The Beginning:
My girlfriend and I decided to eat at Egg since we were in the area and we wanted breakfast. Their online ordering experience was pretty seamless. The menu was clearly laid out on their website and I recommend using their website if doing pick up/curb side delivery. After we placed our order, we were notified that it'd be ready at 9:50 AM.
- Semolina Pancakes: $11
- Pork Belly Benedict: $14
- 1 Carne Asada Breakfast Taco: $6.50
Total: ~$40 with tax and tip
The Pick Up:
Our order arrived promptly at 9:50 AM steaming hot, delivered by a friendly worker. Before driving off, I gave the goods a once over - modus operandi for any pick up order. Everything seemed to be right, except the pancakes were missing their honey butter & maple syrup the menu promised. Shocked, I worked quickly to address this for there is no greater sin than a naked pancake. The folks at Egg were quick to remediate this issue and quickly gave me a copious amount of maple syrup. However, it still felt weird that they missed the only two things that were supposed to come with my pancakes.
The Eating:
We arrived home to see all the meals packaged nicely. The pancakes were laid out lovingly, the taco bursting at the seams from the generous amounts of egg and carne asada, and the pork belly eggs benedict laying on a crispy bed of breakfast potatoes. I was about to dig in when I saw a sin greater than naked pancakes, a naked eggs benedict. My eggs benedict lacked hollandaise sauce and laid there barren, exposed, and sad. I would describe my reaction to this discovery as equal to my disappointment in the 2020 Presidential Debate between Trump and Biden, this time condensed to 10 seconds rather than a painful 1.5 hours.
Otherwise everything was executed pretty well. The pancakes were decent but I'm not sure I would pay $11 for three plain, medium-sized pancakes. The tacos were decent, the carne asada wasn't cooked to hell and was still tender. The tortillas were fluffy and held up well during transportation. The eggs benedict for what I received was also decent. The breakfast potatoes were amazing, like crispy little chips with a nice fluffy interior. The pork belly that came with the dish was both generous and seared/seasoned to perfection. The idea of replacing the english muffin with cornbread is borderline genius and insane. However, none of that makes up for the lack of hollandaise sauce.
Egg should be proud of the food they serve. The quality of their food is nothing to scoff at and while their dishes look simple on the surface, each has their own unique twist. However, good technique does not help you recover from dishes missing major components. So with that, I conclude with this:
In 9 A.D Emperor Augustus exclaimed "Give Me Back My Legions" when he discovered that he had lost three of his roman legions in the Teutoburg Forest.
In 2020, I say "Give Me Back my Money" for my eggs benedict had no hollandaise. read more
