Eco Grow is such a fun place to visit. They have a wonderful and diverse selection of plants, especially lots of local desert-friendly options, which is perfect for gardening in this climate. The staff was friendly and responsive, and happy to help while I was looking around. One of the highlights was definitely the koi ponds--they were really cool to watch, and spotting the turtle hanging out with the koi was an unexpected bonus. They also have a nice variety of pots and plant accessories, so it's easy to find everything you need in one stop. Great plants, great atmosphere, and even some entertaining aquatic roommates. We randomly stumbled onto this store while on a day trip down to Tucson. The "Weird Plants" sign they had on the sidewalk in front of their store drew us in, it was a last minute decision to pull in and check it out on the way to our actual destination. I am glad we stopped in! They had a fantastic selection of plants along with a wide variety of needs like soils, grow lights, pots and more. The prices were great as well, both my mother and I ended up buying several plants and my mom even had a few planted in store as they had a deal where if you bought a plant & a pot, they would repot the plant into the pot for you. They also sold Koi fish in different sizes for anyone looking to start a pond in their yard. We live up in Phoenix, but this store would be worth the drive to go down and visit to pick up some more plants when we are looking for them. Our plants made it back on the trip perfectly fine & they still look fantastic. I can't wait to see their growth, and I will be trying out an indoor plant fertilizer I bought at Ecogro to help some of my other indoor plants flourish as well. Saw a sign that said weird plants and knew I had to stop in! What a wonderful shop. All the workers were very friendly and knowledgeable. You can bring in your own plants that may need to be repotted and for a small fee they will do that for you with the appropriate soil etc. They also have koi fish, all kinds of beautiful planter pots, terrariums, air plants and soil. I got an awesome air plant that hangs from a glass dome and it looks just like a jellyfish. There's a large parking lot to the west. I highly recommend dropping here. Great vibes! Holy air plants!! Eco Gro has the best air plant selection of any plant store/nursery I've ever been to. They also have a wide selection of succulents, tropicals, pots, and more, and everything is extremely well priced. It's truly a plant lovers paradise, plus there's a koi pond! This was such a fun place to come to! There were quite a few people available to help answer questions. I loved that they had a nice variety of hard to find cacti. I wanted them all and I had a hard time narrowing down my selection. Value was pretty good. The bigger the plant, the higher the price, just like everyone else. But they had a nice selection of smaller plants and cacti if you don't mind waiting for things to grow. I asked a-lot of questions and the person I spoke with was very knowledgeable. I will definitely come here again. I love finding cacti and plants that are "weird" that you jut can't find at the big box stores. Come here if you're tired of seeing the same ole same ole, stuff everywhere else. They have a frequent shopper program and a free repotting of plant ( some exclusions) if you buy a plant and a pot. Except when I paid for the a pot and a plant the cashier didn't do it, and that was after I was told about it when I was still shopping. The staff and owner here are some of the coolest, most knowledgeable people when it comes to caring for plants. The plants are very affordable (often cheaper than you'd find in garden sections of big box stores!) and they offer free plant potting with purchase of a pot. I believe you can also bring in your own plants and have them repotted with purchase of some soil/pots if you don't feel comfortable transferring your own when they outgrow their pots. They also offer free classes on Saturdays - I attended a Carnivorous Plant class and I'm happy to say the knowledge gained has helped me keep my beloved pitcher going even when I previously killed every single plant I owned. I will always stop by and snag up a plant or two (and say hi to Bowser the snapping turtle) whenever I have the opportunity. read more

