While my sister was in town, we decided to head to Tacos Y Tequila to grab a bite to eat on a Wednesday around 7pm. I live about 30+ mins away but I remember the food being very good last time, so I didn't mind the drive at all. We were greeted by the host as soon as we walked in and were seated right away. Our server was wonderful. She was very pleasant and helped us with some of the questions we had regarding the menu items. We started with the Fresh Tableside Guacamole and it tasted great! We did order it with a "medium" spice level and it wasn't spicy at all but other than that, it was very good. Since the Street Tacos caught our eye, we both decided on those. We ordered the Al Pastor, Barbacoa, Carnitas, Chorizo, Camarón, Nopales and Lengua. The tacos were served with a variety of different sauces, ranging from sweet and mild to very spicy. Most of the tacos were delicious, our favorite was the Al Pastor, Barbacoa, and Camarón. We weren't a fan of the Lengua, it was very dry, chewy and unflavored. Overall, we had a great experience. My husband found this spot a little while ago and ordered the Birria Pizza. It was honestly delicious! So, when were in the area today we had to stop by. No one was at the front when we came in, so after waiting for a short time we just sat down in a near by booth. We later saw a sign that said to wait to be seated, but I guess it was ok this time. We started off with the guacamole. I havent eaten a ton of guacamole, but this was honestly the best I've had. Loved it! A+ all day! I ordered the Mango habanero We ordered the Mango Habanero wings and they were delicious! My husband ordered the Birria Taco and he said they weren't his favorite. Unfortunately, the service & food quality has seems to go down the last 4 times I've ate from here. I am not sure I would recommend them for food; the drinks could still be tasty, but I can't say for sure. Let's start with service. I came in today for lunch, alone. I sat in a booth. The server came to take my drink order & I asked for a minute or two on food. She didn't return until 15 minutes later; she also had a table of 6-8, but I was in view of her with the table. She took their drink and food orders and still has not came back. Even after I got my food, she came back long after I was finished to even ask if I wanted my check. I had never felt so ignored in a food establishment, especially when to be fair it's on the higher end for a lunch menu. The food. Honestly.. it did seem like fresh rice & beans, but absolutely no seasoning. As far as salt. I am not a salt heavy person, but there was none. On top of that, it was cold. My quesadilla also seems to have very minimal steak in comparison to the large peppers. The only thing that was hot was the actual tortilla & the cheese. It's really sad because I use to absolutely love this place. I do not believe I'll be recommending or trying them for a while. As far as the inside, they do seem to always be cleaning. Unfortunately today there was an odd smell. Overall, this may have been one of the worst food experiences I've had in a while. I hope in the future I do not have a similar experience, if I decide to return. I'd also like to notate, there was another server at a table behind me that was great! We dined here with friends for our anniversary on the 20th. I love tacos I love tequila so I figured we give this a try! I made reservations for six about a week in advance without worry. We arrived before time and we were seated immediately. The service was quick! The Ambiance is beautiful! I ordered a margarita, the organic option and it was good! I believe everybody that ordered drinks at the table was pleased with their drinks. The food it was okay my thing is if you don't eat it all in one sitting then it may not be good as leftovers later hence that's what I experience with my chicken quesadilla it was very good flavorful and huge! A good portion I couldn't finish it all but when I took it home and tried to finish it the next day it just wasn't as appealing as it was when I was at the restaurant. Parking I believe it's only Street Parking ... I didn't see a garage nearby but we were lucky to find street parking minutes steps away from the restaurants entrance. We visited on a Friday night and it was fairly steady. Don't if I will return, but give them a try if you're into tacos and tequila it's definitely pricier than most places so definitely check that out as far as the menu before you go just to determine if you willing to give it a try. I'm really disappointed with my experience trying to plan my graduation dinner here. On Friday morning (5/8), I was looking for local Mexican restaurants near my university that could accommodate a larger group. I had been here before, liked the location, and thought the food was decent, so I checked their website. To my surprise, the site allowed me to book a reservation for up to 25 people online like a normal reservation -- not even a private event inquiry. I completed the booking and received a confirmation for my group. (first