A selection of Mexican food including enchiladas, rice, and a taco, with a cup of coffee and salsa on a wooden table.

Great service, nice staff. Clean restaurant. Prompt service. Food quality was 5/10, presentation and flavors were a little muted. But I'm used to bold Sonoran flavors and tortillas harina that have lard and are thinner. The red chili is great, the heat on their salsa is good too! gracias , soy rato!

Visiting Santa Fe, picked El Comal for its high ratings and wanting Mexican food. Appears to be a favorite with the locals. Ordered the Triple Enchilada: beef, cheese and chicken with beans and rice, corn tortillas. The enchiladas were covered with a red flaming hot sauce, a distracting heat covering the good food underneath. Scrapped chili sauce off to the side and it was all good. Second order was a Taco salad with beef. Fresh lettuce, good beef and all the fixings. Chips and salsa appeared to in house made, deep fried. Canned sodas for beverages. Service was fast and friendly.

Green chili - A bowl of green chili soup with visible ingredients like corn and black pepper, served at El Comal in Santa Fe, NM.

Wasn't too sure about the place when we drove up but happy we went in. Serve was very friendly and efficient. The food was good. Green chili sauce was good. Would we go back? Yeah probably so.

papas rancheras - A breakfast plate includes scrambled eggs, hash browns, refried beans, and a small side salad, with sauces in the background.

Great local place for food all day. We came for breakfast. The place is in a dumpy looking strip center but the food and service are awesome!! I had papas rancheras which was eggs over tasty potatoes with salad and refried beans. And it came with sopapilla!! yumm. The wife was hungry and had steak and eggs. Very tender ribeye. Huge portions. Took potatoes home and ordered a few flour tortillas to make breakfast tacos tomorrow.

We just got in town and we were hungry and looking for authentic local cuisine. The staff at hotel recommended El Comal as it was walking distance and we didn't want to get back in the car and drive. The strip mall is nothing to look at but the food was delicious, the service was great and we would definitely go back there again!! I had the Chili Relleno dinner and it was one of the best I've ever had! Hubby has the Combo Plate which he said was awesome and we both had a margarita! Looking forward to eating here again next time we pass through Santa Fe, NM

I really only came here because it was within walking distance of my hotel but I was pleasantly surprised. I got the steak, which was delicious. The sopapilla was really good as were the beans. The only thing that was a little disappointing was the red sauce on the enchiladas. Service was friendly and quick. Worth a try if you're in the area.

Xmas chili relleno - A large oval plate contains a chili relleno with red sauce, green chili with melted cheese, and a side of chopped tomatoes and lettuce.

Last visit to Santa Fe, El Comal was a bright spot amidst our foodie journey. Returning to Santa Fe again, we knew they were a must eat! This visit, I opted for the chili relleno, my husband the huevos rancheros, chicken taco for my daughter, and extra sopapillas for the table- Again, the largest, fluffiest sopapillas- warm, thick, poofy, delicious flavor-one of the more notable sopapillas in my entire NM visit The meal itself made me feel like I was eating an authentic home cooked meal, where everything was cooked with love. They did not skimp on ingredients or quality. Smothered upon smothered with cheese and chili, big pieces of meat in the taco, and delicious crispy chips & salsa irresistible always a must visit!

Dining room Friday night - Casual restaurant dining room with multiple patrons seated at tables, some eating and drinking, with wall decorations of animal silhouettes.

El Comal fills the bill. Unpretentious, good food, attentive service, reasonable prices. Bottled beer, margaritas, sangria and Michaela for alcohol. Generous servings. My sopapilla was the size of the plate. Family friendly, they can handle me or two parties of six, maybe more. Have to try their breakfasts. Will be back. Kinda hard to find. Look for the Cafe sign. El Comal has faded to almost nothing. Middle of a short strip of shops.

