I have passed by this restaurant dozens of time but today I made the stop to eat there. I had a solo lunch here on a weekday after dropping the kid off for tutoring a couple of doors down from the restaurant. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The initial vibe was friendly and inviting. I was greeted pleasantly and seated.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The waiter appeared almost immediately, but because it was my first time I needed some time to take it all in. I finally settled on the lunch menu and chose lunch special #9 which was a tupy taco, cheese enchilada, rice and beans. There was a small salad. The lunch also came with iced tea, all for $13.50. It's a good deal. The free chips and salsa were excellent. The salsa was homemade and had a real kick. I was sweating but it was a good sweat. Chips were not warm but also not greasy. My food came out very fast and was hot. The menu is pretty standard Tex-Mex except they have puffed tacos (I will try next time) and something called tupy tacos, which are deep fried. To be honest, I had some misgivings about a deep fried taco but it turned out to be delicious. I am not sure what is inside, but it was good. And it was not greasy. The cheese enchilada with chili con carne was very flavorful, and the rice and beans were also excellent. Service was fast and professional. I can see why this place is so popular for lunch. I am a new fan and will return for sure to try the puff tacos. read more

Have been going to this restaurant for over 40 years starting back when it was on Inwood road. Used to be great. Now, they have no idea what they are doing. The food quality is not only bad, they can't get orders straight. No point in going when they are so many other great places in Dallas, especially for Tex-Mex! Came here on V-Day for a late lunch-early dinner, Dunch, if you will. Or maybe Drunch, since margaritas were involved. Now I'm not a Tex-Mex fan, until now. So THIS is what Tex-Mex is supposed to taste like ! My date has a combo plate and I swiped a bite of his tostada with guac. It was some of the freshest tasting guacamole I've had. It had just the right hint of lime and salt so as not to overpower the avocado. So so good ! I also tried one of his Tupy Tacos , a deep friend taco that was crispy and tasted good. For my main I had the carne asada which was seasoned so well and topped with onions and sliced poblanos. I wish it came with tortillas but every bite was excellent. So was the side of borracho beans. My date has been coming here since he was a kid and followed the restaurant from location to location. I'm a taco enthusiast, and after watching the Netflix doc about tacos, I made the pilgrimage to San Antonio for the famous puffy tacos. So naturally, when I saw "puffy tacos" on the menu here, I got excited. Unfortunately, these were not the same kind of puffy tacos--more like very thin, hollow corn tortillas rather than the glorious fried dough pillows I was expecting. And frankly, it just doesn't work. I ordered one beef and one chicken, thinking I was getting the plate with beans and rice, but nope--just two lonely tacos arrived. When I asked, the server seemed genuinely confused, like I had just asked for a side of moon rocks. Apparently, I had ordered them à la carte (whoops), so be very specific if you want the plate that includes the sides! Flavor-wise, the tacos were aggressively salty, like the kitchen was trying to season them for a lifetime supply of hydration. My husband's enchiladas were equally sodium-packed, so at least they were consistent? I left wishing I had gone for the fajita nachos instead. Overall, the experience was mid--not terrible, not great, just kind of there. If we ever return (unlikely), it'll be to try something else. On the plus side, the staff was friendly, and the margaritas looked solid, so maybe that's the move next time! Solid Tex Mex food There are still a few places you can get a plate of enchiladas just like you did anywhere in Texas in 1960,70,80. San Antonio,Austin or Dallas. Food is good, nothing crazy-Pretty mediocre Tex Mex food. This place is a safe choice knowing everything you get will be good. Their chips and salsa are pretty decent. I got the Lunch special Rudy's Special, but substituted the tupy taco for rice and beans and I have also tried the chili relleno dish. They're both pretty good. Our server was Junior and she is very nice. Very good memory and quick on her feet to refill and grab things when needed. Ambiance was casual and diverse, cozy cafe with lots of Aggie spirit. Arrived at 10:57am today and waited a couple of minutes for the restaurant to open. Doors unlocked at 11am and went in. Seated immediately and my order for a iced tea taken. Perused the menu for a few minutes then advised the server I would have the lunch #12 and a small scoop of