I am so extremely disappointed in my experience with Edgar's Bakery in this location. I had used the Tuscaloosa location before and it was fabulous. I ordered my daughters college graduation cake (we live in Georgia) and when we picked it up, we drove 1 mile with the cake on my lap to our hotel. When I opened the box, I was appalled at what I found. I immediately called and emailed as directed. I was told they could remake the cake but it would have done no good because it wouldn't be ready in time for us. I was told the cake 'probably shifted while in transit'. Look closely at the pictures, it shifted for two reasons. The layers were uneven and I don't believe the cake was left refrigerated. I witnessed the girl grab my cake box from a shelf in the open kitchen area. After two phone calls and three emails I was told upper management would get back to me. This was May 2018. Glad I'm not holding my breath. So disappointed. 4 years at The University of Alabama and this is the cake we got. Look at the cardboard where the cake is. Great pastries--that's. five star value. BUT, big party breakfast...go some where else. They can't handle large tables. We had three groups in one table with three numbers for orders. They came out and handed food out randomly with no regard to the order numbers. They have no knives so if you want to cut your food you'll have to ask three or four times to get a plastic one. If you order juice and they don't tell you it's in the frig and to grab it yourself youll never get it. And the eggs and biscuits are stale and have been under a hot lamp--not fresh. They have a large selection, and, this was one of the few consumer bakeries here for a long time.They have multiple locations. When out of town guests were at my house a month ago, I stopped into the 280 location and purchased a variety of cupcakes and petit fours. That night I served the dessert after dinner. It was embarrassing after spending that much my dinner guests told me to contact Edgars to tell them it was so stale they couldn't eat any of it. I did as they suggested by emailing Edgars along with my receipt information showing the day and time I made the purchase. I drive 30 minutes out of my way every time just to go to this Edgar's because their service is usually amazing. This time I had my husband call ahead of time to see if they did curbside pick up and the lady on the phone (didn't get her name) told us that they would. I drive there and call and Brett or Brent tells me "uhh no.. we're not doing that" now if I wasn't told that they would ahead of time I wouldn't have brought my two children with me. At this point I'm frustrated, it's covid and now I'm having to juggle a double stroller and a cake and I'm in tears at this point. I had an out of body experience when I first bit in to the red velvet cupcake at Edgar's. This pastry was so good, I managed to forget Glen Beck was on the TV. Nice ambiance for a neighborhood style walk-up cafe. I enjoyed my soup-sandwich combo and desperately wanted another red velvet cupcake when I was done. Yet another good find in B'ham. read more

I come here to the Edgar's in Hoover the Food Great and the atmosphere is great. BUT!!!! What keeps me coming back everyday is the fact that the Cashiers, and the managers well to be honest everyone is just wonderful. They know who I am and what I want. If I miss a visit they are happy to see me on my next visit. When you go and get great food it is the service that make it worthwhile. This is why I love this place. Oh, the strawberry cake... It's like a little piece of paradise. Seriously, if you like strawberries, you've GOT to try this cake. I'm not a huge cake fan in general, but that thing is outstanding. It's always really moist and surprisingly well-balanced considering how sweet the icing is. I've also had the German Chocolate cake and it was really good as well. Again, very moist and it had bits of chocolate chunks in the cake itself. A nice surprise! If you're a cake fan, try them. If you AREN'T a cake fan, try them. You'll probably be pleasantly surprised! From the Marilyn Monroe sandwich (chicken, pepperoni and cheese grilled in a cheesy roll) to the gourmet cupcakes and cookies, we were so happy to have found Edgar's while we were in Birmingham. I believe that in the week we were in Alabama, we visited Edgar's at least four times, and every time the customer service and food were on point. The cupcakes were moist, even at the end of the day, with just the right amount of frosting. My favorite was the chocolate with caramel frosting, although my companions enjoyed the other flavors just as much. My breakfast croissant sandwich was rich and filling with a flaky and buttery croissant. This is the breakfast your trainer warned you about (and made you do an extra 20 minutes on the elliptical for). And finally, the Marilyn Monroe. Despite all of the delicious sandwiches on the menu, I had to repeat this one on my second lunchtime visit. The gooey cheese with the spicy pepperoni and moist chicken was divine and the homemade marinara dipping sauce only upped the ante. I may never be in Birmingham again, but if I am, I will definitely be visiting Edgar's! read more

