This is my go to thai place in the west end! The family who owns it is very nice and the service is always attentive and speedy! Elephant Thai is the last option you want for Thai food in the area. I went years ago to the VCU location before it went downhill and closed. I tried the West Broad location a few years ago and it was below average so I didn't go back. I recently kept seeing pictures of the lunch buffet in short pump and tried it out... below average. Food was cold and had minimal flavor. I honestly don't know how they keep the doors open. It's really not hard to do better... every other Thai place in town does better. read more

Ordered the red curry - while the flavor was good, the sauce was a thinner consistency than usual (almost like a soup instead of a curry consistency). I ordered beef for the protein and the meat seemed pretty low quality. I don't think it was seasoned at all and it was a little chewy. My friend ordered crab rangoons and they were cold on the inside (I had never had it before but she said it should be warm on the inside). Got take out once a year ago and was not impressed. Thought I'd give it another chance last week and again, was disappointed. My beijing-born husband was craving his favorite comfort food, American orange chicken! Yes, even real chinese people crave American Chinese food sometimes. Being as this is a Thai restaurant and not Chinese, I wasn't expecting it to be anything above average, but even so, it was disgusting! Soggy and bready on the outside and dry as the Sahara on the inside. The sauce had a very strange slimy consistency. Hands down the worst we've ever had - it was worse than an orange chicken lean cuisine. The larb gai is pretty good - though I've yet to have "bad" larb gai before. I also got pad Thai with shrimp, which was pretty decent and standard. We ordered a chili basil entree with tofu and veg which was also decent but we wish there was more tofu in it. Overall, everything was verrrry sweet. Restaurant rice usually isn't good but this one was exceptional in its sogginess. There were areas of the rice that were totally homogeneous and there was no sign of individual rice grains anymore. I don't know how anyone can expect people to eat rice like this lol; we tossed it and used our own. read more

