We asked to move outside to catch the game, and while the server accommodated us, it was clear he wasn't too thrilled about it. We started with drinks, which were actually great; so good that we ended up ordering three rounds plus shots! For appetizers, we had the grilled bone marrow and empanadas, followed by a New York strip loin (recommended by the server) with creamy spinach and truffle fries. The empanadas and fries were delicious, but the steak was completely bland, definitely not worth the price. We asked for a spicy salsa, and the server brought one out "on the house," which was amazing. I even asked to take the leftover salsa home. Now, here's where things turned shady. Throughout the meal, the server kept upselling us on everything; which we didn't mind since we were having a good time. But when the bill came, we noticed he charged us for the leftover salsa that he originally said was complimentary! It wasn't about the money, but the principle. We asked him to remove the charge and told him to forget the salsa. The manager noticed what happened, took care of the charge, and even packed the salsa with our leftovers. The server, however, never returned to the table after that. The ambiance and cleanliness were fine, but overall, the experience left a bad taste. VERDICT: I will not be coming back. read more

We had an amazing dinner experience during our first trip to El Campero Restaurante. The atmosphere is upbeat but relaxed. The music is not too loud. It was easy to converse. Both the mocktails and the cocktails were delightfully tasty. Our waiter Fernando was exceptional, going as far as to bring us the various cuts of meat when we have questions about what to order. Given I had weight loss surgery a few months back, I can't finish a full meal, so my co-worker and I shared and chose the Filet Mignon as well as the Pampera Salad. The filet mignon was cooked to perfection...it was wrapped with caramelized bacon! When taking a bite, the meat would be soft and would melt in your mouth. We tried the other cuts, Arrachera & Rib Eye. By far, the Arrachera was the best cut of the night! We tried this place out bc of the Yelp review. The gps took us in a big circle! No parking you need to valet park. The sangria is delicious! They are not stingy with the alcohol. The cappuccino has a nice flavor to it. The meat plate is dinner for 3- very juicy, delicious and tender! I can not complain. The empanadas were Good but not my favorite. The dough was a little off, kind weird taste. The service is ok. our server did his job, not the talkative type. Meat is of exceptional quality even before preparation so the simple preparation just adds to the quality of the meal. Have eaten here several times over the years and it is always exceptional. Service is excellent and there is a huge variety of choices, you cannot go wrong whatever you decide on for your meal. Excellent appetizers as well. To be honest I have never left enough room to try their desserts but am sure they must be just as good as everything else on the menu. Excellent wine list and excellent cocktails. One of my favorite restaurants in the Playa del Rio area, where all the high end restaurants are. They offer both outside and inside seating, and the smell of the meat grilling really draw you in. Inside, they have the grill on full display and the griller preparing the meats. The meat is cooked to order, although like many Mexican bbq restaurants I try they tend to undercook the meat to my liking, so I usually order medium instead of medium rare and it comes out great. Service and food quality is excellent here, upon sitting down the give you a digestif, their boiling hot beef broth in a little shot glass. It's amazing and really whets your appetite. There's a lot of variety on the menu and resembles the best of any Argentinian restaurant I've been to. For the appetizer I highly recommend the combination platter, or Combinación de mollejas, chorizo argentino, chistorra y morcilla which includes sweetbread (fried pancreas) and chorizo among others. For the entree I usually go with a rib eye steak, although there are different varieties of meats and fish. Really enjoy my experience each time I'm here and I've brought others as well. Not quite the perfect Argentinian but a solid good one. The octopus appetizer was amazing. For steaks I'd recommend Bife Chorizo (Rib-Eye) for a flavorful experience. Other cuts are good as well and have to remember that they are from Mexican beef - and the flavor is different. Avoid the chistorra since it's too thick and the taste is not what you would expect from a traditional Argentinian place. Service is top notch like in most Mexican places. Decor has a nice rustic feeling. May come back again when in the mood for Mexican beef. read more

