What a prized gem to stop upon once we crossed into Alabama. The line was to the door of this cafeteria style cafe which is typically a good indicator of a tasty meal. We noticed some folks sitting on the bench by the line and learned they were waiting for "dressing" which they recommended we try. We ordered two ribs plates and one baked chicken plate, dressing, collards, yams, and butter beans. Since they had sold out of cornbread we defaulted to a white dinner roll. Then onto the homemade lemonade and sweet tea. Service was great! Authentic and warm to the first time customers, they obviously had regulars who were greeted lovingly by name. All the line servers answered my questions and patiently waited for our selections. We even met "Little Ed" son of the restaurant's namesake, who was so kind! The food delivered nicely spiced ribs, tender, fall-off-the-bone baked chicken and tender collard greens. The prized jewel of Ed's for us was the dressing - wow, just delicious! I mixed mine up with the butter beans for a small protein twist. We were so satisfied that we brought home the yams for a treat later. Summary: The people are friendly and the food is the definition of comfort. Delicious home-cooked food! I was looking for a new place to try & this, off the beaten path restaurant, fit the bill. Ample dining area with tables to share (5-6 long tables with 10+ chairs each). Not crowded during lunch rush hour; many get their food to go. Large portions! There's a HUGE selection to choose from! It is a little pricey for lunch (my BBQ plate was $13.99 + drink), but I'm expecting that to be more of the norm due to increased food prices. I recommend trying their delicious cakes! read more

We had a great lunch at Ed's today! We were in Phenix City for the day and decided to try to find a bbq joint with an open dining room (GO AWAY COVID). The guys sent me in to be sure it was somewhere we wanted to eat, you never know in a strange city..... well, the smell when I opened the door made my decision for me. We all ordered ribs with 2 sides and corn bread muffins and couldn't eat it fast enough. I just wish I had been able to try the fried chicken! By the time we finished eating, the line was forming! Simply put, the food was good but not great. I had the turkey n' dressing, which was a little too salty, candied yams were perfectly sweet but unfortunately were cold, and sweet tea that I didn't receive until nearly the end of my meal. Somehow, they ran out and it had to be made (although I do appreciate the effort). The ribs my youngest son ordered were a little too tough and only average in flavor. These ribs suffered a severe case of "lookus deceivius" which is a made-up food diagnosis for looking much better than they actually tasted. My wife had a veggie plate which included mashed potatoes, candied yams, green peas and yellow squash. Her final reaction when I asked if she enjoyed her meal: "It was okay." Service was respectable at the counter and the kitchen staff kept the food display area very clean. The dining area was also very clean. Often I don't bother to write a review when I experience a place like this with high overall ratings, but I just can't co-sign to the hype. Kinda makes me feel like something must be wrong with me if the majority of reviewers love the food, but I'm left scratching my head wondering how is that possible. So I'm just going to call it like I see it. The experience and the food were just okay. Not bad, not great... just okay. We stopped in for lunch while driving from Knoxville to the Gulf Coast, and it was exactly as advertised: southern, soul meat-and-three. Amazing-human-being (my wife) and I shared a lunch plate of meatloaf with mashed potatoes, cucumber-tomato salad, okra, and a piece of cornbread. The meatloaf was perfect with a sweet, tangy sauce. The okra was cut into small pieces and probably steamed or barely parboiled (not fried), and it was very flavorful. The cornbread was ho-hum (kinda dry); and the mashed potatoes were just a delivery vehicle/accompaniment for the meatloaf and sauce. Service wasn't friendly or fast; but fine. If I make it back, I'll definitely go for the ribs or fried chicken. They looked pretty incredible. read more

This place is definitely my favorite soul food spot in Phenix City. It really is a hidden gem and I'm so glad I found it. Ed's can get pretty busy so when I can I try to go during the day to beat the crown. This restaurant has plenty of seating so it's a great place to bring the family for dinner. My favorite dish from Ed's would have to be the smothered pork chops... I mean the meat just falls off the bone... What more can you ask for?. And everything is buffet style so you never have to wait for your order. You just let them know what you want and they'll have it ready for you in under 5 mins. The only reason I give 4 out of 5 is because of the first lady behind the counter that usually does the meat. I've been to Ed's on several different occasions and almost everytime she's back there she picks up my meat with her plastic glove on her hand and puts it's on my plate. Uh no ma'am you will not be picking up my meat with your glove after I just watched you (while in line) clean the counters with a dirty rag with "that glove" lean onto the wall with "that glove" and not to mention push open the push doors with that glove... I drove there after reading the reviews. Ordered 2 large bbq rib plates a fried chicken late and a baked chicken plate. You walk down the line don't really see what they put in. When I got to the hotel no bbq sauce on ribbs. Only got 2 ribs in one and one in the other. Bunch of dried out rib ends. Sides are ok but I am very disappointed. Nobody even offered bbq sauce. The fried chicken was good but too much for what I got. 2 thighs. The baked chicken was on rice. Ok. I doubt I will go back. read more

