I was in Mesquite on a Saturday morning for a memorial service, so after the preacher delivered his words -- which took forever -- I was starving for some Comfort Food. I would have just jumped in the ride and followed everybody to the repass/repast and ate there, but it was in Dallas. Specifically Oak Cliff. Like 37 minutes away according to GPS. I was like, "Umm, No. Family, I love yall, but he went too long, and I'm hungry NOW." Thankfully, Jamaican Cook Shop was just up the road. This was my first visit. The restaurant is in a busy but small strip shopping center. The inside of the restaurant screams Mom-n-Pop-Dive-Spot and is adequately decorated in Jamaican themes and colors. There are about eight small tables for dining. The restaurant is counters service. I didn't spy a traditional menu board. Pictures of the food with names of dishes are simply posted on one wall, and there's a well-worn menu on the counter from which to order. I ordered the small Jerk Chicken entree (2 pcs. of bird) which comes with two sides. My sides were plantains and cabbage. The friendly young woman at the counter was helpful in suggesting her favorite sides. OK, now to the food. This was really good Jamaican food. The entree was provided in a quality plastic container with lid suitable for any leftovers. My order came with a leg and a thigh, and the chicken was moist and tender with plenty of jerk sauce around it. The bird had excellent flavor, and even leaned to the spicy side, which was a plus. The sides tasted freshly prepared. The entree at $14-and-some-change was reasonably priced. There was steady traffic during my visit. I'm gonna bookmark this place for any time I'm passing thru or near Mesquite for a good solid comforting meal. read more

This place was pretty fire. Flavors hit although I had recieved quite a bit of fatty pieces with my jerk chicken plate. Lots of Jamaican drink choices. Patties came out fresh and crisp, but would have liked more of a golden color to mine. Service was cool, it just took a really long time (45-50min wait). I hate to do this because it's a small business but I ordered the large oxtails and my oxtails were so tiny and very fatty I was so disappointed. The service wasn't bad but it's really dusty in the inside there's dust caked up in the fans and different areas. read more

This was my second time going and from both experiences the food is consistent. The food is flavored very well on the oxtails and sides. I will say combining around lunch my food came out much faster than ordering close at dinner time but regardless the food is worth the wait. Came here on a weekday for lunch with a friend who is Jamaican. We both got the special and oh boy, you get a over the top full container! We definitely had to take home. I got the jerk chicken and the curry chicken, both very flavorful. The jerk chicken had a lovely kick to it and deep flavor. I also loved the rice and the side of spinach I got. I could have eaten that rice alone, it was so savory. I also wanted to try the veggie patty and it did not disappoint. It was more blonde than the beef patty but had a good amount of filling and flavor. My friend also had the stewed chicken, which she said was really good. I'll have to come back to try that. For years, I would only come here for their Beef Patties, but that changed during my last visit. I ordered the Jerk Wings with a side of Rice & Peas. The rice was simple, but yet, good. It wasn't hard are overcooked, nor was it salty. Compared to other places, there was actually a good amount of peas, too. The wings were delicious with just enough jerk seasoning. This is my favorite Jamaican Restaurant. I have been twice in the past month and the food has been great on both visits. If you're not certain if a specific food is available, call ahead. Speaking of calling ahead, I tried calling prior to both visits but no one answered the phone. Stewed Peas and Rice are only sold on Fridays. My second visit was on a Friday so I was able to try the stewed peas with rice and beef patties. I don't eat chicken but my husband said it's very good. This is mainly a pick up to go but they have about five small tables with chairs. I will order more beef patties and steamed cabbage on my next visit. Half had a good amount of meat, the other half, barely. Got the jerk wings with fried plantains - was okay. Not spicy or flavorful as when I was in Jamaica on a trip before. I was told after I should have gotten the chicken jerk meal instead of the wings. The chicken jerk is marinated for days, where as the chicken wings are just fried and tossed in a sauce. Well darn.