WOW! I actually wasn't planning to go, but I passed EcoGro on my way between Desert Survivors and Drutopia, saw the "Weird Plants" sign everyone had talked about, knew the store had great reviews, and immediately found a spot to U-turn. Though I hadn't been planning to stop, I couldn't NOT go in when it was right there, could I? There was ample parking out front, with a few displays. Most of the rest was inside. I went on a Saturday afternoon, and while it wasn't overly crowded, it was definitely a popular spot -- and I could quickly see why. First of all, the staff members were very friendly. Several different people came along to ask if I needed help, and all seemed quite knowledgeable. They showed me different products, answered my questions (even about plants I had at home and hadn't bought from there), and gave me advice based on my particular situation. One even took me into the room where they repot the plants and showed me their different soils, explaining the composition of each to me. (I'd had questions about whether to repot my plants or not when I got them home.) Many stores put their plants in bad, cheap soil in the hopes the plants will sell before the soil affects them and the customer will have to deal with it, but I was very impressed with what they used there. It also sounds like they grow most or all of their own plants in local greenhouses, which is important to me. For such a small space, I was very impressed by how much they fit inside. They had a variety of soil amendments and a good selection of planting supplies, several fish and turtle tanks, and both tropical houseplants and cacti/succulents. Best of all, they lived up to their "Weird plants" sign, providing me with several wish list plants, including two I've had an almost impossible time finding anywhere, either in person or online! (Variegated hoya Hindu rope and variegated string of pearls.) Yay!!! I was over the moon to find those, and for decent prices, too. Yes, some of the plants cost more than the cheap greenery you might find at a big-box hardware store's gardening center. But it did not feel unreasonable. The soil is very good instead of the soggy, cheap stuff the "competition uses." The plants are well-tended, neither flooded and rotting nor dry and wilting, and I didn't find any pests when I looked. Plus, many of the species are MUCH harder to find in big-box stores (or even most nurseries), if not impossible, so if you want something unusual, this is a good place for it. Many of the plants are not only very rare, but also slow-growers and/or tricky to care for, which takes a lot of greenhouse space, time, and know-how from workers, both to propagate them and then to keep them alive long enough for customers to buy them. These plants are also grown here, cutting down on carbon emissions and supporting regular, local people instead of corporations. So, yes, quite worth it! read more

This place is a grower's wonderland. Walking in from outside they had two large racks of herbs, veggie starts, and some larger plants. Inside is filled with beautiful and strange plants and amazing hydroponics. I picked up a wonderful variety of heirloom tomato plants including: beefsteak, celebrity, and sun gold! These varities are harder to find at conventional stores and will have me coming back for more. The customer service here is amazing. They take the time to discuss fertilizers with you, ask what you're growing, how you're growing etc. so they can give you the best advice. Pro-tip: They just started a loyalty program so sign up! What a wonderful local grower! I came in because I had ordered some trees from the "Trees for You" program from TEP. ExoGrow had the trees and they were so helpful in loading them into my car. We then had a long conversation about how to plant them at my home. I love that they went above and beyond and were able to spend 20 minutes educating me on best practices. I had no idea they had succulent plants here! As I was browsing I found this awesome little "pachy...." succulent. I've named him Benjamin. I had to have him and again, they helped educate me on how to best care for him. This included getting him a pot. I picked out a gorgeous pot and they even planted him for me. So awesome! Wow, this place is amaaaaazing. Brad and his team are doing great things in here. They really have some of the coolest plants I've never seen anywhere else and the prices are fantastic. I love going to places like this, where the folks who work there are super knowledgeable about all their inventory and can give you recommendations based upon your needs. They also have a variety of plAnts, from great native plants to indoor ones and even airplants! They've also repot your plant for free if you buy a plant and a pot. On top of being an excellent local business to buy plants from due to their selection, knowledge, and value, they also reuse donated boxes and packing materials and once you've safely transported your to your home, you can bring your boxes/materials back so they can be reused again. They also have a rewards club thing but I'm not super clear on the details! Love this place and will definitely keep going back to them for future plant purchases. read more

