I LOVE this place. I've come here for years and it's consistently been a fave dine-in Thai food experience. However, I recently got takeout - and it was just fantastic. The pad Thai here is the best of the best. The takeout portion is so huge, but not overly oily or heavy. The veggies were fresh, the chicken was tender, and the proportions were perfect. The Tom yum soup is also delicious - my remedy for any cold! Both the summer rolls and fried veggie rolls were also great - the fried roll wasn't greasy and was super crispy and awesome. So yummy! First time having Thai food. I would love to try more. The place mostly does carry out orders but we dined in. It's a small space and everything was clean and service was quick. My friend and I shared the apps for two which was the perfect app for two people. I loved the crab tempura and fried wontons. They had a special on crab and shrimp fried rice which so good. Always have such an amazing experience at Thai Diner! Some of the best Thai food I have EVER had, no exaggeration. Everything is so flavorful and fresh. They give you a complimentary little salad at the beginning of every meal. Today I tried the panang curry and it blew my socks off! I am completely obsessed and can predict that I will need to come back for that on a regular basis. The pad see ew is also phenomenal! It's a small family owned business. They are very warm and welcoming. The first time I went there for lunch, I was in a bit of a hurry to eat bc I was on a lunch break. And the owner Rachel saw me rushing and told me 'you are welcome to stay as long as you like'. It really feels like you are having a homemade meal. They put a lot of care into what they do. The owner told me they eat all of the food that they have on their menu, they would never send out a dish to someone if it isn't up to their high standards. The service was super quick and the place is very cleanly. It is quaint and cozy. Definitely my favorite Thai place. So happy to have found this spot. 10/10 read more

I ordered drunken noodles and Thai cucumber salad for my lunch, and got it for takeout. For the noodles, I ordered medium spicy and extra veggies with chicken. To me it was just okay...definitely not worth a special trip. The cucumber salad was really sweet and was lacking acid. The decor is pretty tired too. As with other places found on this list, I was pretty impressed with Thai Diner as well. --Food: We ordered the Pad Prik Pao and the Goong Prik Sod. Each came with a side of rice. The Pad Prik Pao has chicken, onions, and mushrooms in a spicy chili paste. For me, it's hard to not like a stir fry with some of my favorite vegetables. I've actually started putting mushrooms and onions in my homemade stir fries after being convinced by local Thai places such as Thai Diner of how amazing they are. The Goong Prik Sod had shrimp, carrots, bell peppers, and green onions. I will say I thought the rice was a touch on the dry side, but when placed in the dish and scooped up with the sauce, it wasn't a problem. There are a lot of tasty sounding items on the menu as well. Basically any kind of protein, vegetable combo, and rice / noodles you want you can probably order. Definitely will try more in future visits. --Cost: Affordable! Both dishes together came to $25ish. --Service: We came here on Easter and it wasn't busy at all. (Probably because most people are eating dinner with their families at home.) Service was fast and attentive. --Atmosphere: Honestly very interesting, hah. The inside has a bunch of tables that have different colors and sparkles. It's a strange thing to compare it to, but the colors are sort of reminiscent of Rock and Bowl at a bowling alley. (Minus the loud music and, well, the bowling.) If that sounds like a bad thing, it's not. Just don't don't be surprised by the multicolored, sparkly tables. The actual restaurant is in a non-fancy / non-crowded shopping plaza so parking is super easy. --Overall: We really liked it. I will NEVER return to the Thai Diner and if I could give -100 stars I would. I have never been so disrespected and displeased in quite some time. Thai Diner, did it tonight. Years ago, I used to frequent this restaurant when it was under different management and prior to their downsize. Within the last 45 days, I've been here 3 times. The first time I ordered the rice noodles in a bowl with wonton and it was pretty good. The second time I ordered the rice noodle dry, it was really good and served on a plate with vegetables. Tonight I ordered rice noodles, dry. They were served in a bowl with wonton. I attempted to ask the server if what she served me was what I ordered or did I order the wrong dish? The middle aged server immediately got an attitude and walked away before I could get 3 words out of my mouth, returned with a menu and slammed it down on the table. I was offended, my daughter said to me, maybe I misread the server's actions and maybe she wasn't really being disrespectful. (See my pic of the plain bowl of noodles with brown sauce and wonton compared to other dishes). After dinner, an older lady brought my check and told me as she place it on the table, "please leave a tip for the server, thank you. " At this point, I feel a huge slap in the face by the blatant disrespect. As if the 1st act of direct was questionable, this act is truly very clear and deliberate. (I'm