    Apple Valley Turkey

I stopped here to grab a sandwich during lunch. The place was packed and I had thought I should have ordered online. However the line moved pretty quickly and the food came out faster than I thought it would. The sandwich was delicious. I will definitely be back for lunch.

Visited today with one of my RI Food Fights sandwich coupons and was lucky to snag a parking spot right in front of the shop. Was greeted very warmly and had a choice of several sandwiches that could be ordered with my coupon. I decided on the Ultimate Grinder, and it did not disappoint. Made on a fresh Buono's Bakery sub roll, the meats and cheeses complemented each other perfectly. The real standout however, was the house made sun dried tomato/banana pepper relish which added great flavor with just enough spice to the sandwich. I should add that the service was very fast as well. I paid for my order and was about to sit down to wait, but the order was already ready! I also got a pistachio & white chocolate chip cookie which was soft and a little gooey - just perfect! I wish they were open in the evenings and on weekends because I can't wait to go back!

Man was I surprised to find an absolutely DELICIOUS sandwich shop??? So much space and the staff is incredibly nice. Seems like most people to do to-go orders, but we ate ours there doing some people watching in the windows lol I definitely recommend the Apple Valley Sandwich---YUM!! Love love the green apple slice with the juicy turkey and crunchy bacon!!

Ocean State's sandwiches are just very good. The bread is good, it's nicely toasted and the meat is generous. The restaurant is nicely decorated with the local "ocean state" theme. Staff are friendly and there is plenty of seating. This is so much better than what you may find at one of those national chains focused on cutting costs. I wish they had more non sugary drinks to offer.

For this shop tucked away in Westminster Street. Cute atmosphere, plenty of seating for groups, window seating and dining outside. Menu has variety, prices are reasonable. Very clean and friendly owner and staff. If ever on this side will definitely pop back in for a delicious sandwich.

I have been coming here for years and can't believe I haven't written a review for Ocean State Sandwich yet, it's probably because I always take my order to go and haven't taken any stellar pictures of my food. I have never had a bad sandwich from Ocean State Sandwich and have tried just about every one of them. They are all delicious and well worth the price. We have ordered individual sandwiches to take home and I've ordered catering for work which is very easy because you can do everything online. Additionally, they offer homemade soups and cookies too which are fabulous. The folks who work there are so nice as well as friendly and accommodating. The only downside is the location (no parking) and the hours (they close at 3pm) neither of which are convenient when you live outside of the city and need to drive there.

I visited Ocean State Sandwich Co. as part of the RI Food Fights sandwich showdown, and this restaurant was so regular. We were limited in options as part of this events, so what I ordered was not my first choice. I ordered the Turkey Chutney sandwich and was very underwhelmed. The 2 slices of Turkey that were on this sandwich seemed to be cold cut turkey sliced slightly thicker than normal from the market deli. The menu says "House Roasted Turkey" and I'm sure this turkey was roasted somewhere, but not in this house. The mango chutney on the bun was good, I thought it was tasty, but it was too smooth for my preference. And the curried mayo, while also pretty good, didn't have much "curried" flavor. The most filling part about this sandwich was the bread; a plain ol' bulkie roll, not great. The entire offering was something anyone could make in their own kitchen. I didn't think it had any standout qualities. This sandwich was also listed under their hot sandwiches, and while the bun was warm, the inside was mostly room temp. I will say, however, the storefront was well kept, the worker who took our order was friendly, and it's a quick and easy lunch for the folks working in downtown PVD. Though, An additional side note that was bothersome , is that we did order this meal as dine-in, and still received to-go containers, while other eat-in customers received their meals in basket trays. Based on this experience, there is nothing drawing me back here and it wouldn't be on my list of recommendations.

Loved the sandwich I got here! My first time here and I came for RI Food Fights sandwich month and ordered the Apple Valley Turkey ($11) after seeing how popular it was online. They stuffed it very well with turkey which was fresh and sliced thicker so it wasn't dry. They gave a generous amount of bacon too, compared to many places who skimp on it. The bread they used was on point. Thin slices of whole wheat compliments the sandwich perfectly. A bulky roll would be too much bread. Their sun dried tomato mayo was so good, I've never had this mayo before. And I loved that they spread it on the top and bottom slices of bread! Not many places do this, props to them. It wasn't a huge sandwich, but still great value. The staff was funny and inviting and they have plenty of great sandwiches to choose from. I'll be back for sure.

