I honestly don't know what happened to this place...a new chef? New ownership? I went here with my dad last night and what a 180degree change. It had been maybe 4 months since we'd been here but it was an entirely different establishment. They had to have changed the salsa recipe, it takes like ketchup with chunks of tomato and onion added into it and it is so sweet, no spice what so ever. The chips were cold when they were brought to the table. The margarita my dad ordered (a small) was actually tiny, and tasted like it had no alcohol. The price was unbelievable, almost double what we pay at other places and no BOGO offer. The food was just....bland. I felt like I was chewing, but there was no flavor. I asked for their "burrito" sauce on the side of my chile rellenos and thank god I did it was worse than the salsa (sweet and runny but random chunks of vegetables throughout). The rice was dried out, the refried beans were cakey and the tortillas tasted store bought. The guacomole was old since the avocado was a blackish green. I left a good chunk of my food on the plate. Our waitress was MIA for most of the experience. From the time we were seated to the time we had our order taken almost 15 minutes had passed and they only had 3 other tables at the restaurant. They also increased their prices on a lot of items, but the quality sure has gone downhill. Sadly I don't think we'll be back to this establishment to see if this was a one time fluke, too many other tex-mex places in the area to go back and waste your hard earned money on something mediocre. I have been eating here forever and I've always loved it. My family started going here 20 years ago, which definitely says something. The food comes out quickly- usually under 10 minutes for everything and they always get my order right when I make special requests. I think the food is reasonably priced. The staff is friendly and quick to check on you or refill your drink. I love their shredded beef, camarones a la diabla and the steak azteca. Their layout is more spread out so you don't feel squished against the next table even when the place is packed or when you have kids with you. Parking can be a bit crazy if you go at dinner time or on mother's day, but there's always the option to park on the street. read more

Alright, stopped in for a birthday party with the family. First, the wait staff is awesome and attentive. They fulfilled all requests and quickly. I thought the warm up salsa and chips were solid. I ordered the steak Azteca which I would think is other places bistec ranchera. It came with rice and beans. I give it a 3/5 because it isn't the best I've had or the worst. It is close. Service is fast. Staff friendly. I would have liked a bit more spicy and didn't specify that. The staff sang Happy birthday to my niece and that was a nice touch. read more

This is my grandparents favorite place. My partner had the taco salad deluxe and loved it. I had the chicken fajitas which were very good. The service here is always excellent. As a Texan, I'm a little suspicious (in a horrible, snobby, "I-hate-myself-for-feeling-this" way) when my boyfriend's Green Bay family tells me this is awesome Mexican food that I have to try. I will never doubt their taste again. Seriously delicious food -- everyone's looked fabulous, and the prices were awesome for the portion size and quality of food. Authentic? Yes. ((ish)) Quick? Yes. Friendly? Yes. Huge portions? Yes. Tasty? Meh. It takes quite a bit to impress me when it comes to Mexican food. Call me picky, call me high maintenance, call me whatever you want. Mexican food to me should not be doused in cheese and sour cream and swimming in a vat of oil. Nor should it even remotely resemble something purchased from Taco Bell. Although El Azteca was none of those things, it was just straight-up mediocre. My socks were knocked off, but the food definitely wasn't anything close to what the local TB serves up ((thank goodness)). I opted for the 3 taco chicken dinner with rice and beans. I found the shredded chicken to be some of the most tender, moist, and delicious chicken I've encountered in a taco. That ish was muy bueno. However, my rice and beans were overcooked and super dry. Boo...rice and beans are my favorite part of a Mexican dinner. Service was fast and friendly. Our waiter was attentive and didn't seem to be annoyed by my constant requests for a water refill. And with my plethora of requests for dish add-ins and other ingredients on the side, my dish came out exactly how I had asked it to be prepared. Overall, El Azteca is definitely not the best Mexican food I've had, but the portions and prices are right, the service is good, and they make some pretty darn good chicken tacos. read more

Uncertain what has occurred here. Owners that are sweethearts are the same, cooks are mostly the same, but the food is not. Bring back the University Ave. and pre-remodeling flavor. Please also bring back the customer service as Juan simply throws your food at you and is ignorant to the point of my family not coming back. He has some anger issues, and he doesn't hide them. The food would warrant four stars but the service barely warrants two. I wish I could say who our server was but they just put an inital on the written check. Our server, who I will refer to by her initial of J, couldn't have been less enthused about providing us a decent experience. It was almost as if she was pissed off at us from the get go and my sister and I were both mystified. I ordered the combination plate #2, a taco and two enchiladas. All were good, especially the enchiladas. They have GREAT guacamole, too. After our food was delivered, we never saw our waitress again. Well, I mean, we SAW her but she never gave us a second glance, not even to check and be sure our meals were as expected and there were no problems - generally the LEAST one might expect from a server anywhere... So I spent most of my meal without anything to drink as I had finished my iced tea AND my water and wasn't going to wait while my food got cold. When she finally DID glance over (I was nearly finished with my food), she asked (from across the room) "more iced tea?" to which I responded, "yes and water too please?" She came back and set the glass of tea down loudly and refilled my water glass with such force that my sister and I both thought I was in for a bath. I said "thank you" and "J" walked away without a word. Do managers realize how something like this can ruin a nice meal? Why should any diner feel like their server is not just unhappy, but pissed off?!? A short while later I was done eating and she came over and asked, "are you done?" and grabbed my plate from the table with such vehemence my sister thought she was going to heave it over her shoulder! At this point we had to laugh but were really taken aback. At no point did she even ask how our food was or anything either. We had thought we might order dessert (they have fantastic sopapillas) but she never offered and just came back with our check, again not uttering a word or even making eye contact. Really unsettling. I hate to admit that we did not even leave a tip...the food was good and that's what we paid for but a tip is a way to show appreciation for service and neither of us appreciated being treated like we were scum of the earth. We were there July 31 around 7-7:30 if anybody of consequence (read: manager or owner) should happen to read this ...and though the food was good, we certainly won't be back anytime soon, if at all. read more

El Azteca is my FAVORITE Mexican restaurant in Green Bay. I lived in Green Bay for a number of years and used to come here quite often. Now, I spend my entire year thinking about it until my yearly visit rounds and I can indulge again. The tamales are really why I come here. Perfect flavor, fat content and nice and moist. I love them. Any dish I have ever had here has been enjoyable and the Margaritas are also very nice. I like to get two Mexican style steak tacos and two tamales. Oh man and their beans have a nice smokey flavor to them. I know everyone geeks about El Sarape, but I think the flavor and the authenticity is here, though El Sarapes' salsa is a bit better in my opinion. Go to El Azteca and get a tamale and I think you will agree. Sometimes the service is not as friendly as I hope for, but it it always efficient. read more

Each time I come to Green Bay I stop and eat at this location. The food, staff, and atmosphere is good. I don't have any complaints. I tried the Carne Asada de tampiquena and it was excellent, just how I expect and wanted it to be cooked. My wife had a combination plate and wasn't happy with the verde sauce, but overall was very good. Margarita was good and the coke product from Mexico was good as well. I ended up with a steak burrito with just steak (not a lot of flavor), some rice and beans but nothing else. It was really plain and there was "nothing" else in it. Best Mexican between the UP and Milwaukee as far as I know. In fact better than anything in the UP that I have found. Although I do like El Patron in Escanaba, and also very good. A few days ago a friend suggested I go back, so I tried the steak enchiladas which were without a doubt some of the best enchiladas I have ever had.