The food was great, it was served up very quickly, it was very reasonably priced, and the staff was super nice. I get the impression they do more business as takeout as there weren't many people there, and granted it's not a "fancy" place, but I enjoyed kicking back and treating myself there. I usually get pad thai and drunken noodle, both of which are always good. I also got drunken fried rice this time but found it a little too spicy even for my Korean self. My first couple of visits to Elephant Thai the year they first opened were not so good. I actually vowed to not return after the second visit because I did not like their food, which lacked flavor. This was disappointing because I liked their downtown location. However, due to the proximity of this place from my house and they're open later than other Thai restaurants for delivery, I reluctantly gave them another chance. I'm so glad I did! Elephant Thai is now my go to take out/delivery. The food always come piping hot. We usually order their pad see ew, pad prik pow and tom yum Elephant Thai. All delicious with good flavors. Perhaps the chef from the downtown location moved to this location after the downtown location closed? Anyways, so glad their food has improved. Their Thai iced tea is pretty good as well. Giving them 4 stars instead of 5 because their food tends to be inconsistent. This was my first time trying Elephant Thai and I think this will be my go-to Thai delivery from now on. As a Korean person I appreciate fish sauce and this place doesn't go light. Or on coconut and lime juice. We ordered a couple of things, Chicken Larb, Jasmine Rice, Tom Kha soup and Fresh shrimp rolls. And a Shirley Temple. I thought it was cool when the food arrived from GrubHub that the straw was sealed and taped with a tamper proof seal. The utensils are really good and sturdy. I was surprised because generally when you get take out utensils, they're so flimsy and you can't get anything on the fork or spoon! So yay for that. The chicken larb was tasty and had a good level of heat without being overwhelming or painful. Thai hot can be very very hot. This was jusssst right. The only thing I didn't like was that there was shredded iceberg lettuce under the larb and so when it soaks in the lime juice, it breaks down fast and becomes soggy. Soggy, soggy iceberg lettuce is awful. I wish they used cabbage. It's more traditional and it holds up to the acids in the larb. Still tho. So tasty. The Tom Kha soup has button mushrooms, not straw mushrooms. A little cilantro. There are no other vegetables or anything, it's pretty simple. I ordered it with tofu tho you can order it with whatever protein you like. The Fresh rolls were very good, I just didn't like that both ends of the roll are open, so when you're eating them, a lot of filling gets squished out of the end of one side instead of being safely tucked in like a burrito. The filling is shrimp, iceberg lettuce, carrots, cilantro. There was no rice noodles, just iceberg lettuce as filling. I appreciate this because some places use the rice noodles and they're so filling you can't eat anything else. The peanut sauce was thin and there weren't any crushed peanuts in it. Been here a few times. In reading other reviews, I don't believe that it deserves the rep others have given. Overall, I've have positive experiences here & the service is very attentive and kind. Plenty of veggie options, but I don't think the Thai Coffee was as good as it could have been. Terrible music choices in the background, but I don't think that's a selling point. This is where I get my Thai from. With the pandemic I haven't been in awhile and was really on the fence of the 4 star review. The pad Thai, Thai fried rice, and Thai coffee remain delicious. Service was great. Okay the bad news. Our app was cooked on the outside and frozen in the inside. Some will find this more of my issue then the restaurants issue but they now serve everything on plastic plates. I wondered if this was due to the pandemic or something else. Elephant Thai Ratings: 3.9/5 Food: 4.25/5 - Decided to get takeout for dinner with my sister. I got the green curry with chicken and shrimp. The proteins were cooked well and tender. Especially enjoyed the shrimps, they were pretty big in size. The veggies such as the bell peppers, bamboo shoots, and eggplants were all fresh. Love the green curry sauce, super creamy and tasted perfectly after I dump all my rice into it. It was tasty and super flavorful, definitely my top comfort food from a Thai place. The only downside was the rice. It was kind of moist, a little too wet for me, so was not a good texture. The pad woon sen with chicken and shrimp was good too. Protein quality was consistent. The clear noodles were cooked perfectly. The veggies such as corn, carrots, and onions added some good crunch to this dish. It was yummy and deliciously good. The only thing is the tomatoes in there was too big and sour, probably better if they switch it to like Napa cabbage or something. Overall, a solid Thai food place. Ambiance: 3.5/5 - Located in the Regal cinema shopping center, right next to this other Thai placed called Yaya's cookbook (I'd recommend too). They have a pretty extended COVID setup still with tables spread away from each other. There is a good system in place for picking up DoorDash orders. When I went to go pick up my order, I saw the interior was quite clean and brightly lit with tables, chairs, and booths available. There are no outdoor seating though, but usually no wait at this place. Price: 5/5 - Portions are generous for dining in and a great spot for Thai takeout. The chicken and shrimp green curry was $13.95 and the chicken and shrimp pad woon sen was $13.50. Most importantly is they give you six shrimps, that's amazing. The total came up to be around $30 after tax. A steal for Thai food in Henrico. There's was also $5 off Doordash if you're ordering from there for the first time, so actually really good value, and total end up to be $25. Service: 4/5 - The service was good, but nothing too special about it. The staffs are nice and were pretty good about social distancing and COVID precautions. For dining-in, they still serve food in takeout containers for easy disposal and sanitation purposes. The food was packed well for takeouts, food was hot and cooked fast, so overall pretty good transaction there. BLUF: This is my go to Thai restaurant for Green Curry. Tasty green curries, decent potion sizes, and fresh ingredients. I do not know why this place only has a three star, but definitely underrated and worth over a three star rating. They also refused to take my order because I asked for the mango sticky rice sauce to not be sour like it usually is. I like the mango sticky rice, but the sauce they serve with it is sometimes inedible. I love the bright interior here. Our server was quick and really sweet. I got the crispy chicken combo (medium spicy) and though I didn't enjoy it as much as past visits when I've gotten a curry or bento box, that's not to say it wasn't great and flavorful. Both my chicken and my husband's garlic shrimp were tender and tasted fresh. THE WORST THAI FOOD! I ordered the Vegetarian green curry, Ram Chicken, and Tofu Drunken Noodles. The curry was way too spicy. I like spicy, but this was something else. My nose was running and I was sweating bullets. As for the Ram Chicken, the chicken was boiled and over-cooked and had no flavor. The drunken noodles were undercooked. The service was very rude until I mentioned how terrible the food was - then the service improved - hence the 2 star instead of 1. The decor was equally as terrible as the food. There were 3 or 4 posters of elephants on the walls - they looked like magazine clip-outs. The place was very run-down. Too bad Tara Thai closed. My family frequently comes to this restaurant because we enjoy their food. However, our experience last week was terrible. The waitress didn't care to help us arrange our table and simply left our dishes teetering dangerously on the edge before leaving. We didn't see her until we finally flagged her down for a check. The food quantity has also decreased. We felt as though we were being cheated as loyal customers. The worse has to be the uncooked pieces of pork that they served in one of our dishes. They were cold! Quality of Elephant Thai has gone down. Would not recommend and will definitely be looking for other restaurants worthy of our money. read more

