My dad loved this place and so do we...and a whole lot of others, here in Matthews, NC. Old fashioned regular grub, specials every day, never standing still wait staff and a kitchen that is always hustling. Open three meals a day, good portions and I sure do like the servers, variety of grub and reasonable prices. Parking in their lot in front. Lasagna is one of my favorite, along with those breakfast omelettes. They make their own ranch dressing and that on your salad or french fries is a super good tasty meal. This is an old school gem of a diner. Simple and inexpensive traditional fare done quickly, with friendly and attentive service. I sat at the counter and chatted with the wait staff between their tasks. The coffee was easy to drink (though don't expect to find any nut milks here). There was none of the edgy impatience of Starbucks or stuffy aloofness you might encounter at many bougie breakfast boutiques around town. Highly recommend. read more

I went with the Turkey and Dressing with Gravy with homemade mac & cheese and limas. Turkey was not sliced as I expected, instead it was very tender pulled white and dark meat with a savory gravy. Delicious! Limas were piping hot and mac & cheese was homemade although a bit dry. My wife's dish, the Grilled Chicken with Onions & Peppers, gave me food envy though. Served hot and sizzling off the grill, over rice, it was superb. Her sides, fresh mashed potatoes and green beans were also very good. Will I return? You're darn right I will! Me and my parents go to this restaurant regularly almost every Sunday and it is perfect every time. The waitresses are very kind and attentive, and the food is always fresh. We found this restaurant several years ago and each time we have been here, we're always pleased with the food and friendly service. The staff is very flexible on seating and if one staffemeber is busy, others step in the help. On my last visit, I chose the grilled chicken tips plate with two sides. The chicken has a good flavor and mixed with rice and onions is great. I chose collard greens and squash as my sides. I thought the squash would be sautéed since the menu didn't indicate that it was fried. Unfortunately, the squash was fried. They could improve the menu on that confusion. However, the food is made very well and the value is hard to beat anywhere. I highly recommend coming and it's also great to see this restaurant following all CDC pandemic guidelines. All the staff is friendly and the service is great. Can't beat their breakfast specials. My disappointment, and reason for 3 stars, is the chicken tips over rice. One of my favorites in the past but not anymore. I have been ordering this for years and it is quite tasty and the chicken tips were good. But the last 3-4 times I ordered it each of the the little chicken chunks have inedible parts in them. Really annoying to have to pull this crap out of your mouth because you can't even chew through it. Something has changed with the quality of chicken they use I guess. We've been going to East 74 for many years. Never has the owner ever acknowledged us. My in-laws have owned two restaurants and a hotel. You always acknowledge your regulars. Last night we brought our granddaughter who's visiting from another state to East 74. The waitress, named Maria, was hostile and angry. We've had her before and the same was true. My husband asked to talk to the owner because she made our dinner miserable. The owner didn't even respect us enough to come out. We will never go back there. Great little home cooking style spot, breakfast all day, good prices. I had a a Philly Cheesesteak, the rest of my party had some of the Sunday specials, turkey with dressing, country style steak over rice. Sides included fries, mashed potatoes and gravy, mac n' cheese, and fried squash. Everyone cleaned their plates, so I doubt I could give much of a higher recommendation. Even when the owner told her to seat us at an open booth in the corner, she didn't.
