Love love love this authentic Mexican joint in Ballard! The food here is exceptional. My absolute favorites are the Camarones enchipotlados: Shrimp in roasted chipotle sauce. Absolutely delicious. If chipotle sauce is not your thing, try the Al Tequila cream sauce. You can't go wrong with either. There chips and salsa/guacamole is great. Chips come out fresh and hot. They have various types of salsa too. In drinks I love the Margarita de Pina (Margarita with fresh pineapple juice). Expect long wait times on weekends. You have to be there to write your name on the waitlist. They won't seat you until your whole party has arrived. The only reason I have reduced a star is because the lady server working here is very rude. I have experienced this two times now. The first time I visited and asked her how much the wait time would be, she very rudely told me that she is busy and to check the waitlist. Wtf? The next time I visited, the restaurant was almost empty. My husband was parking our vehicle so I asked for a table for 2. She again pointed to a sign and told me to read that it said "need all parties to be seated". There is no need for such arrogance towards your customers. read more

Didn't seem too busy when we arrived on a Wednesday night, so we sat at the bar with all seats empty except for two. The wait for the food was long since there was a long line of to go orders ahead of us, although it would've been nice to have been given a heads up on this. The house margarita was small, which after tasting it I was actually happy there wasn't more since it wasn't very good - especially for $9. When the food did arrive, it was cold which was surprising since we sat right next to the kitchen so I'm not sure what happened. My wife also ordered a vegetable dish (jicama and cucumber) which she said was too spicy to finish, and her chorizo was a bit too burnt. Even though my dish was a bit cold, it was still flavorful which is why I'm not giving this fewer stars. Overall I'm not very impressed and will likely stick with some of the other Mexican restaurants in the area that have better food and service, like Oaxaca. read more

I really wanted to (still) like this place, and I did, in its previous location and incarnation (Señor Moose). Today, the prices are outrageous for the portions, and I wouldn't necessarily mind, if the quality was there to match. $14 for maybe a quarter cup of guacamole that had way too much tomato as filler (yes avocados are expensive, but come on)... Tortilla Soup would have been enhanced by addition of cilantro or onion or anything more than just the chicken, which unfortunately for me had lots of gristle. Tacos are just okay, but pricing at $5 a piece means they should be better than those that cost half as much as the taco truck down the street. Alas.... My family and I have been coming here for years, sometimes almost weekly. Señor Moose has the best chilaquiles in town. Pro tip: order them with salsa verde, a couple of eggs, and even though it's not on the menu they'll put chorizo on it. Other places the chips are mushy, but the Moose's house-made tortilla chips have some thickness to them that helps them stand up well to being sautéed. I was particularly impressed recently when I placed a to-go order. The person on the phone was so friendly and helpful when a few items we wanted were out of stock. Their margarita kits are out of this world. I recommend the Piña and adding jalapeño to spice them up. They give you everything you need--fresh juice mix, tequila, salt, limes, even house-made orange liqueur. Our server was very patient and had a gentle demeanor. There was plenty of seating on a Tuesday @6pm. They had indoor & outdoor seating. Everything on the menu looked good, but we just ordered 1 entree & 1 appetizer to save room for ice cream We ordered as appetizer the guacamole + salsas + chips. The guacamole was good, but the salsas were super small. Next time I would just order the guacamole + chips. We also got the Al Pastor tacos. They were delicious! They require one check for 6 or more. Very typical but always irritating like it's easier for us to figure 4 checks than for the waiter. After 10 min or so I figured 4 amounts and then the waiter was insisting on one credit card to pay. So, am I going to pay 355.000 and collect from everyone when hardly anybody carry's cash? I refused and the manager came and no problem he took the 4 cards. The food was quite good but all restaurants have gotten so expensive. Chips and salsa was 7.00 though no charge for more chips. Miniature margueritas for 14.00 and 17.00 for a Cadillac. Oh and 20% tip added! And we had to figure the 4 amounts. The good food was not worth all that so I will never go back read more

Okay. Tacos were fantastic. But the prices are outrageous even for Seattle. And the service was extremely slow. 4 tables with customers and took 30 minutes to get food. They claim to have a gluten free menu but after checking with the kitchen the fryer is shared with a beer battered fish making it not a gluten free fryer. Parking is also not great around here but that is not their fault. Maybe try ordering ahead. read more

