Just as a caveat - I'm not from Richmond and so have little basis for comparison to what else is available. Had a quick dinner on a Tuesday night, approximately 7:30. If there had been a dinner rush, it was over and I was one of three customers in the quiet restaurant. Ordered my favorite Thai dish, Gai Pad Prik Khing. The service was prompt, and the food came back very quickly. The food was delicious, and reasonably priced. The one criticism I had was that the string beans were a crisper than I prefer with that dish - it could just be a personal preference with the cook. But the chicken and spices were great and completely hit the spot. As far as the decor and ambience, it was straightforward. Nothing special to look at, but also not chintzy and cliche. I enjoyed the poster of thai ingredients on the wall, but didn't really understand the need for a small television playing the food network in the dining room. Tip Thai was an enjoyable restaurant. I was a little disappointed in the food from Tip Thai. The waitress/?cook, was pretty accommodating and willing to change flavors to our preferences so that was a positive. Also the prices were more reasonable than most Thai restaurants. The restaurant was very clean but nothing particularly special. Food was just ok to good (but not great). The pad thai was very good. The pad see ew, tom yum soup and a couple of salads were ok. Spice could have been hotter. I wanted to give it a shot and would go again if someone else did. Otherwise I'd go to Chaddar Thai for a safe bet on a great meal, and Thai Diner Too if i want something closer to me and greasy goodness. read more

Great place! From the first steps felt very neat and clean. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I ordered Drunken noodles with pork very tasty. Also had Sathay Chicken very tender and delicious. Living near a great Thai restaurant makes me happy! They have a broad menu and are such a friendly place. I've been here for lunch a few times and dinner a few times, and it's always good. There's never a big crowd and it's a nice environment with various pictures of Thai-related things around the restaurant. They're very willing to vary the spice levels to your liking including my favorite description for the high heat level: "So when were you last in Thailand?" I ordered it once with some noodles and was immediately wishing I'd chosen a lower heat. Still loved the adventure though. Their appetizers are tasty and the menu cover a good variety of Thai flavors. I'm eager to try everything on the menu and hopefully it won't take me long. read more

I was on a quest to find an authentic Thai restaurant here and this is by far, is the most authentic Thai restaurant I've found! As good as it gets and DEFINITELY AUTHENTIC. I've been to Thai Flavors a couple of times and tried over 4 or 5 dishes but it just didn't hit the spot. I came here and picked up a togo order of pad thai on my way home from work and it was absolutely delish! A very simple dish - and the key to getting this dish perfect all lies within the sauce they use to flavor the noodles. It was perfect and well balanced with a hint of tang from the lime mixed with fish sauce. I already had a hunch that this place would be authentic by the aroma that filled the car on my way back. And indeed - I was mesmerized as I took the first bite - just like in Thailand! No froo-froo westernized dishes with diluted and bland tastes. Yes - it's that good that I had to stop eating to write this review, fearing I may forget to tell all you yelpers looking for an authentic Thai restaurant out here. This place is fantastic. I recently moved back to Richmond and Tip Thai is pretty close to my house. The food is great. I regularly get the Pad Kapow and Pad Prik Khing, which are excellent, and am excited to try their currys. The lettuce wraps, egg rolls, and hot and sour soup are all great. One nice thing is that they aren't afraid to spice it up. They offer thai hot on a scale of 1-3 stars. Thai 3 is legit spicy. Usually I can get thai hot and it's not too bad. Thai hot 3 here and I'm pretty sweaty, in a good way. The location is a not the most charming, but the staff are friendly, the food is great, and it's reasonably priced. Most stir-fry dishes are under $10. Check it out! read more