a responsible adult, why do you feel the need to tell me to leave a tip is what I was thinking???) My daughter, says, "let it go." As I attempted to process what I was just told, I also did some observing to see if this is a common practice or am I the only one getting this "Special Treatment". I called the older lady (the manager) who told me to leave a tip, I politely told her, I noticed she never told any of the other 3 parties to leave a tip and why was I singled out? I also mentioned the disrespect from her server that she told me to leave a tip for. I'm trying hard not to make it about race, however out of the 3 parties there, my daughter and I were the only ones of color there. Instead, I asked her is it my attire (sweat pants & sweat shirt)? She replies, "I want you top leave a tip." I reminded this woman I've been to her establishment 3 times within 45 days, today, I drove 1.5 hours to the Thai Diner because my daughter wanted to have dinner there and I ALWAYS leave a tip. I reminded her of my last visit, when I found a huge piece of hard plastic in my food, I didn't make a scene, I politely notified the server, showed her the huge piece of hard plastic, paid my bill, left a tip and left Thai Diner. The manager replied, "yes, I remember, we only charged you half price." This review is of my personal experience, I have no intentions of going back. Whether my poor, disrespectful service was a result of racism or mistaken identity of a customer who doesn't tip, I'm not here to persuade the readers of this review one way or the other. The ladies working there were incredibly friendly. The menu was a good size, many different options. I came here wanting pad Thai so much but ending up ordering the Green Thai curry as I wanted to try something new, and our waitress was very convincing and personable. My friend had the drunken noodles (Thai hot). Even though she had ordered them hot, they were not really all that hot, I am thinking that since she was so hesitant to order them like that our waitress got the hint and asked the chef not to make them too hot. Wow! My friend has been telling me about this place for years. She has raved about it. I loved everything about it. It's in a strip mall so there is no problem with parking at all. It's a small place and kinda made you feel like you were in the West village of New York. The food was outstanding! I enjoyed the pad Thai and the curried vegetables and the special noodle dish. The spices were just as we ordered. Not too hot and not too overwhelming. Lots of times Thai and Indian restaurants fail on this score. It was al just perfectly done. The decor and ambience was delightful with Asian art and sculptures and good soft music in the background. And we had a samplers plate of delicious appetizers. The tempura shrimp was crispy and not over breaded. The dumplings were pocket of heaven. The wontons were thin and disappointing. But the dipping cucumber spicy sauce was unique and an excellent pairing with all of the appetizers. I loved the wait staff and the service. They were patient and friendly. Me and my bros went to Thai Diner after a brutal workout at a nearby gym. That's the story lol; here's the details. The parking is plentiful as it's set in a strip mall. Seating is cozy but comfortable. There are about 12 or so tables, a few with larger group seating, and a small bar with a couple takeout waiting seats. The staff was attentive, nice and thorough. We had a group of six and our drinks orders and food came out quickly and correctly for everyone. And we were there till close and they were completely cool about it. And now the food; I had the shrimp and crab fried rice and it was great. REAL actual crab meat was in there, no imitation junk. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and so was the rice. The flavor was mild but delicious and there were a bunch of sauces and oils brought to try along with it. I also had an app called a "money bag" i think that's what it was called anyway...it was a really cool take on a dumpling. It's fried crispy in the shape of a coin sack, and the inside is filled with a tasty moist flavorful filling. Really good stuff. I ave been coming here for years and realized that I had never reviewed the place, so here goes! First, a little history. This places used to be a High's dairy store that had a little lunch counter that served Thai food. Eventually, the owners realized that people were going there for the Thai food and not the ice cream so they converted it into a restaurant. It was one of the first Thai restaurants in Richmond. Over the years it has won many awards as the best Thai in town, and for the most part it is deserved. All of the bases are covered with their menu and they have some seasonal dishes on there as well. I tend to stick to the basics such as Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, and the noodle dishes, but their Thai fried rice is amazing. They will will spice it up to your liking, but be careful with "Thai Hot", as they seem to take it as a challenge to set you on fire. I will say that the service is always excellent, but there has been a little inconsistency with the food the last couple of times I was there. The flavor just wasn't quite as good and savory as it has been in the past. I will still give it four starts and hope that this was only a glitch. read more
