We used to enjoy coming here, but after today, we are done. The food quality has plummeted--the octopus was served so undercooked. My son has been ordering this same dish since 2024 so when we saw how quickly it came out, we knew there was something wrong. What was worse than the food was the attitude; our waitress Juanita brushed off our concerns with a lame excuse about a staff change in the kitchen. If you can't hit your own standards, don't charge full price for it. They've lost our business for good. I paid full price and gave a good tip, she is only interested in that aspect of her job. When you go to a restaurant you are there for an experience and today our experience was NOT good enough. read more

Wonderful first visit to El Mezcal Mexican Restaurant off SR 441 in Mount Dora. I was immediately greeted and seated during lunchtime today. My server also arrived very quickly - I had to ask him for a few extra minutes before placing my order. Decent chips and salsa served first in an attractive and friendly setting. El Mezcal is a fan favorite around here, and I can see why. In business only 5 years, folks pack this place when they are hungry for Mexican food. My Camarones Mezcal with shrimp, rice, spinach, broccoli, and Avocado was delicious (although I thought it came with mushrooms, which I did not get). I would have liked a bit more rice with the meal, especially because the rice was so good. I ordered a Starry, which it appears they don't carry anymore (Pepsi products here). But, overall, a great first visit. The restaurant (and restroom) were very clean and they even roll up to your table if you order the fresh guacamole. Lunch specials also available. I think that when you have a sizzling plate of fajitas in front of you ... there is a tendency to always believe that the fajitas are somehow "amazing". Well ..., they were not .., they were under seasoned bland and the beef strips were small and tough. Not at all what I was expecting. The show is much nicer than the plate of food. Before this happened, the waiter mistakenly put a plate of carne asada in front of me ... this platter looked spectacular and honestly I wish I had chosen that instead of the fajitas .. however it could potentially have the same problem of all looks and no substance .., So ... I'd take on this restaurant cautiously .... And choose your dish wisely ... hopefully you will choose one that is up to par. read more

I wanted to give it a try and met a friend for lunch this past weekend. It sure was a delicious! The restaurant is inside a plaza and there is plenty of inside seating and some outside seating. We were greeted right away and sat right away on a busy lunchtime rush. We got chips and salsa before we were even seated abd our server came right away to take our order. We had to tell him to give us some time since we had not looked at the menu yet from how fast service was! We ended ordering the same thing and it was our server's suggestion Camarones (shrimp) al Mezcal, they were delicious! They came with broccoli, spinach and a light cheese sauce with a small side salad and rice. Those came out pretty quick. The staff is friendly, attentive, taking care of tables on a busy time and checking on people often. We will definitely be back! read more

After attending a powwow my friends and I decided to head to El Mezcal on a recommendation of a friend who went there for lunch the prior day. Apparently this place is a hot spot to hang out and eat as when we got there they were busy inside and out but luckily they had a table that could sit all of us. We used the other entrance door and immediately sat down. The place was bumpin'...music, basketball game on over the bar, dozens of wait staff running around. Seems cool so far. I got the Perfect Margarita to drink (Hornitos, Grand Marnier, Amaretto, Sour Mix) while the others got water and tea. Yup, I ended up looking like the drunk. The drink was good. I needed to stir it up as all the liquor was on the bottom. It started to hit me fast so I ordered quickly. For food I chose the Enchiladas Chipotle (1 chicken, 1 beef, and 1 cheese enchilada, with melted chipotle cheese on top, rice, tomato, lettuce, sour cream). I ate their chips and salsa while waiting on my food and I really liked their salsa verde. The enchiladas were good but I think I should have gone with the tacos. My friend beside me got the Tacos Al Pastor and while they looked simple, they looked so much flavorful than my enchiladas. Maybe when I come down here next year I'll stop in and get them. read more

Wow! Our new favorite restaurant! We just got through with a great meal! Definitely recommend the custom Guacamole! 100%! I can't wait to bring our family & friends to this restaurant. The really amazing thing is that we went on a Tuesday night & the food was amazing & FRESH! Service was phenomenal! The place was packed but we had no wait. We waited longer getting a parking spot. Once inside I saw why. The staff were right there cleaning the tables, serving food, getting refills!! It is a great team! The 1 & only negative I have is the noise. The acoustics are bad. I had the Molcajete which was filled with multiple proteins and it came with a side of beans, rice guacamole, & sour cream. It was very tasty and it is worth every buck. This place seems okay for family get together and Mexican food fix. It's decorated nice and the employees are nice. The place is clean and serves alcohol and has a big menu! Only thing it's kinda of weird to complain about but there is absolute no cell phone service there, which if ur eating alone can be annoying. Food: we'll have I had better? Yes I had worse? Yes.... This place is good for what you get and the price, is it the best Mexican food I have had? Nope but I would go back. I got the fish tacos which are okay.... Got the steak asada tacos which are ok.... We ate here for lunch. We were seated quickly, chips and salsa the minute we sat down. Food was amazing. Restaurant was clean, tables were clean. Now the Negative: so they have a guacamole cart that goes to every table, cool idea, we were served a good sized portion. So Im smart enough to know Guacamole is never complimentary, but there were no prices but a small sign that said " I work for tips" Ok no problem. But then when I got my bill it said fresh guacamole $9.99. The item is not even on the menu, just would of been nice if they were up front. But I still highly recommend this restaurant. 100 times better then the one in the center of mount dora. But -1 star for not being up front about the price. read more