First time here with the family, and it's just alright. I've been to a couple Thai restaurants in Richmond, so I did compare. The location is nice with good seating and very clean. Staff is friendly and accommodating. The food was just okay. We ordered Tom yum soup with shrimp which was really good in this cold weather, and two bowls was enough for four people to share. I got the Penang curry with tofu which was spicy and flavorful. I didn't come close to finishing, so I feel like it could have been shared between two people if ordered. But it was good! We also ordered Pad Thai, which was too peanut-y for my liking, Elephant Thai Lo Mein, and Garlic Shrimp. The Garlic Shrimp was good, but I definitely feel like they could have added more sauce because that made the dish. The Lo Mein was pretty standard. We also ordered a strawberry frappe and Thai iced tea. I hated both, and exchanged my Thai tea for Thai iced coffee which was only marginally better. Maybe it was an off day for whoever made the drinks, but we kept the frappe and the coffee to not impose. The prices are pretty standard, and again the service was good. Just not a place that I would pick as my choice for Thai food in Richmond. read more

A friend who recently moved up to Northern VA had an expiring Groupon for Elephant Thai, so he had me use it for him. It was a $20 Groupon, and I was dining alone, so I ordered a soup, salad, and entree to pass the $20 mark. The papaya salad was not as spicy as I expected it to be (and usually is), but it was still tasty. The soup was also decent. Veggie pad thai for my entree was also a good-sized portion and not bad. Service was great, and I was seated at a four-person table even though I was a solo diner, so I had a lot of space. The restaurant itself was very pretty with very modern decor. It was also spacious, open, and very clean. This is Short Pump after all though. Overall, not wow-ed by the food, but it was still very good. Personally, I would probably go to the VCU location downtown instead of driving all the way to Short Pump in the future. read more

Wow I had no idea what to expect after reading the rollercoaster of reviews for this place. To further add to the pendulum, we had a good experience! Groupon has a pay $10 get $20 for two people, which we used. We went around 4:00P on a Thursday and were the only people in there. There were a fair share of calls and takeout during that time. The food was solid! Prices were reasonable, as was the quantity. Coconut boba drink my wife loved! It was fresh, bright, and creamy (tasted like there was some coconut cream). Their beer selection is all bottles and is good for a Thai place. Happy hour 5-8, with multiple $3 options. Crab Rangoon were above average and actually had filling to them. Green curry was good and spicy. Was worried it was going to be watery by the appearance, but did not taste so. My wife and I appreciated the option to get noodles instead of rice. Nice hints of lemongrass. Not loaded with veggies, but were good veggies, especially eggplant. Elephant Pad Thai: A good margin above average. I was potentially biased by how hangry I was. The wontons added a unique hit. Surprising amount of flavorful shrimp! My only quarrels were some of the dried shrimp were rather fishy, detracting from dish. Asked for spicy; not spicy at all. Service: We were immediately greeted and seated. Our server was nice, seemed to care, and was attentive. We struggled a touch to communicate at times. Only a few doors down from the movie theater in Short Pump, we were happy they were still serving sushi at 9pm on a Monday. As we were seated I bought a Groupon which covered our sushi and left us with enough to buy Thai fried rice too. So glad it did!! I've got here a few times. I like to get my nails done at Luxe few doors down and get food with my nail buddy afterwards. This place has good Thai food. One comment, and this is definitely a personal preference thing; I feel like their curries comes with a LOT of sauce and I don't always love that.