Ocean State Sandwich is my fourth stop on the 9th Annual #BestSandwichRI showdown. I've been here once before as well. The first time I got a cup of the New England Clam Chowder and the Cuban sandwich which has Applewood Smoked Ham, Thin Sliced Mustard Crusted Pork Loin, Swiss Cheese, Sliced Pickles pressed on a Buono's Bakery Sub Roll. It was yummy so I was very excited to see Ocean State Sandwich as part of the 9th Annual #BestSandwichRI showdown. Ocean State Sandwich is very spacious and has many tables. When you walk in, you'll see a fridge of Yacht club sodas and other beverages and chips on the right and high top tables on the left, the menu on a blackboard is straight ahead. There is also another room with more tables. The RI Food Fights included any option on the menu with a wave next to it. I chose the Apple Valley Turkey sandwich and my husband chose the Ultimate Grinder sandwich. The Apple Valley Turkey sandwich has House Roasted Turkey, Bacon, Sliced Apple, Red Onion, Cheddar, and Sun-Dried Tomato Mayo on Toasted Whole Wheat. It was smaller than the Ultimate Grinder sandwich that had Hot Capicola, Soppressata, Genoa Salami, Sharp Provolone, Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onion, Oil & Vinegar and House Made Sun-Dried Tomato/Banana Pepper Relish on a Buono's Bakery Sub Roll, but it was very good. Both sandwiches are very tasty. Everything in the Apple Valley Turkey sandwich was delicious. There was a good portion of House Roasted Turkey. The crunchiness and different texture of the Bacon, Sliced Apple, Red Onion, Cheddar, House Roasted Turkey and Sun-Dried Tomato Mayo was excellent. The Ultimate Grinder has a little kick to it. We also had a Granny Squibb Iced Tea to go with our sandwiches. Staff are friendly and were very helpful with their recommendations. They bought our order to the table. It wasn't too busy when we arrived around 11:30am, but the line started to form when we left. I can't wait to come back to Ocean State Sandwich. The sandwiches are affordable and worth the price.

    Hot Thanksgiving 365 Sandwich
    Bill S.

Ocean State Sandwich was a pleasant surprise. My hotel had a Panera down the hill, what fun is that? I'd like to have a sandwich prepped by locals and have a good chowder so I walked a little further to OSS. Once I opened the door I was faced with a line?! It moved quickly so not too much of a big deal. I had plans to grab a Snapple Iced Tea but in the cold case, I saw their local tea brand. I finally reach the window and ask for a half sandwich / soup combination. I'd like chowder please. Sir, we only make our chowder on Friday. Bummer. I nix the soup and order their specialty sandwich, the Hot Thanksgiving 365 Sandwich. This truly Thanksgiving, freshly carved Turkey with stuffing and gravy? I wanted to order one for dinner! Very very good. If you're in Providence, find Ocean State Sandwich!

The dining-in available late Feb. 2021

This little shop is one of the few that was still offering dining-in during the state of RI business limitations due to Covid. They were doing a brisk business of take out during our visit. We were out 'running errands' and it was frigid outdoors, so we chose to sit in the furthest corner of the dining area and eat indoors where the temperature was much more manageable. My SO got himself a twelve ninety nine lunch 'special' which includes any sandwich, any bottled drink, and a cookie! Huge cookie, and they had several varieties to choose from. I opted for a Thanksgiving 365 and a hot tea as an iced tea on this freezing cold day did not sound at all enticing. The 'Grinder' my SO chose is loaded with meats, cheese, peppers. He thoroughly enjoyed it and scarfed it down along with his cream soda, which is something you don't often find in the cooler of a sandwich shop. My Thanksgiving 365 was just as it should be. The herb stuffing is heavy on sage and includes bits of celery, there was plenty of cranberry sauce (which I love on my turkey sandwiches!) and there was plenty of meat in there on a nice soft roll. For me this sandwich was so big, I brought half of it home. My hot tea was in a large paper cup and I was able to add milk and sugar if I so desired at a little station near the cooler. It looks like on busy mornings this station has much more to offer than just milk and sugar. The cookie was placed in a small paper bag, the type of cookie written on it, then stapled and also came home with us, so I was very glad it was in a stapled bag! It was sweet and satisfying with bits of chewy cranberry. Most take out orders were 'called in' or placed for pick up through their website ahead of time and ready to go before the party arrived for pick up. You can also get 3rd party delivery through the website ordering system. The soups of the day were Chili, N.E. Clam Chowder and Carrot Ginger. A nice variety to please different pallets. The seating open to guests included counters along the window and a few tables in another area to the right of the door. The remaining tables in that area were 'cordoned off' in a group to allow more room for socially distanced dining. The tables near the counter were being used to 'hold' pick up orders. A few folks came in to order take out, and they spaced themselves out in the area leading from the door to the cashier to wait for their order to be complete. All staff were wearing masks, as were all the customers and hand sanitizer is available for customer use.

