We do a carryout about twice a month, from the West Side (Oneida St) location. Several times a year (usually in winter when we want to be someplace that FEELS sunny!) we dine in, and have always found the service to be prompt and friendly. They're always very patient with me when I attempt to speak Spanish. ;-) We've eaten from every part of the menu, from specials to tamales, and never EVER had a bad experience! I think all ethnic restaurants struggle to bridge the gap between authentic home cooking, and catering to local expectations of what that ethnic food "should taste like." Consequently, I don't judge any of them based upon "the real food" I'm used to eating in Mexico or New Mexico or Arizona. Personally, I really like the food at El Sarape, even though it might sometimes be different from what I've gotten elsewhere (which I have also enjoyed.) Taste really is subjective, isn't it? Oh...and the West Side/Oneida street location is also in a strip mall, but there's plenty of parking. At least, we've never had a problem. The East Side location is a bit tighter. read more

I feel like the Wicked Witch for downgrading.... We'd been going pretty consistently for a while now, whenever I had a craving for carne asada fries. Sadly, we really don't go anymore, and when we do, we remember that we've said we aren't going to go anymore. The fries are ALWAYS undercooked (barely light brown when I ask for well done) and the overall food quality seems to have dropped a bit. Chips and salsa are still tasty. Service is still polite enough, but no real service. Still smells strongly of sanitizer. Sometimes, it burns the nose and it really gets in the way of enjoying a meal, but it's still better than a nasty funk. read more

I experienced better when they were in the smaller store on Oneida. Just tried the new location. I have to say it was terrible. The service was great, but the chips were thick and had an overcooked oil flavor. I ordered a combo of Chili Rellenos, Burrito, Enchilada. The Chili Rellenos was like it was a frozen institutional product; the Burrito I ordered was shredded beef and was covered in white cheese sauce (yuck combination), and the Enchilada had the sauce baked onto it like it was in the salamander too long. I tried this place for the first time, and I'm going to have to go back to try all the other great vegetarian options on the menu. I ordered the Chiles Rellenos de Queso, and received two HUGE stuffed chiles. The salsa and chips are fresh and amazing. I couldn't get enough of the salsa, it has this super garlic and cilantro flavor. My order was one of the more expensive options on the menu, and was still under $11. The portions were huge, and I will be enjoying the rest for lunch later. The staff is very friendly, and the kitchen seemed willing to make alterations to menu items. This might be my new favorite mexican place, and I'm only keeping it at 4/5 stars until I can verify that everything else is as awesome as I had today. read more

Most consistent Mexican authentic food I have found in Green Bay! Love their salsa, pork tacos, burritos, fajitas, everything I have had I have enjoyed. Very reasonably priced and atmosphere neither great nor bad, right in the middle!! Great food! I love the chicken mole and pork tacos. The salsa is nice and spicy- not that mild out of the jar garbage. The service is friendly and fast as long as the place isn't too busy. You walk into a pretty large restaurant that is sometimes pretty crowded or has anyone in it. The first time I was here our waiter was not very good. It took awhile for us to get water and my friend and I were looking around wondering what was going on. We decided to order our food right away because we were worried this would be our only chance. The food came out pretty quickly which was nice. It was all pretty overdone. I got a cheese quesadilla which is pretty hard to mess up but the cheese wasn't fully melted inside. The beans and rice were fine. My friend got the chicken enchiladas and said they were overdone but pretty good. The waiter gave us our food and we didn't see him again until he gave us our bill. We only had one glass of water with our meal so it was hard to finish it without the waiter coming over and offering us more to drink. I wouldn't count on getting great service here, unless you come for dinner, when there is a big rush. It seems as though I get better service here when things are crazy and all the staff is running around serving tables. Overall it's a cheap option and they serve ok food. read more

This place is absolutely amazing. Delicious chips and salsa, and the best burritos in the business. I had the Norteno burrito, legitimately the best burrito I've ever eaten. My brother-in-law wanted to do lunch here and I was a little hesitant because it's in a strip mall and seemed a little shady...not the case at all. I like their location on Oneida St. better because it appears cleaner - something I am always worried about when walking into restaurants. Their salsa is the best in town. Unfortunately, if get your food to go, they never give you enough salsa and if you want extra, they give a small "sample" size for a big price.
