Ordering pho takeout from this place, was absolutely the most frustrating and time consuming experience ever. I will never order from this place again if I'm on a time crunch. I called and placed my order for 3 simple, one meat pho's at 12:03pm, was told it'll be ready in 25-30 mins. I order take out from various places including other pho restaurants and it usually takes 15 mins, tops. I ordered from here since it's super close to my house, I'm really sick with a cold and was thinking about if I should order from pho sate since their pho is superior but didn't order from pho sate bcuz I didn't want to drive that far. Man, I wish I did. Long story short, I didn't leave this place with my pho until 12:55 pm. I get they were busy during lunch time, they only had one food runner, one waiter and I'm assuming one cook. You would think that getting food that took this long would be piping hot and maybe they would've added some more meat or comped something. Nope. Def not the case. Only had 4 pieces of meat and the pho was luke warm. I was so hungry, sick and tired by the time I got home, I just sucked it up and ate it. The only positive thing from this place was the waiter apologized for the long wait and did separate my dipping sauces like I asked - hence the 2nd star for him. Omg the food is always on point. The lunch menu is great. You get a full bowl a side of fried roll and your choose of tea or soda. The staff is suppper friendly. This is the perfect spot for a hot bowl of pho specially in the winter. Just writing the review makes me want a bowl. read more

I've lived very close to Old Town Fairfax for 13 years, but have never thought to explore the many eateries the place has to offer. I one day passed through the place, like how I've done bajillion times, but East Wind place caught my eye mostly because I saw that it is a Vietnamese place. The name and the cuisine seemed like a paradox and I was skeptical at first until I saw the yelp reviews and decided to give it a try myself. I went in for the lunch special which goes on from 11am-3pm. Right after I was seated, I was given a bowl of what I think are rice crackers to munch on while I wait for my order. They were light, airy, salty, and scumptious! These were a very pleasant surprise because I don't think I read any reviews on here that mentioned the rice crackers. I was only going to eat a couple because I wanted to save myself for the actual meal, but they were so addicting and so light that I ate them all up without feeling any different than before (which also could be very dangerous for those who are dieting like me oh no). I ordered the Old Town pho which is an additional $1 to the $7.50 lunch special. The pho came with the usual side of bean sprouts and basil and LEMON, which I thought was very unusual. I have tried many pho places and never have I tried lemon with pho (usually it's lime). I've always wondered if there's a big difference in taste between lemon and lime, but the lemon juice squeezed in the broth really did make it more sour and tart than the conventional lime. I think I might prefer the lime over lemon in my pho, but it's not that great of a distinction. Besides the lemon, the broth was flavorful and there was a lot of meat, which delighted the carnivore in me. I wish the Old Town included tripe, as I prefer tripe to tendon, but whatever. The pho was still very very good. After the pho, the waiter came out with flan for dessert (which I did expect but pretended to be surprised upon its arrival because I am a great actor hahaha). It was my first flan so I don't know what to compare it to/what the standard for a good flan is, but I thought it was okay. It was too sweet for my liking, but I think that might just be what flan is. Overall, I really like this place and am glad I found such a good pho place that is so close to my house. It also made me learn to not take my surroundings for granted and to explore what's near and familiar to me because you never know what good things are right in front of your nose! read more

My family and I love East Wind. We tried the Vietnamese Crepe (Banh Xeo), Banh Mi, Beef Pho, Summer Rolls and Spring Rolls and everything was superlative. Literally everything we tried was the best of everything that we have tried at any other Vietnamese restaurant in the area. It is worth noting that we all just went to Vietnam in June and have been very picky since we got back with the quality of food that we have been eating at various restaurants in the area and were pleasantly surprised that this little restaurant in Fairfax City had everything that we were looking for. Prior to trying these dishes at East Wind, we definitely had different spots that we liked to get different dishes from. Cute restaurant nestled in the heart of Old Town Fairfax behind GMU. It's actually quite large inside and feels like a mile hike to the restroom located in the back. The pho was ok, I've had worst. Ordered takeout, got the the scallops / shrimp vermicelli, and halfway through my meal, I realized the shrimp they gave me was completely raw in the center (See picture - this picture is just of one, but there were many more I found). I was pleasantly surprised to find a good Vietnamese restaurant in old town Fairfax, which means I no longer have to trek all the way out to Falls Church for Viet food. Win. They gave us rice crackers with spicy dipping sauces, which went really well together. We shared an order of spring roll (3 rolls), and a vietnamese crepe for appetizer. Both were delicious, especially the crepe, which was crispy, filled with juicy ingredients. For a light supper, you'd be satisfied just with a crepe order. The clay pot with beef was so good, and so was the grilled pork vermicelli. Get the mango sticky rice. So delicious. Some places make their sauce too sweet, but not here. Just the right amount. Came here