We came across Electric Chen earlier this afternoon after noticing their very high reviews on Yelp! But as I am always cautious when it comes to review scores that seem too good to be true, I often look to the negative reviews written. When I noticed those negative reviews were a bit strangely worded and felt a bit subjective, I decided to contact Electric Chen via Yelp's convenient "request quote" system. I was pleasantly surprised when I received a reply quite quickly. I was looking for assistance with installing a Level 2 EV charger. Robert (the owner) proceeded to ask a series of questions to try and understand my situation. I was extremely impressed with the level of detail and care Robert personally has for his customers. While many contractors are often looking to set up a job and then move on, Robert (who personally works on each and every one of their projects) carefully takes the time to explain all the things one might wish to consider, giving me the space to make the decision I need, but all the while providing me with all the knowledge I need to have to make the best decision possible. I asked Robert a lot of questions and was able to learn a lot. For instance, I learned that the total amperage you have going to your main box and the wire gauge you use is quite important. I also learned so much about breakers and the different things to consider. What many owners don't realize is that if they only have a certain amperage going to their house, you can overload and burn out your system with an electrical fire. Many owners also don't realize that even if you have a 220v outlet in your garage (ie. the type that some garages have for a dryer hookup), if you directly plug in a Level 2 EV charger into that it can be dangerous. While the plug fits and it may be tempting to plug a car charger into a dryer outlet to save money, the wire gauge beyond the 220v outlet is so thin that a Level 2 EV charger can overheat and burnt everything out. Robert patiently took the time to show me the difference in wire gauge and I was so surprised. Not surprisingly- for many EV owners, sadly, this is something that they go through and learn the hard way because this is something most people don't realize. Robert is licensed, extremely knowledgeable and patient. He is also a great listener. While I likely asked more questions than most, the great thing is that he can actually simplify things as well if you want to keep things easy and straight-forward. However, perhaps the best thing about Robert is the quality of his work and his honesty and how upfront he is in terms of his rates. I compared their rates with other companies, and the pricing they offer is incredible. Sometimes with lower pricing contractors may cut corners; Robert is one of those people who will have trouble sleeping at night if he did that. He does not cut any corners. He prefers to use quality materials and provides excellent attention to detail to every aspect of the installation process. For instance, when considering placement of my EV charger, Robert provided many suggestions in terms of convenience and minimizing installation cost, all the while patiently giving me the space to decide what I felt would be best! (Most companies seek to maximize their revenue/profit, but for Robert it seems he would rather have a happy customer.) Everything was done carefully yet quickly, so one can easily tell the considerable experience he has installing EV chargers. From beginning to end, it only took Robert just a couple of hours to finish the install. I also noticed that he carefully used a leveler to align everything he was installing, and the box he installed was seemlessly and very professionally integrated into the wall. Afterwards, before accepting any payment, Robert also took the time to show me everything he did, sharing all the details of his work. He also helped me to test out the EV charger, patiently making sure everything was working correctly. After the installation, he even meticulously swept up the tiny bit of left over debris from the installation. I cannot recommend Robert and his company Electric Chen enough. Robert Chen did another stellar job for us. We installed 2 wired Ring Cameras. Robert discussed the install with us and gave us choices, did you want conduit run along the eaves? did you want to run it through the walls (but we had to repair the wall afterwards). We selected the "clean installation" with the wires fished through the walls, which was obviously extra work. We didn't want extraneous wires under the eaves or up the side of the house. The measurements, the careful pulling of wires through wood fire walls (one had to be drilled), the clean cuts on the wall and the sheet rock that was cut was screwed back in neatly. We will putty the wall, spray on some texture, sand and paint. Robert is meticulous with his work and has worked on our EV charger (how we met him), electrical short in the kitchen, installation of our electrical outlet for 2 bidets and now the wired Ring cameras. We hired Robert for our CFL-to-LED conversion project and are absolutely thrilled with the result! Our kitchen is much brighter now and feels more luxurious. I had issues with several outlets in my house as they intermittently stop and start working. Additionally I had an ancient bathroom fan that needed to be replaced, it sounded like a lawnmower engine every time I turned it on. I reached out to several electricians and Robert was affordable compared to other quotes from other electricians. He gave a fixed quote and time estimate of how long it would take to replace the bathroom fan. For the intermittent outlets he was unsure as he would have to check the wiring and test each outlet. Once he started on the bathroom fan it turned out it was so old that extra parts needed to be purchased. Robert did not hesitate to go to Home Depot to purchase them. After working non-stop for a few hours and custom fitting some parts, he was able to replace