Yes! Pile on the flavor. What a hidden treasure in Santa Fe, NM. When I say hidden, you are going south on Cerrillos, you pass the OilStop/CarWash and you turn right before you hit the Hampton Inn. There is a small shopping mall, a little dated but boy you've found it. When you walk in, they give you the option to seat yourself, they have booths and tables, we sat against the wall on a table, about 7 of us. It was quick and friendly, ordered drinks immediately. I had a cold beer, they serve it in an ice cold mug. I ordered the shredded beef stuffed sopapilla, XMAS. I had to to try the best of both worlds and by a very close margin, I enjoyed the green chile a little more. Its plated with the usually rice and beans, and I don't think I left any on the plate! Was staying at the hotel next door and since it was rainy we decided to walk next door and give El Comal a try. First of all, service was polite, fast, and the food was really good! I had the vegetarian enchiladas which were topped with green chilies and traditional sides. It's not easy to find Mexican food for vegetarians! This was good down home Mexican cooking. Omg, this place is FABULOSA! Of the three hole-in-the-wall places we have eaten at (all reviewed on Yelp) here in Santa Fe, this place is the best. I had the vegetarian sopapia (I know I'm spelling that wrong) and my husband had the combination plate. Both of us loved our food and were full as ticks. As one reviewer noted, there was only one waitress working and she was doing her best to serve everyone promptly. She was very nice and apologized profusely for the wait. Ate here with two kids after reading a good review. The place was pretty hard to find, but we eventually got there. Overall the food was pretty good. The chips were very crispy and the salsa was tasty, but pretty hot. I had the tamale plate, with both red and green chile and found it to be tasty. The green chile seems very fresh, and the red chile is hot (but not overwhelming). My older son liked his frito pie with green chile, but my younger son was less impressed with his burrito. The sopapillas were tasty and large. We spent about $30 for three people, which included a beer and three waters. The price tag would have been less without the (marginal) guacamole and the $1 extra for chile on the kids meal, which did not get eaten. I was so surprised by how disappointing our meals were at El Comal. This is a very popular place and average wait time can be from 30 to 45 minutes. The restaurant is lovely with wonderful art hung in all the rooms. The wait staff were very accommodating. The problem was the food. The cheese in my enchiladas wasn't melted. The rest of my friends were also disappointed. My partner ordered the green chile stew and it came with only two pieces of meat. I cannot recommend this place to anyone. read more

We had been to El Comal a couple of years ago and remembered it for good food, friendly people and great service as well as the fact that it seemed under-appreciated. We had another very good meal in what seems like a very local place. It is not touristy and serves good Santa Fe style food without a lot of fanfare. It has not been busy when we have been there, hence my comment about being under-appreciated. This time I had Carne Adobada with red chile topped with eggs and accompanied by chiles torreados. This was all very good. They roasted the chiles very well. I could have used some beans and should have ordered some. Bro J had an order of good chiles rellenos and Ms T ordered her taco salad. It had tons of seasoned ground meat, almost too much, with a spring mix of greens, topped with avocado and tomato. She really enjoyed it. We asked for our sopapillas to be served ad desert and they are some of the best we have had anywhere. They are huge, fresh, hot, soft and tender. We all drenched them with honey and ate every bite. You probably won't find El Comal on everyone's Santa Fe list but it is on ours. Strong four stars for this homey little place. If I lived here it would be a regular stop for me. read more

I was staying close by, and I asked the hotel reservationist at my hotel for a local "hole in the wall" type restaurant. This place has the best Mexican food I have ever eaten. I am still in shock when I walked in in the restaurant , it was full of families, grand parents , parents and kids . you could actually hear people after taking their first bite of their dish say oh my God this is wonderful. I heard that multiple times from multiple people in the restaurant and when I got my food oh my God, my Mexican taste buds will never be the same. I recommend this place wholeheartedly. Every time we come to Santa Fe, this is a must stop for dinner. We love good Mexican food that's in the region. We've traveled extensively in Mexico, eating in the places the locals go. There's lots of different kinds, lots of different regional flavors. We don't mind hot, as the chilies add good and interesting flavors. Tonight we both had stuffed sopapillas with Adobado. It had wonderful chunks of seasoned pork inside, and we had the red sauce, which paired perfect with it! The beans were cooked well and lightly seasoned. If you like rice, it was very well cooked and seasoned. A bit of guacamole, lettuce, cheese, and it was a flavor delight! The plain sopapillas come with your meal so you can use it like you would a tortilla. If you want them after your meal, I'm sure they would accommodate you. So yum! They don't have a huge selection of red wine, but the Chianti went just fine. Lots of beer selections, though we are partial to the Negra Modelo since that's what we drink in Mexico. It's a "hole in the wall" kind of place in the middle of the strip mall, but it's clean, comfortable, the one server when we go (4:00-4:30) is very nice, polite, efficient, and is very patient. Other than not being fancy with decor, it's a real hit with us, and it seems with local folks also. read more

