We were looking for a place to eat that would have lots of gluten-free options, and Mexican always does the trick. This restaurant has a nice interior, and the wait staff were friendly and efficient. My first clue that this wasn't going to be a good experience was the lack of cleanliness of the restaurant and that the outdoor seating is on the parking lot. The most surprising thing, though, was how little flavor everything we ordered had. From the salsa to the guacamole to the combo plate (taco & enchilada) that I personally ordered and tasted, it was all nearly flavorless; no seasoning or spice whatsoever. Another person in my party ordered chimichangas and got a flour tortilla wrapped around boiled chicken drowned in some strange white sauce. It almost looked like soup. He took one bite and couldn't go further. I wish the other two people with us had better experiences but it was bad across the board. Visited Mi Hogar for the first time, and it was a pretty good experience! We got seated right away and was served our waters, chips and salsa really quickly. Salsa was slightly too sweet for our preference, but the chips were A+. We ordered birria tacos, lengua tacos and chicken tacos. The consumme for the birria was not quite it...it was missing salt/beef flavor. But the lengua tacos we had were so soft and tender, definitely worth it! Chicken tacos were alright, but YMMV! I come here very often and always have good food and good service. Great little casual place.

I've been coming here since this place opened, literally hundreds of times. I've never reviewed it because the food is consistently just so so, nothing really stands out and they tend to over cook everything. I notice that they have now instituted a surcharge for using your credit card to pay your bill. I'm not sure how long this has gone on because I don't usually check my bill that closely but this is certainly the last time I'll visit because of this. It seems that restaurants do this or attempt to do this since covid. I notice too that some rescind it because they discover that sales suffer and it's ridiculous to squeeze your customer for a few extra cents and then lose considerable dollars. Most people don't acknowledge this insult because it doesn't amount to much but it shows how little the restauranteur respects you as a customer and appreciates you coming to their business instead of anywhere else. Some might say "well, you can just pay cash", I say I'll just go elsewhere. That $1.26 surcharge just cost this place about $200 every month of every year (that's just me). No charge for the math lesson Mi Hogar. By the way, the majority of restaurant sales are in credit cards so as a customer, you are really just agreeing to pay an extra fee and getting nothing of extra value at all for your money. Metaphorically it's like asking for and then having your pocket picked. Please don't tell me that costs have gone up because you have certainly increased your menu prices. I don't begrudge you that at all but you'd be smarter to consider your costs and price your menu accordingly. To add a fee just so that I can pay you is absurd. read more

My family has been going to Mi Hogar since they first opened near ODU on Hampton Boulevard. I should say that the owners are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Second the food is always delicious. I've never had a bad meal there. And third the food and service is so fast that we often joke that our meal will show up before we sit down. Get the tacos de Carnitas they're wonderful fresh guacamole is awesome. Great tamale, really anything on the menu is great. read more

Hands down one of the best places around for delivery during COVID, they're in heavy rotation when I'm looking for something to eat. My go-to are there carne asada tacos combo which comes with rice and beans. The tacos comes with the standard authentic limes, cilantro, and onions. Most times i splurge and get there queso blanco which is delicious. Definitely hits the spot all for under $18 plus delivery. I've only ever ordered their tacos and can only speak on these. This spot is one of my neighborhood favorites. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. Plus I get to practice my Spanish. My go-to is of course FISH. Quiero los tacos de pea ado. They are always seasoned nicely and served with perfectly complimenting condiments. Of course gotta wash it down with the Jumbo-Rocks-Salt Margarita. During COVID my tastebuds have been fiendish for normalcy and it is worth noting that QUALITY HAS BEEN HIGHER (compared to pre-COVID) at all of my favorite spots. We haven't eaten here in years, since there are several places just like it closer to the house. It's surprisingly still good. This is run of the mill fast, affordable Mexican. Nothing super special, though they have made some decent additions to the menu, like fresh guacamole (they didn't used to do that, which is one of the reasons we stopped going - since everyone else does, they must have bowed to the competition). The lunch specials are good and just enough food that you leave full but not stuffed. I have to say that they have my favorite white sauce to dip your chips in (you have to ask for it, but they don't charge). I love whatever that spice mix is! read more

Was heading somewhere and came across their Nice Mexican restaurant with a family atmosphere. Was not busy and was immediately seated with chips and salsa. The salsa had a great taste, but was not spicy and the chip also tasted good, but we prefer lighter chips. Also got Queso and guacamole which tasted good. Dinner was shrimp taco's which included peppers, onions, and cilantro...shrimp was well seasoned and there was rice and beans on the side. My wife got chicken fajitas that were cooked wonderfully with onions (wife doesn't like peppers). Will be telling friends about this place. read more

My friend and I decided to try this place out as I had read other reviews online about it. To give you some background, I'm from California and he's from Texas so we come from places that have ample "Mexican" and Tex-mex combos. IMO, the food was quite tasty. Prices were reasonable. I had a California burrito which merely meant it had guacamole in it (along with steak, beans and rice). They have a wide selection in their menu and at first it might seem a bit intimidating as I found it to be. However, they give you the option to choose combo plates (eg taco/burrito/enchilada) for $7-8. Pretty reasonable for someone who just wants a little of everything. I just had their fried ice cream as well which was sub par IMO. They also had great margaritas that were sufficiently strong ;-) One thing I was extremely impressed with was their speed. You'll get your food in less than 5-6 min and this was when the restaurant was pretty full. So if you want something quick, cheap and tasty, I recommend this place. read more

Disappointing experience. Table salsa felt like it was just canned tomatoes with some onions. All of our food felt really under-seasoned and bland. Ceviche lacked flavor, fajitas were on the greasy side, and the enchiladas verdes were just boring. Service was good though, our waitress was really nice, attentive, and brought everything out quickly. We just moved into the neighborhood and were hoping we had a Mexican restaurant we could walk to. This place has really gone to crap. Not that it was any good to begin with. Only thing with flavor was the number four combination dinner which apparently no longer exists. Waiter said I could just order the parts separately, so I did. The tostada used to come out covered in liquid cheese. They served me something with sour cream and onion on top of a dry flat taco shell. I was highly disappointed. To top it off, they changed the house made chipotle sauce that I used to bring home to put on my eggs in the morning it was so damn good!!! It's now runny and disgusting. Sadly I won't be back. GET THE TABLE SIDE GUAC I literally just came here because I was CRAVING real homemade guacamole (not that fake stuff). I got to table side guac to go. So disappointed. I used to love this place, but now everything is poor quality. The "salsa" is made with canned tomatoes and has the consistence of soup. The meat is Taco Bell quality at $22 versus $2. Way overpriced for the really poor product they are serving. Apparently they really don't do special orders either.
