I was excited to try this place as I have heard several good things and have been on the hunt for my go-to Thai place since moving to Richmond a few years ago. This unfortunately is not it. The pork fried dumplings were just okay. They could have been from the freezer section of any grocery store. I ordered Tofu Pad Thai with medium spice and it was soupy, bland and sickly sweet. My friend got a stir fry and it was also very bland. She order a glass of wine and said it tasted like the bottle had been opened quite some time ago. I should have seen it coming when I ordered lime with my sparkling water and the waitress said they only had lemon. What?!? A Thai place that doesn't have fresh limes? Came with my family during lunch which specials run till 3:00, you also get a spring roll with your meal. The restaurant itself seems a little dark and could use some natural lighting but plenty of seating and very spacious. Our serves was very nice and opened the door for us upon us entering the restaurant which was very nice. We ordered a Thai ice tea but it was extremely sweet, thankfully she gave us an extra cup of tea to downplay the sweetness. We got the papaya salad, pad Thai, drunken noodles, and a chicken curry. Our food came or very fast and portions were generous. The papaya was very refreshing and had the perfect amount of fish sauce tartness and chili spice. Very refreshing and a definite must when you come here. If you don't like spicy food please review the menu. When they say Thai hot they are not messin around! Pad Thai came without peanuts or any sauce at all. Noodles were sticky and vegetables way over steamed. When I went to the store to ask about forgotten toppings and sauce, the lady was very off putting and rude, said pad Thai didn't come w sauce. When I asked to buy some, she didn't want to change my $50, which was all I had. She said the 2 oz sauce was $1.50 , then proceeded to give me a half ounce of sauce and walked away. Tip Thai restaurant has done something my mother was never successful in doing - getting me to eat raw onions and fresh peas. I will explain. I have pictured my Trifecta of Lunch - perfection! First is the Shrimp Cracker! A delightful salad placed in a fried wonton wrapper bowl, inside is a blend of little fried shrimp dipped in Thai chili sauce sitting on a bed of lettuce, thinly slice purple onion, cucumbers and slivers of carrots with I believe may be a thin Thai chili dressing. This salad is a little spicy - to me just right and everything goes so very well together I'm eating the raw onions instead of trying to pick them out! If getting delivery or pickup take time to smell the paper bag this salad comes in - people probably think I'm huffing paint but naw just shrimp cracker!! Next is the Cheese Rangoons. Delicate wontons filled with minced corn and carrots, cream cheese and fresh peas. As I mentioned earlier I don't like peas but when it come to this ragoon I careful bite so the pea breaks open with the filling - the taste is perfect just perfect! Last but not least of the trifecta is the Tom Kha Gai Soup. The salty, sour, creamy soup with chicken and chunks of mushrooms is what describes comfort. It feels like a big cuddle bear picked me up and gave me the best hug!! Ok maybe that's a bit exaggerated but it is really really good. I'd also like to give a shot out to their mango curry that I had the other night. OH MY GOODNESS - that red curry rocked the mangoes. Maybe I ordered the wrong dish on the wrong day at the wrong time. It just wasn't good. It wasn't horrible, I did eat all of it (but then again I was starving, so maybe it was horrible)! I ordered the drunken noodles with spring rolls. I know drunken noodles are soft, but these noodles were soggy. Not to my liking at all. Also the spring rolls were kinda greasy. Slightly above average Thai food. I wouldn't go out of my way for this restaurant but I'd definitely stop on for lunch or dinner if it's near by! The worst Thai place in town. And I know, because I eat Thai food like it's my job, because I don't have one. Also, I lived in Thailand. Sorry if I sound like a jerk. But this is gospel: Always order the tom yum goong soup as a litmus test. If it has tomatoes in it: no bueno. So that happened. And they added sugar to it. Which is kind of more a Bangkok thing, but oh well, Americans love sugar anyway. Also, $5.95 is standard price for the soup, but usually you get 4/5 shrimp at the other places. I got 2. And it was light on the cilantro. Out of curiosity I ordered the num tok AND the grilled steak salad (yum neua) to see if they prepared them differently. Nope! One