Chadar is our local Thai favorite (& I have tried many over the years)-- everything we have had is excellent (massaman curry with beef, Panang with chicken and extra veggies, pot stickers, dumplings, basil fried rice are favorites. Chadar is located in a strip mall. The same strip mall several other places I have written about are located. This is turning into a mecca of really good food. Chadar is legit Thai food. The curries are excellent. The team takes heat levels seriously -- thai hot is thai hot, american hot is american hot -- and all the appetizers we have tried are very good. we highly recommend the crying tiger -- the dipping sauce that accompanies really makes a memory. I like Chedar a lot. A smaller restaurant with a very laid back and quiet ambiance. Good for a date or smaller gatherings. Chedar offers some standout appetizers: the shrimp spring rolls and the crab Rangoon are some of the best I've had anywhere. The crab Rangoon is loaded with filling. This is my go to place if in the mood for a Thai curry dish; the green curry and Penang curry are excellent and herbs and vegetables always fresh. Note that Chedar tends to be spicier than other restaurants so I suggest starting with a spice level below what you might typically order. Alcoholic beverages are available as well as Thai teas. There are a variety of homemade ice creams for dessert. Service has been consistently excellent. Definitely worth a try! read more

Lunchbox is possibly my favorite thing I've had at a restaurant. You get a little salad, a bit of an appetizer, your main dish, and a little slice of cake. Perfect portions for lunch. I had the pad see ew with medium spicy (it was perfect!), crab Rangoon, and the cake was chocolate. It was all very delicious. Had a Thai tea that was fabulous. Went for my birthday. Wanted Thai but didn't know where. Chose based on Yelp! Was surprised it was a "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant tucked into an older shopping center. But, sometimes those are best. That was definitely the case here. The old fashioned, dark wood, cozy atmosphere told me they had been in business many years. The service was excellent and the food was outstanding. We ordered a lunch (bento) box meal and were amazed at the large portion size and flavorful taste of the food. It was a very successful first visit to an unknown restaurant. Chadar Thai was close to my gym, and I heard pretty good things about them from my sister, so I invited her and some of my other friends here for dinner. Please see the description of the green curry that I got here. - Green Curry w/ Chicken [GET]: I like the green curry a lot, it was packed with flavors and spices. It has a lighter consistency and not as thick or creamy as other green curries I have had, but still tasty. Ingredients such as the eggplants, bamboo shoots, and peppers were fresh and cooked perfectly. I wasn't a big fan of the chicken, it was slightly overcooked and hard to chew at times. I wished it was more tender and juicy. I got medium for my spicy level, but if you are into spicy food, then get American or the Thai hot. Solid choice here, but I have had better curries in RVA. Ambiance: 3.75/5 - It is located in a strip shopping center, right next to Big Lots and from the exterior, it doesn't really look like a restaurant. There's a plenty of tables and booths available for indoor dining, so this is an ideal place for a date if you are looking for somewhere quiet. I got the chicken green curry for $12.95, and I believe it increases to $15.95 for the seafood combo. The price is pretty standard and similar to most Thai places here in RVA. In terms of worthiness, I'd say it's a good spot for a satisfying dinner, and definitely will fill you up. I just have a big appetite, so I was just okay. Service: 3.75/5 - There was only one staff working, but it wasn't too busy. He was polite and friendly, bought us water as soon as we sat down and took our orders. Although when I ask for food suggestions, he seems impatient and was very vague about it and was not that helpful. It was an okay experience, and he checked in with us once, so I am not complaining too much. BLUF: Decent and affordable Thai place, and I liked my experience there. I do not see myself returning anytime soon as I am trying to try all the different Thai places in the area at the moment. For takeout on a cold day, Chadar was exactly what we wanted. The curry puffs were delicious, wonderfully done. Flavorful and flaky and unexpected. The pumpkin curry smelled so amazing on the ride back it was all I could do to keep myself from trying to down the container while bouncing down the road. It's for the best, the mess would have been prolific. That curry is your new happy place. We also got the pineapple fried rice. We meant to order the pad pineapple entre. I wish that had worked out, I think we would have liked that more. Thailand is not known for chilly weather, but my goodness have they figured out what to get you through it. read more

Their prices have pretty much stayed the same even with inflation and I'd recommend going to their restaurant for lunch cause you can get some of their menu options for close to $10-11 and it'll fill ya up! read more

