I made reservations for Valentines Day, a 3 course special was offered for $100 a couple. The special included 2 glasses of champagne* (I found out they actually dont carry champagne only sparkling wine from Italy or Spain, not a big deal but the waiter didnt seem to get that if its not made in France, its not really Champagne) I arrived 30 min early so I enjoyed a dirty martini at the rooftop bar and my wife had a glass of reisling. Both were good and the views were romantic given St Louis just had a significant dusting of snow. The V day menu special included a kale salad, seared scallops, lamp chops and shank and a dessert. I also ordered the onion bread..its fantastic. The portions were served for a couple so each course came out on 1 plate. My wife ended up sliding over and just sat next to me rather than across and it helped make it more intimate and romantic. Everything was very well prepared, the staff were very helpful and welcoming. Everyone from the Valet to the Hostess and Waiter were very attentative. We actually were seated in Joe Edwards' (owner) regular table in the back corner so we had a very private setting and great view of the eclectic art and groovy atmosphere. As a St Louis native, I'm glad this place exists. Attached to the Moonrise Hotel, this place is quirky, artistic, modern yet salutes the history of space with its various memorabilia and space themed art and decor. I've been here in the past for my Thanksgiving buffet and it was wonderful. But this time it was a miserable experience, and I would never do it again. My husband and I went with our bill being a total of $170.00 (our tip was automatically added on a two top) for the buffet(x2)/soda/tea. We had to wait over 10 minutes to be seated by the host. The buffet was filled with burnt & cold food. They couldn't keep up with filling the trays. The ran out of plates & silverware at one point. The only thing worth eating was the ham & cajun turkey at the carving station. ONLY because it was hot. I had to get up four times to ask for service. I had to ask for silverware, a refill (TWICE), another fork for dessert, & our bill. Each time I had to ask for service the manager & the server and they both had the audacity to look at me like I was bothering them. Do yourself a favor on your wallet and DON'T reserve dinner here. I never will again. At $170.00-I could've cooked at home and it would've at least been hot & I would've had leftovers. read more

We had trouble making a reservation, three times they said they would call back and they didn't. We were seated promptly, but no one ever asked us if we wanted to order a drink. Although there was only one other couple in the restaurant, service was slow and the server forgot our appetizer order. The food was good, but not worth the trouble. read more

Came to the upstairs rooftop bar for drinks and apps and was blown away. The drinks are absolutely phenomenal. Lots of thought and artistry put into them. They were delicious and priced really well. We had a charcuterie board that came with meats, cheese, nuts and honey comb. The honey comb was really really great. Love the inside and the astronomy theme- the moon on the rooftop is cool too. Decided to try this place before the comedy show. I settled for a burger and fries because the menu selection was kinda on the short side. We also had the green tomatoes with pork belly. Surprisingly the food was really good! Just wish the menu had more to select from. The wife had a few cocktails that she thought were really good but seemed kinda small for the price. I wanted to update my review to include our visit to the downstairs bar during our stay at the Moonrise Hotel. My daughter and I stopped in for a nightcap after dinner and even though the place itself was empty (a Sunday night), we couldn't have had a better experience. Michelle was our bartender and she went out of her way to make our evening enjoyable and unique. She was wonderful about sharing her vast knowledge of bourbons and her favorites and the reasons why. We tasted so many different bourbons and had the chance to discuss what we liked and didn't like about them. I came home with a whole new list of ones to add to our home bar and we owe it all to Michelle who took the time to make sure we had a 5 star experience in her bar. She is definitely worth visiting when you are in the area! read more

Eh, I can't speak to the food, but the rooftop bars and drinks are pretty, pretty cool in my book. There's a giant revolving moon, hanging lamps that look like planets, tons of outside/open air seating and champagne by the glass. While I was there on a Thursday night there were plenty of spaces to stand or sit, but it wasn't empty - just uncrowded. The bartenders were quite pleasant and the drinks were reasonably priced. I'm no STL expert, but if you are staying at the Moonrise (which is an absolutely lovely hotel by the way) you could do worse than drinks at Eclipse. read more