RI food fights brought me in and you don't get access to the whole sandwich menu here, unfortunately you have to pick between their "Mushroom Bahn MI" and their "Screaming BLT". I went with the BLT since I wasn't feeling the vegan option. The description was "chili-hoisin glazed bacon | sliced tomato baby greens tomato jam | dill pickle pickled red onion chipotle aioli toasty thick-sliced white bread". Honestly, it was underwhelming. It had some tasty components but it was pretty average. The bacon was terribly weak. It was probably frozen precooked bacon that is heated and brushed with a hoisen glaze. I was hoping for some thick cut glazed almost candied bacon. Their avg. sandwich was around $16-17. If paying for that, I'd be left pretty disappointed. On top of that, it probably took around 35-40 minutes to get the sandwich. Again, pretty okay sandwich, the pickled onion, tomato jam and Chipotle aioli elevated things, but it's in vain with the bacon they use. Their other sandwiches sound good, so it's possible I'll visit to try them out at some point but can't see myself running back here after my impression with this BLT.

The space itself is interesting -- I understand the location has even been used as a filming location for a movie -- and the coffee and food we had were both quite good. What stood out, unfortunately, was the atmosphere created by the staff. During my visit the café was less than half full, but employees were very actively directing where people could and could not sit in what otherwise appeared to be open seating. At one point I watched a staff member speak sharply to a customer while waving a sign that said "No laptops at the bar." The confusing part was that the customer didn't appear to have a laptop at all. The interaction felt unnecessarily confrontational and awkward to witness. Taken together, the tone of the staff came across as petty and uninviting, which really undermined what could otherwise be a pleasant place to stop for coffee. It was very easy to use the Toast website to select the items and pickup date and time. On Saturday, August 23, 2025, I parked across the street from Sawyer's and headed in. My tote had a Roast Beef, Horseradish, Blue Cheese on Baguette and Avocado, Arugula, Cucumber, Sundried Tomato, Pickled Onion on Multi Grain, Iced Black Tea, Chocolate Chip Cookies, chips, house pasta salad, and apples. The other tote had Turkey, Bacon, Sundried Tomato on County White and Mortadella, Mozzarella, Artichoke Pesto on Focaccia, watermelon lemonade, Chocolate Chip Cookies, chips, house pasta salad, and apples. Both totes had utensils and plastic cups with lids. We all absolutely enjoyed everything in the tote and couldn't finish everything at the beach. The first time I came, it was a rainy weekday and this time it was a sunny weekend, so I was expecting an even larger crowd; and my prediction was correct. The line was just out the door but because of their awesome staff, the line was moving very quickly. While we waited in line, we could watch them making pastries through the glass, a couple feet in front of us. I admired that level of transparency. When we were third in line, the kindest lady asked us whether we'd be eating in or taking out and she took down our name to help us find a table when it came time. She did the same for the rest of the people in line. She also gave us some recommendations, including the cinnamon bun - apparently they're so good kids cry when they sell out. I didn't intend to order anything with my drink, but I couldn't get the cinnamon bun out of my head so I ordered it along with my iced spiced chai latte. The hen (I think it's their logo) on the aprons of the employees are super cute. We did secure a table. The tables are close together to maximize the number of people who can sit down but I didn't mind. I love their art all around, mostly of birds which I am obsessed with. I love that they have a lot of natural lighting coming through their tall windows. I also like the navy blue and white theme they have going on. The chai latte was perfect. It was the right color (a dark tan), meaning the ratio of tea and milk was good and I could taste a lot of the spices. The cinnamon bun blew my expectations away. The second my teeth made. contact with the icing, it was a magical feeling. I couldn't quite put my finger on what it tasted like, but the closest I got was dulce de leche. It is truly unlike any other cinnamon bun I have ever had. The dough is soft and there is a good amount of cinnamon. It's also $4 which is not bad. I had a bite of their canelé, which apparently requires a lot of work to make. It was very moist, with a great caramelized finish. I am super excited to try their new weekend dinner menu, but also more of their all day menu items.

Ellie's is dangerous. I walked in thinking coffee and one pastry. That lasted about 30 seconds…read more The owner (adorable, by the way) was walking around checking on tables and making sure everyone was happy. It feels like her place in the best way -- warm, proud, hands-on. Pastries are legit. Super buttery, flaky enough to make a mess, clearly baked that morning. No sad, sitting-around-all-day vibes. Ordered the breakfast sandwich and that tomato jam needs to be illegal. Sweet, savory, slightly tangy -- it completely makes the sandwich. I kept trying to figure out how to recreate it at home. Not happening. Crispy chicken sandwich was properly seasoned and not dried out (why is that so hard for some places?). Fries were solid too -- crispy, not limp. And the kale salad with roasted chickpeas and chicken made me feel like I had my life together. Fresh, simple, and actually satisfying. It's one of those places you stumble into while traveling and then immediately start googling whether you can justify going back the next day.