The service is outstanding, the staff is friendly and ready to help, the environment is adequate and confortable, we asked for 3 different cuts and portobello mushroom. The "Filete" was very very good, the falda (sort of arrechera) was ok but the RibEye was uneatable, well some part of it were ok but it had way to much fat, we end up leaving more than half on the plate. The Portobellos were delicious Not sure if I recommend it because the service is great but some foods are not. The quality is not nearly that of El Grill but it's a good place for Cuts if you are on a budget. Take it from a guy who was born and raised in an Argentinian-Italian family in the provinces, grew up eating beef at least once a day, and studied, graduated and lived in Buenos Aires for 32 years... I usually make concessions for Argentine restaurants out of the country, because I know how hard it is sometimes to get the ingredients and the right way of cooking (according to Argentinian rules, that is...). Terrible empanadas.... Chorizos with guacamole, really??? Imagine serving in a Mexican restaurant beef tacos with curry, and lentil soup; tasty, probably, but definitely not Mexican.... Where is the chimichurri? Beef consommé with pieces of beef I mistook for pieces of wood, that hard they were... Please, get it right. Argentinian food is not that complicated; is about beef and pasta, and some traditional desserts (flan, "postre de vigilante": hard cheese and quince or sweet potato jam, and some others...). We eat the beef with nothing on it; some sophisticated ones may add pepper, but is usually only salt. We may add salads ("mixta": tomatoes, lettuce and onions) and also French fries ("papas fritas", better with a provenzal salsa). Get a recipe for a good milanesa, better, milanesa a la napolitana, and do not napalm the chinchulines. Pasta is big in Argentina; all sort of pasta, from spaghetti ("fideos") to tagliatelle, fettuccine, gnocchi, cannelloni, etc., and so it is pizza. Get an Argentinian advisor, or (cheaper option) send a spy to La Fonda, Origen Argentino or El Tucumano, all great Argentinian restaurants a few blocks from yours in TJ. Then send the spy across the border to Villa Roma in Laguna Hills (amazing "milanesa a caballo con papas fritas", another Argentinian classic). Service was good. PS: Granted, in Northern Argentina you may find tamales, humitas, locro, and other corn-based foods as well.... There is not such a thing as an Argentinian empanada; every province has its own, empanadas salteñas (Salta province) are different from empanadas tucumanas (Tucuman province) or empanadas santiagueñas (Santiago province), and so on... and we are only talking about beef empanadas. Went here last night with some friends. The place has a higher end feel. When you first sit down they give you bread and soup. Both were very good. I ordered a beef empanada and ravioli. The empanada has lots of beef and was very filling. The pasta was good but nothing amazing. My boyfriend ordered the single portion board with the steak medallions. The portion was pretty small but the meat was very tender. When they brought the check, they added a charge of 20% for a service fee. Been to Argentina many times and I love their people, wine and BEEF! To my knowledge, Argentine beef is still not exported to USA/Mexico so the taste of the beef will always be different. That being said, there are many "Argentine style" restaurants and El Campero is one of the best I've visited (several times). Whenever I golf at the nearby TJ Country club, I stop here to get my beef fix. The restaurant's decor is inviting and the staff is gracious and attentive. For starters, I ordered the Octopus, sweetbreads, empanadas and steak tartare. For the main course, I chose the Angus "rib-eye for two" which was cooked med-rare and perfectly seasoned with salt/pepper only, no sauce. Add a bottle of wine from Guadalupe Valley and my dinner was complete. This was quite a lot of food for two people but I wanted to sample as many dishes as possible. Will try the mixed grill sampler next time. Best of all, the prices were reasonable! Will be back. read more

Ended up also getting a sausage pizza that had a very unique flavor (but in a good way). Cadillac margaritas were strong and they do serve bottled water. They first tried to give me a pitcher but I told them I ordered a large glass. In fact they confirmed my order before they brought the pitcher. They thought I don't speak Spanish but I told them I didn't order a "jarro ". Then the steak was about the size of my screen on my iPhone 8! I know that a ribeye can lose up to 30% of it's weight during the cooking process but let's do the math: 220g = 7.76 ounces or a little less than 1/2 lb. 70% times 7.76 ounces = 5.34 ounces or 1/3 lb. I know what 1/3 lb looks like and it isn't the size of the screen on my iPhone! I took an Uber straight to Taqueria Franc and bought two carne asada tacos because I was still hungry!