I was nervous to try this restaurant after reading and hearing many negative reviews, but I had a good experience here late last night. Nothing else in the area was open and serving food after 11 pm on a Sunday. We were starving and very happy to find that the Eclipse kitchen was still open. In fact, they serve food until 2 am 365 days a year!! The decor and vibe reminds me of The Standard in West Hollywood. It's polished and hip but laid back, not stuffy - a nice change of pace from dives and diners and a good choice when you want to impress someone or when you're just feeling "money" a la Swingers. The cocktail menu was right up my alley. I had the Quantum Leap, made with gin and Chartreuse. I also had the mixed greens salad, which was simple and perfect, and the Petite Croque Monsieur with fries. The sandwich was not a true Croque Monsieur IMHO because there was no cheese on the outside/top, but it was still yummy. The French fries were soggy but not too greasy. They tasted good. My sandwich and fries also came with a lot of pickles: mini gherkins with a strong anise or fennel flavor. I loved them and ate them all (Snooki would be proud!), but I'm not sure so many pickles were necessary. Service was OK. It could have been faster and more attentive considering that the restaurant was not too crowded. The food is very taste. I love the romantic feel of the restaurant. You don't feel as though you are right on the hustle and bustle of the U-City strip. The menu is very small, even for a hotel restaurant, but they have a good bar section. If I was staying at the Moonrise, I probably would t eat here every day, only if I was short on time or got hungry at the last minute. The limited menu kind of makes you want to go eat in the loop. Horrible, horrible meal experience here. We were guests of the hotel. Front desk told me there were plenty of tables available in the restaurant. Went straight there. Hostesses said that all of the vast array of empty tables were reserved but we could get food at the bar tables too. Yay, we thought! (Why, why, WHY didn't we say no?) Ordered drinks. Ordered food. Waited for drinks. They finally arrived. Waited for food. Waited. Waited. Waited. Waited 45 minutes for two steaks (both of which were cooked incorrectly and one of which was prepared entirely wrong) and limp fries which we had no choice but to try to choke down because we were seeing a show at the Pageant. Which had already started. I managed to eat maybe a quarter of my undercooked, fatty, stringy steak. Did I mention that when the food finally arrived (after three requests from us, including one to the hostess stand as our server disappeared for almost 20 minutes) it didn't arrive with silverware or condiments? We had to chase down the server again for both. The manager comped the meal, and you know what? It wasn't worth it. It wasn't even good for free. The hotel is beautiful, and the restaurant is dragging it down. read more

RESTAURANT I stopped in one morning for breakfast while staying at the Moonrise Hotel. Service was fine and I had a four-top to myself, which was nice as I had room to read the paper and do the crossword without feeling crowded once my food arrived. I went with their cereal-crusted french toast and it was quite tasty and rich. The crispy coating gave it that extra something that many french toasts lack, and it was definitely closer to the dessert end of the spectrum. The serving was generous with three large slices and it arrived with a petite pitcher of syrup and a dusting of powdered sugar. BAR Stellar. You can't beat the ambience - sleek, future retro, lanterns that look like planets, a revolving moon, and seamless indoor to outdoor transition from bar to patio. The lounge was comfortable for sitting and talking, and while the bar was bustling I could easily hear my friend over the din. We had some excellent drinks - the names are escaping me (perhaps an Aviation for my friend and I had something with corpse in the title that was delicious). If I find myself at the Moonrise or a show at the Pageant again I wouldn't hesitate to stop by for a beverage on the rooftop. read more

I've eaten here twice and when I joined friends for a drink last night I recalled the many things I like about this place. For starters I was SO excited to see the Weinermobile outside. Probably a little too excited to be honest. But that shouldn't influence my review. The bar has a huge selection, but not a very extensive or adventurous menu (7-8 cocktails, no martini menu). The restaurant doesn't seem to have a cohesive theme yet, tapas and nibbles are far better than their entree choices. It's not bad, it's not great, it's on the pricey side. read more

