Regular prices maybe not so much so, but they'll be a bit larger. Come for lunch since they do all the cooking every morning before they open and they may open late if they're not ready yet. And if you're stuck waiting outside for them to open for lunch, you won't be the only one. Today, for instance, there were five other cars sitting idle, waiting too. So it must be a well known landmark in the area. Brown stewed chicken was excellent, as were the cabbage and even the rice and beans (which I rarely talk about). I would order it again although I don't think I'm the best judge in terms of telling you what is authentic and what isn't, since I did taste a bit of bbq flavor. Texan twist, maybe? Carrot juice was for some reason sweet - not quite a fan but I'm sure it'll grow on you if you keep drinking it. Lol. After reading several reviews I decided to give this place a try. As many others have said the parking was not the best. Although there are lined spaces, it's just not enough parking and thus people make up there own. Inside, the eatery is spacious and there is seating for you to enjoy your meal as well as a tv for entertainment as you wait. The process to order food was quick although it was very difficult to look over the menu prior. They have a menu above the register with font so small it's not legible. So as a new customer when it was my turn to order, I needed time to look over the menu. I was politely asked to step to the side to review a paper menu as to not slow the line. I ordered the medium size jerk chicken and a friend ordered the curry. The serving sizes were adequate for both but the flavors were just not what we expected of authentic Caribbean cuisine. The jerk for example did not taste like jerk chicken. It was spicy which was good but the chicken skin was soggy and had a red hue to the meat. Any place off of a MLK boulevard is going to smack, let's just get that out there. Upon arriving there were several cars parked like they ran out of a vehicle during an apocalypse. I mean no order at all in the parking lot. Line: the line inside was long and the waiting room full. The menu is posted in front of the register in maybe a size 12 font so not much help there. Luckily I was with a group so had time to look over the single physical copy. Wait time: they have a flat screen posted to entertain guest who are most likely waiting 25+ minutes. Everyone seemed like a regular and pretty chill about the wait time(mostly). The community atmosphere was appreciated and added to the hole in the wall ambiance I know and love. Food: the curry chicken was superb! Cabbage and rice and peas were pretty standard but still delicious. The jerk chicken is SPICY no cap, we were pre warned by the waitress so proceed with caution. The Mac and cheese was Caribbean meaning slightly garlicy, probably prepped on the stove and baked for a little. Nothing to write home about but balanced out the flavors. They also have a wide variety of deserts and other Caribbean food. Locals raved about the oxtails so give those a try as well. All and all this this was the best Caribbean I've had in Texas to date. At around 2 on a Saturday, it was full. Had to find street parking at a nearby neighborhood. A line soon piled up after we had stood to place our order. There's a choice of small/medium/large plates with the choice of rice & peas or rice & cabbage. Not all entrees have the choice of small. (Curry Goat and Oxtail isn't offered in small.) Decided to go with the oxtail with rice & peas ($11.50). Not exactly what I call hole in the wall prices, but the portion was decent. The oxtail was very flavorful. Someone came up to me and asked what I had probably because it looked so good. One gripe is that there was one "oxtail" that was thrown in there, but it was PURE FAT. Driving into Elaine's parking lot, I noticed the first sign of good Caribbean food eateries, limited parking. There were soo many cars , the parking lot, was filled. We ended up parking on the grass. Second Authentic Caribbean restaurant characteristic was long lines. The line was not ridiculously long but, it seemed like it took us forever to order. The line was backed up and orders weren't being expedited as a result the sassy in a good way lady taking the order stopped at us and decided to switch roles and take on the previously open position of expediter. .........Finally we get to order the sassy in a good way lady opened up with a "yeeeees, ya ready ? So glad I wasn't the one who paid for the food. The beef patty looked disgusting inside (there's a picture below from someone else). The taste was just okay. The oxtail was fine as far as meat/fat ratio but I did not like that gravy at all. The rice and peas were on the dry side. But that cabbage?! What in the world! Coming from New York I loved Caribbean food. We got the jerk chicken platter and oxtail. I have to say the oxtail is the way to go. The oxtail was fall off the bone and the flavor was really good. Everything else on the platter was just ok but the oxtail itself was amazing. The jerk chicken was a little disappointing. Normally I get dry jerk chicken which is oven roasted but they place a sweet sauce over their chicken which was a little weird for me. The chicken itself was kind of spicy too. I would get the curry chicken over the jerk chicken if you prefer chicken. I also got the beef patty which was really good. They also have a chicken patty if you prefer chicken. I was skeptical at first Bc I had never tried Jamaican food. Thanks to a friends invite to Elaine's I finally tried it out and fell in love. So did my 7 year old. She's pretty picky when it comes to food but she tried it and couldn't stop eating it. She really loved their lemonade! It's super sweet. Like let the ice melt overnight and it still be sweet In the morning type of sweet lol! Only issue I had was the homeless man in the parking lot yelling at me to help him out and let him clean my windows. I've been anticipating my trip here for a few weeks. Took some time to gather folks from work to follow me on my hunch that this place would be good. Quick edit: I spoke with a real nice older lady before I left to tell her how much I enjoyed lunch. Salt and pepper hair with a Jamaica shirt on and a nice thick Island accent. Little old Jamaican ladies in the kitchen should clue you to how good this is! So, as anyone from around here can imagine, the neighborhood is a bit rough. I did feel a bit out of place but was treated well and service was friendly with a bit of a smile even. The restaurant is exceptionally clean, while I didn't use the restroom you can see the kitchen is shiny and looks pretty damn spotless as well. Lots of Caribbean favorites here (didn't see Red Stripe tho ;) ). The food comes in Sm, Med and Large along with patties and hot water cornbread on the menu. Sm - I'll estimate 14-20 oz of food Med - 20-24 oz of food Large - 24-36 On my plate (I got the small goat curry and a meat patty) I had half a potato about a quarter to half pound of succulent goat in a heavily spiced curry, 1 big helping of cabbage (yum) and beans and rice (also heavily spiced and yum). This was the small... Buddy A got a medium jerk chicken, slightly larger cabbage and rice portions but what I'd call half a chicken straight up. I tried the sauce and the chicken was very sweet and heavily spiced. Me personally I like it effin hot so it didn't do much for me. He proudly proclaimed this better than Caribbean Grill. Buddy B got the large jerk chicken and meat patty. He's a body builder/powerlifter so I figured how big could it be and will he kill it. Dude... this was a ton of food. He got a full platter split with cabbage and beans and a separate size bowl of just jerk chicken (same size as my entire entree for reference). I swear to you, it was a whole chick and maybe a few pieces more. Portions are LARGE. The to-go boxes as mentioned do screw you so I'll recommend you order it for there, have a bite then get a to-go ;). The patties by the way were DELICIOUS! They had some scotch bonnet sauce on the table little sweet, little vinegary and nice heat. Went good on everything I put it on. I'm debating next time just getting lots of patty's... those things are BAD ASS and for 1.85 not too pricey either. Beware, I burned the ever loving $#@! out of my mouth, the inside was like lava ;).
