It's no coincidence that El Corazon means "the heart" in Spanish and that this sits in the middle of the city. In a world of waste and consumerism we all know we should be better to the earth and treat the land better, so it's nice to see something truly organic going on here. I usually just come here for the free mulch (load yourself from the first piles). Bring your own shovels as the one or two they might let you borrow are almost always in use. I recently had a much bigger job (a few cubic yards) to do the hillside behind my house. With Fire season on us and erosion being an issue for me we decided against the free stuff which tends to be basic and less resistant in all aspects. There are all kinds of mulch from various prices of cheap to cheaper. This is where they get you, it's in the transportation. If you have it delivered it's alot, but it's still cheaper than Home Depot. If you are able to borrow or use a truck it's a great deal. They don't really measure it, but a tractor bucket full fits about a 5 foot truck bed or what they call (cubic yard). Oceanside residents get different rates on delivery. Needing to do half an acre i got a few loads for $12 each. We tarped it to make clean up easier. For most peoples needs self serve is great, but for most landscapers or doing front and back yards paying is probably best. They have a massive dump truck that they use for delivery which seems high priced, but when you factor in the mulch you could landscape multiple houses and share the delivery cost. Your truck will get dirty coming up here because of the wind and they spray the dirt road for dust. Sometimes when they are doing certain mulches during the year it's a little funky, but that smell extends beyond the facility. Don't forget to tip the staff here. Sure it's city sponsored, but it's still a service. read more

Sadly this company grinds toxic plastic trash into several of their mulch products! This is distributed everywhere. Our landscape was clean. You can imagine my shock when I walked around the mulch to find trash. At first we thought it could be cleaned up - After a 5 hour effort we decided that it would take a lifetime to pick up every bit of plastic. Today we began having over an acre of this toxic trash raked out! Someday there will be young kids playing out there and I cannot have left this trash for them! I have reported the situation to CARecycle, State Environmental Committee and City of Oceanside. Look elsewhere for compost and mulch! read more

Compost, mulch, and liquid fertilizer ware all free because we lived in Oceanside. How cool is that. There were 2 girls working at the site-Very knowledgeable and helpful. Open 6 days a week. Very convenient. Easy access. Close to home. My car stunk a bit for awhile but free compost v. buying at the store, no comparison. Store compost smells also. We didn't have a truck so we took small Costco boxes and containers. Filled them and loaded them up in my mini hatchback. It's good to be Oceanside residents/homeowners. read more

Wow - what a gem! We recently had El Corazon deliver and apply (via a blower truck) 12 cubic yards of mulch. They were clean, neat, thorough, and on time. The mulch makes our property look great and has so many benefits for our soil and plants. And the barren areas don't get muddy during the rains so we don't have to clean our dogs paws after they go out! We also go here regularly with some 5-gallon buckets and large bags and fill them with mulch or compost. Even the small amount we can put in our little car still saves money over buying commercial products (since as Oceanside residents we can get certain varieties of compost and mulch free IF we load it ourselves). Mary, the owner, is a lovely person and clearly takes pride in her business. If you have ANY needs for mulch, compost, or getting rid of yard waste (leaves and small branches), El Corazon is your answer! read more

this place has really gone down hill. seems to be run by a bunch of drag-ass kids. no customer service, they really don't seem to want your money. I've been going there for 15 years getting loads for our community garden, but honestly its just not worth the hassle any more. the last few loads have been full of trash and ground up plastic, and seemed to burn all the beds it was mixed in to. read more

We moved to Oceanside two years ago and didn't discover this place until recently. What a cool deal! Our yard and plants are really benefiting from this service! We are really happy to have these guys here doing what they do... And we hope they can keep it up for a long time! Why doesn't every city in the world implement this type of awesome facility? This could probably help a lot of our environmental problems! Well maybe not all but it could help. Found this little gem while you guessed it gardening! I love how they are so supportive of everyone having their own little garden with veggies and fruits to grow of their own. They give you free dirt, mulch, and even compost tea, and then get this, on the lower side that takes ya up over yonder, they give you rocks! It may not seem such a big deal to many, but when you start tilling on mother nature, all those are like gold! Also you have to be an Oside resident to receive the goods for free, but if not I hear it's a minuscule fee for them. read more

I finally had enough of endlessly pulling weeds that were fighting for territory under my trees and plants...having mulch brought in and spread by the guys (Oscar and Jose) using the mulch application truck was like a miracle...mulch was spread on a steep hillside and they did an outstanding job putting it exactly where it needed to go. They were accommodating, hard working and neat! They even pulled the mulch back from all the tree trunks so I got a professional looking job. I cant say enough good things about the company from the estimate to the application...top notch products too! Worth every penny! read more

Great Place to pick up all kinds of Mulch. They have many different grades. Humic, Orchard, etc. Its all free. They even have wood chips and wood mulch in many different sizes They compost everything so that the natural heat created kills any weeds and seeds so you are protected this way. One thing is that I do not use their stuff for is vegetable planting as it is collected from the town and you never know who has used weed killer etc. For vegetable and fruit trees I buy the certified organic from Lowes or Home Depot. read more

