Checked this spot out this past Mexican Independence Day due to the good reviews. It's located in the Zona Rio area, which is an area packed with very well-regarded, highly-rated restaurants in TJ. The restaurant is located directly behind the TGI Friday's on General Rodolfo Sánchez Taboada Boulevard. Got there around 1:30 pm, not too long after they opened. Not many people in there, though that wasn't surprising given that it was a Monday and a federal holiday. One thing I love about Mexican fine dining restaurants is they tend to be very lax on dress code; I was dressed casually but that wasn't a problem. I don't think they technically have a dress code, though a comparable fine dining steak restaurant in the U.S. might not have let me in given that I was casually (although neatly) dressed. Was nearly empty so was seated immediately. Waiter was an older male who spoke pretty good English. Was brought out Acqua Panna spring water while I looked over the menu. I first ordered a frozen strawberry margarita (209 pesos or roughly $11). The margarita was solid and tasty. For my meal I decided to go with the petit ribeye (300g ribeye), which came with a complimentary side (chose mashed potatoes) and the soup of the day (potatoes and cream). The petit ribeye was 1389 pesos (~$73 USD). While waiting for the main meal, they brought out bread and then the soup (which came with crackers). Really liked the soup. The bread was perfectly fine, though nothing special. They provided standard crackers but there were also some very large, circular crackers they provided that I didn't really like. After finishing the soup and bread they brought out the ribeye and potatoes. Both were very good, the ribeye in particular was well-cooked and tasty. Not the best ribeye I've had in my life or anything like that, but it was solid. I also liked the spicy sauce and pico condiments that came with the meal. The ribeye and margarita came to 1598 pesos total; after tip the total bill came out to around $100 USD. While I enjoyed the meal, I don't think I'd return to El Grill at that price point. I've had better steak/ribeye meals for less even in the U.S. and had better meals for much less in TJ. But the meal here was good and I'd still recommend for anyone who's never been, just as a place to check out. The waiter and customer service overall was great and very attentive. read more

Came here for Father's Day and was really impressed with the food and the service. Our waiter was very knowledgable and friendly and we wanted for nothing the entire meal. First off, the basket of fresh-baked bread they give you is straight up HEAVEN. I could eat 10 whole loaves. It's amazing. We also shared the beef tartar and the cheese plate, both of which were delicious. I got the Truffle Capellini, which I loved. They shave fresh truffle on top! YUM. The other two in my party shared a steak, which our server was super gracious and accommodating about, even offering to split it in the kitchen and present it on two plates instead of making us cut it in half on arrival. I'm pretty sure we were the only table, but customers continued to pour in until the time we left around 8:30. We had: - Iceberg wedge (delicious) - Chilean seabass (cooked perfectly, ~$40 US) - Tomahawk for 2 (which I ordered rare, but came out closer to medium rare, ~$140 US) They have a decent wine selection. Only two mezcals on the menu, which was a bit disappointing. Decent dessert selection of about 6 options, but the last few bites of the Tomahawk did me in. Between the three dishes we ordered, a few nice tequilas, glasses of wine and digestifs, I managed to drop just under $400 with tip. Being from Chicago I have been to some of the finest, and must say El Grill has just placed amongst the top I have been around the globe. Very nice ambiance. This place feels like a classic steakhouse with interesting pictures of golden era celebrities. Service is top notch here with waiters making sure every detail is perfect for you. You really feel pampered while you're here. The food was delicious. The only downside was that it was extremely pricey. The total for two people was over $200 with no alcohol. Visited the restaurant it's a nice environment and good for a drink or a nice romantic atmosphere but not my favorite . I wasn't impressed by the food and it was extremely overpriced. This restaurant was recommended by a really good friend of mine and he always is on point with this food however on this particular restaurant it was awful. We started off with some drinks everything was fine the waiter was not a friendly very straight to the point and when I ask questions regarding suggestions he was short. We started off with appetizers. The shrimp and octopus play appetizers not only was overpriced, it was very small they had no more than six shrimps and it was just sauté in butter along with some slices of octopus. I checked the bill I believe this was close to $20 completely not worth it. Secondly we ordered the mushroom plate appetizer which to my surprise was possibly the best plate of the night very tasteful and the price was not that bad. We moved on to the entrée we ordered a T-bone steak for two people mac & cheese and also mashed potatoes, The mac & cheese was watery, the mashed potatoes Were small and I had the same consistency as KFC mashed potatoes and finally the steak which they charged $60 was not worth it. The bill came to $160 for two people on a dinner that was not worth it at all. We ended up taking the steak home and giving it to our Uber driver. It's an average place, average steaks, appetizers overall too expensive even if it were in the US. I do appreciate the outside deck is pet friendly and for such an expensive place was a nice surprise to have that option. The waiters are very attentive, polite and professional the overall atmosphere is formal just can't recommend because the prices are overinflated for what you get. Food and service was amazing! The waiter knew his drinks, wine and food. He suggested an amazing fish called Branzino for an appetizer and it was out of this world! In addition he suggested the rib eye and I mentioned to him my concern that every time I have had a rib eye in Mexico it is not that good and has a lot of fat more than usual and he mentioned that they offer prime beef from the US and to try it so I did and I was not disappointed! The was my first time at el steak but not the last time! Oh and one side note this is not a cheap Mexican restaurant that serves chips and salsa and tacos and burritos! Anything you order should be topnotch, My favorite things arguably are the Seabass, lobster, tuna, and New York. Some of the best tacos also. Also very