive than I was expecting for what is traditionally around $35 for typical diner food. ----- Final Overview: Food: Mixed Bag. Tasty/Delicious/Amazing Fried Pickles and french fries. /okay/ sausages that could have used complementary sides. Disgusting chili and disgusting mushy cabbage burgers. Experience: Staff were *really* friendly and personable. The bathrooms were clean. The restaurant frigid. The "decorate your own cookie" was a fail. Price: Too expensive for what it is. Final thoughts: This place does not live up to the 4.3 reviews or the hype. I would suggest fixing the cabbage burgers and chili to taste good, changing the sausage appetizer to include complements, and changing the cookie icing to cake icing for pre-made cookie treats. (Or serve the cookie icing in a squirt bag.) read more
