I recently visited El Pico de Oro for lunch on a Friday and they did not disappoint. They are located in the Lynnhaven mall area of Virginia beach. The restaurant was clean, well-lit, and had plenty of available seating. I ordered the quarter chicken with Peruvian fried rice and sweet plantains. Everything was exceptional; the rice and plantains were cooked perfectly, and while I did think the chicken was slightly salty, it was still very tasty. I also enjoyed the green sauce provided, though the food was flavorful enough on its own. My only minor suggestion is for the staff to ask guests whether they prefer white or dark meat when ordering. Aside from that, the meal was excellent. If you are looking for authentic, great-tasting Peruvian chicken, I highly recommend stopping by El Pico de Oro. read more

Stopped by El Pico de Oro while in the area and this place is truly a hidden gem. As I walked in, the place was really clean and they were Spanish playing music which was really nice! I wasn't sure what to order but I figured the 1/4 Chicken Combo would be plenty, especially since it came with two sides. I decided to dine in since I wanted the food to be fresh and hot and OMG, the chicken was flavored to perfection. The seasoning was amazing and it was cooked perfectly! The combo also comes with two sauces, which aided in the flavor of the chicken. I decided on the fried rice and plantains as my sides and they were also a 10/10! The rice was savory and the plantains were sweet and delicious! Needless to say, there was no food left in that container when I was done lol. Give me alllll the food here ! Found this place recently and so so glad I did! They had a steady stream of people coming in for pick up orders. They have a quarter chicken lunch special on weekdays. My husband got the half chicken with fries and fried rice... THE CHICKEN!!!!! My mouth is drooling just thinking of that chicken. So well seasoned and moist! I got the lomo Saltado with white rice and fries. The white rice was seasoned well and the gravy was delicious- the steak was a little tough. Ohhh my goodness. I wasn't ready for the flavor. This place is one of those unassuming hole-in-the-walls that every "real" local should know about. The dining area is simple, the staff is authentic, and the food comes in styrofoam with plastic forks. And the food is AMAZING. Really you don't need to know anything else. But to expound anyway- the chicken is incredibly flavorful and juicy and tender. This has to be a very old recipe. The yucca fries were cooked perfectly and so unique. And I loved trying the way they did plantains, each country is so different with them and I felt like the Peruvian way was really showcased here. The cashier (/owner I assume?) was super helpful and authentic, and gave great tips for what to order. If heaven was a dish! I've been so addicted to CM Chicken that I didn't stop to notice it's neighbor. I wanted chicken and rice and have been craving it for a while. I merely searched up "chicken" on Grubhub and El Pico popped up. I didn't realize until later that it was the location next to CM Chicken. I ordered the 1/4 chicken combo with fried rice and plantains. The flavor of the chicken and the fact that you could eat the skin was amazing. Being from northern VA, there are tons of Peruvian chicken restaurants there so I've had my fair share of Peruvian chicken. I always wanted a Peruvian chicken spot close by to fill my cravings and then I found this spot in va beach and close to home. I walked in and stared at the huge menu looking to see what to order. I decided to go with the whole chicken and it came with 2 sides and 2 sauces. So I got the fried rice, fries yuca and added the fried plantains. I also added more sauces. All that food and my total came out to be about $25! Wow great price and all that food to feed a family of 4. I waited inside for my order to be completed and it didn't take long at all. Got to the car and I could smell all the yummy goodness coming from the bag. When we got home we started to dig in. The chicken was delicious and juicy not dry at all. The fried yuca and the fried plantains we're done perfectly too. The fried rice was ok and the sauces were okay as well. I was sooo looking forward to trying this place, I love love peruvian chicken, but sadly never even got to place my order. Walked in with no one in the place, guy comes up to take my order, and as I'm asking questions about the menu he answers the phone for a takeout order... which is fine, but the polite (and appropriate) thing to do at this point would be to check if I'm ready to place my order and put the call on hold if I am. Instead he proceeds to take a very large takeout order... during which I finally leave to go use the bathroom... then I return and he's still on the phone. 15 minutes I'm waiting and he doesn't even look up to apologize. Whatever. As a note, the soap dispenser was empty (and looked to have been that way for a while) in the one bathroom - so that wasn't overly promising either. Found the BEST Peruvian chicken in the area. Coming from NOVA, it was a challenge to find an excellent Peruvian chicken. The owner and family are lovely. Unfortunately, They sell out of chicken fast, so go early. Taste: Perfection Sauce: Yellow sauce has a different flavor than I'm used to. I mix with a little more mayo and add a couple of drops of the yellow sauce to it. They're closed on Sunday and Wednesday and close at 6 PM on all other days. read more

