The sign said they have been here since the 80s. Anyway because it's a small nursery and open 7 days a week, it's a good idea to call if you're planning to make a long journey to visit just to make sure they haven't stepped out. It's usually fine but I see people on other reviews have come in from far away without calling and it's just a good idea to call if it's a mom and pop nursery and you have a long drive. My favorite fruit was white sapote, cherimoya, the bazillions of types of guavas they have, ice cream bean was delicious, and I never knew palms have delicious fruit (what????). I come about twice a year from San Diego and as San Diego nurseries go, this place is in a league of its own. I even just like walking around in there to relax cause it's almost like a fruit botanical garden. And some of the small stuff is very affordable Highly recommend if you have a few hours free to explore this place. It's a great nursery -- kinda like the Garden of Eden!

It can be overwhelming because of the large selections. Every trees appeared to be thriving and healthy, with many already have fruits. The place was big so I was clueless where to begin. Thank God Gio found me. He is so knowledgeable, professional, kind, funny, and has lots of patience to deal with a picky and curious person like me. He takes his time to show me around. I was lucky to try many different selections of fruits, some I can compared to store bought and many I haven't heard of. The fruits you get from the nursery tasted so much different than the store bought one, more fresh and flavorful in my opinions. I ended up buying a couple trees and am looking forward to buy more in the future. When asked if the issue was if they were out of stock, she replied "oh we can't tell the difference until they bloom." Yet over half of the plants are unlabeled. It lead to us aimlessly wandering around to see if they had a specific variety labeled. Overall, why a vast selection, it's sorta useless if you can't help customers identify them. Very disappointed I wasted my time, Saturday and the gas to leave empty handed. It may be a different story during the week or if we had a different attendant but overall, not worth my effort.

He claimed running their own report after I described one already done by 811, granted them authority to plant seven large tree root systems directly inside a high-voltage and high-pressure natural gas public utility corridor, in direct violation of San Diego Municipal Code safety separation buffers TREE PLANTING AND STAKING SDL-101ATTACHMENT 13. https://www.sandiego.gov/sites/default/files/legacy/publicworks/pdf/edocref/standarddraw/2015standarddrawings/sdl/sdl-101.pdf. This "landscape designer" sugggested that Palo Verdes were the best trees and that they had zero root problems that may interfere with the FIVE underground utilities running on my property that included gas, electric, drainage, AT&T, and Charter Communications. He said he can always make trees "fit." Fit his pocketbook is what he meant. Quite the contrary: Palo Verdes grow up to 25 feet wide and just as tall. My lot is 5500 sf in a tract home community. What landscape desinger in their right mind would put in a mini forest on a standard lot size in San Diego next to live wires and gas lines. It's criminal. This predatory trade practice shifts massive structural liability onto an unsuspecting homeowner and his outright lies just to get a sale were outright shameful. STAY AWAY.

M&J is a smaller nursery, but they pack a lot of plants inside. 100% of the nursery is under a greenhouse or canopy, which is unusual. So, the plants are in really good shape with no hail damage, heat damage, etc. They have tons of cacti and succulents ranging from extra small to medium. I was able to find a handful of rarer plants during my visit. The prices are fair and the service was excellent. Overall, I thought it was worth stopping by even for only a quick visit.
