We ordered Earls through Postmates recently and had a very slow experience. I had never been to this restaurant in person, but have walked by plenty of times while at Assembly, and it seemed nice. We ordered a burger, sushi roll, and slice of cheesecake for dinner on a weeknight and it took almost two hours to get! Our Postmates delivery person was in touch with us as he placed the order and waited over an hour outside to get the food. As the inside of the restaurant wasn't even open due to covid, it makes no sense why a burger and sushi should take that long! When we finally got our order, the burger wasn't warm or cooked medium. The sushi and cheesecake was good, but definitely not worth the super long wait. Our delivery guy had asked for a manager at one point and all we got was a lousy 20% off coupon. We won't be back. read more

Yeah, there's a reason why this place only has a 3-star rating out of 800+ reviews... it definitely lives up to its reputation. It would take a lot for me to return here for anything other than a beer or glass of wine (depending on if they have decent pours), but judging by how stingy they are with the food, I'm guessing it's only going to be a beer. We came here for lunch and it left a lot to be desired. The food was bland, and agreeing with previous reviewers, the service was very slow. It took forever to put our order in, and forever to get refills of sodas and water. We ordered the garlic fries to share, which were ok, but they came with about a heaping teaspoon of the aioli dipping sauce. For an entire order. Split between two people. I asked if we could have more, and they brought out another heaping teaspoon. How kind. That seemed to be the theme of the whole experience, stingy. Everything is small and there is no soul in their food, it's all under-seasoned. Even their soda glasses are small! My friend got the Eggs Benedict and the whites of her eggs were barely cooked, they were all gloopy and nasty. I ordered the Salmon Zen Bowl, and while the salmon was nicely cooked, the rest of it was incredibly one-note. They also only provided about a heaping tablespoon of sauce on this dish as well, I sense a trend! To sum up, Earls is basically the low-talker of Assembly Row. An expensive low-talker at that, and there are way better restaurants to be had at Assembly than this place. They get two stars for: 1. The atmosphere, it does have a nice vibe and decor, and 2. The nicely-cooked fish. Other than that, pass! read more

Great spot for work lunches at assembly row, super busy but you can walk into the bar high tops. Yummy but would not advise getting it for work meetings because The quinoa gets stuck in your teeth lol. Dinner drinks are good too. read more

I've been to Earl's a few times and wasn't too impressed by the food and drinks, but I went again last night and the food knocked my socks off. I ordered off the happy hour menu around 5:30pm on a Wednesday (happy hour ended at 6pm), and everything was delicious. I didn't order a drink but my friend asked for a hot toddy and the bartender made one even though it wasn't on the menu. The lobster mac and cheese was perfectly cheesy and warmed up my insides. The tacos were the highlight for me though, and I would go back just to get another taste. They were fresh, soft, and had the perfect kick. My friend ordered the steak, which wasn't too impressive, but the tuna poke appetizer was amazing. I would definitely go back for the apps! read more

Oh my, I love this place. I've been coming here for years and clearly I'm not tired of this place yet. I've came for date nights, work parties, lunch date with girlfriends, double dates, you name it. I love how casual and open this place is. This place has all great vibes. Its a sit down place/lounge/bar all on one floor with big opened windows on a nice sunny day with available seating outside. The front end staff's friendliness fluctuates to be honest, but it gets the job done. Front ends customer service could be better. The servers, it's always a hit or miss. Some are nice but takes forever or some are rude but are super speedy with bringing your food and drinks out, but overall I really do enjoy this place. The food and drinks always turns out great. Everything works out at the end of the day/night. My go to appetizer is the spinach dip! Nice warm bread or lightly salted chips with a creamy spinach dip is bomb! Oh and their truffle fries? One word--delicious! I love getting their dynamite sushi. I've had much better authentic sushi, but coming from an American restaurant their dynamite roll is amazing with some spicy mayo drizzled on the top and on the side. I really hope they do not take this off the menu like they took the lobster mac and cheese off!! Also, their chicken street tacos aren't bad either. I wish they were a bit bigger but it is super filling after eating three. I recently visited during COVID and they came out with their new menus so a much of new dishes. I really wanted to try to lobster + shrimp ravioli but unfortunately missed out on it since they were out, but I'm sure I'll be back soon. I ended up getting the hot crispy chicken sandwich which wasn't all that special to me. I wasn't a fan of it... My boyfriend normally gets the Korean beef bibimbap and he swears by it. This time he got the ahi tuna poke bowl and said it was OK. The tuna was good but such a small portion. Mangos were really sour and hard and yet again, very small portions and did not fill him up. Two people in my party got the roasted chicken + truffle mashed potatoes and both said it was really good! Be on the look out for their monthly drink specials! Some times they have $5 mules, mojitos, margaritas, champagne, they will surprise you. Be sure to look it up before you go or ask the server what their monthly special is. No worries if it's not something you enjoy because they also have margarita and mojito pitchers available. (it's not on the menu but I ask my server every time and they always have to check on it for me and end up ordering it) They have so many syrups at the bar they can pretty much make any flavor you want... I wouldn't recommend the passion fruit margarita though :/ FYI-- I love the fact that they have vegan things on the menu too! That way they have a little something for everyone in the party! Also, there is a ton of free parking all over Assembly so you can really take your time and relax at this place rather than at the Pru. You'll have to worry about your 2 hour time slot. Lastly, they just added pay here stickers on the tables, so you can scan the code on the table and pay your bill instead of waiting for your waiter to come over. read more