First of all I applaud Joe Edwards for his efforts to continue and make Delmar the best street in all of St Louis to visit. Without his vision and efforts the street and U city would be a dilapidated rundown area and not the the engaging, diverse, and profitable place that it has become over the last 30 years. From Blueberry Hill, the Pageant, Tivoli, Bowling Alley and now Eclipse/Moonlight in addition to the Trolley cars coming soon; the man has pursued his wonderful, funky, eclectic vision for U City to it's fullest. That being said, there is no way that this restaurant deserved any of the awards recently won in the Riverfront Times and Sauce magazine. I give the Eclipse high marks for its interior, but the food is very average. I appreciate the efforts of the Chef to bring in some items that you can't find on most StL menus (bone marrow as example) but the food is lacking in layered levels of flavor. The bone marrow was disappointing, the Trout needed some acidity, the Caesar you could get at any Applebees, and most everything was on the cold side. The service was marginal at best. I did think that the Eclipse bar and the Moonrise bar were both being ran by a mixologist with a subtle but loving hand. I wish I would've enjoyed the food more, but much like the other reviewers I will still return to the Moonrise but I will skip the Eclipse and make my way to the bar. This place has lost an opportunity to be a real destination I think. It has a very cool vibe to the interior and if you venture over to the hotel lobby to use the bathroom you can get a sense of it's style also with the rainbow lighted steps. It reminds me of an Ian Schrager hotel (Paramount) I stayed at in NYC. We ordered the Peppered Fried Calamari, Lobster Bisque, Preserved Lemon Hummus, Moonlight Greens and the Butter Roasted Chicken and the Spheriod for dessert. While I am not a fan of calamari, it was actually pretty good. The bisque was probably good but I had talked so much after it arrived it was cold when i got to it, but it seemed to have good flavor although nothing special. The hummus had a nice twist to it with the lemon influence and the salad was fresh. The real dissapointment was the chicken, definitely dry on the outside and not all that juicy on the inside. I would not order it again, although the risotto and asparagus it came with tasted very good. The Spheriod for dessert was well made and if you like Key Lime, I would order it. While the waiter was pleasant, he passed a few chances to clear empty dishes from our table. Not something that would happen in a nicer restaurant. I will likely go back again because I really like the setting, and we happened to get a table with a street view, while although it decided to pour down for awhile, was still nice to have. The downpour also cancelled plans to spend time at the rooftop bar, which as it turned out, made for a very noisy time and made it hard to talk without straining your voice as the bar downstairs fillled up with all those from upstairs. read more

So the Eclipse Bar is the best bar in St. Louis. I can't really comment on the food, but Taste, Sanctuaria, Fortune Teller --these places don't touch the Eclipse Bar in terms of craftsmanship. You can tell a lot about a bar by its spirits, and the Eclipse Bar has everything, including the newest spirits on the market. They get them months before any of the other bars, and they study them intensely so they know how to use them. Seth runs the bar, and he's most of the reason this place is such an institution. He's the best bartender in St. Louis, and he hires the best bartenders in St. Louis. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of cocktails upon which he's innovated and built a personal relationship with the way spirits interact with each other. You won't find a better cocktail in this city. Just two tips: 1) Go here when you really want a perfect cocktail. They serve vodka redbulls etc., but this place isn't cheap, and it's a waste of an order. 2) Don't be stubborn, and be open to recommendations from your bartender. They know what they're doing here. read more

After the 1:00 a.m. closing time bell chimed on the U. City side of the Loop, a friend and I ventured into new territory on the other side of the dividing line at Eclipse on a recent late night drinking adventure. While the place was pretty crowded, we were able to get to the bar without a problem, and even snag a fabulously comfortable table to enjoy our beers at. It was a little bit too chilly to hit the rooftop this time around, so I'll save that for future visits. The place definitely has the visible Joe Edwards-touch with all kinds of space and moon related knick-knacks and other tchochkes in various display cases. One downside though, no pitchers of beer. But oh well. At least they have Boulevard Wheat on draught. I hope to return soon for dinner and/or a rooftop bar experience. read more