Went here for Cinco de Mayo, they had a mariachi band playing live music and they were very good and entertaining. The food was very fresh and flavorful, the enchiladas de puya have that nice slow burn but they come out insanely freshly made and hot. Chips and guac were very tasty as well. Stopped into El Moose after driving by it without noticing it for more than a year. We got some chips n guac, the masa cakes, and carnitas tacos. The place was bustling and delightfully busy for a Friday night, but my friend seemed to snag us a table no problem before I arrived. The chips were on the thicker side - yum - and the guac was fab. We arrived around 5:30pm with a party of 8 and got seated at a foldout table in the back next to the bar, against a wall, which was impossible to interact. Service was okay, not overly warm or welcoming. I ordered the Maji maji (fish) dish, it was mediocre at best. Be weary of the kids meals. The beef was inedible so I'd go with avocado or maybe try the chicken. My husband got the carne Asada and that was okay. This is a small restaurant with about 10 or 11 tables and some bar seating. It has a very casual feel. We ordered guacamole, with chips and salsa as an appetizer. You get (3) 1oz size cups of different salsas. The salsa cups are tiny and barely shareable, but the green salsa was very tasty. The guacamole was pretty good and I really liked the chips. The chips are not your ordinary store bought chips. For our meals we ordered tacos. Both Al pastor and carnita tacos. They were very good and we received 4 of them each. They come with slices of avocado and salsa on top. The tacos are small, but very filling and they have great flavor. The only downsides are the front door of the restaurant is left open all the time and it's winter and cold during the dinner hour. The salsas are also too small and served in little plastic disposable containers. It feels more like take out with little plastic disposable cups. Mmmm. So yummy, and surprisingly vegetarian friendly! Entomatadas were perfectly saucy & delicious. The real star at our table, though, was the Papas Con Rajas. I do not typically like anything cooked in a cream sauce but this dish was completely addictive. The mixed drinks were on the sweet side, but also really tasty. This is one we'll brave the crowds to try again. One other thing I think is worth mentioning is that we stopped by about 8:15 and they close at 9. They were mostly empty by then and I wouldn't have been surprised if they turned us away-- but they served us enthusiastically which we were very grateful for. read more

The place is fairly big actually considering they have two bars and seated areas. The ambience is lovely, filled with colours and paintings (for sale). Service is friendly but slow as they were packed and looks like food is made fresh so no problems. Between the four of us we ordered: - eggs with chorizo and beans: not the best chorizo out there - a vegan dish: they didn't have to many great vegan options so our friend wasn't really happy with his dish. Might not be a good place for pure vegans. - huevos mexicana was good - huevos divorciada was the best - two tacos with eggs on top divided by baked beans one side with red salsa and the other side with green salsa. Delicious and light. I think you need to know when to come and what to order because we had 2.5 dishes that were good out of 4. Drank the Pineapple Margarita- it was the right amount of sweetness and the flavor was nice. A bit more interesting than your typical sweet, fruity margaritas. Ate the papas con rajas, and I was envious of my sister who ate the Carne de res en adobo. My potatoes were bland and soft, and it didn't go particularly well with the tortillas. It was just too much, starch on carbs... I enjoyed the cute, colorful decor and the restaurant was busy with many customers. I just didn't love the food. Love this hidden gem! They serve cafe de olla! I've been here for breakfast and lunch several times and their fare is OH SO DELICIOUS! So many yummy items to choose from, a varied and original menu. We aren't vegetarians, so I'm not sure how difficult it would be to order vegetarian food here, but I am a gluten-free eater and have no difficulties at all. The restaurant is so colorful, comfortable, and clean. The staff attentive and kind. We are working our way through the menu slowly and deliberately and happily. I had heard the food at Senor Moose was very good; I didn't know it would be amazing. We started with chips and salsa. The chips are home made and fresh from the fryer with just the perfect amount of salt. The sample of salsa was lovely; one was a peanut with a touch of smokiness; another was cilantro and super fresh. Sorry Yelpers--when the dishes arrived we dug in so fast I forgot to snap a few photos. My son had a shredded beef with housemade chorizo and bacon with cheese. It was slightly smoky and robust, but not heavy. I had the Camerones in a tequila cream sauce that was buttery and decadent. It came with rice and black beans and great housemade corn tortillas. Service was gracious and casual and prices were good. I'll be back with hubby on date night. read more
