I needed to grab dinner for my family and decided to try the Charcoal Chicken after it was recommended to me. I ordered the whole chicken special, which came with three sides. I decided to go with two sides of rice and a side of string beans. I also added a chicken quesadilla. The meal included a drink, so I grabbed a soda as well. There was more than enough food for my family of five -- we even had seconds! I love Horchata, Charcoal chicken make Horchata. Yucca frites, fresh cooked. I eat half before I get home. Black beans are well seasoned. Charcoal chicken is nicely marinated. Always a friendly greeting when you enter by staff and the open Charcoal rotisserie in front of your face. I love the authentic drinks and recipes there's guys replicate. Sophia and I traveled here over the weekend for lunch. Years ago, we dined at their flagship location in Virginia Beach where the food was really good. That was the plan until I remembered they opened up a second spot here over 2 years ago. Would the long trek result in good vibes? When we walked in, every table was taken. This one is smaller to the Virginia Beach local and is more designed for takeout. But luckily, it was a team of people eating lunch so they were all finishing up. And the staff made sure to clean each table. Huge plus in my book. Just like in Va Beach, you have to go to the counter to order. You actually get a very good view of rotisserie chicken being cooked. Now that would make anybody hungry. I chose the 1/2 chicken meal with two sides (Yucca fries and french fries) with white meat added for an extra charge. This meal was delicious. The chicken was cooked through and through not skimping on the seasoning. And both sides were plenty. They also gave out sauces which you could dip either the chicken or side in. As you guessed, I got full after eating one piece and saved the rest for dinner still tasting the same. Delicious Peruvian chicken....can't go wrong at all. This meal truly delivered for yours truly. Ive tried this place twice hoping that the first not so great order was a fluke and that they would redeem themselves with a juicy chicken half for the second order. Unfortunately that didn't happen. The one pretty good thing they had was the lamb gyro. Please tell me how that makes any sense for a Peruvian restaurant. The chicken was dry and salty. I'm a fan of dark meat because it's more moist by default. Again, not the case here. Dry dark meat and super salty. Beef stew was salty as well and the beef was not super tender as you'd expect in a stew. Also ordered chicken strips, that were....guess what....overcooked. How do I know? Generous portions and delicious food! My daughter and I split the 1/2 chicken along with plantains and beans with rice for $15. The portion was HUGE. We had plenty of leftovers for a meal the next day. The plantains were cooked perfectly. You definitely want to get extra green and yellow sauces. The green sauce is a spicy cilantro sauce. The first visit was a fluke or something. The second visit was a complete 180. Chaotic nightmare. We ordered 3 different meals. Two came out fine. Mine was a mistake after mistake. For some reason, they could not get my side correct! Twice they gave me someone else's order. I wound up with three meals and 4 different sides because they kept messing it up. The line was out the door and they were not organized enough to keep up. It wasn't just my order that was wrong. Several customers waited over 30 minutes for their food. They are quick to take your money but slow to give you food (if they even give it to your right). I was deeply disappointed. I used to love this place. Giant portions, friendly service, really good food. Today...... Not so much. Unfriendly and impatient server even though we were the only ones in line. He kept getting crabby. Cranky or miserable but I'm not sure exactly what his issue was. I spent $68 on a to go order for myself and my two teenage sons that spend every minute that they aren't working or in school, at the gym. I asked if I could have the sauce for my chicken, he told me it was already in the bag. The three bowls, a full chicken dinner, and I got five thimble sized sauces, and even though the food was fantastic, the service is not like it was. They used to be super friendly, really happy to see you, maybe this guy was just having a bad day but I'm not spending $70 on takeout to be dismissed. We won't be going back. Moe's is right across the street, Cava and Chipotle aren't very far away, I felt absolutely insulted because he did not want to be taking care of my order. He really acted like I was a problem. The food was, according to my kids, "fire" and "lit".... not sure exactly what that means, but going in there, ordering the food, receiving the food, paying what I paid, and being really unhappy with the service... And those platters aren't just a small scoop of food and sides, it's big things like fried whole fish and steaks! Went here after a long day and we thoroughly enjoyed their food. Full of flavor from the meats itself all the way down to the sauces. They have a variety of grilled meats and other food options, and they get a lot of business for a reason! Great accommodating staff who kept reassuring us that our food was coming since we ordered bigger platters and took longer to cook. The space is a bit small for dining in, but a lot of people order from this place to-go. It can get a bit loud when they start chopping up the chicken, so my sound sensitive folks, be wary! I enjoyed having lunch at Charcoal Chicken. Walked in, instantly greeted by friendly staff. The person taking our order was very enthusiastic about the food. We got the quartered chicken with sides . The chicken was delicious and juicy. My favorite side was the plantains . They had a variety of drinks, cool desserts like tres leches and limoncello cake, and more. Place was clean and organized. They were really great about giving extra sauces. Parking was ample, there are lots of stores and places to eat next door. I think this is a cool concept, whole , quartered rotisserie chicken on the go, and actually haven't had Peruvian style to go chicken since moving here to the 757. Service: 2/5, staff seemed friendly when we first entered the building but soon after became very pushy for us to order. Keep in mind we're not from the area and hadn't had time to review the menu. In the cashier's haste he didn't hear me say I wanted white meat chicken but agreed to correct his error with no issue (there is an up charge for white meat). Food: 3.5/5, chicken was really good as it was seasoned well and not dry. I opted for the veggies which were heavy on zucchini which I like but not that much. The fried rice was very tasty to include chicken pieces among the egg and veggies. The yellow and green sauces were good (better than Chicken Fiesta in my opinion). Highly disappointed with meal overall. The gyro was different than any other one I have ever had. The meat were like strips that look like bacon. I honestly could tell which one was chicken and which was lamb, I just figured the lamb would be the darker of the two. The gyro came with big strips of onions and peppers accompanied with puffs of some type of cheese and what I'm guessing may have been mayonnaise. I able to get it down with out it breaking in half thankfully. The saving grace was the French fries. While I wasn't happy with the amount I got for the price, they were the best part of the meal. I went out on a limb to do something different and should've stuck to what the place was known for, it's chicken. So I'll give them another try before cutting them off completely. The food is exactly what you'd expect from a Peruvian place, mouth-watering pollo a la braza, incredible fried rice, and the yucca is a must as a side. The only reason this review is not a perfect 5 stars is because the employees are not overly welcoming, nor is the place set up in a way that promotes enjoying your meal in the restaurant (it's small, and the music is quite loud).
