I've been looking forward to writing this bad review. My girlfriend and I ate at this place a few weeks ago. Let me start off by saying, I am NOT a picky guy. I forgive service mistakes, and long waits, lipstick smudge on a glass and all that .... but bad food... I gotta let 'em have it.
Lets start with what most people come to a Mexican place for ... the Margaritas. Their house margarita, is a terrible cheap mixer. I don't look for high end liquors or fresh squeezed limes or any of that sort in a house margarita, but this was just terrible. First, I expect a Mexican place to do a good job of picking a cheap "well" tequila... they did not. But the real problem was the mixer, it was clearly some by-the-gallon junk well below the quality of ANY mixer you can buy at the grocery store for $4 a litre. Its terribly acidic and tart, just a joke. And on top of that ... now THIS I've never experienced... the glass was rimmed with iodized table salt. What a joke. I dont know that I've EVER been to a place that did that, heck - Fridays does it better then "El Patron".... kinda sad. By the way, the flavored margaritas werent muc better.
Guacomole... ok, so they do the standard table-side guacomole... woop-dee-doo. Now, I think the guy doing ours was brand new - so I forgive him for a pretty terrible error. There was no salt. Now, I don't mean... "it wasnt salty enought for me". I mean, it was tasteless because there was no salt. Its a pretty critical ingredient in guacomole otherwise an advocado can be pretty bland. But wait... I spent I dont know how many dollars on this guacomole service, and we werent given chips. We just had the complimentary chips that come with salsa. Unable to flag down a waiter,we found salt ourselves, and carefully rationed chips. Shall I talk about the salsa-water? Dear sweet lord, you never meant for salsa to be like this. Tomato soup with some onions in it, maybe, I dont know. It was essentially tomato juice... not a chunk to be found.
Speaking of tomato... lets talk about the appetizer we ordered. I forget the menu name, but it was some sort of seafood medly civeche style. That's the nice way of saying it. It was perfectly fine wasted seafood in ketchup water. Imagine the water that comes out of ketchup when you dont shake it... thats what this was marinated in. Maybe a touch or horseradish. I'd have been happier if they simply squeeze a lemon over the seafood .... they ruined it with this ketchup water. Even if it was a great cocktail sauce, its a dumb dish... seafood marinated in cocktail sauce. wtf.
I got the steak tacos, they werent bad. I'm not raving about them, they werent memorable, but nothing bad to say.
My rating has nothing to do with it - but the service was pretty poor. I believe the owner was our waiter... and our bartender... and nowhere to be seen most the night.
This is one of those times when I just dont want to write a bad review... I want my money back. Spending $60 or so on dinner and drinks that my worst job at cooking would have been better... gimme a break. Dont bother with this place. I hope they take my review seriously and make some changes - owner seems like a nice guy, but if I had the choice I'd take a date to Taco Bell before going back to this place... because the food is better. read more
