We had a group of 20, I know that alot of us. We got seated, chips and waters were already on the tables. Right away you could tell our waitress was in a mood, she did not smile, acted like we were a inconvenience. We all sat down and were chit chatting, looking at the menu. 25-30 mins go by, (it was not busy) our oh so "lovely" waitress shows up to take orders. She was rushing through us, missing a couple of us, didn't ask some of us what we wanted to drink, asked for more chips, napkins and salsa she brought napkins. Well orders were wrong, drinks taken back to be blended, she still hadn't taken a couple people's drink order and she like disappeared, didn't check on us. A family member accidentally dropped her glass on the floor, a staff member was told, 3 staff passing by it, not cleaning it up. The family member moved the table out of the way along with a couple Kids, Finally our waitress comes to clean it and says to family member, so you just dropped it? She says it slipped out of my hand, waitress says figures. Family member says, oh yeah, Im just gunna pay for a drink to drop it on the floor so you have to clean it up!! My sister went to the restroom, it was our birthday, we told the staff not to sing yet because she was in restroom, the gentleman brought a shot over and slammed it on the table (Yeager bomb) spilling it. They all started singing, my sis was not back yet. RUDE! She comes back and the guy says here, here's a shot. So we all sang to her. Service (what service really) was terrible, waitress was rude, didn't smile, rushed through taking orders, messed up orders, didn't check on us, automatically took 20% tip which did not deserve at all. The food wasn't bad. WILL NOT BE EATING THERE AGAIN, WILL NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE. read more

El Caporal ( westside ) The Nachos were awful! The chips are thin and they burnt the top - I am not sure if the beef was too greasy, but 90 percent of the chips were soggy it was very unappetizing to even look at! They pressured from the get go on "ordering up" from the table side guacamole guacamole was already an item on the Nachos to then just assuming we would get margaritas. After i ordered my beverage they never came back to get my husbands drink order until after the Nachos were out - he ended up ordering a margarita and specified for one ... they brought him a margarita for two. I get it, part of the job is to up sale- but it was full pressure and the food was really horrible. We did not finish and we wont be back! read more

I do not know how many Mexican restaurants there are in Central Oregon, over 40 at least. This week we ate at two of them. This time was with a group of friends that are regulars at El Caporal. As expected the staff was very friendly and the service was excellent. My disappointment was the food. I ordered a chorizo burrito. It came as a wet burrito with rice and beans. I was expecting a nice spicy burrito; however, the chorizo was bland. Because our friends are regulars at El Caporal, we will probably return and give the restaurant a second chance to impress. read more

I came to Bend on a business trip and this place was right across the parking lot and after the 5 hour plus drive I didn't feel like jumping back into my truck to find a place. Thank God that I didn't, this place has a great wet carne asada plate that I thoroughly enjoyed. The food was great and I knew it would be because you can always tell a Mexican food joint is going to be good if the chips and salsa are good, and the salsa here is fantastic. The food came out quickly and the service is very friendly and attentive. I highly recommend this place and I definitely will be back. read more

El Caporal is a venerable Bend establishment which tops the list of many Bendite's favorite Mexican restaurants. They offer an expansive menu with all the usual options, a really nice interior with comfortable seating and ambiance, and a separate bar with TVs. Food is high quality and the service is attentive (they have staffing issues like everyone else though). Prices are higher than you might expect but that seems to be the way things are these days - restaurants struggle with sourcing affordable ingredients. Recommended. read more

The east side is slipping......they wouldnt seat us until half of our group were there and when we were seated there were several tables open.....then it seemed we were just an inconvenience, none of the staff smiled except the owner.......they are a far cry from when they started across the street, maybe hire some new help! The food was so so. The chili Riano had to be cut with a knife. I don't think they peeled the chili. I ordered a container of salsa to take home with me because it was so wonderful. He told me it was $10 for the container after getting home. This place was definitely on the higher end of the spectrum of the Mexican food places I frequent. The meal would have been better if there wasn't a party of younger millennials or older zoomers downing rounds of Cadillac margaritas at the table next to us being...well margarita drunk and boisterous. The decoration were well done and classy. You could definitely take a date here. Just don't dine in the bar area. I got the el cap burrito. It was $28. I was expecting either the biggest burrito I've ever seen or just the most delicious burrito ive ever had. It was more of the latter than the former. It was sauce smothered burrito. Upon discovering they use a syrupy pre-mix for their margaritas, I would have preferred my Hornitos on the rocks. Noted for next time. The salsa packs a punch, which I love, but might be overwhelming for those less tolerant to spice. The rice was perfectly cooked, with a subtle crispness and al dente texture, avoiding any mushiness. As for the mole, it was a revelation! Unlike some Mexican-American moles, which can be overly acidic or dense, this one struck a delightful balance between sweet and savory. The beans were expertly seasoned, neither over nor under-salted, with a pleasingly consistent texture--neither too runny nor too thick. Nice decor, great staff. My wife's cream chicken tasted great she said. My Colorado Beef was okay. The corn tortillas tasted like cardboard, no corn taste at all. The salsa was spicy but lacked depth of flavor. The music was so loud that it was hard to hear my wife's conversation. And they didn't turn down the volume when I requested. So there's a reason it's featured on a billboard in town.. to draw patrons in. The first few times we liked it but the last two had me over it quickly. Chips and salsa always decent. thin, crisp chips and basic restaurant style salsa perfect for dunking chips. The food though.. fairly pricey for what you get. The last time, the Chile verde was tough. The Chile rellano which I enjoyed previously, tasted like it was dipped in an overly eggy batter with no flavor to the pepper. Also, once I wanted flautas plate which literally came with one flauta and beans and rice, was cut into thirds! Btw I was still hungry for about $13 .. They also snuck some bits of potato into my sons shredded beef taquitos he ordered. I knew bc I was so hungry I began eating his dish. Looking for a new sit down mex restaurant to enjoy.. read more

Pretty disappointing overall. Asked whether the taco shells were corn or flour and was told they were flour, so I changed my order. Turns out they are in fact hard corn taco shells which is what I wanted in the first place. The picadillo beef was undercooked so it was tough and chewy. The chicken was overcooked so it too was tough and dry. Despite receiving my order as it came out of the kitchen, it was lukewarm at best by the time I got home 5 mins later. Otherwise, quality was just OK. Won't be going back. I would avoid this spot and go to Hola, El Rodeo or Mazatlan. read more

This place never disappoints. The food is always good and the service too. The salsa is yummy and the chips are fresh. The beef was delish as some other places have a weird taste or cheap meat. The chili Verde was delicious and the chicken fajitas outstanding. Plenty of refills and they made a special chicken breast for our pup that was perfect for her. She wanted more and she's not the best eater as she would rather play ball. Another great meal with family and we look forward to our next trip to Bend. read more

Fish taco's consisted of a chunk of white fish( said to be Halibut) with no flavor ! No cabbage, nothing, a wedge of avocado on top ! I was starving, and still only could eat 1 of the (said to be ) fish taco! Filled up with beans & rice!