screenshot) Wanting to make sure everything was set, I called on 5/11 to confirm the reservation. The person on the phone was rude from the start, and it was so loud in the background I could barely hear him. Then he tells me, "Oh, we aren't taking any reservations this weekend, our website isn't working." That response honestly shocked me. If the reservation system "isn't working," why are reservations still being accepted online? You're risking people showing up with large parties expecting a confirmed reservation. Had I not called ahead, it would've been embarrassing and incredibly disappointing to arrive with my graduation group and find out there was no reservation at all. What made the conversation even more frustrating was how unclear and inconsistent the answers were. Instead of giving me a straightforward yes or no about whether my reservation would actually be honored, I was told something along the lines of, "Maybe I can do something for you, but if a large group comes before you, I can't guarantee anything." That's not reassuring when you're trying to organize a graduation dinner for 25 people. I even had my mom call later to see if maybe communication would be clearer the second time around, but she got the same attitude and the same back-and-forth responses without any clear confirmation. I get 25 is a big group, just say yes or no. What makes this worse is that their website is currently promoting graduation dinners and parties right on the homepage. It feels very misleading to advertise graduation celebrations while knowingly having a broken reservation system. One of their margaritas, which I also sampled, was excellent; it was powerful and well-balanced without being overpowering. The atmosphere is adorable, however it felt a little cramped, particularly at peak hours. The service may have been better, but it was only mediocre. Went here a couple weeks ago on a whim after a nice long sunday funday around the city! Being in a prime walkable location with scenic outdoor seating was a high scoring factor for me as weather is getting warmer and i find myself gathering with loved ones more often. I ordered the Carne Asada Tacos which packed so much flavor and the perfect balance of toppings making for a wonderful experience every bite. My drink was the Guava Margarita (which fun fact my dog is named guava so every time i have the possibility of ordering something along the lines I DO) this time it surpassed expectations of the Guava fruit i love being the sweet and lively fruit it is. read more

Birria, vibes, and baby-step guac--Tacos & Tequila Review Tacos & Tequila has been on my foodie wish list for a while, so after wrapping up our Sweet Tooth Saturday series, I decided it was finally time to check them out. The timing was perfect--not too busy, no wait, and they had both indoor and outdoor seating available. Dog-friendly? Sort of. Outdoor seating is dog-friendly, but since Lexi was in her stroller and it was HOT, we opted to sit inside in the A/C, and no one seemed to mind. Now for the food... Chips & Salsa - Solid! Chips tasted freshly made and had a good crunch. Guacamole - Okay, here's the tea. I noticed the table next to me getting tableside guac made (yes, it looked amazing), so I asked if I could watch--and then asked to try some myself. The waiter explained that what I got was their in-house guac made earlier in the day, not the tableside version. The texture was a little too smooth for me (almost baby food consistency), but the flavor was nice, especially mixed with their salsa. I'd definitely try it again--maybe next time, I'll go for the tableside experience. Birria Tacos - The star of the meal! These are their most popular item and for good reason. Corn tortillas were clearly made in-house, perfectly crisp on the outside, and generously filled with tender meat. My one critique? They needed more cheese. I didn't get any cheese pull, which is something I personally look for in a birria taco. My gold standard is still a spot I visited in Maryland over three years ago, and nothing has topped them yet--but these were definitely solid. I'd give them a strong 8/10. Side of Rice - Unexpectedly AMAZING. Flavorful, well-seasoned, and honestly a 10/10 for me. I always order rice at Mexican restaurants and this one is definitely in my top-tier list. Organic Margarita - Meh. This was a miss for me. Very sour and lacked sweetness--definitely needed more agave to balance it out. It's one of their most popular drinks (made with fresh juice and organic ingredients), but it just didn't do it for me. I'd try another drink next time. Overall, this place has great potential. Friendly service, quick seating, and a menu full of things I'd still love to try. A few hits, a couple misses--but I'd absolutely return, especially for the tacos and rice. Today me and my friends wanted to have lunch and celebrate taco Tuesday upon arrival. Everything went well until we met our server Jose when we were ordering food he never clarified if I wanted a chicken or steak and I take some accountability for not verifying what meat was on my quesadilla, but he kept insinuating that I said this and I said that when I never said anything at all mind you we are with three small babies and then up on paying, he proceeds to place his own tip amount in thinking I didn't see but I did and I confronted him on it. I'm really big on customer service and today was probably the worst service I've had in Norfolk and I'm really upset because the food was really good but the customer service today was horrible and I really hate to be that person but today I was. read more

