Wish I could leave zero stars. The food is good but this restaurant cannot handle any sort of traffic. Placed an order last week via door dash and over an hour after the DELIVERY time it was cancelled. Placed a redemption order tonight for pickup, called the restaurant to confirm they could take the order, which they did. Order was placed at 5:15p and was supposed to be ready at 6:00p. Currently standing in the restaurant at 6:35p and the order is not ready. Incredibly frustrating. They should not accept takeout orders period. Unfortunately, I will never patron this business again. Update: finally got my order at 6:40 and it was missing an item. I chose not to go back because it wouldn't be worth waiting for a refund or remake. read more

Ruang Tong is situated in an older strip style building. Ambiance is an interesting mix of more formal, lighted Asian art works mixed with American antiques spread about along with some western flare. It's a medium sized restaurant with plenty of seating for larger parties. The restaurant was fairly dirty from dining room to restrooms. Our service experience was poor. Despite being one of two groups the majority of the time we were at the restaurant, we were given the bare minimum attention. When we were waited on, the interaction was quick and unfriendly from being seated, to being told to find a restroom in the dark (had to use a phone light to get to it), to paying our bill. While the restaurant came highly recommended, we did not find the food to be as good as we hoped. We had fresh spring rolls with shrimp for an appetizer. While good, they were missing Thai basil in them which made them a bit bland. For my entree, I had the green curry and the presentation was beautiful. However, food was very salty, as curries can sometimes be, and rather oily for my liking. The combination of the ambiance, service and food factors resulted in two stars. Told me food would be ready in 14 mins when I knew she was lying because they sound frantic in the background & she just told another person 14mins. I said Im in no rush tell me the time. She said 30mins. I said ok cool. She repeated my order to me & then told me 40mins. I asked the price. She said her card machine is down. I said will you have it working by time I get there because I done have cash. She said yea. I ask the price again & she says $40. I arrive 60mins later & she still ask me to wait 10mins. Frustrated I said give me 2 spring rolls ni charge for playing with my time. She agreed. I came back & instead of drunken noodle that she read back to me she give me garlic noodle. She said she's sorry & she'll start the drunken noodle now. Im pissed! The food is ready now & she says its $46.25. I told her I'm paying $40. She said yeah if you pay with cash. I reminded her that I said all I had was card & you told me $40. She said that was tax for using credit card. I said this is a debit card. She said doesn't matter. So she lied multiple times, I get home & my kids didnt eat the food because they went to bed so they already ate & Im starving because I gotta wait for my wife to sneak out the bed after putting them down. I am a DC resident but was in Richmond for a month recently and discovered this Thai restaurant Ruang Tong. After finding this place I ate there frequently. I have had the Spring rolls, green salad, drunken noodles, panang curry, talay thai, and wild boar basil stir-fry. I obviously like spicy food as many of these dishes are one or two peppers though they can modify that if you wish. Some of those dishes came with either rice or noodles and both were very high-quality. All these dishes were extraordinary for both the quality of the ingredients and the cooking and moreso for the presentation, the plating. All very much recommended. The Spring rolls may be the best and, definitely, prettiest I have ever had. Everything was fresh and authentic. Since I ate-in every time I noticed they do a fair carry-out business. I am sure many of these are repeat customers but, imo, they are missing out on the presentation of the plate. It is equal to the food and definitely worth the dining-in experience. I lived in Atlanta for some years, ate Thai food frequently, and made friends with several of the best Thai cooks and owners there; in DC I eat at excellent Thai and Lao restaurants. I think this restaurant here in Richmond is on par with the very best in both of those cities. I make a pretty good panang myself and their version puts mine to shame. I see in a few of their past reviews some service, language issues and payment processing issues; these can vary over time. My experience was great. They waited for me to finish the appetizer before bringing the main dish so I was not rushed to finish one lest the other cools too much. I appreciated that very much as it made my overall dining more enjoyable. I Will be back in Richmond again soon and am very much looking forward to exploring the menu and enjoying this great restaurant again for more of their excellent food. read more

Bad communication services i kept trying to say my order and then the worker was being rude and saying the wrong order then hung up in my face not saying how much it was i have to call back n i asked he said it and ended the call so fast and it gets worse i get there to pay he didn't even put my order in the system i had to order it again and wait 30 minutes when the person said 5 mins. the food was good though but BAD service. read more