My Mexican dad said that this was the best Mexican place in the area so of course we had to drive the 40 minutes when I came to visit to check it out. The drinks are MASSIVE, alcoholic and non alcoholic alike. The horchata I got was the size of a German Beer boot. My mom got the mango margarita and while it was also huge, I wasn't that big of a fan. To eat I got the texicana fajitas which could easily feed 2-3 people. The shrimp was especially delicious, too good because it didn't leave room for dessert. My dad got the chori pollo and my mom got the carnitas. read more

The service was on point, the place was somewhat packed for a Sunday (which is a great sign) and the food was stellar! We have been to El Mezcal with our lunch group on several occasions. Until yesterday, it was all good. Service is fast, food is good. Atmosphere nice. But yesterday it started off bad as the music was extremely loud. Several people at our table mentioned it, so I asked the server if it would be possible to turn it down a bit. She responded that the music was fine and they were unable to turn it down. Yeah, I call BS on that but whatever. Then my chili relleno was so tough, I couldn't cut it with a knife, and totally inedible. Sent it back and then received a partial poblano pepper in return. Unbelievable. We will not be going back. I have heard about this place from many people. First time trying and confirmed all I have heard was true! This restaurant is located on the end of a shopping plaza. There is indoor and outdoor dining. The staff are friendly and very attentive. Our server Diana did a great job. We started with the Chori-queso $7.50. It has great flavors and is a generous portion. It was delicious! The chips and salsa are very good. If you like guacamole, there is someone pushing a cart who will make it right at your table! The Birria tacos $15.50 come with 3 and are served with rice & beans. The sauce is especially flavorful and really makes the tacos! The quesadilla fajita $13.99 was packed full and served with lettuce, sour cream, guacamole and rice. Everything we had tasted great and cooked well. I have never been so upset or disgusted in a restaurant in my life. I came here expecting to enjoy some good Mexican food, but instead, I witnessed one of the most heartless things I've ever seen. While I was eating, a mother came in with her disabled child and instead of showing any kind of compassion or basic human decency, the staff actually made her leave. They spoke to her in a rude, dismissive tone, clearly making her feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. You could see the hurt and embarrassment on her face. It was heartbreaking. I don't care how good the food is no restaurant deserves anyone's business if they treat people like that. Watching that poor mom and her child get pushed out was sickening. This place clearly has zero respect for families, inclusion, or basic kindness. If you believe in treating people with dignity, do not spend your money here. Management should be ashamed, and I truly hope they face consequences for how they handled that situation. No one deserves to be treated that way. read more

And let me just start off by saying im young and have a disabled child . Friday mid day around 12ish i went out for lunch to my used to be favorite restaurant El Mezcal in mount dora . I used to come here for drinks and appetizers as again i say its not easy being a mother of a disabled child . My son is 7 and full of energy super sweet and friendly . We sat down and i decided to take my son a toy to distract him and keep him calm . My son was just being boy playing with his toy . Not bothering any other customers or employees from there . When out of nowhere the waiter decided to come on over and said sorry we have a complaint , you have to leave. as I was paying my check I felt tears were going to come out of my eyes because I felt that my son was mistreated or misjudged by people that don't know the situation that he went through. No child chooses to be the way they are nor a parent chooses their son to be disabled. But as a former server I found this restaurant to be very disrespectful to kick somebody out because of a disabled child. Not only that unfortunately this lady came over to me and said what is wrong with your child? is he sick? Or does he have a problem? Or does he just need a spanking? I felt embarrassed by the way she said that to me an older lady who knows nothing about my son . I hope nobody else has to go through the same situation but this restaurant definitely lost one of their paying customers . read more

Thought it could've been a ton better, my fajita burrito was all peppers and onions, the shrimp were undercooked and the flour tortilla fell apart immediately. The rice tasted like the yellow sazon packet. Nothing special at all. read more

This is behind the Waffle House at the end of the shopping center. They have a covered patio at the front. The inside has a lot of natural light with high back booths and a brick bar in the center. Chips and salsa are nothing great. I had a chicken taco salad and they let me swap the sour cream for guacamole. The actual salad portion had red cabbage and huge strips of carrots. That was very odd for a taco salad. The cabbage was chewy and did not seem right for a salad like that. The chicken was very chewy and did not have good flavor. The shell was not good either. I would say it's one of the worst taco salads I've ever had. The server was nice and attentive. They serve Pepsi products. I did not care for their tea, it seemed weak. I'd say this is a hard pass for me. read more