had tomatoes?? The meat was not a nice char that comes from coating it in toasted rice powder. I ordered the Pad See Ew and it was substantial. It wasn't very spicy, but I had failed to say how spicy I wanted it so they must have given me mild. We've been meaning to try Tip Thai forever and are glad we did. It was a quick and delicious (and affordable) dinner. We had the crispy shrimp rolls with ginger and a chili dipping sauce for a starter. I had the massaman curry with beef and my partner had the mango curry with chicken. Both were good, if maybe a little under spiced. But we left full and happy and look forward to returning. I ordered shrimp, only to receive 5 small shrimp in the entire container. If I'd known, I would have offered to pay a few more dollars for a decent amount of protein. The best thing here is the plain white rice. We ordered a lot of food and none of it had any flavor. I ended up just putting some butter and salt and pepper on the rice and ate it that way. Spring salad: iceberg lettuce and a slivered tomato with some onions. Crispy wontons: flat little crispy disappointments. The spring rolls: weren't bad but they were a little soggy and the sauce was just just plain strange. Wonton soup also wasn't bad but it had a lot of soggy cabbage in it. Tom kha has way too many bamboo shoots and not a lot of flavor. Fish cakes were super rubbery and tasted weirdly like hot dogs? I may be too American for this place but I did not enjoy it. Especially for the price. Pad broccoli: was probably the best thing we ordered. However the beef seemed like it was frozen and thawed instead of fresh. I've had my share of Thai food across Richmond (Thai Diner, Chadar Thai, Thai Diner Too, Elephant Thai, Siam Paragon), the Northern Virginia Area (Ghin Na Ree, Thai Square, Bangkok 54, Natta Thai, Neisha Thai, Duangrat's) and the Silver Spring, MD area (Ruan Thai, Suporn's (RIP), and Nava Thai - one of favorites because they have hard to find Floating Market Soup) I can honestly say Tip Thai is my favorite. I am addicted to fresh herbs, spices and fresh vegetables. I find that other restaurants use MSG and other additives, or thick sauces to mask true flavors. In essence, Tip Thai is a lot more earthy and straight forward. Everyone starts out with Pad Thai, including me, but I've had it so many times, I never even tried it at Tip Thai. Some of my favorite dishes at Tip Thai include: Tom Yum Goong (where they use fresh kaffir lime leaf from the owner's garden, and the thai root plant galanga, which is usually substituted with ginger at other Thai restaurants) Tofu Soup (which is not spicy, but more peppery and has a good amount of vegetables and cilantro, which I love!) Yum Woon Sen (which is a healthy cellophane noodle salad with a spicy lime sauce with tons of vegetables, chicken, shrimp, peanuts and more cilantro!) Pad Prik King (Thai chili paste with green beans, peppers and thai basil - and it's not loaded down with oil) Pad See Ew (which they use a great black bean paste, thick noodles, and again - not too oily) These are just some of my favorites. After I went through the Pad Thai phase, I went through curries, now I can't even remember last time I had curry, but I love Red Curry with Duck and Pineapple! Tip Thai makes a great one! And yes, Thai people do use sugar, usually palm sugar, to sweeten homemade curry pastes and blend in chili spice to find that perfect balance. Go easy on the waitstaff here, or basically the 3 people that work here 7 days a week. They don't have a lot of business, but the food is consistent, and I always have a conversation with the owner. So if you enjoy heavy cream, lots of oil, MSG used to enhance flavor, you probably won't like this place. But if you're looking for more authentic Thai Food, you gotta try this place out. I use to think all the good Thai restaurants were in Northern VA and MD. Who knew, the best would be in a poorly placed strip mall off Staples Mill Rd. Excellent food! My Mom and I got takeout here the other night and we were both impressed with the quality of the food. Pretty decent prices, nice reusable takeout containers, good portions, and SPICY as requested. We ordered the fresh garden spring rolls as an appetizer, which were pretty typical, perhaps a bit beefier than usual. A small order came with three and a side of sweet chili dipping sauce. For our entrees we ordered the Pad Spicy Eggplant and Green Curry Chicken. Both were very, very good. Packed with flavor, LOTS of onions in the curry (which I'm partial to) and enough leftovers for us each to have another meal. As others have noted, not fancy at all on