Fish taco's consisted of a chunk of white fish( said to be Halibut) with no flavor ! No cabbage, nothing, a wedge of avocado on top ! I was starving, and still only could eat 1 of the (said to be ) fish taco! Filled up with beans & rice! My wife and I were traveling through Bend and took granddaughter to lunch on Wednesday July 17. There were only a few cars in the lot and plenty of open booths/tables as we got there before noon. We were seated quickly and the server brought our drinks (Coke, Arnold Palmer and Water plus lemon slices) and a small tray of tortilla chips and we ordered our meals right away. Our granddaughter ordered cheeseburger/fries and my wife and I had the Taco salads with shredded pork. We waited at least a half hour before we received our food. The cheeseburger was very plain and couldn't get anything other than some lettuce and tomato to go on it but our granddaughter thought it was ok. For the fries the server brought a bottle of ketchup that was basically empty and several individual ketchup packages. The Taco salads were small and soggy with cold meat and without flavor. The worst we have ever had. The shell was soggy and stale. The tortilla chips were cold and stale and without flavor. The Arnold Palmer was pathetic and the lemon wedges for the water looked like they had been at room temperature for several hours. Really enjoyed the margarita at El Caporal tonight. The food was pretty good too but the service was awful. The waiter had a real attitude and wasn't in a hurry to serve us. Talking in the hallway for about ten minutes with our drinks. A different waitress brought our food to the wrong table and we had to wave her down. Finally got the drinks after all the commotion. Had to wait another five minutes for an extra plate so just sat there watching our food get cold. He even forgot my daughters soda and we had to wait for him to bring it. Meh...Have tried several Mexican restaurants in Bend. This one receives mentions, because it's been around for a while. El Rodeo, same thing. San hi Taco, rising from truck status to brick and mortar. Barrio is in a different class. I live on the North side, so not familiar with restaurants in the south or atop many in the west. Fish tacos at Parillo are a sure thing however. Rancho Grande in Cascade SS is also ok. That's what El Caporal is, just ok. Nothing special. Service was ok, food, ok, price, barely ok, ambience ok....So, ok, decide for yourself. I'm still looking for that great Mexican food space in the sky. read more

This place was quite bad and I do not recommend going there. We visited for "happy hour" at 4:30 on a Friday evening. The seater was rude and odd. The chips and salsa were good and free (only redeeming quality of this restaurant), and the margaritas were so bad I took one sip and sent mine back. It was nothing but a sickly sweet premade mix (from Walmart maybe)? I sent mine back and we left before presenting food. We stopped in during our travel to Bend, OR. The restaurant was pretty busy. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and seated in a nice booth right away. The waitress was very friendly, and our food was brought out quickly. The chips and salsa tasted fresh, and the carne asada was delicious. The restaurant was clean. Would recommend. read more

Terrible experience at this restaurant. To start, the woman taking us to our table dropped the menus on the table and walked away from us. When the waiter took our order, we asked for the drink menu. He disappeared for ten minutes, but we could hear him in the kitchen eating and talking. The food showed up warm, not hot. That's when the waiter asked if we wanted to order a drink. One of the waitresses brought another customer to her table while chewing her food. There were a total of seven customers in the restaurant and we still got ignored. Staff is unprofessional and lazy. Food was average at best. If you're in Bend, stick to the breweries because this place sucks. read more

Went there for Father's Day and while I understand every place is having issues with staffing and supply .. well, I'll spare you the entire horrible experience but let's just say that when your food comes forty minutes after ordering and it's lukewarm at best (remember that the plates in a Mexican place almost always come out nuclear hot), missing parts of the order, and when we can (finally) flag down our surly waitress and ask for a fresh version, the answer should not be "oh, no, no, we can't do that, it will take too long." Terrible service, mediocre food, next time we have a hankering for beans-and-rice-and-something-else Mexican, we will definitely not be coming back here. We ate in the bar and the staff were awesome. They handled our rowdy group of 5 like champs. I ordered the $23 wet burrito with chicken, carne asada, shrimp, ripe avocado, and roasted peppers. I have to admit, it was pretty dang good. I might even order it again despite the price being absurd for a burrito.most of us got margaritas, which were good. The service is fast and friendly and the chips were hot but the huevos rancheros were too greasy to eat and the veggie burrito had celery inside (celery, in a burrito!!?). Also the only beer on tap was a local IPA (no Pacifico or Dos Equis or Corona?!?). Overall felt like a meal straight out of 1992 (overly greased, under freshed, with little inspiration or flavor). I would have given this place a 3 start except they over charged me. The food was mediocre and tasteless. I love Taco Salads but this was the worst I ever had. The chicken was tough and difficult to chew, the sauce/beans had no flavor. My husbands burrito tasted like it was filled with potato and, again, very tasteless. The Service was very good and the ambiance was nice. We took our granddaughter there for her birthday. The meal came to $41.95 to which we gave them a $4 tip. Total was $45.95. I just got the charge today, they added another $2 to make it $47.95. I guess they didn't like a 10% tip. I will not go back. read more