Highly recommended for mulch. You can drive up into the old landfill area and Yelp's address on the maps is actually correct. Up on top of the landfill is a tiny temporary office. Person on staff was kind and directed me to someone else who was the mulch expert. Got the run-down on all the types of mulch available, about 10 varieties ranging from $10-$20 per cubic yard. I opted for Everbloom mulch, $10, that is a black mulch blend with compost. Smelled and looked great, not stinky in my opinion. Delivery was $90 or so to a nearby address, so I ordered more mulch than I really needed as the additional $10-$20 for a lot more mulch was negligible. Ordering, paying, and setting up delivery I did all over the phone calling the number I was given from a pamphlet at the physical office location. Person that delivered the mulch was on time and did a great job. Very helpful and friendly. Yelp makes it seem that mulch here is free. It isn't normally. But on, I believe, the first and third Saturdays of the month (perhaps it's second and fourth Saturdays), mulch is free - but only from select piles with mulch types that will vary. You have to bring your own truck and they will load it for you. Pretty awesome. You can also come up to this location to buy "compost tea", which is cheap and they will just fill up large buckets that you bring yourself. Seems to be a great natural fertilizer that also hydrates your plants. Overall, the staff know what they are talking about, the prices are super cheap, and the product is top notch. BRING YOUR TRUCK, A SHOVEL AND GET FREE MULCH AND MANURE. This is one of the few places that has free mulch. All the employees are friendly here and its never very crowded so you don't have to offload on top of someone else. The rate is very reasonable too. We just paid $11 for 560 lbs of branches and brush. read more

Great place to get free or inexpensive mulch, depending on if you are Oceanside resident or not. I would recommend to use a face mask when loading compost, as the dust is very fine and caused me some lung distress the next day (I did not use a mask, but wish I had). read more

Picked up some "worm tea" for my roses and some mulch for my garden! Very interesting facility, love how they recycle our green waste for the betterment of the community. I found some info online about this place, my husband and I went expecting to pay for a load of mulch and to our surprise we got a whole truck load (nearly 4 cubic yards) for only $2! As Oceanside residents, I guess the mulch is pretty much free...a big tractor dumped the load in our truck bed and we were off...took about 10 minutes total. With the exception of some small plastic debris (like bottle caps etc) the mulch was very clean and just the color/texture I was looking for. They have a lot of options to choose from too! read more

This is the best place to buy compost, mulch, ... that I have found. They have a great selection, high quality products, excellent customer service as well as great prices. Once we needed so much mulch that we had them use one of their big trucks that blows the mulch on to your yard. It was so fast and efficient and we didn't have to use a wheelbarrow or spread it. We have been very happy customers for over 20 years. Recently though there was a mix up with our order. Mary, the owner, immediately went above and beyond to make it right. Mary, as well as her staff, are extremely knowledgable of the technical capabilities and features of their entire product line. For Oceanside residents, what they have for free varies, but they seem to always have free compost and an entry-level mulch. You just need to sign in and then fill up your containers. For the better quality landscape level mulch, you have to pay a competitive price. read more

After my six bags of Lowes mulch didn't go too far and upon reading the reviews here, I headed over to El Corazon, ready for them to load me up with some mulch. Thankfully it was free to me as an Oceanside resident, but unfortunately free meant they wouldn't load it for me. Bring your truck or big trash can AND a shovel or rake and get yourself some great mulch. If you want a particular type of mulch (like landscape mulch), you might want to call ahead. They didn't have brown mulch like I was supplementing from Lowes, so I shoveled in a bunch of their 3" mix as I could along with a nice finer mulch with compost mixed in. Works great to get that 2" mulch covering recommended for water conservation, then I covered it with the "pretty" lowes mulch. Lots of work to shovel into and out of the truck, but a great product from El Corazon! I'm going back for compost tea next! read more

Based on the great reviews and $0 price tag for Oside residents, I expected this place to be packed on a Saturday late morning and was pleasantly surprised when I was able to walk right in to the office to sign in and back right up to the mulch piles. Another reviewer commented that the materials are only free on 1st and 3rd Saturdays--that's true if you want help loading it but loading it yourself is free if you show proof of Oceanside residence. I picked up mulch, compost, and compost tea and all appear to be high quality (the middle of the compost pile was actually still steaming it was so hot!). I will offer my wisdom and you can research this yourself but know that this place is ran by soil scientist people and their process of composting gets rid of any harmful additives (weed killers and pesticides used by residents ect...) that may of previously been in the material. Just a tidbit of information as well just look at most weed killers on their labels and you will see a warning saying that a lot more product is required to work on composted materials since it is so much less effective. I used tons of the humic and tons of the mulch EVERYWHERE but do your own research to truly enjoy REAL knowledge that will carry your gardening skills to EPIC heights. read more

Nothing beats getting more organic matter back into the soil.....you may haul your own - they have several kinds of mulch - Forest, Garden, Bedding, Landscape, etc and mountains of compost. The first and third Saturdays of each month are "give-a-way" days - compost, mulch, whatever for $2 a yard ( regularly it's Twenty-something, and $8/yd if you buy ten yards, I think )....bring your pickup or small trailer and something to cover it with and you're good to go. One of my favorite places in Oceanside! The product they offer is an amazing quality. I have probably put over 100 yards of mulch and compost in my yard. I've heard people assume it's low quality because of the price (free). However, one Sunday I ran out of my "free" stuff and finished the project with expensive bagged compost from Home Depot.
