Had a dinner with friends on Sunday night 4/22/18. Food was good!! They were busy but no one had to wait for a table. The problem was the service!!! It was like they were rushing you to get through!! Dropped in with the hubs and our grandson for the enchilada special last night. I had chicken with tomatillo and he had the chicken with ranchero. Both were delicious and brought out quickly. We were in and out in 30 minutes due to the fact we had a two year old with us and dinners just can't last too long. I'd like to come back when I have more time. We look forward to our visits to this exceptional family run Tex Mex restaurant located in a strip shopping area by Green Spot, Buckner and Northcliff at least once a week! Service is friendly and you get a down home neighborhood feeling, whether eating in or taking out. The corn tortilla chips and salsas are delicious. The are not doing Wednesday specials during Covid, but the prices are comparable to El Fenix and the beef and cheese enchiladas are tons better, and alway fresh. The guacamole is homemade and the serving is generous. Drinks are happy hour priced, but I can't resist paying a little extra for the frozen margarita sangria. This neighborhood restaurant has had no problem staying open and thriving through this pandemic. People come from miles around town to patronize El Vecino, just to insure that this treasure of an eating establishment would be there at the end of these crazy times. The manager is so grateful for his loyal patrons and attributes their survival solely to the loyalty of all of us. This restaurant is super clean and run most efficiently. The wait staff and servers are most attentive and accommodating. If you order take out, just pull up and an attendant is there, waiting to bring your order out to your car. If you visit El Vecino once, I guarantee that you will be back there every week for your TexMex fix. read more

Here's the deal, when all the food tastes the same, something is off. We went here because the reviews were high. So, why not try something new? Started off with The queso (tasted like melted down velvita cheese, the big gelatinous block kind) The Mr. got the brisket enchiladas and he can eat ANYTHING, he actually put his fork down and said, "the meat doesn't taste right," so of course I tried JUST the meat and it tasted like boiled beef. It was soooooo disappointing. The manager (bald guy) was constantly texting and not paying attention to the busy crowd, our waiter (another bald guy) was too busy treating his trainee like crap, poor girl. It was overall a bad place. I get that there aren't that many great Mexican restaurants in the White Rock area, but seriously, go elsewhere. read more

This place exceeded my expectations. The whole restaurant was clean and well kept. The bar was well stocked with good selections. We ordered the spinach and cheese enchilladas with black beans, wife had pinto. They were good. At first they came out a bit cold but i asked them to simply make it piping hot, which they did. The real treat there is their churros. I was thinking about that for days! Overall, this place beats out most places. The only recommendation that i would make to the chef is to follow the trend of using monterrey jack chesses instead of chedder throughout most of your dishes. Keep up the good work read more

Tried it based on the Yelp reviews. It did not disappoint. Service was prompt, thorough and friendly. I had the tacos, one ground beef and the other chicken. They were both good, but the ground beef was outstanding. The beef was seasoned perfectly and the flour tortillas were thin and flavorful. My wife had the enchiladas and she really enjoyed them. A little further drive from our house and there are other Tex-Mex restaurants closer to us, but this was is worth the extra couple of miles. read more

This place is a hidden gem in the Knox Henderson neighborhood! The staff is super friendly and the perfect place to take anyone to brunch! $5 mimosas for brunch! And the salsa is incredible. What a pleasant surprise this restaurant was! After a night at the Dallas Arboretum we decided to give this place a try. This place was great for about the first 9 months or so. For the last 3 months, it has steadily gone downhill. Our last visit was our last ever. Food has gotten to be horrible in our opinion. Last visit we ordered salmon salad and beef tacos salad. Salmon was inedible. I had to laugh when I read a previous review saying her beef taco salad had no beef. That is exactly what we experienced. I innocently sent it back telling the waitress that the kitchen forgot the beef. Nothing but refried beans and a glob of sour cream. It came back the second time with about a tablespoon of very greasy ground beef. Never again. read more