Went to Chadar Thai Restaurant today for the first time and was pleasantly surprised at how great my whole lunch was. I knew I wanted Pad Thai with shrimp with no heat which was awesome. I had 2 spring rolls with soy sauce and they were delicious too. The salad with light chili spice flavor dressing with fried wonton strips was surprisingly delicious too. I just didn't expect that and I'm so glad I tried it. My husband tried the pepper steak and thought medium heat would work for him but even though he ate it all (since it was so delicious) he is sure the next visit will include a mild heat instead. lol! Overall, for the lunch price, the portion was of good size and I loved every morsel. I recommend this restaurant highly and I'm looking forward to going back. Our server, Tuo (pronounced two) was excellent also. My husband shared his rice with me and that went great with my Pad Thai. read more

We all have our favorites, and this is one of mine. Their pineapple fried rice, Tom Kha soup, Massaman curry, Crying Tiger, spring rolls, summer rolls, and well, basically all of their appetizers are my personal favorites. They devein their shrimp, something not every place does. The way they cut their calamari really stands out as well--as it's done in such a way that the squid maintains its soft texture. Whoever is in the kitchen knows their stuff! Their portion sizes are generally very generous. This includes their (non-alcoholic!) drinks, including items like Thai Iced Tea! I think they're very careful about the heat, so for my heat fiend of a father, he needs to ask for Thai hot. Meanwhile wimpy me is just fine hanging out with the mild! They do a robust takeout side of the business, but they're wonderful to visit in the restaurant as well. I will caution you if you eat in store though--you'll need to be patient! They usually have a waiter and a food runner--that's it for front of house staffing. This means sometimes you might wait a couple minutes at the door or you might find if there are larger parties in before you that your meal may take a little longer than you'd prefer. Trust me? Just be patient. Enjoy the time with your fellow diners. Personal recommendation: Go for the bowl sized portion of the soup--it's great for leftovers! read more

I still haven't tried the food here - but I do love coming back for the Thai Tea, which is served in these cute little cups with curly straws - and tastes pretty good, as well as being cheap. Recently we've been into Thai food but realized that we hadn't tried Chadar Thai, despite living essentially within walking distance. (I realized I hadn't finished this review, we went a couple months ago.) --Food: We ordered some Vegetable Spring Rolls, Pad Num Prik Pao, and Pad See Ew. The vegetable spring rolls tasted fresh. I had never really explored the world of Pad Prik dishes, but it was Chadar's that got me hooked initially. It's now my go-to food when I go to Thai Restaurants. The Pad Prik had peppers, mushrooms, onions, thai basil, chicken, and a spicy chili sauce. Everything in here was very tasty and had a spicy (ordered it hot) but flavorful sauce. The rice came in it's own little serving bowl. Cute. Fiancee got Pad See Ew with Shrimp, which she liked, but didn't love. Part of it was how much egg there was, as she isn't a huge fan of egg, but whether this isn't really an issue with the dish itself. I thought it looked pretty good at least. --Cost: Affordable. Any sort of entree for about $11 with veggies, chicken, and rice is fine by me. --Service: We didn't run into some of the issues listed by some other reviews. Staff was nice and reasonably fast. We went around 7:00 PM, so maybe that has something to do with it. --Atmosphere: It's next to Big Lots and from the outside does absolutely not look like a restaurant. Inside it's reasonably nice, however. Still a casual settings, but it's a nice sit down place. --Overall: I liked Chadar Thai. I haven't went there again as we've been trying all the different Thai places in the area, but I definitely will return as it is close, affordable, and tasty. read more

Chadar Thai was not good. The food was basic and the service sucked. We waited a long time for a certain dish that never even came out when we asked the waiter for it. They said we never ordered it even though everyone at our table heard it. They never refilled our waters and they only had two people working. The guy who took our order was rude and snappy like he didn't want to be there. He never smiled or anything. Every time we tried to order, he kept cutting us off and would say, "Hold on," and leave even though we were the only people there. Pretty rude and dry service. We had to wait 30 minutes just to order and it was just us there. They didn't even check up on us once, even though we had 11 people. No one got more water and they disappeared the whole time we were eating. The food was okay. Papaya salad lacked a lot of flavor - it barely had any sauce. There was this dumpling that looks like crab Rangoon, but it had chicken inside. That was the best thing there that we ate and that was just the appetizer. Everything else wasn't that good. I'd rather eat at Mom's Siam. I have tried many other places that were much better. This is definitely not my first choice to go to. I would say 1.5 stars, barely 2 stars. read more

This place has amazing food & flavor. I've been here twice and gotten the Pad Woon Sen & their Drunken Noodle. They use fresh noodles and each dish has amazing depth of Thai flavor.