Eco Gro is a locally owned plant and aquaponics store with character. They sell an array of "weird" plants that are really fun to look at! Lots of different shapes, colors, sizes... Though the store is small, it's fun to browse through because of aquaponics system running through it. Fish live in the watering systems of the plants in the store, and the plants that grow from these little "ponds" are quite lovely. Staff is also so so kind and helpful, it just makes you smile! I came in with my own pot looking for a good plant to put in it. After describing where I'd be putting the pot and such, they helped me pick out a really neat succulent. They even potted it for me.... I'm excited to see it thrive! This is a great plant store; a wonderful example of what local business is about. A little bit hippie, a lot of scientific weird plant husbandry knowledge. Nice fellas and lady running the place. Being an orchid nut, I wanted to get into some of the native plants indigenous to the desert. Boy, did I. Bryan (Brian?) helped me choose some odd balls, some of which are threatened in the wild. I walked out (three times was it?) with trunk loads of professionally potted cacti and succulents for my backyard living space. The new arrivals are acclimating to my sunny location now and are gorgeous. Really- they do a nice job. Once used to being out in the blazing sun, the patio is going to look great, smell great, and hopefully help me propagate some of the rarities I picked up. I was driving away from downtown when I found myself detoured onto Saint Mary's/6th and saw green signs with "weird plants!" along the road. I had to check it out. Apparently this is a new location which opened in January. I was greeted and given a tour; including information about varieties of cacti. It looked like an U of A arboretum plant sale. They had water plants for sell and hydroponic stuff. Clearly everyone in the place has a passion for plants. I ended up purchasing a wolf berry bush ( similar to goji berry). When the winter ends I can't wait to go back. I just immediately felt like I was in good hands and signed up to be on the mailing list. Also with the food plants that produce they sell, there was talk of fun events coming up in the summer involving fruit they grow. I suggested they make goji berry sorbet! We shall see. They have a YELP check in deal, so if you are interested in picking up fertilizer, soil supplements, or plants they give you 10% off. Eco Gro is a great nursery and my favorite place to buy plants in Tucson. Almost all of the succulents, cacti, and air plants I have at home I bought at Eco Gro. It's a smallish store, but the selection is great. Though you can get "normal" plants here, herbs included, I feel like this place stands out because of their selection of "weird plants." I have bought multiple gifts for friends because the plants are so unique. I recently bought my boss a glass dome with air plants and they even gave me free white gravel. They also have a nice selection of reasonably priced pots (including talavera) and they will re-pot your goodies for free. The staff here is exceptional. They don't just hire any sales person to work there. Everyone I've talked to is a bona fide plant expert willing to communicate their expertise. I went this weekend and showed an employee a pic of a succulent I had bought there that I was concerned about, he immediately diagnosed the problem (overwatering) and told me how to proceed in the upcoming months since it was in the reproducing stage. WOW. The selection together with the service and prices makes this a 5-star place. I just moved from the East Coast, and figured I would embrace living in the desert by getting some desert plants. But I'm embarrassingly ignorant about what grows in the desert and how to take care of desert plants. I went into Eco Gro thinking I would just browse and not buy anything, but I was so blown away by their selection, especially of rarer succulents, that I couldn't help myself. Brad came up and asked if I needed any help, and I told him my specific needs: I needed cute desert plants that can grow in pots, mostly in shade, and since I travel a lot, don't need much maintenance but will generally be OK on their own. In short, I'm a horrible person! He immediately pointed out some small succulents that I hadn't even considered, and pulled out his phone to show me some images of them when they flower and grow larger (sometimes it's hard to figure out which of the little plants to get because you have no idea what they grow to look like). He also encouraged me to check out the discount rack where they have featured plants for 25-40% off. I love employees who encourage you buy cheap! My favorites were cacti that had been grafted on other cacti, so they looked very unique. On top of that, since they only sell their specialty succulent/cactus potting mix (coconut husks + gravel + vermiculite) in huge two gallon bags, he gave me a little starter bag for free that would be plenty for my four small plants (which totaled $19). He also said if any of my plants ever start to look a little sick, bring them back and they'll diagnose. Cactus doctor! Amazing! It's this type of treatment of customers that will definitely have me coming back, and bringing my plant-loving friends back. Also they have fresh-baked cookies at the register.
