Working in Downtown, sometimes it can feel like there are almost *too* many options, but when I'm looking for a quick, delicious sandwich, the Jolly Roger is my go to! Whether ordering something off of the menu, or building your own, I would *highly* recommend opting for the baguette. Went in for the first time since 2019 and shocked to find they no longer make sandwiches. Only serving rice bowls. This would have been OK for the price but the toppings were all cold! Sandwiches and other offerings, higher prices for not that much food. Staff is nice but can be a little off-putting. Interior is cramped and disorganized, but they make the sandwiches in front of you which is nice. I ordered the Point Taken (roast beef) which was more of less bland were it not for the sauce they smeared on it. The bread was very, very average- I would say that it actually made the sandwich worse. It does have a nice location however, and if you enjoy eating by the water it might be worth it for you to stop in here. Clearly I don't come here often and I haven't tried many sandwiches, but judging by my experience and the other food I saw being eaten around me I'd call this just another average sandwich shop. read more

When we found that the deli we wanted to eat at was closed, my coworker and I decided to wander the streets to find something quick to eat. The first shop we found was Jolly Roger Cafe, which was a sandwich and coffee shop. It's a cute little shop with friendly service. They had plenty of vegetarian options for my friend, and he opted for a hummus wrap. It seems that their most popular sandwich was their meatball sandwich, but I ended up ordering a salami and brie sandwich. Small, local, quaint, with options such as hummus and brie in their sandwiches? I must say that we lucked out and found a delicious little lunch spot! The service was horrible. Jolly Roger I think not. The guy making the sandwiches had a very condescending manner when taking orders. This guy must have taken notes from the Soup Natzi on how to serve people. Maybe if the sandwiches tasted good he would be able to speak to his customers in the manner that he does. I should have continued walking down the street and gotten a sandwich that actually had some substance in it. The bread was stale and hard. The meat was oily. If I didn't ask for my sides, they would have let me walk out without giving them to me. Save your money and go someplace else. read more

My boyfriend and I have eaten in Providence MANY times, however finding a good unique lunch place always seems to be difficult. We wanted different, somewhere that had that EXTRA something, along with great service. Jolly Roger Cafe is that place. My boyfriend chose the banana, pb, bacon, and honey sandwich on white bread, and could NOT stop raving about it. I went a safer route, and ordered turkey, lettuce, tomato, and guacamole on whole grain and it was one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. All of the ingredients were fresh and the bread was extremely hearty (I can be picky when it comes to bread!). Plus we got a bag of chips or a fruit with the meal. This is my new go-to cafe for lunch - although I do live a block away, I would certainly get in the car to go elsewhere if I wasn't totally satisfied each time I come to Jolly Roger. They have very creative and made-to-order sandwiches (I love the Jolly Roger with the Cranberry/Mayo mix!) and delicious cold salads, like potato, pasta, quinoa, thai noodle! A great selection of 5 or 6 bread options. Always have great specials and they are connected to the RISD dining system so the prices are great! $6.50 for a hearty sandwich with chips or salad. If you want something quick, they have a grab-and-go cooler with slider versions of their sandwiches, pretzel/hummus, salads, etc. This is also a great place to come with your laptop and do some work. They have one of those "bars" that face the windows...I always like those. The only wierd thing about this place is that they are only open for breakfast/coffee certain times of the year, and it seems to be when school is NOT in. I would really love it if they opened before 11a year-round! read more

I am baffled by the low reviews. I started going here recently after starting work in the area. They do rock solid sandwiches. The toppings are fresh and there is a good variety. The bread is good. They have a rotating set of specials and several regulars (the Mortise & Tenon is my favorite). Sandwiches come with a little salad, a piece of fruit, a yogurt, or a bag of chips. The service is good. The staff is always friendly. A couple of the ladies that are often behind the counter are kind of cut ups and will joke around with the customers. "What sandwich can I get for you Mr. Man." But, they are always fast even when they get slammed with a knot of people all at once. The only downsides are that their coffee is pretty average and they don't have a public restroom. I also love that they have RC Cola in the pop machine, makes me nostalgic. read more

