Today I decided to trust the stars on Uber Eats. Eclectic Cafe has an 4.8 rating so it was a must try. I ordered a combination lunch/dinner with Oxtails, Curry Shrimp, rice & peas, and cabbage. When my food arrived I was shocked to see curry chicken instead of shrimp. I REALLY wanted something besides chicken! I'm not allergic and it's just a preference for today so I didn't complain. The food is absolutely delicious. It's been a min since I ordered a Caribbean meal and was pleased in the DC area. The meat was tender ok both the oxtails and chicken. EVERYTHING was flavorful. I also liked that the sodas are $1.99 for a 20 fl oz. So many places are ripping you off so this was definitely a plus. My only dislike is that it comes in a container that's not sectioned. I particularly do not care for my food to touch AT ALL but it came without much damage so I could still eat it lol. They deserved the 4.8 stars on Uber Eats so they easily got a 5 stars from me on here! Try it! read more

Service is impeccable which is why I didn't want to leave this review. I ordered the special the Turkey wings with Mac and cheese. Also ordered water and blueberry muffin, unfortunately the only thing that was good was the water. The Turkey wings were cold and Mac and cheese wasn't cheesy and lacked flavor. The Turkey wings gravy had flavor the wings lacked it. The blueberry muffin wasn't sweet and good. Returned back to the cafe because of the temperature of food which lady at the front heated it up and when i told her about the Mac lacking seasoning she gave me salt and pepper i asked her to throw out the muffin she offered me cake. I wasn't acknowledged by the older male cashier that was clearly annoyed with the customer before me and her young children. I ordered curry shrimp for myself and chicken curry for my mom. I also requested extra gravy. When my order was ready, a woman emerged from the back and began packing my food in bags. While doing so, she looked up, shook her finger at me and said "I don't usually give extra gravy but I did this time only" to which I responded "oh.. okay...". My mother and I both agreed that while the food was seasoned well, it definitely WAS NOT curry... She could have kept her extra mystery gravy after all. The restaurant food taste is no longer the same. Although the new owners has better customer service than the previous owners, the food is HORRIBLE. I've been patronizing Eclectic Cafe for the last 10yrs or so. The establishment recently changed owners... I'm elated to say that the new owners kept most all of the signature Jamaican cuisine that Eclectic was know for, and expanded the menu with other great entrees and deserts. I recently learned that Ricky from Rick's Cafe is now the head cook at Eclectic. Kudos to the new owners and staff for taking this establishment to greater heights. Keep up the good work and continue to serve your community in the upstanding way in which you currently do. Eclectic Cafe is a fantastic restaurant. The food is delicious and prompt. The customer service is great and friendly.

Jerk chicken w Mac and cheese and cabbage... good portion size for the price (about $8) and its wayyyy better than expected (do yourself the favor). Unfortunately 2/3 times I've had it, they put in plantains but that one time without it had me in my feelings. You can call ahead, but they won't start making it until you get to the register. Sometimes the veggie patties a little crispier than desired, so just keep a watchful eye. I found out you can add spinach to the smoothies, if you on your health kick- which is dope bc no where else on the street offers even remotely healthy options. It tasted just like a bland brown stew. b) Then the rice n peas (red beans n rice) were straight from the Goya box or had Goya Spanish seasonings in it. No coconut milk or parminto seeds/powder was used at all. They threw in a sprig of tyme to try and mask the fact that it was Spanish rice. Again being from trinidad my grandmother is black dominican n i know what Spanish rice taste like. (Americans call parmintos all spice) c) and to make it worse the rice was very very dry. d) I can say that my children loved the beef patties I didn't get to taste one because they ate them all. This food place is located at the bottom of DOES building in DC. The food here is a miss or hit. They don't season their food well which is very surprising being as though they are true Jamaicans. Honestly, the food is not the worst part here it is the customer service. The older gentleman is very rude and obnoxious. I can understand to some degree why he may act the way he does because of which the environment the business is located in, but that still does not take away having good customer service skills. They do not allow you to even drink outside water/ drinks from other places in this place and don't even think about sitting down for a few minutes without ordering something because they will scold you so much so that it makes you want to leave and not anything. I believe the chef is suffering from attention deficit hyperactive disorder. I just had the chicken and waffles and the waffles were burnt. The chef a young black woman seemed distracted at the time she was preparing the food. She was having a conversation with another employee who was working at the register and she was talking about something that had nothing to do with the task at hand. This behavior threw off her timing as she was multitasking at the time and as a result she burned the food. I work in the education field and I have seen this behavior before in children and adults. People with ADHD struggle with fast paced detail oriented professions be it in food, healthcare, finance or any industry. read more

I was in the area on my way to see a friend when I came across (a hidden gem) around 5pm. I was pretty skeptical. this was my first time visiting I didn't know what to order. (menu had a lot of options) so I ordered a small dish of curry chicken that came with three sides for under 9 bucks. It can be as simple as getting change for a $5 dollar bill for the metro because everyone knows you can't use no more than a dollar. I walked in Eclectic Cafe to get change for a $5 bill so I can get to work and just like everyone else is saying the (old african american man) was extremely rude. After I tried to explain to him that I needed change he called me (stupid) because he was mumbling while talking to me, and that I couldn't understand him. After a few moments later, things got heated and I finally asked him can I buy something so I can get change for the metro and he was still rude and being belligerent and it was not needed. Ladies and gentlemen, I would not recommend eating at this restaurant if you want to be treated disrespectfully or if you wanna get food here and can't be served. Update to my previous post. A friend of mine who patronized Electic Cafe based on my recommendation on 4/15/17, received horrible customer service. He was angrily asked to leave because he wanted to wait for his guest to arrive to order food, and a staff member said he must order food or leave because loitering is not allowed. How is that loitering? Last time I checked, people wait to order in restaurants all the time. I can not condone this type of service. read more

He refused to do anything with her order and told her to leave the store. I told him how his customer service was bad and that we pay him everyday and shouldn't be treated like this.