my bathroom fan. He spent more time than originally estimated and purchased extra parts, but he stayed true to his original quote and did not request for more money. Unfortunately since he had spent more time than originally planned he had to go to his next appointment and was not able to check out the intermittent outlets. We were interested to have our very old (and potential fire hazard) subpanel replaced and at the same time install a NEMA-1450 240V outlet in order to be able to charge an EV. Robert provided an initial estimate based on images I shared with him, but per my request came out to look at the job. When he came out he was very patient in explaining what needed to be done, provide recommendations, and listen to my input and concerns. He was one of the few people willing to come out to provide an estimate which I appreciated, as I did not want any surprises on the day of the work based on virtual estimates. Highly recommend Robert at Electric Chen. We hired him to replace our main panel, an original fusebox from the 1950s, and upgrade to a modern panel with 200A service. Pricing was competitive with others, and he earned every bit of it. He was very thorough, timely, and professional. He came by to look over our old panel before taking our deposit, and immediately applied for PGE and building permits. After those came through, he scheduled us soon. The entire job took a few days, with the main install on one long day from 9-7pm, and a few other shorter days for ground rod prep work, and inspections. Jan 2024 We hired Robert a year ago to install a Tesla wall charger at our home. We could not be more pleased. See 1st review 1 year ago. Fast forward, our Rivian R1S arrived. We needed to install a Rivian wall charger at our 2nd property. We did not hesitate and to call Robert. He and his partner arrived 30min early on a Saturday morning (to ensure they won't be late( (since they had to commute 20 miles). At this property, we were using a mobile charger that is kept plugged into a NEMA 14-50 wired to a 50 amp circuit breaker. This setup was supplying 32 amp to the vehicle. To replace the existing setup with a Rivian Wall charger, the following things will need to be done: 1. Install new 60amps circuit breaker and reconfigure existing breakers in electrical panel box 2. Install a new conduit wire from.panel box to opposite side of the garage (wall charger location) After long pro and con discussions , Robert's recommendation was that we do not install the wall charger and continue using the mobile charger (existing setup). Reason: The high installation cost does not out weight the benefit of increasing the charging speed from 32 Amp to 48 Amp. Yes, 32 amp is a bit slower, however, 32 amps is fully adequate provide most charging needs over night. We agree based on personal experiences. Now, we have a brand new Rivian Wall charger to sell if anyone is interested. Thank you Robert for doing the right thing. The icing on the cake was that service call was complementary. Robert installed a level 2 charger for me. He was very responsive and gave the best price. In person, he was very friendly. The installation looks great and works fine. However, I don't feel he was transparent. When he arrived, he pushed hard to install an outlet instead of hardwiring, as I had requested on the phone. I accepted his reasoning that it would be easier to use a plug in the future, but later read that hardwiring is more complex to do than an outlet. This matters in context with the following: After the installation was done, he explained that (1) he had installed a standard circuit breaker instead of a GFCI breaker, claiming that this satisfied the code, but would need to be switched if I went for a city permit, and (2) he had wired the outlet for 32 Amps instead of the standard 40 Amps (i.e. charger will work more slowly). I looked it up, and the code requires a GFCI breaker (though this was not a requirement until 2020), which costs $125. Also, 40 Amp wiring apparently costs more than 32 Amp wiring. So while the installation will work for my purposes, the lower price simply means he took the simpler installation route and used cheaper materials. I like to support local businesses, but I'm writing this review because I chose Robert on the basis of the Yelp reviews. read more

I had a Gen 1 Tesla Wall Charger that was installed in 2013....fast forward to November 2023. The Gen 1 Wall Charger stopped working. As it was a Gen 1 charger, Tesla couldn't do anything to diagnose other than to replace it. I contacted Robert on Friday morning. We were in constant communication on how we should proceed. He suggested that I pick up a new Gen 3 charger but don't open it in case I didn't need it. Since I had a charger there already, we could go down 2 paths...1. Replace the Gen 1 with a Gen 3. 2. If there were 4 wires including the ground, I could replace the Gen 1 with a NEMA 14-50 outlet where I can plug any NEMA 14-50 device into it such as the portable Tesla Charger. He gave me a very fair quote for the work which I appreciated it and we scheduled for him to come on Saturday at 1:30pm. He came on Saturday at the time he said he was going to be there...exactly at 1:30pm on the dot. I showed him where the Gen 1 charger was and after he removed the Gen 1 charger and saw the wires, he want to the subpanel to see what was connected, etc. Based on what was there, we had to go with Option 1..replace Gen 1 with Gen 3. He got to work and after 30 mins to 45 mins...he was done. Everything was in its place and then he asked me to test the charging. It worked flawlessly. I was very happy with Robert for these reasons: 1. Prompt and on time 2. Discussed options and planned the solution with me 3. Stayed to make sure that the work was done right 4. His quote is what I paid...no upcharges...fair and honest 5. Had time in his schedule to take on my project I will definitely call Robert and Electric Chen for future electrical needs.