Delicious southern food. You can judge a place by how many church folk are at a restaurant on Sunday, and this place was packed. The baked chicken is glazed in lemon and absolutely delicious. The cornbread fell apart in my hands, but in a good way. The yams were sweet and tasted like dessert. The dressing covered in gravy was fabulous. The sweet tea was the best I've ever had. The collard greens were not good, but I don't like those anywhere. The place is a buffet so service is quick. It's definitely worth the drive to Alabama from Columbus. read more

I loved it. Don't believe that I've ever had better soul food, meat to tea. Everything was perfect to my taste & my somewhat limited experience with soul food. Fried chicken was fabulous. Greens were perfect. Iced tea, unsweetened for me, was fresh, cold & plentiful. And with lemon! Black eyed peas, a fav of mine, were the best that I'd ever had. Loved the mashed potatoes & gravy. Even went back & got a piece of baked chicken. Great. I've never eaten buffet style food that was all so good. Don't know how they do it, but they do it all very well. We stopped based on Yelp reviews and they were spot on. This is true southern cooking at its best. You walk through a food line and pick what you want. We had smothered pork and fried chicken. Both outstanding. The sides of yams, blackeyed peas, collard greens, mashed potatoes,and cabbage were excellent as well. Don't bother stopping if you are on a low-carb diet. Ordered - Turkey wing - Dressing - Candied Yams - Black-eyed peas - Cornbread - Key lime cake - Sweet tea Turkey wing was fall-off-the-bone tender and very flavorful, although not a ton of meat. Dressing was fantastic and moist, as were the candied yams (perfectly sweet) and black-eyed peas (with bits of meat and greens in there). Cornbread was very basic and dry, but still decent. BUT MAN, the key lime cake was fantastic. The frosting is some cream cheese-based frosting with nuts in it, sort of like carrot cake frosting. I also thought the sweet tea was alright, nothing out-of-this world though. Will be back to try the other meats! :) Have to say that between this and Minnie's, I would choose Ed's ANY day. I'm visiting from Florida. This is my first time here. The food is amazing. The pig feet was amazing with this honey mustard sauce added to it. There cornbread is great. And the yams are good as well. I had their red velvet cake and it was delicious. It's hard to find someone that can make a good red velvet cake but they did a great job. The best "soul food" I have had in the area and easily the best greens. The turkey wing (flight and radius/ulna only) was roasted and slow cooked with water such that it was falling off the bone. In fact, all I left behind was a small pile of bones and some of the biscuit (not particularly good--will opt for the corn bread next time). Glaze on the turkey was ok, but the homemade spicy sauce (I heard someone else ask for it) was very very good. It was a bit thinner than I might make it (I like to slather it a bit too thick), but plenty of mustard, heat and sweet. Greens were perfect (often they are too salty or mushy for my taste). Stuffing with cranberry jelly and summer squash were unremarkable. IMO, the squash was overcooked, a local custom from which deviation is rare, but it was not buttery or creamy. Unsweetened iced tea was ok and bottomless. The building is well off the beaten path in a sister city that is considered the "other side of the tracks" and although it is near the main street, Ed's is located in an industrial area that no one would happen upon unless they worked nearby. That said, Ed's is worth a detour for both the food and the cultural experience (I have lived in the US only 12 of my 50 years mostly in CA and FL). There are Christian religion overtones (not too heavy or preachy) and the owners are clearly big fans of President Obama. Food is simple, authentic and served cafeteria style. They also had chicken, rice, beans, corn bread and oxtail soup (will definitely try the latter two next time). I was told they also do bbq pork. Service is appropriate and effective and tables are regularly checked to make sure all the right equipment is at hand and the drinks are full. Table covered with local business ads was surprisingly tasteful and effective (not easy to do IMO)--color photos directly on acrylic with durable clear coating. First time ever I think I will buy a shirt. It has a the biblical, but appropriate, quote on the back "Taste and see that the Lord is Good--PS34:8). The owners and staff at Ed's are definitely true to their faith. read more