Went here with a friend for dinner one after she went and had been raving about it. There was hardly anyone there though, but it as a Monday. For starters we had their toasted ravioli which was great. You have the option of getting pork and fennel sausage ravioli or three cheese and spinach ravioli, but in a red sauce. I don't really like meat filled pasta so it was a nice surprise to see a vegetarian option on the menu. I had their flynn burger and fries... one word: awesome! Ground chuck with wild mushroom ragout, pancetta, smoked gouda and a bourbon demi-glace reduction. I don't see how you could go wrong with that. I couldn't eat all of it and if my leftover are half as good as they were the first time I will be happy. My friend got their special, the flynn burger II. It was in her words "The third greatest burger she had ever had", I think that says something. It had a lot going on and I don't remember all of it but it had avocado on it with a vinegar slaw. When she came here the first time she got their duck loaf (meatloaf made with duck meat!!!!) and said it was amazing. I would have gotten that, but I really really wanted a burger. At the end of our meal our waitress brought out a small dessert plate (oh yeah, we went here for my birthday) that had this rocky road type candy, peppermint dark chocolate bark and shortbread cookies. I don't like peppermint and chocolate together but the cary and cookies were great! Bonus for them is they apparently make their own marshmallows! Eclipse totally gives off the swanky vibe, like you're in for a treat, an upscale meal and great drinks. It's got that atmosphere about it. Then, you order. The food is SO not worth the price. Everything is priced to match the feel of the restaurant (upscale and trendy...). However, I couldn't believe how expensive the dishes were for the food we got. My salad was fine but nothing to write home about. My boyfriend got the ravioli, which was totally bland and pretty unappetizing just looking at it. My friend got the trout, which appeared dry and unappealing. Overall, all of our food was totally "meh" when we were expecting something much better. All in all, if you're in The Loop looking for a good place for a meal, there are several MUCH better options for you! They might be less expensive too! read more

We definitely had 5-star service and the unique atmosphere makes dining here special. And I was very impressed by the non-alcoholic cocktail the bartender made for me. But there were drawbacks. Bread in the breadbasket was a bit stale. The pickles in the pickle plate appetizer were way too acidic and too crunchy. The pork loin was undercooked (altho I hear that it is trend to undercook port these days - still cannot enjoy a pink piece of pork). The inside is nice and trendy, it was pretty calm for a saturday night. The main reason why I gave this place an 3 star review was because as we were leaving we saw the valet get a car for a woman who was clearly over served and was chugging a beer as she was waiting for her car. SVf...SERVICE, VIEW & food... We had a party of 6 at happy hour on Friday and never wanted for service. With libations and appetizers moving at the perfect speed from order to delivery. All I can do for the view is echo all the reviewers that came before me. The view was great but we timed it a little poorly as the best spots were taken by the time we got there. Scout it out early for one of the corner lounges. The lower case in my lead sentence and one star deduction was for the lackluster appetizers. The pretzel sticks and herb hummus apps were not bad but the toasted ravioli was really thumbs down. They really seemed more like frozen pizza rolls. I would really have liked to see a nice charcuterie selection. But I guess I would ALWAYS like to see a nice charcuterie selection. I just like to write 'charcuterie.' We will definitely return - just will make different food selections. read more

I will have to add a nice but incredibly slow breakfast to the list of meals. We joined some friends at the Eclipse for breakfast because they were staying at the Moonrise. Our boys were bouncing off the wall because the meal was so incredibly slow. I wish I could say this was the first time I've had a slow meal there. It is time to bring someone in to streamline the kitchen. The staff was friendly but acted slightly put out with the size of our table and our rambunctious little ones. Our kids were loud, and we tried our best to calm them. But, the glacial speed at which we were served made it a Herculean task. I generally find the staff to be friendly, but not among the best trained of wait staffs. I feel like few have had much experience waiting tables. Especially, regarding dealing with children. So, lesson learned (more than once). I won't go with my son in the future, which means we are unlikely to go again. I believe that there are many places that are adult places where children should not be brought. I'm all for it. But, a restaurant in a hotel should not be better able to deal with them. That is, unless the hotel doesn't want business from families. The food was good. Different members of the party tried different types of benedicts. All were yummy. The french toast was delicious (they make it with egg nog). Remember to ask for syrup that doesn't have rum in it for the little ones. read more

