    Turkey Chutney Sandwich
    Michael P.

After reading many raving reviews, I have 1 word after trying it myself, "weak". Nothing was "bad" per se, but it just wasn't very good. When I go to a sandwich shop, I expect a nice packed sandwich that could actually make a meal. This sandwich had like, 2.5oz of "roasted in-house Turkey". It was no different than slightly thick turkey cold cuts you can get at your average supermarket deli. My wife and I both got sandwiches, and the total menu price is $11.50 each.. For $23 total, I can buy all the ingredients and more and actually make a sizable sandwich (or 4). Nothing on this sandwich was very special, the mayo had a little mustard painting it yellow (maybe a touch of curry powder? Couldn't taste any but could have been in there), the "mango chutney" was basically just a syrupy spread- it had no discernable mango chunks in it, and the sandwich was supposed to be hot... I was hoping that meant a grilled bun or something? It seemed like they popped it in the microwave for 45 seconds and called it a day. I don't know, based on this sandwich I'm not clamoring to try their other ones. On a positive note, I did like the space and theme of the joint. I think this place does well purely because it's an easy spot for the workers in downtown Providence. If you really, really, enjoy cold cut sandwiches and can't be bothered making them on your own, you'd probably like this place. If you want something that makes you go "how on earth did they do that!? It's amazing!", keep looking- or at least don't get the Turkey Chutney.

I stopped here to grab a sandwich during lunch. The place was packed and I had thought I should have ordered online. However the line moved pretty quickly and the food came out faster than I thought it would. The sandwich was delicious. I will definitely be back for lunch.

1/2 of the Ultimate Grinder on a Buono's Bakery sub roll

Visited today with one of my RI Food Fights sandwich coupons and was lucky to snag a parking spot right in front of the shop. Was greeted very warmly and had a choice of several sandwiches that could be ordered with my coupon. I decided on the Ultimate Grinder, and it did not disappoint. Made on a fresh Buono's Bakery sub roll, the meats and cheeses complemented each other perfectly. The real standout however, was the house made sun dried tomato/banana pepper relish which added great flavor with just enough spice to the sandwich. I should add that the service was very fast as well. I paid for my order and was about to sit down to wait, but the order was already ready! I also got a pistachio & white chocolate chip cookie which was soft and a little gooey - just perfect! I wish they were open in the evenings and on weekends because I can't wait to go back!

Ocean State's sandwiches are just very good. The bread is good, it's nicely toasted and the meat is generous. The restaurant is nicely decorated with the local "ocean state" theme. Staff are friendly and there is plenty of seating. This is so much better than what you may find at one of those national chains focused on cutting costs. I wish they had more non sugary drinks to offer.

Man was I surprised to find an absolutely DELICIOUS sandwich shop??? So much space and the staff is incredibly nice. Seems like most people to do to-go orders, but we ate ours there doing some people watching in the windows lol I definitely recommend the Apple Valley Sandwich---YUM!! Love love the green apple slice with the juicy turkey and crunchy bacon!!

For this shop tucked away in Westminster Street. Cute atmosphere, plenty of seating for groups, window seating and dining outside. Menu has variety, prices are reasonable. Very clean and friendly owner and staff. If ever on this side will definitely pop back in for a delicious sandwich.

I have been coming here for years and can't believe I haven't written a review for Ocean State Sandwich yet, it's probably because I always take my order to go and haven't taken any stellar pictures of my food. I have never had a bad sandwich from Ocean State Sandwich and have tried just about every one of them. They are all delicious and well worth the price. We have ordered individual sandwiches to take home and I've ordered catering for work which is very easy because you can do everything online. Additionally, they offer homemade soups and cookies too which are fabulous. The folks who work there are so nice as well as friendly and accommodating. The only downside is the location (no parking) and the hours (they close at 3pm) neither of which are convenient when you live outside of the city and need to drive there.

