I LOVED the vibe of this unassuming coffee shop that has a nice protected outdoor space with furniture, greenery, and festoon lighting. The indoor space was where industrial meets chic. I loved this egg salad on sourdough and the french toast latte that my mom got was spot on. Of course I had to get french toast cold foam on my cold brew. We've found ourselves in this particular moment, him 5 years sober, me 26 and often confusing experiences of pain and pleasures on the thin ice of addiction. Today we are in wisconsin, visiting family, having coffee to stay at a cafe my grandma recommended we go to. She has my tiny brother, so it's just my dad and I, how things were for 16 years. We work as a team to find free parking. We love doing team things to save a dollar, a minute, or find a loophole. We decide on our coffees, and when the barista asks if we'll have them to stay my dad says yes, which brings a smile to my mind. He suggests we share this berry oat bar thing. One thing I find so charming about his sobriety is his need for sweets. It's somewhere in trainspotting 2 that mark tells spud "you'll always be an addict. You just have to find something else to get addicted to." I think of this when i see him with a big fat bowl of ice cream after dinner and a new exciting hobby every other month. I think of this when I consider what my life might be like if I decide to admit some things to myself sooner than later. But right now it's me and my father, having coffee to stay in cute mugs, no rushing, no changing things, just farting around in a midwest summer.

When I first arrived, I approached who I thought was the host, but she didn't look up or acknowledge me until I said hello. Since it was my first time there and the brewery was crowded with people for the event, I wasn't sure where to go. She directed me to the check-in table after I said I was there for the event. It was held in their upstairs loft area. The space upstairs was really nice, and overall I enjoyed the event. Afterward, I ordered a beer and some food downstairs at the bar. When I mentioned that I was upstairs, the bartender told me there was no server upstairs and that they would have to find me. I completely understand needing me to stay downstairs, but the way it was communicated came across as unnecessarily rude and like I was inconveniencing him. A simple, "We don't have a server upstairs, so could you please stay down here so we can bring you your food?" would have been much more pleasant. Overall, the food was tasty and the beer great (I had the pesto fries and the Garten Party IPA), the event fun, but the interactions with the staff made the experience less welcoming than it could have been. I'd love to come back to check out their outside patio with live music.

I ordered toast, crispy potatoes, a side of bacon. My daughter ordered eggs Benedict . My order came and the waitress had forgot to put in the potatoes . This was after confirming the order twice. When the potatoes came it was a small portion swimming in some kind of spicy seasoned oil. For $8 I would have expected a bit more portion wise. The bacon was fine. Nothing remarkable, and $4 for two slices. The toast and jam was ok. The toast bordered on burnt and was served without butter. The jam was more like a strained strawberry puree. The toast was tasty, except for the slightly burnt top. The eggs Benedict was $22. For that price they should be stellar! The English muffin had burnt bits, the hollandaise was ok, nothing special , the ham was tasty , but the egg was poached way past the point you would want or expect with eggs Benedict . There was a side of thinly sliced zucchini and squash that was quite tasty . Again, terrific bread- but we will skip the dine in options.