El Comal (flat iron, griddle) is in a very unassuming strip center. Not much to look at from the outside and has a very homey low key decor. The food is authentic New Mexico and it is simply magnificent! We were passing thru Santa Fe and wanted to try New Mexico dishes and chose this spot for its reviews we've read. So glad we did. I had the shredded beef sopapilla with both red and green chili sauce (Santa Fe Christmas style), amazing. If in the area, please stop by and try it yourself!

The owner/server made us feel like we were guests in their home rather than just customers in a restaurant. Genuine, warm, and welcoming -- the kind of hospitality that instantly makes your night better. Now the food... WOW. The prickly pear margarita deserves its own paragraph. It was easily one of the best margaritas I've ever had -- perfectly balanced, refreshing, and dangerously easy to drink. If you come here and don't order one, you're doing it wrong. What I loved most is that this place is equally amazing for vegetarians AND meat eaters. That's rare. * The squash taco was absolutely incredible -- flavorful, perfectly cooked, and proof that vegetarian dishes can be just as exciting as anything with meat. * Meanwhile, the menu is also a meat-lover's paradise with tons of taco options and traditional Mexican dishes that pack huge flavor. Everything tasted fresh, bold, and made with care. You can tell there's real pride behind the food here. Between the amazing tacos, the unforgettable margaritas, and the genuinely kind service, this was one of those meals you keep thinking about long after you leave. 10/10 -- would go back every time I'm in Santa Fe. !!!!!! Beans on the side were topped with sour cream which actually was great! Also shrimp/fish tacos were delishh. Really good flavor and freshness. Would have been amazing to have some crispy taco options but soft was nice. Rice was the worst part of the whole experience! Soooo bland. Worst I've had in a long time for real! Thankfully the dishes have a lot of sauce to soak it up with. The bathrooms were cute but the men's bathroom is a one person and does not lock... anyways! We loved the vibe ambiance and the waiters were really awesome!! I'd recommend!

For my husband's meal, he ordered green chile enchiladas, smothered in their famous hatch green chile and melted cheese. The sauce had that perfect New Mexican balance -- flavorful, a little smoky, and with just enough heat to keep things interesting without overpowering the dish. I went with chicken tacos, served with Spanish rice and all the fresh toppings. The tacos were loaded with shredded chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, and salsa, and the rice on the side was fluffy and well seasoned. To drink, I tried a layered frozen margarita, which was as fun to look at as it was to drink -- icy, refreshing, and perfect for a sunny afternoon on the patio. My husband had a cold beer, it made for the ultimate Santa Fe lunch combo. Between the flavorful food, the relaxed patio atmosphere, and the classic New Mexican dishes done right, Tomasita's is one of those spots that reminds you why Santa Fe's food scene is so special. Not really sure what all the hype is about when there are definitely better spots to eat around Santa Fe. I ordered the carne adovada. The red chile sauce felt pretty one-note and the pork was on the tough side, which was disappointing given how popular the dish is there. Honestly, the chips and salsa were the highlight of the meal. The salsa definitely has some heat to it too . Overall, between the long wait and average food, it just didn't live up to the reputation.

The red has that deep, earthy flavor with just the right kick, while the green brings a brighter, roasted heat that balances everything out. Together? That classic "Christmas style" combo that hits on every level. The masa was soft and flavorful (not dry like you get at some places), and the filling was generous and well-seasoned. Portion size was solid, presentation was clean, and everything tasted like it was made with care--not rushed, not watered down for tourists. They moved us to the other side of the pillar which we originally didn't mind but then quickly realized there's no lighting there. So we were eating dinner in a very dim lit area. After reading the reviews, we were excited to try the fish tacos, tamales, and fresh chips and salsa. Unfortunately, none of these really were superstar standouts for us. The blackened fish didn't have a ton of flavor. I found myself searching for a salsa that had a little bit of salt and flavor to spruce up the fish taco. I ate one of the three and my husband ate the remaining. The tamales tasted fresh and the ratio of protein to masa was great. We ate the tamale mostly without the mole sauce, which we didn't really care for. The salsa and chips that came out as an appetizer were fine. The salsas were different and flavorful. I wish that when they dropped off the different salsas (which they do on a rotation) they would have explained what each one was.
