The owner of El Vecino welcomed and seated us! My youngest daughter knew i'd wanted to eat here since El Vecino had opened in our WhiteRock neighborhood. One Saturday afternoon we tried and were delightfully impressed. This fairly new local eatery with delicious margaritas and entrees is close to our home and easy to find on Buckner blvd. The creamy white queso with warm chips and catching up with my daughter was the highlight of my week. I had the traditional spicy chicken taco salad (served in an edible bowl of course). Good basic Tex Mex with no real surprises or complaints. Nothing really stood out food wise. The service was excellent despite it being very busy. Our waiter was very friendly. The decor is charming and pleasant and very well decorated with bright and unusual colors. read more

Had dinner there this evening. Was packed to capacity so I assumed the food must be good. Wrong. Had the enchiladas with rice and beans. All three enchiladas (shrimp, chicken molé, and one with red sauce that I suppose was beef), the rice, and the black beans were all below average. The molé was less than that and would rate it as poor. I've had better meals at Taco Bell. On a brighter note (and the reason for three out of five stars) the service was excellent, the borracho beans were yummy, and the chips and hot sauce (green and red) were outstanding! In the top five in Dallas! I'd give it one more try based on my latter, positive comments - but I won't be having the enchiladas. MHO read more

This is such a wonderful place for lunch or dinner, the staff is very attentive. The minute you walk in and greeted it feels like being at a good friends restaurant and you are getting special treatment because y know the owner. My boyfriend and I tried this place last night for dinner and it was amazing! The service was so fast and our server was kind and efficient. I believe his name was Victor. Anyways, chips and salsa was delicious. We ordered queso and did the Wednesday special. I am vegetarian, and one of our entrees came out smothered in beef sauce. Our server promptly took it back without any issue and fixed my order. The only reason why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars was because my skinny margarita was way too strong. Normally that's not something that I complain about, but it was borderline gasoline tasting. Regardless, we will definitely be back and I would highly recommend El Vecino to anyone. read more

My family and I just left El Vecino after waiting for almost an hour. We were finally at the top of the wait list only to have a party with 1 more person than our 5 get seated ahead of us, after we were assured the table being prepped was for us. When I asked why this party was seated at "our" table I was told it was a larger party so they got it. I have worked in restaurants and other service industries and I am very understanding when it comes to these things, but this was beyond to ridiculous. I have always enjoyed the food here and service but this will leave me questioning whether I will come back. read more

This was our first visit to El Vecino. Our waitress was fantastic and the food was good (though I really don't think there's a huge difference between El Vecino and El Fenix.) My only complaint was the sound level in the restaurant. It was DEAFENING. Please, El Vecino, invest in some baffles for the ceiling. We could barely hear each other to converse. The sound alone will prevent us from returning anytime soon. read more

I love all of the colorful prints and decorations. The servers are always very nice and attentive to their ​tables. My favorite is the El Cuenco bowl (which is a lunch special!) and the swirl frozen margarita and sangria. In my opinion, the El Cuenco bowl is better quality and a ​larger proportion than a chicken bowl at Chipotle. The presentation of the different ingredients is very pleasing with a mix of pretty colors. read more

Why is queso so hard? I make an excellent crockpot queso out of a block of velveeta and rotel, plus my secret spices (pepper and taco seasoning). Drippy, runny, spicy. But for some reason Dallas tex mex places struggle with it. El Vecino is cute and homey and the service is great. Food was decent, menu trusty and expected and the margaritas weren't too sweet. Chips were crisp, warm and refilled quickly. But the basic queso. A wobbly, pudding like consistency with a muddled flavor. It was hot, but seemed like it needed to be melted down more. Fix the queso and the stars will go up! Also, I ordered a kids beef enchilada for my daughter, expecting brown sauce and some shredded cheese on top. I got a beef enchilada covered in more queso, which she refused to eat. The tortilla soup was hearty and flavorful, probably my favorite thing. We will be back but probably won't order the queso...and what's Tex Mex without it? read more

I took my wife and 3 kids here today (Mothers' Day). The food was great but this comment is not about the food. The service was outstanding. Not overbearing or hovering, but always right on time and friendly. After seeing rave reviews on our neighborhood website neighbors and I decided to try El Vecino out. Entrees were fresh and while neighbors seemed fine with theirs mine was tasteless, exceedingly salty and doughy. Mediocre entrees can be saved by great chips and salsa but sadly not in this case. Chips bland and dense were served with a tiny dish of two salsas that tasted right out of the can. An abbreviated selection of beer, all mexican, rounded out this unimpressive visit. read more

My wife and I tried El Vecino for the first time last night and were definitely impressed. There was a bit of a wait but their system sends you a text when your table is ready, so we relaxed outside until the text message came. We tried the Poco De Todo appetizer and enjoyed each item on the platter, especially the chicken taquitos and the nachos. For the main course my wife got the Ryan combo plate and I had the fajitas - all delicious. Our server was very friendly and attentive, even though they were obviously very busy. Last night was my 4th visit to El Veceno. The first 2 were excellent. The beef fajitas were some of the best I've had and the chicken were excellent also. On 3rd visit got the brisket street tacos and they were very good. But last night was disappointing. We had the Maddie's Plate and beef enchiladas. The food was good, but not at all warm. The plates were hot, but the food was not. I'm sure if the food was warm it would have been up to expectation. Also ordered a margarita on the rocks - very bland. Will not waste money on that again. I will definitely try again as I want to support neighborhood restaurants, but hope to not be disappointed again. read more