Expensive. Bad experience and way to price for the service they provide, we were charge for 2 full dinners, I was k with a $70 dollar lobster and 1 steak on the side, $170.00 for 1 grease steak and a dry lobster and the worse was the server, grumpy old men, left a small tip of $150 pesos and he approach me that I should leave him $350 pesos for 10% tip, it's not mandatory but the food and the service was not pleasant. Been there a few times. Two things that's stand out. It's the most expensive steak house I have ever been to and I believe their steak is choice and not prime. Steak seemed to be hard to cut into. El Grill is the place for steaks in Tijuana. It is modeled after high end steak houses in the United States, like Fleming's, the Palm or Ruth Chris'. It even serves USDA Prime meats! The restaurant is located in an unassuming building which it shares with another famous restaurant, La Querencia. Surprisingly, there is no valet, and one simply drives into the small parking lot and parks oneself [there is a 20 Peso charge to the attendant who will raise the gate when you leave]. There is an exceptional welcome and refined service by Miguel, who greets me with a smile and a handshake and leads me to my usual booth below the black and white photograph of Chicago's Wrigley Building. Other tables are set below vintage photographs of New York and Beverly Hills. There is dark paneling on the walls and brass chandeliers above, lending a soft glow to the room. A grand piano in the corner awaits the pianist, who arrives at 8:00 p.m. Miguel showed me some new wines which are now available, and I selected the Clos d'Arts "Expression" Casa Magoni, which is a "mezcla" [mixture] of four grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. After ordering the wine, I settled on the meal: Of course there was a medium rare New York Steak, perfectly cooked, with a side a thinly-sliced zucchini and carrots, as well as French Fries [at an extra charge]. After dinner, Miguel concocted at the table my favorite Carajillo: A large snifter with espresso, Licor 43 from Spain, ice and orange slices floating on top. I went in for lunch and everything about this place was 5 stars. The ambience is sophisticated but it doesn't feel like an intimidating scene even if you walk in for a casual meal. It really feels just like any quality steakhouse in the US. I was immediately greeted and helped by multiple servers who attentively made sure that I was well served throughout my entire meal. They were particularly proactive about helping me pick from the menu and I appreciated that. The food was also very good. I had the Petit Cut Rib Eye which came with soup and potato sides. My wife and I went here in October, ambience is very good and not packed. I am totally fine paying over US $200 equivalent where both of us bought rib eye with lobster and some cocktails. The steak though was unimpressive to day the least. I asked for medium but it was well done and was salty. The steak close to bone was very cooked. So yeah please do not compare against ruths Chris or mastros. This is more comparable to rib eye you get from CPK which is actually pretty good with their arugula sides. read more

My dining experience at El Grill was excellent. The food was all cooked to perfection. The service was first class, as was the decor and ambiance. This upscale steakhouse is on par with any Ruth's Chris, Capital Grill, Fleming's, or Morton's (or other high end steakhouse) in the US. The only thing preventing me from giving 5 stars was the price. With wine and cocktails, you will easily spend $125 - $150 USD per person (our dinner for 5 was about $150pp). Without question, this was the most expensive meal that I have had in Tijuana in recent months. If you are looking for a great steak (all USDA Prime) with outstanding service and a wonderful clubby steakhouse atmosphere, then you will enjoy El Grill. Hands down, the best steak ever!! The meat was so tender and juicy. The service is beyond amazing. To begin they show you the different type of meat cuts so you can visualize the size. I also had some stuffed shrimp with lobster wrapped in beacon. They were mouthwatering. Honestly, you have to share with someone because they give you so much food worth every peso. The only think that was a tad bit overbearing was the service. Personally, I don't like someone watching me the whole time. I much rather enjoy my food without people staring. Went there last night for the first time with my husband. We sat outside, it was very nice and romantic with the dim lights. Service was great. The waiter came often to see if we needed anything. I really liked that the waiter let us know that certain plates were big enough to split and share instead of just letting us order not knowing the amount they serve you. That was nice since the plates aren't cheap. If it's only 2 people and you choose the cheapest plates, you will still end up spending close to if not over $1000 pesos. Like I said it's not cheap at all. But that being said, you definitely get your money's worth in the service, amount of food they serve you and the FLAVOR was delicious. So you get what you pay for, totally worth it! Another thing I liked was that they bring out the cuts of meat for you to see and wow they are humongous! What can I say about a meal where everything was that amazing. Words are not enough. From the very first salsa and chips, an amazing mixture of everything that is good about salsa to the meal finale porterhouse, a steak that made the angels weep with joy, nothing can be said that is not praise. Even the mashed potato and broccoli sides left the gods of Olympus without words to describe their joy - mostly because their mouths were never not full of delight. If ever there was a reason for the angels to fall from grace and leave the heavens- besides the obvious Beelzebub ones - this food would be it. And lets not forget the spicy Serrano margarita, yet another reason to justify a stint in Hell. What more can be said? Food worth killing for; and I am arming myself as I write this. This place is IT, you can never tell by the outside looks , there is a reason why looks can be deceiving I guess. When you step inside you feel like you are in an upscale NYC steakhouse . The Frank Sinatra music on the background compliments your dining experience . The place is small, yet not loud . Now let's get to the food, OUTSTANDING . The only place in TJ that serves prime beef, they bring the steaks in front of you before you buy one. Beef carpaccio is a must try and their Sea bass and Bronzino are not only fresh but they are prepared and presented it will wow you. Last but not the least , service is first rate.
