Firstly, the menu! I loved their range of options, only issue is drinks; there's barely any. Service is okay (could be better), + pretty slow. The place isn't the greatest looking but isn't the worst either, there's music playing all the time as-well. My food came out last, took a very long time - another table got their food before mines. Unfortunately I had to take two stars due to their customer service when you dine in (Dinner) . You order your food, you get your food and that's it! Your waitress disappeared behind the counter to sit on her phone. I had to go in my vehicle to get my own water. it was ridicules , another couple came after us and they sat there for a long time waiting to put their order in . I love this spot, the food is so perfectly seasoned. It's definitely authentic and more of a hole in the wall spot. I usually order ahead and take my food to go. In some cultures it's rude for a waiter/waitress to check up on the guests without request, I think that applies here. If you flag them down they're happy to help you. Set your expectations properly or order takeout. Everything doesn't have to be a fine dining experience. You get what you order and it taste's amazing every time. There is a little wait so you would be better off calling in your order. They have a wide variety of foods that really didn't seem partial to one area so they will have something for everyone. Since El Gavilan on Chesapeake closed I've been looking for a place to get Salvadoran papusas. Mayas has them, although not as many choices! Mostly Honduran and Mexican dishes. The food is good, at a fair price. There is no English menu, only Spanish. No alcohol. Service is average. Chips come with bean dip instead of salsa. Six TVs showing a variety of Latino programs and sports. They say it's a bakery too but I don't know. This is a good place to try something more adventurous than your average El Azteca. read more

I had the traditional carne asada the meat tasted great little chewy but great flavor the rest of the plate now the rice and beans were cold and bland I didn't care for the salad not my type of salad so no judgment there. My mother had the sopa de res that she loved ! But it really came back to punch her in the butt an hour later and up to three hours later if you get what I'm saying. We went in hoping to have a truly authentic food experience: well I'm not fluent in Spanish and not only was the menu almost totally in Spanish, but there was no one there able or willing to translate. If I'd been in Honduras, I might have expected as much ....but in Hampton Roads(?) We left without wanting to take a gamble. I will drive from the other end of VA Beach to this restaurant to eat their pupusas, the drive and traffic have always been worth it. Pupusas are good, and the drinks all strong. It can be a little difficult to communicate with the waitstaff (I speak no Spanish), but that adds to the authenticity. read more

Rather unassuming from the look of the place, just a little hole in the wall joint. Walk in and it's like being transported back to Centeral America and my favorite little restraunt there. Don't expect any Americanized services, no chips and slasa while you wait or even a waiter to be overly attentive. Walkin, get the attention of the gal behind the counter then go sit down. A menu will arrive shortly. No, the wait staff is not going to bring you a water (or anything for that matter)until you ask for it. Once you order the generous portions of food will arrive and this might be the last time you see your waitress/waitor unless you know to wave them over. It was the same way in Centeral America so I don't mind but someone unaccustome to it might take offence as they are not being checked on every so often. Personally I love it. The last thing I need when engaged in conversation is overly attentive waitstaff. The food is authentic, hot, cooked to order and delisious. Weve ordered food for pick up twice from this place and both times they have gotten the whole order wrong..i ordered the fried pirk chop with rice and beans of course they gave me a baked pork chop no rice with eggs cheese and avacado of course none of which i like at all i dont recommend this place at all...how can you get a whole order just completely opposite of what you asked for. read more