We've been on the hunt for great Thai south of the river, and sadly, this is not it. The Google reviews were really good, so we were hopeful! I ordered Panang curry with tofu, which is advertised as coming with bamboo shoots, bell paper, basil, and eggplant. However, mine came with tofu and green beans, and nothing else, which was pretty disappointing. It said it was a homemade sauce, which I could get tastes of which was great, but I think they use MSG or way too much salt or something that made it nearly inedible. My husband ordered pad thai, which he said was just okay. He also got curry puffs, which were very gross and slimey and weird. read more

I rolled into Ruang Tong this past Sunday (2/11) and we were a big party of 12. Thankfully we were the only party in the entire place. Somehow they managed to take over 40 minutes to bring out the food. They had The Hunt for Red October playing on the TV above the bar so that was cool. Our server was a cool enough guy but seemed a little out of his element. I wonder how he would do when there are more than 1 table and more than 12 people. The food was pretty typical Thai food. Nothing at all to write home about. The Pad Thai was very sub-par and I knew this going in. I played it safe and just ordered my standard fried rice dish. As you can see from my picture, my fried rice dish was pretty standard. I enjoyed the flavors and was probably the only one satisfied with their meal. See playing it safe is also playing it smart. Order something that's really hard to mess up and you'll be ok. It's hard to mess up a fried rice dish and thankfully they didn't mess mine up. It's... ok. It's never bad, but it's never exciting either, and while convenient, I've had better Thai. I'm not sure if it needs more spice or more fish sauce or what exactly is missing, but the flavours just always seem a little flat next to the brightness I expect from Thai food and it's disappointing. I've been a few times, each with a long enough break in between that I forget, but third time's the charm, I think. If you want a way to ease a nervous relative into ethnic food, it's probably a fine bet, nothing too crazy that will upset a tame palate, but that's not for me. read more

Had an unpleasant pick up experience that is worth sharing so others can beware. I ordered pick up through their website and later received a call that they were out of one of the items I had ordered. I was already at the restaurant so I came inside and tried to swap the item for one of similar value. This presented an issue for the host as he wouldn't let me swap it for something more expensive, but he also wouldn't let me swap it for something less expensive when I asked for a reimbursement of the difference. He said the only thing to do was call door dash and ask for a refund. The restaurant could not process my refund. I was confused because I ordered through their website and saw no mention of DoorDash in the process. He was adamant so I called DoorDash , spent 10 minutes on the phone with them outside the restaurant, but the DoorDash rep could not locate my order. I went back inside to let the host know this. Finally, he brings me around to the tablet and shows me the order, where I see a cancel option. I ask him to cancel the order, which he does and then waves me away like I am a nuisance. All this back and forth and that's all that needed to happen for me to get my refund for an order that they couldn't make, because their website wasn't up to date with 86'd items. This is at best, it pains me to leave this review, a three star experience. We were new to the area and delighted to find Ruang Tong Thai food. They advertised delivery but it seems every time we requested it, they couldn't accommodate. Started picking up our orders and with a place this small and an obscure location, you'd think they'd recall our orders, being once a week or more. No. We were a five minute drive at most and when asked about delivery, we were told it was too close and not worth the service to them (what?). The food was different every time we ordered. Fast forward five years...we ordered again. Food was bad. By bad I mean the chicken had grisle. Food was cold. No hello at the door. Everyone has something going on but as of Christmas 2019, we gave up. Keep looking or, if the stars align with this restaurant you could hit the lotto! read more

Wow! I ordered online (got a confirmation email and everything) but when I got to the restaurant, they did not have a record of my order. So beware of ordering online, HOWEVER, they jumped into action and prepared my chicken pad Thai within 10ish minutes. Hands down, best pad Thai I've ever had. The chicken was fresh, juicy, and cooked to perfection. No flat, dry pieces of chicken here. The sauce was delicious and creamy, and it was topped with crunchy fried onions which I've never seen before. Will definitely be back! read more