for lunch the other day with a friend, and like other reviews say, the lunch special can't be beat! You get a choice of two summer/spring rolls as your appetizer, choice of pho/bun bo hue(my favorite), and a soft drink of your choice for 10.95! I've been here before, and each time the service is pretty good. They give you enough time to decide what to order without rushing you. I think the pho here is definitely one of the best in the fairfax area, especially during the times when I don't find myself wanting to drive 20 minutes to pho 50. Since I am vietnamese I usually try to avoid reviewing vietnamese restaurants because I always find something to nitpick at since I am a bit biased. I came here for lunch with my mother we ordered goi du du(papaya salad) with pork and shrimp for an appetizer. It was okay it didn't have the strong punch of flavor like the other papaya salads I've had. Shrimp chip rounds weren't stale so that's a plus. We also ordered goi cuon(garden roll) it looked nicely wrapped however it bothered me that it wasn't a completely closed roll the bottom was open so when you bit into it the noodles and everything else fell out the other side. The noodles themselves were a thicker vermicelli which had a springier texture that I'm not really a fan of just because it just has a strange mouth feel. The peanut sauce wasn't bad your typical hoisin peanut butter mix a bit liquidy for my taste(but i expect that only because most restaurants don't make a thicker sauce). I did find it a bit strange that we had to ask for chili sauce since there was no condiments on the table unlike most Vietnamese restaurants. For our entrees we both ordered the Vermicelli w/ Grilled Pork,Shrimp and Springroll. Again it had that springy vermicelli which had a strange mouth feel. The bowl I think was larger then the portion itself for its price. There wasn't a lot of meat and there was 1 small springroll for $11. The spring roll was a bit on the soggy side with a small bit of crunch. Overall: The food is decent nothing too exciting or new. $11 for a bowl of vermicelli? I guess its because we are in the City of Fairfax so the price is a bit inflated but if i really wanted a decent bowl of bun then I might as well drive to Eden Center because the quality of the food is far better and its cheaper. Service:mediocre there was no one in the restaurant and it took them a while to bring extra sauce when they figured out we were sharing the appetizers.We had to ask for condiments that should've just been brought out just in case. There is plenty of room to social distance and eat safely during the pandemic and at any other time. We love the grilled beef on vermicelli. This restaurant is amazing. I cannot tell you how many times I have gone back and never been let down once. Customer service is EXCELLENT, I always leave feeling like a pampered princess. They give free rice chips and free dessert. The owner and waiters are all very kind and considerate, and go out of their way much more than other restaurants to make sure their customers are happy. I can already think of 3 examples on 3 separate occasions: they added rich cream to my Thai iced tea (see photo), they colored my lemonade pink and surprised me, and they gave me a large pho with brisket and flank for lunch special price (because I'm a regular). I really recommend their pho, fried rice, and Vietnamese omelette if you like eggs! Their pho is by far the best pho I've had in Virginia, and it rivals only Pho Saté in east falls church/Pho75 in Rosslyn, in my book. Came here on a whim looking for a good pho lunch, this was the only one in the area where people weren't including caveats like "it's good, but" when it came to the pho. Turned out to be a great choice, and I think I'll be returning for lunch more regularly. They brought out some rinds and sauce for an appetizer, which was unexpected and good with their hot sauces. The food came very quickly (as I find to be the case with many other Vietnamese restaurants), but man. I don't know if it's the freshness of the ingredients or just higher quality, but this was some of the most flavorful pho I've ever tasted. I always add all the vegetables to help with the flavor, but from the get go the soup was tangier and richer than your average pho. Noodles were good, thinner than most but really flavorful. Chicken was good - thin sliced, which is not what I'm used to. Overall it was spicier to me than most pho, which I like. I also ordered a pot of tea, which tasted fine (I always forget there are no sweeteners). Then at the end, they brought a complimentary flan dessert! That was unexpected and a step up from your average Vietnamese restaurant. Service was good and fast overall, and they were all very polite. For the price this is a terrific lunch special. Bummer of an experience. Arrived on a Saturday evening at 7pm. Server told us they were "out of grill items" - leaving choices of pho or vermicelli dishes. Out of grill items or wanting to clean the grill? And what are grill items? They were also out of the "free" shrimp chips that have been mentioned in other reviews. Seafood Pho was mostly broth with minimal protein and not a whole lot of noodles. Scallops (maybe 5) were teeny tiny bay scallops, four shrimp, and maybe two ounces of squid. Same with meatball pho. Let's start with the food. The pho is great (broth: check; meat: yum; vegetables: nomnomnom). The Vietnamese coffee (condensed milk!) will wake you up and is delicious. Great place if you enjoy pho. I don't often eat Vietnamese but I sometimes have cravings. Most places aren't quite as good, but their restaurant is fairly upscale, the food is good and the staff is friendly. It's also not too expensive. I remember the front of the restaurant being really cold in the winter, so a seat in the back is best when the outside temperatures are below freezing. read more