I visited Ocean State Sandwich Co. as part of the RI Food Fights sandwich showdown, and this restaurant was so regular. We were limited in options as part of this events, so what I ordered was not my first choice. I ordered the Turkey Chutney sandwich and was very underwhelmed. The 2 slices of Turkey that were on this sandwich seemed to be cold cut turkey sliced slightly thicker than normal from the market deli. The menu says "House Roasted Turkey" and I'm sure this turkey was roasted somewhere, but not in this house. The mango chutney on the bun was good, I thought it was tasty, but it was too smooth for my preference. And the curried mayo, while also pretty good, didn't have much "curried" flavor. The most filling part about this sandwich was the bread; a plain ol' bulkie roll, not great. The entire offering was something anyone could make in their own kitchen. I didn't think it had any standout qualities. This sandwich was also listed under their hot sandwiches, and while the bun was warm, the inside was mostly room temp. I will say, however, the storefront was well kept, the worker who took our order was friendly, and it's a quick and easy lunch for the folks working in downtown PVD. Though, An additional side note that was bothersome , is that we did order this meal as dine-in, and still received to-go containers, while other eat-in customers received their meals in basket trays. Based on this experience, there is nothing drawing me back here and it wouldn't be on my list of recommendations.

Loved the sandwich I got here! My first time here and I came for RI Food Fights sandwich month and ordered the Apple Valley Turkey ($11) after seeing how popular it was online. They stuffed it very well with turkey which was fresh and sliced thicker so it wasn't dry. They gave a generous amount of bacon too, compared to many places who skimp on it. The bread they used was on point. Thin slices of whole wheat compliments the sandwich perfectly. A bulky roll would be too much bread. Their sun dried tomato mayo was so good, I've never had this mayo before. And I loved that they spread it on the top and bottom slices of bread! Not many places do this, props to them. It wasn't a huge sandwich, but still great value. The staff was funny and inviting and they have plenty of great sandwiches to choose from. I'll be back for sure.

Ocean State Sandwich is my fourth stop on the 9th Annual #BestSandwichRI showdown. I've been here once before as well. The first time I got a cup of the New England Clam Chowder and the Cuban sandwich which has Applewood Smoked Ham, Thin Sliced Mustard Crusted Pork Loin, Swiss Cheese, Sliced Pickles pressed on a Buono's Bakery Sub Roll. It was yummy so I was very excited to see Ocean State Sandwich as part of the 9th Annual #BestSandwichRI showdown. Ocean State Sandwich is very spacious and has many tables. When you walk in, you'll see a fridge of Yacht club sodas and other beverages and chips on the right and high top tables on the left, the menu on a blackboard is straight ahead. There is also another room with more tables. The RI Food Fights included any option on the menu with a wave next to it. I chose the Apple Valley Turkey sandwich and my husband chose the Ultimate Grinder sandwich. The Apple Valley Turkey sandwich has House Roasted Turkey, Bacon, Sliced Apple, Red Onion, Cheddar, and Sun-Dried Tomato Mayo on Toasted Whole Wheat. It was smaller than the Ultimate Grinder sandwich that had Hot Capicola, Soppressata, Genoa Salami, Sharp Provolone, Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onion, Oil & Vinegar and House Made Sun-Dried Tomato/Banana Pepper Relish on a Buono's Bakery Sub Roll, but it was very good. Both sandwiches are very tasty. Everything in the Apple Valley Turkey sandwich was delicious. There was a good portion of House Roasted Turkey. The crunchiness and different texture of the Bacon, Sliced Apple, Red Onion, Cheddar, House Roasted Turkey and Sun-Dried Tomato Mayo was excellent. The Ultimate Grinder has a little kick to it. We also had a Granny Squibb Iced Tea to go with our sandwiches. Staff are friendly and were very helpful with their recommendations. They bought our order to the table. It wasn't too busy when we arrived around 11:30am, but the line started to form when we left. I can't wait to come back to Ocean State Sandwich. The sandwiches are affordable and worth the price.

    Hot Thanksgiving 365 Sandwich
    Bill S.

Ocean State Sandwich was a pleasant surprise. My hotel had a Panera down the hill, what fun is that? I'd like to have a sandwich prepped by locals and have a good chowder so I walked a little further to OSS. Once I opened the door I was faced with a line?! It moved quickly so not too much of a big deal. I had plans to grab a Snapple Iced Tea but in the cold case, I saw their local tea brand. I finally reach the window and ask for a half sandwich / soup combination. I'd like chowder please. Sir, we only make our chowder on Friday. Bummer. I nix the soup and order their specialty sandwich, the Hot Thanksgiving 365 Sandwich. This truly Thanksgiving, freshly carved Turkey with stuffing and gravy? I wanted to order one for dinner! Very very good. If you're in Providence, find Ocean State Sandwich!

