Chips and salsa was good. I ordered a burrito bowl with steak, it was good and filling. My husband had steak enchiladas. He said they were okay, just too much cheese for his liking. The service was great! The place was nicely decorated showcasing various liquor bottles. The fried ice cream was provided in a tostada shell and chocolate drizzle on the plate. We love Gran Maya! All of the food that we've had is delicious and they have really good margaritas. It is our go-to for Mexican food in Ghent! On weekends, they will bring in DJs at night so it can get loud after 8 but regular dinner hours aren't super busy or loud. The service has always been super fast and friendly. read more

I don't know what it is with Mexican food in this region, but it seems like nobody does it correct. It's like trying to find good Chinese food in London or something! I went there today for a late lunch/early dinner, and while the service was great and our waitress was lovely, the food was just not even averagely good. I ordered cheese enchiladas with rice and beans, and while the rice and beans were good, the enchiladas weren't. It seemed like they stuffed melted cheese into cold corn tortillas and topped it off with a red sauce and a sprinkling of a different cheese. The cheese tasted odd and had a weird consistency, the tortilla didn't seem cooked, and the sauce was okay. I just don't know what to say. It wasn't even hot when it got to the table. The rice and beans were, but not the enchiladas, despite being on a hot plate, it just was peculiar. My partner's quesadilla he said was just okay as well, but at least that looked hot. The salsa was nice, and the first round of chips were good. The second round tasted over-fried. We had also gotten their queso fundido, and while it was piping hot and looked great, digging into it, the cheese was like water. It had no thickness, and there was more meat than cheese. After all of that, we decided to try their sopapillas, which I had never had before. It unfortunately tasted like their oil needed changed, and that's all I could really focus on despite it being coated in cinnamon and sugar as well as drizzled in honey. Showed up during lunch time. It was surprisingly empty. We were seated right away and the waiter took our drinks just fine. However, when we began to order our entrees I felt like the server was not friendly. My friend asked for guacamole, but pronounced it as guac. This irritated the waiter and he promptly corrected her. I ordered the enchiladas poblanas, and ended up getting mole enchiladas. Of course as a Hispanic I know the difference. I didn't send it back, but instead ask for salsa to add some spice because the mole was too sweet. The waiter asked me if I mean hot sauce. At this point we were just wanting to pay. That salsa I ordered was an extra $3.25, and was the smallest bowl of salsa ever. The place is pretty, and has a lot of tables. I would love to come back with a different staff member. I'm not sure if I will because of the service though. read more

We tried this new Mexican restaurant in Ghent that took the place of an old staple. The decor was classed up with gorgeous light fixtures and the booths and tables were set up the same way, but with new upholstery. As others have said, the menu is quite large but I always go for the vegetarian section anyway. I had the veggie fajitas (my go-to!) and I was very impressed. The portion size was large and the mixed veggies were cooked perfectly and included broccoli which was a nice touch. I loved the lightly pickled cucumber on the salad it came with. You also get rice AND beans. My friend got the veggie enchiladas and she cleaned her plate! The chips and salsa were good. I prefer my salsa a little more chunky but this was flavorful, just a little thin. If you like hot sauce, their house made sauce is more of a verde but also very tasty and not super hot. Sebastian was our waiter and he was incredibly kind, respectful, and attentive! All in all, a pleasant experience! I can't wait to go back and try something else. read more

Hands down one of the best Mexican restaurants in the Hampton roads area if not the best ! They are relatively new, I'm not sure if they bought the old Mexican spot that used to be to occupy the building or simply rebranded but the food was delicious. It was the most authentic Mexican that I've had in the Hampton roads and as someone who has lived in both Arizona and San diego, I don't say that lightly at all. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful they do not have a patio from what I can see. The service was quick and the manager actually made rounds and engaged with the customers so that was nice to see. My server was fantastic and timely as well. I will definitely be back ! read more

First time at Gran maya in Ghent. We ordered food to go and the service was amazing! We were greeted by the entire staff and were given a lot of time to view the menu to decide what we want. The man who helped us went above and beyond to make sure we knew what we wanted and were happy with our choices. The food came out really quick as well and I really appreciated paying for the food once the food came out to make sure everything was great (sometimes it's about the little things) It was also very beautiful inside and very clean! I'm giving this place a 10/10 and I think our Ghent / Norfolk family should check them out! My final note - everything was seasoned to perfection. The rice and beans especially, and the portions are amazing. You really get more than what you pay for in my opinion! read more

This place deserves much more love than it's currently getting. The food is quality and has a great taste, prices are acceptable for Norfolk, and the service has always been very friendly and personable. The inside of the restaurant is also very beautiful and unique. My only thought as to why it's not more popular is that the building doesn't inherently look like a restaurant from the road and can be easily overlooked as a result. I'd highly recommend this place for locals to become their new "go-to" Mexican restaurant as it has few flaws and accomplishes what it's sets out to do. read more

My husband and I wanted Mexican food so we thought we'd give this place a try. The waiter said they'd been open for 3 weeks. The place is very nicely done and very spacious, with a bar and lots of seating. The chips came out warm with salsa, both fresh made in house. The guacamole appetizer was made table side and so good, nothing beats fresh guac. Their menu is pretty extensive so it took us some time to decide because so much of it sounded good. We both went with burritos, my husband ordered the carne asada steak burrito and I ordered a different steak burrito. The burritos came out warm, the steak was cooked just right and very nicely seasoned. The staff were very friendly, and the food is authentic made by Mexican staff. The prices seemed very reasonable and we were overall very satisfied. Would definitely recommend this place 10/10 :) read more

The food was alright but DISGUSTING for the price.... They had so many taxes our bill was $117 but because of meal taxes and services taxes it went up to $169. For 4 people that is INSANE. Place was empty and that should have been a sign that we should have walked out! Go to LAS PALMAS FOR A BETTER OPTION!!!!! Went to this new place in Ghent last night. They have only been open for about a month and do not yet have their liquor license which they warned us about upfront and we really enjoyed ourselves. I know it was a Monday, but I think they can use some love. This site has been a Mexican restaurant, maybe Del Sol?, for many years, but it has certainly been updated. We sat in the front part with the huge windows and that was nice for sunset. Not sure if the a/c would keep up well on a really hot day, but it was fine yesterday. The service was attentive. We were also checked on someone who is probably the owner or manager making sure we enjoyed our dinner. They brought chips and salsa immediately. They were good but pretty standard. We ordered the chorizo fundito dip, big and very tasty. I ordered a grilled chicken and shrimp with cheese sauce rice and beans dish. There was a LOT of cheese sauce, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I did fish my chicken out of it and put it on a separate plate to eat it. Both meats were tasty and well seasoned. I would definitely go back for more of those grilled shrimp. Very good! My husband got a carne asada/chorizo dinner and he really enjoyed it. On a negative note, my husband felt like he could smell cigarette smoke coming from the kitchen area. I couldn't detect it but it bothered him. The ladies' bathroom was SHINY clean. Spotless! Overall, we enjoyed our meal, found it reasonably priced, and plan to go back soon! The drink menu is intriguing so I hope they have their liquor license next time. read more

Okay the food was very good, your typical Americanized Mexican cuisine. However, when entering the restaurant I smelled nothing but bowel movement. My table was horribly placed by the bathroom where we smelled nothing but poop. It made our entire dining experience unbearable and we could barely enjoy the food because of the smell.