The very nice gentlemen behind the counter was so patient with me. He had an awesome personality and mentioned he was a trainer of some sort. I was quite indecisive because they were out of Lemon Bars! I asked "Aren't you famous for your Lemon Bars...how can you be out of them? He smiled and said, "actually, our Strawberry cake is one of our most popular items". Hmmm, Strawberry cake you say.... I told him that I was visiting from Atlanta and mentioned that "Piece of Cake" has the BEST Strawberry cake. He challenged me and said that a piece of Edgar's cake would change my mind... I went here this morning to have breakfast with a friend. I ordered the old fashioned oatmeal and a mocha which were both really good. My friend ordered a sandwich which she liked but her iced coffee was not a real iced coffee. They just poured blazing hot coffee over ice so it was super watered down and not good. I have enjoyed eating here in the past and I still think their bread and bakery items are wonderful. However my Mother and I went here for lunch yesterday, I was disappointed. I ordered a caprese salad which is new on the menu. It was described as mixed greens with mozzarella balls, tomatoes with a basil sauce and balsamic vinaigrette. The salad was tasty, but was all iceberg lettuce. I inquired about it and the lettuce and the waitress replied this is all we have. I was disappointed that Edgar's had lowered their standard. I've been here numerous times and it's been "ok" at best, but this last time I'm still upset with. Went in to order a "tasting" cake for a massive engagement shower I was giving. All of the hostesses wanted to try it and would all be in town on easter weekend. I was told to just order the easter cake from the case as it was just like wedding cake/birthday cake. Ordered the easter cake. Took it home for all the hostesses to try. Absolutely no flavor and the cake was mushy (not moist, but mushy-big difference), the icing was not sweet at all, the cake was cracked on the back and was like missing vanilla or something. It was just plain off and weird. I'm a cake-aholic and I took 2 bites and threw mine away. That's how bad it was. I contacted the bakery mid morning Monday morning and they pretty much said "impossible! Our cakes are delicious." They asked for pics and I sent them. They reply to me was that they sampled leftover cakes/remaining cakes and they were "just fine!" Then insinuated that I simply wanted a refund and told me I wasn't getting one. 1. I was trying to make sure I got the correct cake as I was told it should taste like wedding cake and it tasted nothing like this 2. Boxed cake mix and icing tastes better (shoe leather tasted better than this cake) 3. How rude to insinuate someone wants a refund (and to inform them they're not getting one) when they're trying to make sure they tried the correct cake and just called to clarify something hadn't been left out and that your bakery got a fair representation at the tasting! I'll be sure to purchase treats for my customers and order cakes elsewhere from now on. read more

I made cupcakes as a hobby and I must say when I come to Birmingham I have to come to Edgars the cupcakes are the best in the WORLD!! Oh they are so soft and fluffy the icing is not overbearing but just enough to have you finish it in 30 sec. My favorite is the caramel, white and cookies and cream. If there was filling that would be too dangerous for me. A good thing is they have cupcake happy hour from 3-5 pm where you can get 3 cupcakes for $5. Dessert only review: Felt like I was a little kid in a candy shop as there were so many desserts on display to choose from. Their cakes are $3.75/slice which is a bit steep but it appears popular with many patrons. I tried a bite of the strawberry and definitely think it's worth trying. While I want to ding them for the Oreo Cupcake (see below), they described it but it was my expectation and interpretation that misled me. Red Velvet Cupcake was good. Moist and soft inside that it almost crumbled in my hand. Enjoyable dessert to accompany a filling lunch. Oreo Cupcake was average. They placed an Oreo cookie with some chocolate icing on top a chocolate cupcake. I thought the cupcake would be something more than an average chocolate cupcake. read more

This is place is just plain adorable. The dessert case is always, always full of "ooohs" and "aaahs.". While I am not anywhere near 280 on the mornings, I will venture this direction midday on occasion. All the sandwiches I've had have been delicious, and sometimes inspiring; I make my own apple butter, and probably would not have thought to put it on a turkey sandwich until I ate it here. Now the Cranapple Jack is my favorite deli option. It is also fun, while waiting in line, to watch the pastry chefs at their craft - flouring, kneading, and decorating all the goodies that the bakery is famous for. It would be bad for my budget, not to mention my waistline, to eat here on a regular basis. But everyone deserves a little treat every now and then, and Edgar's is definitely a spot to go to treat yourself. read more

When it came time to help my son pick out his Groom's Cake, the three of us met with Cindy and had a cake tasting. Line was long at 11am. Cashier couldn't answer simple questions like "what do your breakfast potatoes look like?" And "do they have onions in them?" I told her no onions, please. I ordered a small latte and the cashier nor the other associate next to her knew how to make it. When the food came, my potatoes were mushy/soggy and definitely had onions in them. I asked for two scrambled eggs and they had no fluff to them and instead tasted like rubber. The only thing that was decent, surprisingly enough, was my latte.
