Tucked away from Riverside (but still visible!) is El Taquito, a hidden gem of a restaurant. Parking is ample and good. The service is excellent and prices are reasonable. I've lived in this neighborhood for 8 years and have even ran past it, but wow! It's got some cute decor and a patio but we sat inside. It's kinda small, but totally adorable. They do delivery and have specials. I have been sleeping on this one. The salsa bar has a great variety. The horchata is thick and delicious. I had the taquitos which were fresh to order. The portions are great. My partner had the tampiqueño and it was amazing--I was very satisfied with my dish, but wow! Gotta get his next time. My small complaint is that breakfast is only 10-12. Really delicious tacos!!! This place came highly recommended and for good reason. I ordered the 6 fiesta taco plate. This my favorite store of taco - small street tacos with just meat, cilantro and onion and hot sauce. Tripas meat was spectacular: Crispy, chewy, fatty and perfection! Such an amazing spot! The atmosphere here is wonderfully cozy and welcoming, the outside seating has such a great vibe. And that's not even the best part! The food is definitely one of the best tacos I've had in austin and the drinks are large and delicious!it came out so fast and the service was amazing. The atmosphere was quaint, had a salsa bar, a decent amount of seating and their own parking lot (woo!) We shared the queso fundido with chorizo, tostadas, 6 taquito special (bistec) & a pastor taco The pastor taco stood out the most and will be something I order again. As for the bistec, it was tender and flavorful just like the pastor. The tostada was basically a party on a chip and even with everything on it it stayed crispy and didn't break through. The carne guisada taco on flour + the queso (drizzle it over the taco after you squeeze the lime on it) is so fucking good that I literally will drive across town sometimes to snag one. Chase it down with a Mexican coke and ya that's one of my favorite meals in atx. I get it a couple times a week from this or the Oltorf/1st street location. The staff is always nice and shakes off my poor ability to pronounce my order (my Spanish is like Peggy Hill lololol) but ya I also like to put the salsa roja on it. All around great taco spot hidden in Riverside. I came with 3 friends on a Saturday afternoon. There were only a few people in the restaurant. Lots of seating inside, patio seating outside and a toppings bar to the side! My husband and I ordered two special tacos (Al pastor and Barbacoa) and two tacos (chicken and carnitas). Service was super quick and we got our tacos in about 5 min. One thing to note, the special tacos come with 6 mini tacos! Perfect for one person. I LOVED the Al Pastor and Barbacoa tacos. Tortilla was super fresh and the meat was cooked well. The chicken taco was way to watery which made the tortillas soggy. Overall, highly recommend adding this to your taco list! read more

It is one of the best authentic Mexican street tacos. I came in with a big group, and we tried all the tacos that were on the menu, and they were all delicious. My favorite one was the Chorizo, it was really good. The hot sauce bar looked unattended until we asked them to refill, and they were nice about it to do so. Campechana - this one had me from the jump...3 meats! Bistek,Carnitas and AL Pastor sheeeeesh Bistek Los Famosos - Steak...I would call it Asada Carnitas - Awesome pork! How did it taste? Ummm damn good! I think that's a category. By far the Campechana was my favorite...the flavors were all on point and there's equal amounts of meat...complimented with the right portion of onions and cilantro!...keeping it classic is the way to my heart! The carnitas wooooo.. yessuh! Tasted fresh...they do make them to order...meaning it's not coming out of a warmer in to the tortilla. The Bistek was flavorful...only knock I had was it felt like they didn't cut the meat against the grain...big deal...chew a lil more it's still good Did I mention the corn tortillas were FRESH MADE! Final points El Taquito sits at the top of my list currently and it's because the food is super authentic ...the price of approximately $3.50 per taco and the amount of protein in the taco makes this a no Brainer! Came here with the recommendation of a friend who said that these were the best tacos he's had and that my vegan/vegetarian friends should break their diet and eat meat because the tacos were that good. I thought I ordered their 3 specialty tacos but then the cashier told me to pick 2 meats. I ended up with a plate of 6 mini street tacos ($12ish) which I couldn't complain about. The tacos were filled with juicy and tender meat. They have a salsa bar with a bunch of different salsas to try. I also split nachos ($15ish) with a group of people. They don't give many chips but you can ask for more chips and they'll give you regular tortilla chips for free. Overall, not a bad stop for late night tacos. You can tell that they're a busy shop because there was a constant flow of people all night past 10pm on a Saturday. read more