guacamole. Food arrived 7-8 minutes later and was incredibly hot (except the guacamole), tasted great, good serving size, and also well presented. I scraped every last drop of queso, chili, lettuce, tomatoes and guacamole off the plates!! Server was polite, efficient, knowledgeable, etc. Lunch special was $12-plus tax, including iced tea. Let me just say, so far the best thing about Tupinamba is the sopapillas. ALWAYS hot and fresh! This past experience for a birthday dinner though...not so hot. We had a party of about 20 or so. I blame management for not stepping in and helping the waiter with our party. I got the feeling that he was overwhelmed from the jump and his face and body language showed. By the way, we never got the waiter's name. Not once did he greet anyone. He just stood over each of us, with his pen to paper and stared like we were supposed to read his mind, that he was ready to take our order. When it came time to pay our bills, more than half of our bills were wrong. We were very patient with him, but it was just too much and it got worse and worse. I will say, I liked my burrito bowl, it was a lot of food, ground beef was seasoned well and the queso was pretty good. Came out hot and fresh and it was a lot! Five stars plus two thumbs up! Off the bat, having lived here most of my life, I keep wondering how it is that I'd never been there before. Recommended by a friend, my wife and I tried them out. This place is great! To start, for great TexMex cuisine, you normally would expect a dive, but not here. Clean and modern, the decor is very nice as well as comfortably cool inside, despite August temperatures. My wife ordered the chicken sour cream enchiladas, and I ordered the beef. Both came with rice and beans. I could have enjoyed a whole meal with just those! My enchiladas were a touch on the spicy side and quite delicious. As for the chicken enchiladas, manna from heaven. I had a couple of bites of hers and was blown away. They were so delectable and were probably the best I've ever enjoyed. Been here twice. Top shelf margaritas are great! Food is decent. The Tupys taco filling is a mix of beans (I think) and.......Mine came out greasy looking and dried out at the same time. The lettuce, tomato & cheese that I assumed was to put in my taco. Much to my surprise, it's dressing with Italian dressing. When I asked the waiter about it, he said they normally do that. I am not a fan. Not of dressing my taco lettuce or the taco! I have tried the sour cream chicken enchiladas & the cheese. Both are decent. Same with beans & rice. Not bad at all, but not the best either. On my first visit, the waiter was very attentive. The second visit, he was at first, then stopped checking on me. After 35 min, he finally checked on me again. Both were very nice! Restaurant is clean and nice. Very pleasant atmosphere. Parking is hell unless you are here at 11 am. Disappointed with the food & drink. I had the carne asada and there was hardly any meat on my plate, all rice & veggies. Steak cut in strips and so thin, literally 3 bites of meat. The short wait time and quick service we received are always a plus in my book. The food is your basic, but yummy, Tex-Mex. No frills or fancy plating, just good food. Loved!! I had combo #1. But changed the enchiladas. Had one as a sour cream enchilada. Added chicken to their cheese taco (which is really a cheese enchilada with cheese sauce). Rice / beans were awesome. Didn't love the chips and salsa. Chips are not homemade and tasted packaged. They have a house dipping sauce (on request) which is great for the chips. Hubby had shrimp in ranchero sauce. Very good Smokey flavor. We will be back if we come to Texas again. read more

This place is always great for a TexMex fix. Food, service, and atmosphere are top-notch. I have had many things on the menu and enjoyed them all. Chips are always fresh and crisp, and the salsa is nice and spicy. On my last trip, I had a chicken taco salad and it was delicious. The previous trip was carnitas at lunch and they were outstanding. Well dang! I have been coming to Tupinamba for a few years now and this is my first time writing a review. I thought I had tried all the best food here, the 12th Man, the Pescado Bravo, Guiso, and of course the Tupi Tacos but.... I just had the West Texas Enchiladas for the first time today and they were INCREDIBLE! It took me back to my childhood when my Mom would make me her version of this amazing dish. I literally tried to clean my plate by scooping up every last bit with tortilla chips. Tupinamba or "Tupi" as my family have grown accustomed to calling it is a family friendly restaurant with great service and outstanding food. I love that they have a rich history here in Dallas and that the owners are super engaged. The staff is incredibly friendly and take the time to make you feel at home.
