I should start by saying that we live about 45 minutes away from East side pockets in a different state and we drive that length just for their food. I always get the beef steak kebab wrap and my husband always gets the falafel and Gyro combo. The pita that these guys use is phenomenal! It's not too thick so that it becomes extra filling it's the right amount of thickness for the amount that they put in there. Making the best of its College Hill location and frequently cited as one of Providence's best Eateries it was the day after Christmas that three guests visited East Side Pockets, the lack of University students cutting down on lines though the shop certainly was not hurting for business. Small in size but sporting a big reputation, its mention in Esquire's 2008 "The Best Sandwiches in America" hanging proudly on the wall, East Side Pockets offers traditional Middle Eastern Cuisine by way of counter-service, the close confines and concise menu expediting ordering while a kitchen in full view works with fervor turning out Falafel, Kebobs, Wraps, Soups and Salads all made on-site. Fairly priced and focused, a variety of Plate Dinners and Platters allowing diners to enjoy variety at less than $10 a head, it was by way of one $9.03 container that three Dips, Salad, Bread and Rice with Lentils joined Falafel plus Gyro Meat, the Chickpea Fritters cleverly designed with a hole to cook all the way through while at the same time remaining virtually Grease-free. We've come here a few times over the years and I thought that I had previously done a review. Anyhow, here it is: The last time we were here we ordered a chicken wrap and falafel plate. Both of these were prepared fresh. You can watch these guys grill your meat and cut up your veggies right in front of your eyes. Veggies were fresh, sauces tasty and the falafel was impressive - crunchy and not greasy. Quantities are very generous and the price? Very reasonable. The food is also prepared quickly. The wraps, salads, plates, and of course just the plain falafels are great. I also love getting a side of babaganoush to go anytime I stop in. They also sell falafels by the piece if you're just in the mood for a small snack. East side is great because service is extremely quick. You watch them make your wrap in front of you, pay and go (kind of like subway). It can get crowded during lunch and dinner hours, but the line moves quickly. Love East Side Pockets when I want a quick, inexpensive meal. I always get the same thing - the Dolma wrap. It is the perfect combination of savory and tangy. Just make sure you are sitting over a table when you eat it because it is messy, but SO worth it! My reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the parking. It is a nightmare to find a spot to park, but it is just part of doing business on Thayer St. unfortunately. If the parking was easier, I would be here all the time! read more

Honestly, it was pretty much the ONLY place for a falafel sandwich on Thayer St. It's insanely popular with the line going out the door during most lunch hours. The sandwiches are large. The ingredients are fresh and everything is made to order which is great. However, the day I saw them mixing the "hot sauce" using ketchup, I was done. I always thought it was a little weird, but what did I know? And the falafel itself isn't that great. Good, but not outstanding. Yum! This is perhaps the best falafel wrap you can get in the area. It can get quite busy, even outside of lunch hours. There's always a line when I come here but it's worth the wait! My favorite is the chicken and falafel combo wrap. I get everything on it. My only complaint is their hot sauce is not spicy at all. It would be great if their hot sauce had a kick to it. The staff is friendly, the prices are reasonable, and everything is generally clean. The wraps are also huge (I can never finish a whole wrap in one sitting!). I'll definitely be back. read more

Walking up Thayer Street, the green sign and transparent windows make East Side Pockets hard to miss. My cousin attended Brown a couple of years back and he has always said that East Side Pockets was his favorite place to eat. For my entire first year here, I didn't really bother going here since I was on meal plan. Now that I'm off meal plan, East Side Pockets is no doubt within the top 3 places to eat on Thayer. Their food is affordable, delicious, and filling... just what college students need. One of the best deals there is simply an order of falafel. For just $4 you can get 6 falafels, bread, and sauce! Enough for me? Not even close. But enough for a third of regular adults? YES. My favorite thing there is probably the gyro wrap. The combo wrap with chicken and falafel is also pretty good. I've recently tried their baklava with cashews that are 75 cents per pop. It's the perfect sweet finish to a great meal. Next on my list of items to try: their "meat pie." :) The staff is friendly and quick. There is a small eating area but people usually get take out anyways so big deal. 5 stars all day every day!!! read more

My last few experiences here left a bad taste in my mouth. Not for food quality but for customer service. Hubby & I went on the evening of the time change not being aware. The older man running the place was so unpleasant & miserable. He talked right in front of customers miserably saying "lock the doors if we need to!" & was pretty unpleasant to order food from. That's fine, it was 2am so I would've been crabby too. The icing on the cake was the kid on the register charging me & pocketing $4 of my change which I didn't realize until I was halfway home & all my change wasn't accounted for. That's bad business! I went back another time after & made sure to count my change, everything was accounted for this time. I feel there's a new trend of food service people stealing part of your change as this happened to hubby at the Dunkin' on killingly in Johnston as well. Been coming here for years but this is my first review. Used to come here more often when I lived on the East Side but it'd been a few months since my last visit. Got out of work at ~9:30pm and of course in PVD these days most good options are closed by then. Thank god for East Side Pockets. Impossible to go wrong here. My go-to has always been the falafel pocket with everything on it but I've gotten chicken, gyro, and kofta before and they're all fantastic. The plates (whatever protein you choose with jedra, Syrian bread, and a small salad) is a good option if you're hungrier and need more food. All the baklava options are great too. All employees were masked properly, wearing gloves as they always have. They have a sign on the front door to only allow a certain number of customers in at a time, which I appreciated. Service is always efficient. Sad that the prices have steadily been rising since I first moved to Providence in 2016 but that won't stop me from continuing to eat here. read more