I held off coming here for a long time because of the subpar yelp reviews--but goodness this place is NOT subpar... this place is a hole in one! Or perhaps... the metaphor would make more sense if it were actually a hole in the wall. This is definitely more a cute cafe bistro. On a really nice part of South Main. Near RISD. Anyway. This is such a super cute sandwich cafe!! They have fabulous bread options, including an amazing fresh and crispy baguette (!), fresh veggies, delish meats, and GREAT extras, including guac and hummus. The sandwiches are made to perfect proportion and great NEATLY--not sloppily like at other sandwich cafes. I don't see what the problem is. This is a GREAT homemade sandwich shop with skilled baristas and a really down to earth feel. I will totally be visiting this place more frequently to get my sandwich on! I really wanted to like Jolly Roger Cafe, I did. It's on my walk to school every day, and I love their look -- the pirate decal, the sandwich-on-a-sword hanging sign outside... Unfortunately, that sign is just about the best thing about the place. Granted, I've only tried the one sandwich, but I won't be going there again. I ordered a build-your-own ($6.75) with egg salad on baguette with "greens of the day", cucumber, dried cranberries, and curried mango chutney. First of all, the "greens" were iceberg lettuce. SO not the same. The dressing was tangy, but lacking the complexity and depth I really hope for in a chutney. The egg salad had no flavor whatsoever. Actually it did: mayonnaise and egg. But it didn't taste seasoned. C'mon people. Salt and pepper. Further, it was just kind of perched on top of the other sandwich fix'ns, not really in the sandwich. When you sign up for egg salad, you know it's going to be a little bit tricky to eat, but It's reasonable to expect that the maker helps you out by building the sandwich properly. Pros: the sandwiches are big enough to split between two people, if neither are that hungry. Free choice of side, which is fresh fruit, bag of chips, mini-salad, or mini-yogurt. Final verdict: enjoy the sign, but keep on walking. Don't waste your money or your stomach real estate. read more

I too, am baffled by the poor reviews for the Jolly Roger. I have had nothing but delicious meals and excellent service every time I go in there. I particularly love the "jolly roger" sandwich as well as the chicken salad (with the cranberry chutney). The people who make the sandwiches are very pleasant as well as the cashier. I love that they have RC cola as the soda! It is very comfortable (although a little small) inside. It has a kind of hipster jive to it, I mean it is owned by RISD! Solid delicious sandwich shop that I ate at while visiting RISD. I got a sandwich special that had horseradish sauce on it. It was great!! Also they have ciabatta bread here and my friend says that all sandwich shops that offer ciabatta breads are legit. Nothing to complain about here! read more

First of all, I go to RISD so I have been to Jolly Roger many times- If you are going to go, you should go during lunch hours when the person who makes the sandwitches is one who is super speedy and is good at making them (I'll find out what his name is) because the taste fluctuates quite a bit depending upon who makes the food. read more

People there are so nice. Many have told me that it's too expensive but I think it is better than Geoffs. I also like that they have salads and I frequently just get salad or soup for lunch. It's also close to the water and as the inside is sort of dreary I recommend eating outside if you have time. read more

The Jolly Roger gets five stars for being exactly what it set out to be: a good little sandwich shop that caters to the neighborhood and RISD students. I have a friend who prefers more traditional sandwiches so this is where we go when she comes to my neighborhood. I have to add, though, that even though you can get a very traditional turkey sandwich or BLT, there's also a selection for those who seek more variety. My husband and I like the Jolly Roger with its cranberry mayo. I also swing by here to get their quinoa salad as a side for when we're grilling burgers. The staff is friendly (and loud) and even when there's a line, it moves fast. I also like it that they keep a pitcher of iced cucumber water and cups available for customers. Nice touch. Now if I could just stop calling it the Jolly Rancher my friend might stop laughing at me. read more

All around a great mash up of flavors for a deli sandwich, not to mention the service was pretty awesome as well. Those ladies behind the counter know what they're doing! Fantastic sandwich place - especially for those gluten free as they serve GF bread for the sandwiches. In addition, today I was treated to a free sample of the the GF cookies they are now going to be selling. Very thoughtful. Staff is super friendly. Price for lunch is really reasonable considering what you are getting for about $8 with tax (sandwich, chips and pickle). I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is the S. Stopped by the Jolly Roger Cafe to pick up sandwiches for lunch. All the specials are listed on a board above the service counter. I tried the the Point Taken which had very good flavor packed on a delicious ciabatta roll. It came with a choice of fruit, chips, yogurt, or salad. My friends also enjoyed their sandwiches. They have some interesting PB&J options that I'd be interested in trying in the future. Overall, a good selection of interesting choices that are well worth the price! read more

Sandwiches here are okay although the coffee isn't good. However, this afternoon I have before me one of the worst vegetarian chilis I have ever tasted. It is very spicy but without any flavor, and the beans are not thoroughly cooked. Won't be hurrying back. read more