I'm surprised to see a few bad reviews on Eclipse here. I've had all positive experiences. But then again I haven't fought the crowds on a warm evening to get up to the rooftop. I've been on the roof a couple times and both were mostly positive. The atmosphere is cool and the view is wonderful. There is limited seating availabe, and the bar is well stocked albeit not the most inexpensive place for a drink. The food, everytime I've been there, has been great. Full disclosure, I'm friends with one of the chefs so I may be getting the best the kitchen has to offer. But I've ordered off every aspect of the changing seasonal menu and have enjoyed each dish. The drink menu is really good. It's not the best in the city as that title is held firmly by Ted Kilgore at Taste by Niche. But the menu at Eclipse is WELL above average and it seems as though they are making attempts at unique and quality cocktails and challenging the diners taste buds. The wine list is exceptional as even the Wines by the Glass are priced well and delicious. Overall I think this is a great place for a night out. I prefer to dine out during the week rather than the weekend because the service is usually better and more attentive and you don't have to fight the line of people trying to get on the roof if the weather is nice. read more

Great LOUNGE, not so great food! This is a wonderful place for large groups - there are huge clumps of couches, chairs, loveseats and tables - such a wonderful place to have large get togethers because everyone can sit in the same area and have conversation. I'm not impressed with the food though... definitely tastes like hotel food. Their drinks are not astronomically high, but this also isn't the place to go to drink on a budget. You would think a new supposedly "posh" boutique hotel would at least attempt to be friendly or provide any type of actual customer service. I was immediately greeted by the exceptionally RUDE and unfriendly doorman, BARRINGTON, who managed to alienate me within 3 seconds when I explained that the party I was with, whom had a hotel room booked AND had advanced reservations, including myself, were already on the rooftop lounge, he replied "LOTS of people supposedly have a party already upstairs, put your name on the waiting list." I was so taken off guard that I immediately left the establishment, but as I really did have reservations and a party waiting for me, AND a reserved room for the night, I had one of other members of the party leave the rooftop lounge to come to the ground floor to physically escort me upstairs, since BARRINGTON did not believe me. There were 8 members of our party, who also had experienced RUDE service and behavior on the rooftop lounge in my absence. We were all so irritated, we left, and went to Blueberry Hill instead. read more

We had managed to walk right into this place before a show at the pageant- I'm not sure if it's pricing is for the location- but we needed up getting focaccia-which was carmelized onion - bacon - heirloom tomatoes- there was maybe two pieces of a "caramelized onion" and the tomatoes were dark brown- so apparently they added the stuff and bake it? It just ended up being a block of bread with an essence of tomatoes... just thought fresh tomatoes would have been better- the drinks weren't bad - but not the best read more

The Eclipse Restaurant was a cool spot. We didn't actually eat here but did hang out at their rooftop bar. We started the night off with a few drinks beginning with the Blood of the Andes. It was delish! I think I stuck with that one for the entire night. The rooftop also had great music. I'd say 90s to now hip hop and R&B. It looked like there were two different DJs but the music vibe was pretty consistent. I will definitely be back! read more