No frills just truly delicious food. I ordered this place on a whim from Postmates after reading a few rave reviews about this spot. Their menu is limited, so if you aren't in the mood for a "basic" although delicious meal... you might not want to go to El Pico de Oro for this meal. I am super indecisive so I love when businesses only put the items on their menu that they do well and giving me less room for indecision. We got the Family Special #1- one whole chicken, 2 large sides and 3 sauces. The chicken was absolutely delicious! The skin was flavorful and the meat was juicy. I was already prepared to rave about the chicken, but then I remembered it comes with sauces! I went back to the bag and that was a game changer. It took already fantastic chicken and wowed me with the extra flavor. It didn't overpower the flavors from the chicken, instead complimented them. My favorite was the green sauce (cilantro). I have no clue what the yellow sauce was. I recognized the flavor, but couldn't place it. It was good though! Neither sauce was spicy- loved them both. I recommend getting extra (or I really wish they would give more than two small ramekins of sauce with a whole chicken.) We did not get three sauces as the menu indicated, this could have been a postmates thing. The fried rice was fantastic. Bits of egg in it too- yum! My sweet plantains were burnt to the point they were almost inedible. I know sometimes the dark color is the caramelization, nah these were burnt with a bitter taste that kept me from enjoying them. The styrofoam to-go container for them was also melted which would have made me nervous about eating them anyways. I cut a few in half and ate the inside. They were delicious. I'll order them again and hope I get a better batch. For $2 I also added a 2L of Inca Kola to my order. It was good. Not something I would get again, but I'm not really a soda drinker anyways. I just wanted the new experience. It was kind of like bubblegum flavored? Maybe bubblegum and pineapple. It was a sweet dessert and I'm glad I tried it. Back to the positive... I also got the stuffed potatoes. This is my new favorite food. I can see myself eating these for lunch dinner... and even breakfast too. The egg inside was a new flavor combination and I loved it. I forgot to snap my pic before starting to eat bc the smell was intoxicating. It comes with two sauces a yellow and a green. The yellow was not for me but the green was so good- dk what it was but it had a hint of lime and the yuca fries were definitely complimented by dipping them in there. The chicken is the draw of course and it was so worth it, it's flavorful and moist and so good. Weeks ago, my girlfriend and I traveled to Charcoal Chicken to check out Peruvian chicken which was featured in the Virginian Pilot. Also featured was this local spot, which opened up around the same time as Charcoal Chicken. It's an extended weekend for both of us (we have Presidents Day off), so why not travel to Virginia Beach to try this out? Once we walked in, we placed our orders up front before finding a table. She ordered 1/4 chicken w/Yucca fries and plantains. I ordered 1/2 chicken (both white meat) w/Yucca fries and Peruvian fried rice. About 15 minutes later, both our dishes came out. They looked fine, but the first glance of my meal caught my eye: instead of Yucca fries, I had French fries. The guy behind the counter (one of the owners I believe) noticed right away and got my order straight within minutes. Mistakes happen so I let it slide. Anyway, here's a breakdown of each of our meals: -My girlfriend said the chicken she ate here was better than that of Charcoal chicken. The Yucca fries were better (forgot why) and the green sauce was better, but not the yellow sauce. Plantains were delicious. So it hit above her expectations. And this was her Valentines Day meal so a win in her favor :) -My meal came with mixed results unfortunately. The chicken was really good (some spots were kind of dry but I rarely eat rotisserie chicken) and the Yucca fries were good. However, the fried rice I had here wasn't the best I've ever eaten. It came out steaming and hot, but parts of it were crunchy. Even though it had spice, I expected to see some chicken pieces incorporated like that of Charcoal Chicken, which made it standout for me. Unfortunately, not the case here. As far as the condiments go, the green sauce was really good and actually had a mild spice, but the yellow sauce had sort of a strong taste. Well, there you have it. Overall, I would rate our visit a 3.5 out of 5 stars.....rounded out to 4. The customer service was good and they always had a smile on their face, which was a plus in my book. Let me start by complimenting the owners. The wife for cooking the best rotisserie chicken I ever had and the husband for the amazing customer service at the counter. Not many places treat you the way he treated us during our first visit. I was super impressed, keep up the great work. THE CHICKEN, WOW! I had never had Peruvian chicken until I moved to VA and man have I been missing out. This chicken is so flavorful and juicy and it comes right off the bone. I always get the Peruvian fried rice which is also incredible. The green sauce though? That I could literally drink on its own because it's soo good. I put the green sauce on everything. My chicken, my fries, my fried rice. It's just that good. The owners Karen and Kyle are super friendly and always let me pay for my orders over the phone so I can just run in after work and grab it. By the way, the fries are perfect. They're perfectly crunchy and salty. This place will become a staple for you as it has for my family! A few tables scattered around, but it's mainly a takeout place. They have some great options for foods and the prices are very affordable, especially since the portions are huge! The highlight of this place is the chicken! It is rotisserie style Peruvian chicken; very authentic. The chicken was super flavorful and well seasoned. It was so juicy and cooked well throughout. Make sure to use the two sauces provided to further enhance the flavor of the chicken. I ordered a 1/4 chicken with a side of rice and beans. It was all delicious! The Maduros is sweet, not greasy or laden with syrup. The Arroz Chaufa is a good combination of rice and veggies. You offered two types of sauce - the yellow variety looks like a mustard/Mayo blend unfortunately it was bland. The green variety is herbal with a distinct but not overpowering sauce of cilantro. The sauces are not spicy so you may want to order some on the side if that is your cup of tea. A nice dish to order and take home to eat with family. Inconspicuous exterior and very modest interior may trick you but if you look for the details you may notice interesting facts. I noticed that two young sailors (in the Navy uniform and with no officer insignia) serving on the ship in Norfolk (hat indicated a ship) drove 15 miles to read a Latino newspaper, drink Inca Cola and get the daily special. My $7 lunch consisted of succulent chicken with fried rice, salad, soda and sauces meet my expectations in terms of textures, spiciness and taste. Even if my meal was just OK I would have to surrender to super kind staff with amazing smiles that make you feel like at home.