The ambience at this restaurant was quite nice. The customer service was pretty decent as well. The food didn't take long to come out at all. They customize a drink just for me, which was a nice added bonus. The food was amazing. I tried their steak which was succulent and juicy. It was not overcooked. It was just right. They also bring out chips and salsa for the table. Their food is cooked to order Including the chips. I tried a number of different items and everything was just as delicious as the first item. Teachers love tacos y tequila! Friday was the last day of school and pay day Friday. Last minute a few teachers met up at Tacos Y Tequila for celebratory drinks and food. We teachers decided to go for the corner outside table. Our server gave us menus right away. We were given the largest menu I've ever seen. I ordered a skinny girl jalapeño margarita, but next time I'll definitely be getting the house margarita. It was happy hour and certain drinks were on the happy hour list. For food I got the chicken fajita quesadilla. I couldn't have had a better meal. The only reason I gave four stars was because a they didn't mention that the skinny jalapeño margarita wasn't on the happy hour menu. In addition, a co-worker purchased the table shots and forgot to put it on their tab. Either way, I would come back for another meal. read more

The ambiance was super cute however the disclaimer for eating outside was the flies and we got up to go sit on the far side of the patio and they pretty much took over which made us leave a tad bit early. I checked out Tacos y Tequila on 7/18 as I was in the area after attending Mass at nearby Sacred Heart. When I arrived, TyT looked busy, but I was seated immediately because I dined alone. While the host took me to the table, I was able to take in the restaurant's interior. They opened up the dining area a bit - it looked roomier and more comfy and welcoming than I remembered (compared to previous visits when this building was still Reg Dog Saloon). It honestly looked brand new. My server was Cam - he was quiet but nice, although it took a while to get an initial table visit and he performed minimal table checks (I had to ask for things from other employees who passed by, like napkins and drink refills). With this being an initial visit, I took my time to read the menu. I settled on the Arroz Texano, which is rice mixed with grilled chicken, beef strips and shrimp, then complemented with cheese dip, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes and a house salad. The entree was tasty and plentiful (I took most of the Arroz Texano home), but I didn't realize until after I returned home that I never actually received the house salad (per TyT's menu, it stated this entree included a house salad). I guess that's on me for not paying attention to what I was reading, but I guess Cam didn't know it came with a salad, either. No harm done, I guess, but I'm sure someone else would've pointed that out. Refills were only provided upon asking, but the sweet tea I ordered came in a big glass. Finally, as nearly all Mexican restaurants do, complimentary chips and salsa were provided, but no white sauce. I didn't ask, so I'm not positive if white sauce is off the menu altogether or if it is something that can be provided per request. I personally don't mind either way, but I understand some dislike white sauce as it's not considered authentic to Mexican cuisine. Overall, I enjoyed my first ever visit to Tacos y Tequila. It's a few steps above anything Red Dog ever offered and it appears diners are happy with them (a nice sized crowd on a Wednesday night seemed to suggest as much). I think anticipation and attentiveness needs to be turned up a notch or two, but Cam's kindness balanced that out. If all of their servers are as friendly, TyT will be fine. Wow! What an awesome place, the portions are HUGE! Everything is so cheap, especially lunch specials! I recommend the steaks(which comes with atleast 2 sides) and birria tacos. The drink menu was also very intensive! However, they are only starting out so be patient with them, our server was also distracted by the TV and his phone... service was okay, he was nice and friendly but it wasn't great. We were promptly seated, and then had three different men come up to us to take our drink order. It was very unclear who our server was, but it might be the type of establishment where everyone kinda has all the tables. We loved our drinks. I had the jalapeño Margarita, and I