This place offers some good food. Its of course a Mexican spot, it has limited seating inside but they also have a nice covered patio seating as well. They have a couple of kiosks to order from along with them taking your order as well. They offer alcoholic drinks but that is one item you can't order from the kiosk. They have their own parking and you wont see the place right off of riverside. Its old riverside which is behind it & slightly hidden. They offer plates, appetizers, tacos & agua frescas to which I had the Sandia (watermelon) one & it was so good. I had the barbacoa tacos with avocado and they were delicious but just wish they were a little bigger. I would recommend this spot especially if you like freshly made agua frescas. This review is strictly for the food because I had my husband pick up and never went inside. If you're missing good pastor like we were, look no further. The nachos with Al pastor were the creamy goodness I remember from nights in CA. Seemed to have a couple types of cheese, well seasoned beans, and thick and crunchy freshly made tortilla chips. The tostadas we got on the side proved the pastor was delicious on its own. Highly recommend this place for quick and delicious Mexican food. Finally found a great pastor place, can't speak for the entire menu, but to me excellent pastor already makes this place a must! The place has a decent parking lot, not huge though, so it may get hard at busy times. Finally, here is a tip if you like your tacos with plenty of cheese, order the queso fundido with the meat of your choice and a taco on the side, then mix it all up! El Taquito (Feb. 25, 2023) Came here for a late lunch around 2 p.m. for touring Austin for a bit. Decide on this place because of some very good reviews as well as my being able to get some extra miles from a dining plan. No regrets whatsoever. The restaurant is not easily spotted if you are traveling on the main road as it is on a side road with a little incline. There is no clear signage easily visible. I was using public transportation to get to this place, so I discovered the place after a little effort. The order taker at the counter was new and spoke little to no English. Somehow the food order was placed, and it was their special consisting of 6 taquitos. Expecting the dish to be rolled up and fried, was surprised to see 6 small tacos on the plate instead. Did some further research and found out the word "taquito" literally means "small tacos". It was none-the-less a pleasant surprise when I bit into them and experiencing some very good tasting grub. The huge plus is the salsa bar, consisting of various different types of salsas ranging from mild to a very impressive spicy ones. You've never lived till you experience the heat from the spiciest offering - a literal taste of heavenly hell. Adding squeezed lime juice on the heat only makes the item even tastier. The restaurant environment is older, but serves a very comfortable environment. Overall, a very impressive meal, and will not hesitate to return if I travel to Austin again. We have always had great service and quality of food is fantastic here. Every item is made to order and you will have to pay per taco (rather than have an option to order 5 mini tacos) as the menu has been pared down a bit since the pandemic began. There are now limitations on the aguas fresas offered so be sure to ask the cashier what they have for the day. Soft drinks are offered in a can now so again ask what they have before you order. There is very limited seating inside as a safety precaution but I did see an area, off past the register, where you can eat outside. I saw a couple of tables and chairs outside as well as people enjoying their meal out there as well. You can also purchase meat by the pound if you want to whip something up at home for you and your family as this might be the way I end up doing our next order from El Taquito as it can be a little busy during dinner and weekend times. read more

Torta was off the hook, I have tried at least half a dozen other tortas (been on a kick lately) and they haven't come remotely close the the one I had here. The nachos and quesadilla were delicious as well. Can't speak for the test of the menu (yet). Heard their tacos are wonderful and I look forward to trying them. I wasn't able to locate the price until I was paying for my food, which I didn't care for, but this has been my experience at quite a few different establishments now so I can't dock these guys for doing the same. So after another customer came in to translate and with some persuasion, our money was refunded. If I were to visit Texas again, it would not be to this place. The food wasn't bad. The meat on the tacos was unseasoned. But add enough salsas and you have no shortage of flavor. Last time I was in a tacos place that also serves multiple flavors of giant beer-ritas like this, was at Fuzzy's in Tempe, AZ. And yes, this place is WAY better cause their tacos are super tasty to pair with so many yummy flavors of frozen dranks and still not gonna break the bank. The meats were well-seasoned n cooked to perfection. We love the salsa verde n the hot salsa since they took those already delish tacos onto the next spicy level. I am obsessed with their mini taco deal! 6 mini tacos with your choice of meat with onion cilantro and cheese only 6.50 (ish) I've tried the bistek, the barbacoa, beef fajita, and al pastor. My favorite is the beef fajita, it's got great flavor! I always add avocado to them for $1. The green salsa is the best! They've got a great salsa bar with pico, jalapeños, Chile cucumbers, and much more. The employees are super friendly even though there's a language barrier. They try! I've had their nachos and although they were tasty I didn't like the way the toppings were thrown on the tip of the chip rather than evenly distributed on the chips. I can't say enough of how much I enjoy going to visit this little restaurant in Austin when I visit! I absolutely love this spot. It is a little hidden but I swear they have the best Frijoles a la charra I've ever had in my life! Be ready for a long wait though, you'll definitely wait in line. I took my best friend there after painting the town red one night and a newly integrated Austinite, and he didn't even know about it yet and they both absolutely loved it. Of course we ordered tacos as well but there wasn't a plate empty on our table before I could get to take pictures. I at least managed to get a photo of their famous Frijoles Vaqueros Soup it comes with some pork rinds cracklins that are sooo good, and the waiting area. Open late! This place is a cool, authentic Mexican restaurant. We came in late at night for tacos. They serve up 5 mini tacos al trompo, which means they've got a vertical spit like a gyro thingy, topped with pineapple, so the pineapple juice drips down the side of the meat. For a few bucks, we got a full plate of tacos, served up on adorable little corn tortillas. They have a salsa bar with a large variety of options to pick from- a spicy red, a hot green, a roasted salsa- each was delicious! You gotta pay extra for the chips. The staff was bilingual, and cheerfully answered all my questions about the trompo- they were proud to show it off! The service was fast and friendly. Parking was a breeze, with a dedicated lot. Decided on a casual dinner here because of the reviews. Overall disappointed and won't be back. First, all of the menu items are more expensive than what they have printed at the counter and online. I ordered the meat plate with al pastor and it came with rice and beans. The meat was kind of like beef jerky and they gave me refried beans instead of charro as I had ordered. The al pastor taquitos come with avocado but the meat plate doesn't which seems off. They left off the pineapple on the al pastor plate and taquitos we also ordered. Misc: it was cooler outside than inside... it's currently August and 97 degrees at 8pm. The music playing on the speaker was good. I saw meat in plastic bags in the standing cooler in the kitchen..