Despite being East Dallas, we are seriously challenged for good Tex Mex. Everyone's opinion will vary greatly, so I preface this review, this is my reality! I had a day off running errands, and had been dying to stop in. It was packed, but I sat at the bar for a quick glass of tea and some Quesadillas. It was so good. The salsa was extremely potent, and the Verde salsa had the BEST flavor, until the heat kicked it! *yikes* It hurts so good! We have been there a few more times, Fajitas were good, but to me the standout was the Chicken Mole enchiladas.. YUMMOH. I haven't found a good mole in years! My family and I had spent the day at the Perot museum downtown; that place is awesome so go there. My three teens, as well as my wife and I, had developed some serious hunger. We're not from the Dallas area, but frequent this area enough to know how to get around pretty well. I, for one, wanted to get out of the downtown area and went to my trusty Yelp app to find somewhere--preferably Mexican in nature--to eat. I found this place and looked at some pictures and where it's location is...well, here we are. I say that long winded story to say you should come here. The look and vibe is cool and welcoming. The service was phenomenal. We arrived at around 4:00pm so it wasn't terribly busy, but the service was so good in such a way that you know that even at peak times it would still be great. Food was legit. Extensive drink menu. The sign says "True Tex Mex" and that's what it tastes like. We'll be back. read more

First time to eat here and it is a find. Neighborhood restaurant open about 5 months in a small shopping center on Buckner Blvd. Food was good and service was great. Our new favorite Tex-Mex! The owner greeted us at the door and we had a nice conversation when we told him it was our first visit. We had no idea the owners were part of the Martinez Family (El Fenix) and the menu is full of the old family recipes as well as some very unique items. The pumpkin flan is a must try!! We need good Tex Mex on the east side of White Rock, so I had wanted to try El Vecino for some time. I think that all Texans have a particular dish or type of Tex Mex that they like, or we grew up with. There are so many styles in Dallas, that it's perfectly normal for two different Tex Mex places to survive - no, thrive - for years on the same intersection. Unfortunately, I don't think that El Vecino is mine. The service was very nice and attentive. The queso (a Tex Mex staple) was pretty good, and the four of us at the table scarfed it down. Otherwise, it was all pretty average from there. The salsa was fairly bland. The poblano cream had no detectable cream (was it corn starch thickener?). Everyone at the table kind of agreed that the food wasn't terribly memorable (3 out of four of us were Mexican nationals, so Tex Mex isn't the food of their childhoods). The iced tea was thin and too warm for the ice. The place gets great reviews, so maybe I need to try something else. I will probably give it one more try and go in a completely different direction and if it still doesn't work out I will just assume that El Vecino's style just isn't a match for mine. This new neighborhood joint shows promise. Spacious and brightly colored, with high ceilings and a sizable bar area, there is plenty of room for waiting customers, and it's loud enough for families to enjoy their dinners without worrying about being overly disruptive. Service was ok - attentive when we had it, but there were long waits to get our drink, order food, and get our check. No periodic check-ins from our server meant we couldn't easily order another drink. Nonetheless our kids' food arrived promptly, well before we got to order as adults. House margarita wasn't anything special. I prefer Micos or Tupinamba for the price. Their non-house wine is from Times Ten, which is nice. The food: chips and salsa were a delight. The green salsa is HOT! Mushroom poblano queso was good but not a standout. A little too thin and processed cheesy for the price. The black beans and cilantro lime rice were very good, and the salsa verde on my enchiladas was delicious with a mint undertone. The cheese enchiladas themselves were made with cheddar cheese inside -- I would not recommend them. Their special chili relleno was unique and tasty - a holiday explosion in our mouth - with pomegranate seeds, autumn spices and a pork filling. Their Wednesday night special, 2 enchiladas with rice and beans for $5.99 is great, but the rest of the menu is pretty pricey for what it is, IMO. Once they get more established, I think they'll do well. We will give them a try in a month or two. read more

Great food, wonderful service, happy place! We've been back four times now. Each time, the service is outstanding, and the food is great. The flour tortillas for the quesadillas are fresh made, light, thin and grilled perfectly. The enchiladas are terrific. The salsas served with chips have enough heat and are very well flavored. The guacamole has some nice kick to it. They also offer a variety of entrees that are not strictly tex mex that are very good. The big problem for our party of 11 was the poor service. We only saw our waiter a few times throughout the night and my wife's plate came out after everyone else was finished eating. I'm amazed that this restaurant is highly rated on Yelp. I had the snapper Veracruz and it was slightly over cooked- nbd - but the sauce tasted like paste from a jar. My wife had the fish tacos and they were truly bad - over cooked and not even good pieces of fish to begin with. Would have given one star based on the food but the people were nice and the margs weren't bad (although mostly a big glass of ice). Won't be returning. read more