We met up with a long time friend of mine from NYC at Tip Thai because it was easy to find, convenient parking and it was Asian. Based on the reviews, I though it'd be pretty good. But Yelp in Richmond isn't all that reliable...so I've noticed. Anyways, we ordered Pad Thai (someone once told me you can judge a good Thai restaurant by their most basic dish..Pad Thai), a house specialty with king prawns prawns with an s...meaning they gave you the minimum 2 prawnS) and green curry. The Pad Thai was so acidic. I don't even know why...too much fish sauce? too much lemon? I don't know. It wasn't good though that's for sure. The house specialty looked appetizing with it's beautiful golden brown glaze. If only I could get full with my eyes and not having to eat it... It was like someone took sweet and sour sauce from McDonald's put some soy sauce in it, stirred it together and threw my two prawns in it. Lame. The green curry was hella sweet. Did they add sugar to my curry? It was not what I expected it to be at all. I'm hoping that it was a slow day and they sent the chef home because seriously...how else do you explain what happened here? I know the people that worked there were Thai because my mom speaks Thai and it sounded exactly like it...but by the cooking you could've fooled me. I'm all about supporting small local restaurants but give me something to rave about. This place is awesome. Their "Ginger Perfect" dish is in fact perfect- full of real ginger, perfectly portioned and refreshing. I like it with chicken. I also got their tofu soup which was very slightly sweet, salty, and overall DELICIOUS. It rivals a classic chicken noodle any day. I have to agree with Kristen, the previous reviewer, this Thai Restaurant is the best Richmond has to offer. They make everything fresh, and the cook has a fantastic palate. The food is always perfectly seasoned and it's the real deal. I have an allergy to soy, which is used in most cooking establishments due to how cheap it is and makes it almost impossible for me to eat out. Well, I'm happily in luck at Tip Thai, they never use any oil in their curries. The food recently just has not been as good as it used to be. Decent, "a-ok", but my recent orders have suffered from a slight lack of flavor. Order pad thai to go, 4 stars spicy. What I recieved was bland, vinegar tasting, and overcooked. The 4 small pieces of chicken in my pad thai were cooked well, which I guess is something. Tip Thai is in an unassuming strip mall on Staples Mill Road, but once again, if you follow your nose, and the locals, you'll come up with a winner. The dishes we had were full of flavor, the meats and vegetables were fresh, and the portions were generous. You can also vary your level of spice, and change the type of protein for ANY dish on the menu. Lots of choices for those with allergies to dairy and beef, I'd be careful with the nut allergies as many dishes have tree nuts or sauces. You could do worse for Thai food, and we have, but we'll go back to sample some more dishes soon. read more

My Thai friend brought me here and said it was authentic. Excellent service and hospitality. I got the Tom Kha Gai, which was very milky and flavorful. The beef salad was absolutely delicious and I paired it with an order of perfectly cooked sticky rice. Prices were very reasonable too! read more

I ate here today for the first time, as I've endeavored to eat at just about every Richmond area Thai restaurant I can come across (I don't count Tara Thai, that's more of a DC chain flowover). Anyway, it was pretty decent Thai food, though I can't say it's the absolute best in the area. The Tom Khar I got was very coconutty and delicious, arguably the best thing I got. I had ordered vegetable tempura as well, which is pretty hard to mess up, but it was instead coated in a crumbly coating, like Thai mozzarella sticks, and not actually tempura-coated. The fried pineapple was the only saving grace. Instead of the typical sweet and sour chili sauce, I was given pretty stock-tasting and -looking sauce which didn't compliment the coating. Worst part of my meal. Finally, I had gotten the Gang Panang, which while DELICIOUS, had far too much sauce and not enough vegetables or tofu. I feel that they got some elements of the food incredibly right and some very wrong, which lends to my "ehhhh" rating of three stars. read more