El Caporal seems to be going down the tubes. We used to enjoy going there. The food was good and the margaritas were tasty. Lately, it's been a real zoo. They are either super busy with very little help. Which I understand and have no problem with, or like this evening, not busy and the service was horrible. There were only 6 full tables but it took forever to get our food and drinks. After watching our waiter stand in the hallway having a long conversation before he brought our drinks, he got attitude when he placed the drinks in front of the wrong people. Bad service plus attitude... we will be finding somewhere else for Mexican food. read more

I and my lady friend had lunch here yesterday afternoon and I ordered street tacos with asada meat and beans no rice with a Diet Coke and a margarita on the rocks. I got a plate that was 1/4 rice, tacos I couldn't pick up because the tortillas were soft and covered with sauce. The meal was edible except for the RICE as I don't eat rice of any fn kind and the tacos I had to use a fork. I had to wait for 15 minutes to get my check after the waiter removed the dishes from the table (2) other tables were in use. I got my bill and was overcharged $7 for my tacos. I said nothing to the elderly waiter as I didn't want to cause an issue. As I was leaving I looked at a menu and it confirmed what I had suspected and I pointed it out to the hostess. Next thing I know the waiter came up behind me and talking in Spanish (I speak and understand limited Spanish) to the hostess telling her I had ordered skirt steak tacos to which I had to remind them both that the menu defines skirt steak as asada. I also told the hostess that I was not wanting a refund I was just making a point that I frequent this place and to make someone else aware of what happened. I left and told her see you next time. Second time at this place . I'm from Cali so was out there visiting my daughter who lives in bend. The tres caballos plate is massive . So if your fat like me you shouldn't have a problem. Lol. O don't be sensitive! The spot is great I made myself to the bar area which I recommend everyone to get to , great atmosphere. Maria the bus girl is so nice and sweet . The staff are the best part about this restaurant. They're really nice & attentive. Traditional Mexican architecture & interior design which is beautiful. There's a 21+ cantina/lounge as well as a dining area for families. The food is always very good. My only complaint is the rice is crunchy, dry and over cooked. El Caporal's new location brought the same mediocre food you're used to in a new larger more open location. I say mediocre food because to me it just checks the box for "Mexican food" and has yet to impress me any of the times we've been here. Unfortunately, Bend in my opinion doesn't have many good Mexican Restaurants so far but they had the opportunity to really step it up with their new digs. The new location is much nicer, cleaner, and brighter in the dining area. It wouldn't take a lot to make it a 3.5-4 star Mexican Restaurant as the service is always great, even with large groups but food quality would have to improve greatly to make them truly compete. read more

Friends of mine took me to El Carporal's restaurant before the pandemic.I am not able to eat spicy food. I asked if I can a mild salsa, and they had mild salsa, which was no problem. The food was good. The service was good. No complaints. Be hungry before you go, the portions are large. Other Mexican restaurants I have been did not have mild salsa, and there would me comments. Loved the food and waiter . All that was great . Why I didn't give them 5 stars ? I ordered 1/2 order of deluxe nachos as a meal off the appetizer list . It was 8.00 for 1/2 order without meat . Meat with the choice of pork , chicken , shredded beef or burger , 1.50 extra . The problem was when I requested shrimp instead of the other meat options . The waiter said , yes no problem , but it will be a small amount higher then the other meat choices . I said no problem as I wouldn't have imagined , 4 shrimp the size of quarters being too much more . He didn't specify " that small amount higher " We got the check , and I was like WOAH ! We were charged the difference of 8.00 plain for deluxe 1/2 order , to 17.95 for 1/2 order deluxe nachos with (4) shrimp !!! I felt entrapped . For another dollar , I could have had another fancier item off the menu with prawns , and probably more then 4 ! Also their was barely any refried beans on the nachos . Beans are inexpensive! One tiny bowl of the beans was expensive @ 1.00 to dip our chips in while we waited for our dinner . Granddaughter had chicken fajitas which the meat was delicious . Can't complain at all about the food taste and quality , but the prices were pretty high , and the deluxe nachos with (4) shrimp was OMG ! That was icing on the cake . They either need to tell you that small charge ( yah right ) ahead of time , so we could have decided if an 8.00 nacho order was worth turning into 17.95 ! Totally redundant " up charge " .