This was once the best bar in St. Louis. I'm not kidding. In 2012, Planter's House had nothing on the Eclipse Bar. Can you believe that? A hotel bar was the best bar in St. Louis. I'd walk in, and I'd say, "Seth, make me something with a botanical gin and rose water," and in a matter of minutes he'd produce one of the best cocktails I'd ever had in my life. Seth is as of now heading things up at Olio. If you like good cocktails, good bread, and good hummus, I suggest you check it out. He's a genius. Eclipse Restaurant has had more than one genius bartender slip through its fingers. Tony moved on to Layla's in the Grove and on to I don't know where. It's still a fine bar, and the bartenders who work there are diligent and kind. They're not geniuses. The cocktails are nothing like what they were back when Seth was the leader. They're still very expensive and very hip, but I find myself going there less and less. The new cocktail bar at Blue Ocean Sushi has (ha ha) in my opinion eclipsed them. It's no secret that the Moonrise hotel is owned by Joe Edwards. My opinion is that Joe Edwards is a man who sometimes can't see the trees for focusing on the forest. He's built a beautiful hotel, and he's built a trolley system. He'll probably own the whole Loop one day. While he was doing this, he let bartenders who, in my opinion, are more talented than Ted Kilgore, slip through his fingers. I planned my sister's bachelorette party for this past weekend and made dinner reservations at Eclipse. We met at the rooftop bar of the Moonrise, then went down to Eclipse for dinner. I was somewhat worried after reading some reviews of the place, but I couldn't have been happier with the level of service we received, and the quality of drinks and food. There were about 18 girls in our party, and we were given 2 large tables in a somewhat separate room (there were other people in there, but it felt pretty private). We had a server for each table, and I was very impressed by their attentiveness and accuracy, given we had such a large (and somewhat rowdy) party. They even let us get individual checks, which made everything so easy. I'm so happy with the service, I can't say it enough. The drinks: I stuck with wine, but I had sips of other's drinks to try, and all of the cocktails I tried were outstanding. The Plantation had a mix of gin, grapefruit juice, and basil that I would order again and again and will try to recreate at home. The Italian Greyhound was also a gin and grapefruit juice concoction, that was very refreshing and easy-drinking. Next time I'll take the hubs to try out the great-sounding bourbon cocktails. The food: Half the people at my table ordered the veggie ravioli, which was stuffed with Boursin cheese and was smothered in a fresh tomato sauce with big slices of roasted tomatoes and vegetables. It far exceeded my and everyone's expectations. Most of the other people at my table got the chicken, which looked great and everyone seemed to enjoy. I know one other person ordered the steak, and said it was fantastic. I think Eclipse has stepped up it's game, and people giving it negative reviews should give it another chance, even if just for the drinks. PROS: -Loop has ample parking -Decor is modern, bar is attached, can accomodate large parties -Can almost always be seated immediately, they have a really large space -reasonable price for the portions (i consider them to have pretty large portions) CONS: -menu changes to the cheese plate appetizer! I was very sad to see they had changed the cheese appetizer plate. This was undoubtably my favorite dish here last time I was here. They use to serve it on a marble slab and it had more fruit and a very nice selection of cheeses. I did not have the same experience as the scott, but overall it was not exceptional nor exceptionally bleak. It was just okay. The decor was interesting, though some practicality might have been sacrificed for looks. The place was unusually empty for a Friday lunch, with my group being one of three dining. I had the grilled chicken club with the fries. After about 10 minutes of waiting, the server came out with our food. After taking a bite of the sandwich, it didn't taste very different from any other club at any other establishment. I decided just to take a bite out of the chicken to see if it had any flavor. To my surprise, there was lemon, pepper, and a handful of other flavors that were hidden behind a veil of honey mustard spread on the bread. I found that eating the sandwich separately brought more satisfaction compared to eating everything as a sandwich. The fries were oily and soggy. I'm not sure if that's how they were supposed to be, but I don't like those kinds of fries. Think homestyle soggy fries, and that's what you get. Overall it was an experience worth having, but unless others are dying to go, I don't think I'll be back. read more

This is the new restaurant in the new Moonrise Hotel in the Delmar Loop. We went for dinner on the 4th of July and had an APPALLING experience. After we found bugs in one of our waters and the waiter failed to apologize much less show any remorse, the food took nearly an hour to be prepared, was extremely expensive, and not very good. The steaks were overcooked, the fish tasted too fishy, and our waiter was a jerk. Not only did he not apologize for anything when we complained but he would hover over our table and stare at us without asking if we needed anything. I realize this sounds over the top but seriously, the food was mediocre at best and was extremely expensive. If I didn't feel so bad for our awkward waiter I wouldn't have tipped. Not planning on going back and I'll say this is the first letdown I've felt from a Joe Edwards project. read more

I stayed at the Moonrise hotel and had 3 meals here....a lunch, dinner and a breakfast. Honestly, it's a bit pricey but then again, it's hotel food so what do you expect? The food isn't bad at all. I don't really recall what I ordered but I don't recall my experience being really negative. The only thing I'd complain about is the pasta with the flat noodles was tasty but a bit oily. That's about it. For breakfast, I had a yogurt parfait and it was pretty good. Nothing much to rave about but for the most part, I enjoyed it. read more