So I have been to this place twice and both times have been terrible and with the same staff member. My first interaction with this restaurant was about two weeks ago. I placed my order at 5 PM on a Friday afternoon and was told about a 40 minute wait time. I arrive there at 5:40 PM and was then told that it would be a 20 minute additional wait as they "just confirmed my order." When I show them the confirmation that I received at 5pm they blew me off and then said actually it would be 30 minutes. I told them if they have not made my food yet then I would just like to cancel it and they said fine. Fast forward to today I once again I'm craving Thai food and I place an order here to give them a try. I order about an hour before I was planning to pick it up. On the website I place my order and my total including tax is 39. When I arrive at the restaurant my bill is five dollars higher. This seems strange to me but I was in a rush and couldn't find my receipt immediately on my phone. When I finally get a chance to look at my receipt I realized the discrepancy so I contact the restaurant inquiring about this. The server tells me that the price on the website is different as they use "more expensive ingredients now." Mind you everything I ordered was just chicken, I didn't upgrade to anything, no special request, so I wasn't sure what he was talking about. I once again reiterated well the price on the website is wrong. So I asked him to give me an itemize list and he reports that it is "just five dollars." But what was more upsetting was the principle of it. I left it alone but I do want to warn you to just double check your receipt that you were quoted as well as what they have you pay in the restaurant. Because no matter how you looked at it even with taxes there is no reason why there should be such a large discrepancy. Which makes me wonder if they are doing this to everyone then it seems pretty fraudulent. In regards to food it was pretty mediocre. The portion sizes were smaller than I am used to. The one good thing was the dumplings were good but that was about it. Save yourself the hassle and just go to Siam Paragon Thai in Midlothian. read more

Food is excellent. ordering online for pickup is easy, but the bill is always more when you get there - by a couple of dollars. Yesterday I opened the bag right at the front counter to make sure the order was correct before I left. The cashier came over to me and looked at my order, grabbed the jasmine rice from me and said it did not come with the order. I said it did (Choose a side : Jasmine Rice) - part of the pineapple fried rice dish - he argued that it did not and did not bother to check with anyone. They lost a good customer. I will not return. Great for large parties, food is great, and servers are really accommodating. I had the Duck Ka Pow, and it was amazing. I came with a party of 20 or more, and food came out amazingly fast. Had a lunch date with my co-worker. Upon arriving it was us and another couple being waited on. After tasting the food I must say I had better Thai food nothing to brag about here. I ordered the shrimp pad Thai medium spice and I swear the cook was super heavy with spice. My mouth was numb from how spicy the food was. When I told the waiter about my unhappiness he recommended that I come back another time and try the mild spice when he was the one who recommended to me that their mild sauce test like nothing. My boyfriend and I came in for lunch today for the first time. We were first really surprised because the inside was actually really nicely decorated compared to the outside. Staff was extremely friendly throughout the whole meal and it was just a really nice environment. We started off with the ginger salad because it comes with lunch. The ginger dressing was really good, very strong on the ginger, very refreshing taste compare to most restaurants which taste more like sugary sweet than ginger. We ordered the spring roll and calamari for appetizer. I personally is a huge fan of calamari, ever place that has it, I will try it. I liked it a lot, most places now uses the thin calamari compared to the big ones that curl that ruang tong uses. Tara Thai at short pump used to have it but changed. My boyfriend had the Beef Basil, presentation was nice and the flavor was really good. He said it was perfect to his taste because a lot of other Thai places tend to make it overly spicy. I had the Shrimp Pad Thai, I am used to the fatter noodles but ruang tong uses the skinny noodles and have some fat pieces in it. Flavor was good though, I really liked it. I'm the type to go to different Thai restaurants and try the same exact dish to compare. This is definitely a new top favorite on my list. Then we ended the meal with mango rice cake, it is standard with half a mango and rice cake but I always wish there was more mango. (I just love mango haha) Great way to end the meal, so good! Surely quite the unassuming restaurant from the exterior, but this place was a great find! My friends and I were on our way home when we caught a glimpse of the restaurant in a shopping center on Forest Hill and spontaneously decided to give it a try. Our server (and owner as well, I think) welcomed us in with a friendly smile and was very accommodating! He really showed his appreciation for us coming in. Collectively, we tried the Thai tea, the drunken noodles, the tofu pad thai, the tom yum soup, and a spicy chicken stir-fry dish I forget the name of at the moment. I personally didn't like the Thai tea but my roommate enjoyed it, and the tom yum soup was a little off-setting to me but everything else was very flavorful and spicy! I appreciated that they did not dilute the spice when I requested the "Thai Hot" level of spiciness - some places think that customers don't know what they can handle and don't truly add the spice requested! If you're in the Forest Hill area and are craving some Thai, this place will do the job! read more

Randomly tried this Thai restaurant on the way home from visiting the Hugenot flatwater area and was pleasantly surprised. The spice was good and had me needing water. Friend ordered Thai Spice and it was spicy but she could handle it well (so it's probably not terribly spicy). Have tried fried tofu appetizer, Panang curry, drunken noodles. All tasty and the curry had a lot of flavor (if a tiny bit too salty). The restaurant is clean, brightish, and has ok decor. I think the 2nd best Thai restaurant I've tried behind Chadar Thai. read more