The first time I came, it was a rainy weekday and this time it was a sunny weekend, so I was expecting an even larger crowd; and my prediction was correct. The line was just out the door but because of their awesome staff, the line was moving very quickly. While we waited in line, we could watch them making pastries through the glass, a couple feet in front of us. I admired that level of transparency. When we were third in line, the kindest lady asked us whether we'd be eating in or taking out and she took down our name to help us find a table when it came time. She did the same for the rest of the people in line. She also gave us some recommendations, including the cinnamon bun - apparently they're so good kids cry when they sell out. I didn't intend to order anything with my drink, but I couldn't get the cinnamon bun out of my head so I ordered it along with my iced spiced chai latte. The hen (I think it's their logo) on the aprons of the employees are super cute. We did secure a table. The tables are close together to maximize the number of people who can sit down but I didn't mind. I love their art all around, mostly of birds which I am obsessed with. I love that they have a lot of natural lighting coming through their tall windows. I also like the navy blue and white theme they have going on. The chai latte was perfect. It was the right color (a dark tan), meaning the ratio of tea and milk was good and I could taste a lot of the spices. The cinnamon bun blew my expectations away. The second my teeth made. contact with the icing, it was a magical feeling. I couldn't quite put my finger on what it tasted like, but the closest I got was dulce de leche. It is truly unlike any other cinnamon bun I have ever had. The dough is soft and there is a good amount of cinnamon. It's also $4 which is not bad. I had a bite of their canelé, which apparently requires a lot of work to make. It was very moist, with a great caramelized finish. I am super excited to try their new weekend dinner menu, but also more of their all day menu items.

It was beautifully served and tasted even better than it looked. Would definitely order this again. We split the Halloumi fries as an appetizer. The fries were very similar to mozzarella sticks, except with Halloumi, and they were incredible, especially with the hot honey. For entrees, we got the Bucatini and the Chicken & Waffles, and they were both delicious. In fact, I think the chicken and waffles may have been the best I've ever had. I especially loved the thin and crispy chicken cutlet, and the chipotle honey butter was so good! Unfortunately, we were too full for dessert, but the dessert options looked amazing as well. Service was great throughout our entire visit. Our water glasses were refilled promptly and were checked on just the right number of times. Portion sizes were very good, and pricing is spot on. The good: This seems like a nice spot for large diverse groups since there's many options in a small area, plenty of seating for larger parties and giant TVs on the walls. Most of the food is decent and they've curated an eclectic mix of cuisines. The bad: This food hall is designed to extract the most money from you in the shortest amount of time. In total, we paid $105 (including parking) for 2 orders of bao buns, a rice crispie treat, a kids cheeseburger and fries, 1 order of samosas and 2 drinks. We basically had apps and a drink for over $100. $22 for a cosmo and a coke. $12 for an IPA. You must have to ask for a receipt because you don't get one at any of the pads they ring you out on. Normally I don't care but once my group got back together and I realized what we were being charged, I realized I should have been asking for receipts. They have staff that come around and bus the tables. We had to tell them "no we're not done" 3 times in a 20 min span and they still insisted on taking our trays with our napkins etc while we were finishing our drinks and fries; thereby leaving just the basket they were in. It was really odd. It felt like fighting the seagulls on Scarborough beach. While I appreciate the effort, I don't want to ever feel rushed when dining and when I do, especially at a food hall, I most likely will not return. Maybe they knew what the parking costs and were trying to help us save money? They should just wait til you get up or at least look like you're done before coming over. The ugly: $17.12 to park for 1.5 hours. They must charge by the second. I only paid $22 for 10 hours at an event at Fenway last weekend. I later discovered that if you want the validated rate you have to specifically ask for a QR code when you order food. Really????? While it's my own fault for being in a hurry and not looking this up beforehand, hiding parking validation from customers is wild! I thought it was weird when I went to the giant kiosk that says "did you validate" it still charged me full price but just figured that maybe they charge more during peak times. IMHO, when you order they should ask you if you've validated your parking yet or offer you a code. I might have given 3 stars, but once I found out that I overpaid for parking due to this trickery, I had to deduct one star.