the inside. At around 7 on New Year's Eve there was not a single party seated in the restaurant. There was, however, a line for takeout, so I'm guessing that more opt for the latter. PSA: Calling all vegans of Richmond!!! Tip Thai is a wonderful option for vegans/GF/picky eaters/literally everyone. Great menu featuring authentic, heirloom dishes with friendly service. I am, admittedly, very persnickety when it comes to food. Thus, I consciously limit eating out, save for the few places willing to accommodate my excessive modifications. Arrived on a Friday night at six to find a totally empty restaurant. But it was clean with quiet music playing and we were greeted and seated quickly. The menu has a decent selection of curries and thai dishes, but all of them had the beef and pork options crossed out. We inquired and were assured that all meats are available. I ordered the beef prik khing, and my wife got chicken pad pak. Food arrived after 15 minutes, looking and smelling good. The pad pak was very tasty. My dish was nice and spicy as requested, but the lemon grass was much too strong and overpowered the whole dish, which was disappointing. The mango sticky rice for dessert was good, if a little overcooked. Overall not a bad find at reasonable prices, but we'll probably try some other thai spots first before returning here. P.S. They only accept Visa and MasterCard. I tried to pay with my AmEx and got shut down. P.P.S. They have one small tube TV hanging above the entryway facing into the restaurant. I've been to about 90% of all the Thai Restaurants in RVA and after this visit I think i'll have two more places to try. Saw some good reviews about this place and I live close by so I decided to check it out. It's located in a very very small shopping center with nothing that compliments the restaurant. Atmosphere/dining furniture seems a little outdated and could use some sprucing up but it wasn't a torn down kinda vibe/look. The menu is really funny b/c they refer to anyone who isn't "Thai" as Westerners and says that we probably can't handle the True Thai Heat/spicyness level. lol. I got the Beef fried rice. Fried rice was seasoned nicely but even though I ordered it with a mild level of spice I tasted NO spice/heat to the dish at all. Tomatoes and onions could have been cooked a little more as they were still kinda crunchy/hard. Beef on the other hand was a little overcooked and chewy.. Service was about average and my rice entree was 10 bucks which wasn't bad. Probably one of the better places that serves Thai Ice Tea. read more

Pretty solid Thai restaurant. I went a couple of times and have enjoyed it each time. Not too oily or too sweet like other places. Don't let the random strip mall location fool you, this place is worth checking out. I really can't say too much about it or get too excited because Richmond has so many Thai restaurants that I'm starting to get tired of Thai food just by driving past them all. Seriously though, despite my difficulty in showing any enthusiasm (due to the overwhelming amount of Thai restaurants in the area), this place is among the best thai restaurants in Richmond, if not the best and it seems to be a secret. Those who don't live in the West End and even many West End foodies who are too stuck in Short Pump to notice this place are missing out. This kills all of the nonfusion Thai places in Carytown that I've tried and it kills Tara Thai, from what i am told by Cambodian friends (Cambodian and Thai food is pretty similar, Thai is just much stronger and oiler and they have some dishes in common, like papaya salad, among many others). The fried banana dessert is Yumdeliumptious!! Just as a caveat - I'm not from Richmond and so have little basis for comparison to what else is available. Had a quick dinner on a Tuesday night, approximately 7:30. If there had been a dinner rush, it was over and I was one of three customers in the quiet restaurant. Ordered my favorite Thai dish, Gai Pad Prik Khing. The service was prompt, and the food came back very quickly. The food was delicious, and reasonably priced. The one criticism I had was that the string beans were a crisper than I prefer with that dish - it could just be a personal preference with the cook. But the chicken and spices were great and completely hit the spot. As far as the decor and ambience, it was straightforward. Nothing special to look at, but also not chintzy and cliche. I enjoyed the poster of thai ingredients on the wall, but didn't really understand the need for a small television playing the food network in the dining room. Tip Thai was an enjoyable restaurant.