East Side Pockets is one of my favorite places ever. I went to Brown and ESP was a staple in my diet when I was off meal plan and didn't want to cook - I'd go at least 2-3 times a week. Whenever I go, I always order the same thing - the chicken kofte combo pocket, with both hummus and red sauce and only lettuce and tabouleh. Absolutely amazing. The saltiness of the Kofta is perfectly complimented by the less salty but still flavorful grilled chicken. The whole thing blends together for an amazing flavor combo in every bite. Their falafel is also perfect, with an amazing amount of crunchiness and flavor. Not to mention they're HUGE. read more

My jeans have front pockets, and back pockets, but they don't have side pockets, so I was very curious as to what sort of pockets were on offer at ESP. I always thought ESP was some form of Claire Voyance (she's a girl I used to know), but apparently it's this place in Prove ID Ends. One of my least favourite food experiences in town, largely because the ratings are insanely high. One of the more overrated places I have ever eaten, anywhere. If a place serving this sort of bland, tasteless, soulless Americanized versions of some generic and spiceless Mediterranean-Middle Eastern food can have an overall four star rating after hundreds of reviews, it suggests that the standards in Rhode Island are low. Which is not the case. After trying Lulu's and Spike's and Sombrero and other spots, there are some gems in RI. I would encourage friends to avoid this one. It's on Thayer St, which is the main party street for the masses of rich and semi-rich college kids in this beautiful Ivy League city. It's a little overpriced, and packed out the door with drunk people until the small hours. I found the service to be even worse than the food. The food was just bland, the service was downright rude. The only reason it gets 3 stars is that I try not to give any place less than 3 if it's family owned, unless I have a truly nightmarish experience, and despite this place being obscenely overrated, it wasn't so bad that I have to break my own rule. Yes! Everything in East Side Pockets is worth eating if it's Middle Eastern food you are looking for. They have the best falafel in Rhode Island, and the hummus served with it is creamy and delicious. Their Bubba Ghanouj is out of this world, and their Kefta made with lamb has great flavors which I like served over their amazing jedra rice pilaf. Their marinated chicken is delicious and a great option for a sandwich that can be topped with their fresh ingredients. Don't order the Greek Salad, because it is not Greek at all. Tossing crumbled feta on lettuce is a big no-no for me, and you would never see that in a Greek Restaurant or Greece, they serve what is now the Americanized version. But, don't let that stop you from going there and ordering what they do best, Middle Eastern food. So if you order true Middle Eastern food at East Side Pockets, you will be pleased if all you want is a sandwich. But if you are really famished, order their plates, you will be happy you did, and definitely not leave hungry. Five Stars! read more

I have done the Greek salad with chicken and falafel, the jedra plate with chicken and dolma, the gyro, and so many of the appetizers. DONT leave without getting a box of their HOMEMADE pita chips and tzatziki side. The people who work here are hardworking and super nice! I sat down and ate once and the ambiance was fine, just a few booths in their small space... I usually take to go! If you need to sit though, there is that option. This is the best place to get falafel. Their falafel is always on point! I usually get either the falafel wrap or the falafel plate which comes with some tasty jedra (rice & lentils). The veggies they use for the wrap/plate is always fresh and crispy. Their hot sauce, hummus, and tahini are all delicious also. The lines here are often long, but the workers are very efficient so the line moves through pretty quickly. Only downside to coming here is having to look for parking which is especially difficult during the school year on busy nights. I'm usually always able to find parking somewhere, but just have to walk a bit to get here. read more

I was only in Providence for only 8 hours, and I am very glad that i happened to stop by this place for a bite. It's located on a bustling Street near brown University. So you'll see a lot of students just roaming around this area. The workers are very welcoming and extremely friendly. They made me feel like I was at home. I honestly didn't know what to get and the lady suggested I get over of her favorite dish. I went along with it and very glad I took her advice. I think I got the wrap #8? It was extremely flavorful and filing. I had such a difficult time to finish it since I got full almost 3/4 through the wrap. The meat were juicy and the veggies were fresh. The sauce they were using was out of this world. Fucking amazing. As I was about to leave, I went up to her and said Thank you. As a token of her appreciation, she handed me a baklava???