I went here for lunch a couple of weeks ago and thought it was pretty darn amazing. It had been a very awhile since I had stuffed my face full of some really good Thai food, so I'd forgotten what I had been missing out on. I wish this place was closer to my home! I ordered the lunch khua gai, which came with a small cup of tom yum soup. Very fresh food, and not at all as greasy like I'm used to getting at the Thai restaurants downtown [not that greasy is always a bad thing, but this was definitely a big improvement]. Prices were fair, although the service was a little slow, especially for the 12:30 lunch rush. My favorite part is the 6-tier heat scale, where you can pick from mild, medium, hot, one-star, two-star, or three-star. I normally aim for upper-middle, but until I went to Tip Thai, no one in Richmond was really able to match my heat expectations - everyone always fell wayyyy too short. So well-done Tip Thai. Ate lunch here on a Monday with a colleague. Their lunch menu features about 15 dishes that you can choose from, for $6.95. I ordered the Cashew Chicken and my colleague ordered one of the veggie-only dishes. Both were skimpy on portions and somewhat bland in color and taste, as was the skinny fried spring roll. The egg drop soup wasn't the best either. We were there during the prime lunch period, and 75% of the restaurant was empty. Service wasn't that great either. There was only one waitress and one cook. The waitress never checked up on us after taking our order, and never came by to refill our drinks. I'm guessing there are better Asian restaurants nearby. read more

Ok....the restroom was horrible...dirty!!! About food, Tom Yong Goon was bland and on sour side, not good. Sauce for spring rolls was on the sweet side. Papaya salad was pretty good. As for PAD Thai, pale looking, bland and beefy. Needs a lot of work on those dishes. I can find better thai food in town, so this one is out. read more

My husband and I regularly drive all the way across town to come here. The food is really good and we have both enjoyed it every time we've gone. The pad thai is great, as is the chicken fried rice and chicken rama. The fresh spring rolls are delicious too, and so is everything else that I have tried off the menu. The service is always fast, it is a nice, quiet, affordable place, and I think it is nice to go somewhere that isn't a huge chain restaurant like most places around here are. We've had the same waitress every time, and she is always very friendly and accommodating with changes to our orders, like extra veggies, etc. I would definitely suggest trying this place out! read more

I decided to try Tip Thai out of curiosity since I was in Lakeside.I usually go to the same Thai restaurants, so I decided to try something different than my regular spots. The Thai food I ordered was pretty average.The pad see ew dish was a bit bland compared to other pad see ew dishes I've eatten.The restaurant wasn't packed so the service was good and fast.The manager of the restaurant was really nice.The atmosphere was really laid back with a quiet noise level.Although my dish was average,I appreciate the friendliness of the employees.If you want a more laid back Thai restaurant ,Tip Thai is worthy. Thai diner too, Thai diner, elephant thai, tara thai, thai flavor. Yep, maybe not the most impressive list of places to compare too, but Tip Thai is still better than all those places. Their ingredients just seem fresh, and you can really taste the herbs/spices. I'm asian but not Thai, so no I can't vouch for authenticity or anything, but this is place is good. Drove by this place twice trying to find it, even though the lettering is huge and easily visible, just wasn't expecting it to take up entire left half of a shopping strip. Ordered the Massaman curry and Pad See-Ew. Couldn't decide, so went with both. They were both delicious, opted to go Medium with the heat on the curry. Still was pretty mild and I battle with spicy. Flat noodles were cooked perfectly and the tofu they gladly subbed in on both dishes was a really nice texture and held the sauce well. All veggies were cooked just right and potatoes broke apart easily which was great. Curry sauce, perfect consistency. I just had takeout, but the lady was extremely friendly. Now this is some seriously good Thai food! We've been there twice in the last month and it's very much across town. I hate to say I don't know what exactly I had but it was a pork dish and the other time a seafood dish! The egg rolls ...both the wrap and fried are wonderful! My wife had the shrimp and broccoli dish and I tasted that, too! I'm really putting this w/ the best Thai food in town. Great service. They have a major league carry out business. One lady told us she picks up a dish at least twice a week. Both times we were there......I'd guess a half dozen or more people picked up their food "to go"....I'm ready to go again!