Needing a breakfast place El Comal was a short walk from the Fairfield hotel next door. So glad that we ate here. This is definitely a local joint because all the locals were there. The restaurant is observing COVID restrictions very well. All employees with masks and gloves. Tables properly socially distanced. And breakfast was amazing!!! Hubby had French toast which he said was very yummy. Friend had pancakes that were really good. I had the Papa Rancheros which was amazing!!! Potatoes and green chili covered with cheese and two eggs however you want them and with refried beans and choice of tortilla or sopapilla. I went with the sopapilla and it was the best. Always love finding a good hole-in-the-wall restaurant when my wife and I travel. After reading some good reviews we decided on this spot because it was a short walk from our hotel and it sounded promising and cheap. BOY WAS I WRONG. So very disappointed. First off - the service was fine, no real issues there. The ambience was your typical brightly colored small cafe, and although the building was dated, it looked very clean. Smelled delicious walking in too! But the food is where they lost us. We had been traveling all day and were starving, so of course the chips/salsa/guacamole combo was the first thing we ordered. Chips were stale, and different - some thick yellow corn, some thin, some white corn. Salsa was watery, and I'm fairly sure that there was bell pepper in the guacamole (or maybe just really weak jalapenos?). I ordered the beef chalupa dinner. Chalupa shells were stale AND so very greasy although I'm not really sure where the grease came from. I know it wasn't from the ground beef - I'm not entirely convinced that it WAS ground beef. The consistency and taste was on track with what one might find at a taco bell, or a cat food can...mixed with sawdust to make it dry. No seasoning on the rice, and I realized after we left that I didn't even get my beans on the side! Tried to salvage my meal by dumping the chalupa contents out of their nasty shells and using the green chili my wife ordered on the side of her cheese enchilada - which she didn't even WANT in the first place but I guess folks around here think you have to have it with everything and so after insisting that she pick red or green chili we ended up with a bowl of what they CALLED green chili but it was just gross. I'm glad other people love it here, but I could've spent 1/2 as much at Taco Bell and then at LEAST I would've gotten some rice with some flavor in it and fresher chips and shells. It reminds of another run down place, a Chinese restaurant in Germantown , MD. This place has seating but the "I need paint and an update "is the exact same. That said, don't judge this book by its cover. The service is good. The food fresh. The red hot salsa is hot but not crippling. Fresh,hot homemade chips would be a perfect compliment but what they served for chips was fine. I got the chicken enchilada smothered in green chili. It was a good size portion with beans, rice, sopaipilla, guacamole and posole. The flavor was very good, but the enchilada was soggy. Not sure why but it wasn't the green chili. Sopapilla adobada was okay. Came out within 7-8 minutes. Sopapilla was probably frozen. The pork was chewy, not tender. Adobada sauce was spicy and flavorful but didn't do much to masque the underlying mediocrity. Place was darkish and empty on a Thursday night in January. Guacamole is a strange accoutrement for Chile sauces, me thinks. Not a fan of rice and beans as a side so I left that alone. I like Mom n Pop restaurants but this one is forgettable. I was intrigued by the Yelp reviews, and so we went, and this place blew me away! I had the papas rancheras with two over medium eggs on top and red chile-wow! Once I added a dab of soyr cream and refried bean to each bite, this meal was in my top 3 Mexican meals of all time, easily. There is so much flavor, and now I want to go back for the same dish tomorrow! My partner had the migas, and it was delicious as well. The sopapilla to end the meal just put the cherry on top. Do not be thrown off by appearances, and do not expect a crispy beef taco at any taco joint to blow your mind; that is what I noticed in other reviews.