really enjoyed it! It was reasonably priced for what I was expecting. My partner got the frozen peach margarita, and also really loved it a lot. Our food was okay- I was expecting something greater than generic Southeastern Virginia Mexican food, but that's what we got. We started with cheese dip that was under room temp, so we asked to get it microwaved, and it was much better when it came back out (although it took a while for one of the 15 people to come by for us to ask). We got the volcanito with steak, and it was basically steak inside of a white flour tortilla with the top twisted and cheese sauce drizzled over the top. It wasn't bad, but wasn't great. We also had to ask for white sauce, but they do have it! Overall, the service was good, when someone was around, but it seemed to be all or nothing. They'll probably work all the kinks out soon to make sure to service the patio and the inside all in one. We will visit again, but won't go out of our way, if you know what I mean. read more

I decided to try this place because it was posted on a thread of places with really great tacos in the area. The vibe is awesome. Very chill, party and bar like. Lots of screens to watch the games! Outside and inside seating. Even though it was really busy, we were sat right away/ Awesome deals for drinks at happy hour and also the drinks are pretty great prices to begin with. The tacos were yummy. Lots of different salsa options as well. The tacos were served in a long rectangular plate which was tough for me to eat off of because I usually drop some and make a bit of a mess, lol. They were smaller in size and less meat than the usual place I go to. But, the flavor was great 7.5/10. Their habanero sauce is HOTTTT... mymouth was on fire for like five minutes. Be careful. My waitress was nice seem to be a little distracted They have street taco specials $2.50 and regular tacos $1.50 .... The protein options are shredded chicken or beef , shrimp and pork. Myself and my two friends thought the meat was under seasoned and a bit dry. We all got street tacos, decided to try the regular tacos they were a little more to my liking. The mixed drinks were a little weak we were advised they're pre mixed I'm not sure if I would revisit but if I do I'll try the barria tacos next time!!! read more

Shary and I were on a random side quest to find a certain kind of hat. This brought us through Norfolk, VA, and then we missed a couple turns. Next thing you know, the word "Tequila" appears hovering above the street like a guiding angel. So, duh, we parked. This place has a solid house margarita. Ended up at this spot spontaneously as my friend and I were seeking refuge from horrid down pour on a Sunday evening! It's surrounded by other cool looking spots that we're definitely trying out. This place is bigger than it looks from one glance, perfect for large parties, like 10+ people. There's tons of chairs and tables, and a nice sized bar that has seating all around it as well with TV's in every corner. We ordered piña coladas and they were good, nothing crazy but perfectly sweet and smooth to taste. Our birria tacos were okay tbh, nothing close to the real deal but good enough for me to enjoy happily at a TexMex place. I'd rate them a 3/5 and would choose something else next time. My new favorite dining option on Colley! Norfolk has plenty of taco joints and Mexican eateries, but this one tops the charts. I was skeptical at first due to all the grand opening hype, but I can now confirm, it's true. Offering both indoor and outdoor dining options, it is a large establishment and definitely a good place for a party. We went on a Friday and made reservations, which i'd highly suggest for the weekend. The menu is extensive and even includes a vegetarian section. And the cocktails are a treat! Our party started with the tableside guacamole, which is a must. Don't bother with the side order. This one is made before your eyes; they bring out the rolling cart, mortar and pestle, etc. we enjoyed with complimentary chips and salsa. My husband and I both ordered the tacos (one chicken, one shrimp, and one cactus), which were seasoned and cooked perfectly, and accompanied by a salsa of our choice. Our friends got the fajitas and a burrito, both which were easily two meals in one, and a mangonada drink. I was stunned when the check came since everything was so reasonably priced. The saying goes "You eat with your eyes first" and the appearance was unappetizing the ratio of meat and chicken should've been more balanced of all the things to skimp on why the rice? Also eating inside is awful it was so noisy could barely hear my friend speaking to me much less the thoughts in my head. Our server had a trainee and it was nice to see them training up a staff. We ordered food and drinks and chatted for a while. Great, fresh and a shareable size made this the go to app. But the vegetarian dish was mediocre at best. To flavor in the rice or bean enchiladas and the spinach enchilada was literally spinach in a tortilla. No seasoning and no flavor.