My wife and I have been to Earl's a couple of times and had a decent experience (thus the second star) but they do not make up for the few times we've been and had terrible experiences. The first that springs to mind is the time my wife and I went after work (close to midnight) and we asked if they were serving food. The bartender said the kitchen was closing but if we could choose quickly then we could order. Great! We choose quickly but the bartender proceeds to ignore us and clean the bar. We left sans food or drink. Today, we decided to take advantage of their online offer for a 20% discount on takeout orders and give them another shot. A couple of burgers can't be too difficult right? Wrong. I order the bacon cheeseburger without Mayo or mustard cooked medium rare. The picture included on this review clearly shows Mayo, mustard, (on both top and bottom bun) and a gray slab of the cheapest frozen beef they could find. They did manage to add sautéed mushrooms which surprised me. My wife's California chicken burger was fine except the avocado was a dark color (not ripe). Both of our buns were near-charred on the inside. There was no ketchup included with my fries and no dressing for my wife's salad (weird that they have such issues with condiments). The dragon roll we ordered was fine. This was all preceded by their website not working when we tried to order and only after 15 minutes of trying and failing to get Apple Pay to work (so convenient) that we figured out how to put in our credit card manually. All in all, I won't be returning to Earl's. Edit: Mikaela reached out to apologize for the mistakes and offer a refund. We appreciate the gesture and wanted to make it known that there was an attempt to make things right. Thank you Mikaela! We had a very frustrating experience at this restaurant for dinner last night. My husband and I had been here before and found it fine (a little bland, but serviceable), so being at Assembly we decided to get a quick dinner. While our wait staff was attentive at first, after we ordered, we did not see them again until the meal arrived. There was a problem with the food, which was not their fault (I am someone who has a negative taste reaction to cilantro) and the person who brought out the food (not our server) kindly offered to fix it. Our server stopped by and said that would check on it. About 15 minutes later, after my husband finished his meal, my salad came back. The server said they would check that everything was fine, but never did. Unfortunately, I found and ingested several pieces of cilantro, which made it a very unappealing meal. After another 10 or so minutes I flagged the server down who said, oh, they tried to remove the cilantro, but it is already mixed in with the arugula. I guess I should have told you that. I asked for the bill and then the server disappeared. I had to go to the bar to pay the bill. My husband's meal, a burger, was okay, but he was upset with how we were ignored. A very disappointing experience. read more

Negative Stars!!!!! Brought my underage brother and his friends for some late night eats. Any day at Earl's in Assembly is a great day. I always have a great time here, whether I go alone or with friends. If you see that there are no tables available, go to the bar. Ricky, AJ, Swan & Jovan are wonderful. I can't remember everyone's names, but all the bar staff are very friendly and fun. Whether you go midday, on a Monday night or weekend, it's always good vibes. The tuna tacos are my fav and they have great Happy Hour deals. Don't think, just go! read more

Food is delicious. Wait staff works very hard. It would have been a five star experience except for the billing system. In this day and age a restaurant of this size should be able to split the tab effectively and allow patrons to pay their portion of a large bill. Having to fight over a bill for twelve people really detracted from our experience. read more

My $23.00 glass of Sauv Blanc (I asked if they had made a mistake) cost more than my Southwest salad with chicken (at the bar) which was fine but nothing special. Salad came out with no dressing or pico de gallo on the side (requested), server with just ok service--no proactive offers of salt, pepper, or refilling my water. I had to ask and then wait. So service was just OK. Not busy at all. For these prices & service I would def. go elsewhere. read more

I've heard a lot of good things about Earls so I decided to come Sunday. My first disappointment was the wait time which was 15 min that quickly turned to 25-30 min. I went here for a friend of a friends gathering. We sat in these huge booths that were super comfortable. Immediately our server greeted us and took our drinks orders. A Great place to have a get together. This place has great vibes on a weekend night. Although, it can get moderately noisey. The food was delicious. I got the lobster and Salmon. Everything was cooked perfectly and the Flavor was great. Although, I was not a fan of their liquored beverages. I tried the sangria they were offering and was not impressed. Earls has been consistent with there service and food. I'd highly recommend it. read more

Shortly after posting my previous review, I was contacted by a manager at Earls (Abigail to be specific) inviting us back in for a full meal to give them another try. After settling on a date, with Abigail accommodating our hectic schedule, we went to Earls for a Sunday night dinner. Unsurprisingly (given the circumstances of our visit), we received outstanding, friendly service throughout. As to the food - the menu is very diverse, ranging from sushi to healthy bowls to steaks. We ended up going with the Quinoa and Avocado Powerbowl and the Cajun Blackened Chicken. The food was above average, but not extraordinary. My chicken was perfectly cooked and juicy, but the Cajun spice was a bit overpowering (although the cole slaw and potato salad that came on the side were fantastic). My wife's Powerbowl was a pretty skimpy on the avocado (see picture), which was a bit disappointing when it's in the name of the dish. Overall though, we had a very pleasant experience. Also to note - my wife was a big fan of the specialty winter sangria! I did want to note that we actually came to Earls another time -- between my original review and the manager-invite visit -- for a large family group event. We had a group of around 10 adults, 3 toddlers and 2 infants, which made for a pretty difficult party I'm sure - lots of disparate food orders, lots of drinks and the overall mayhem of kids running around everywhere. Our service during this visit was FANTASTIC - the staff accommodated our party flawlessly and we never had a wait for anything. One of the waitresses also found some temporary tattoos to entertain the rambunctious toddlers. I just wanted to point this out given that they obviously had no idea I was in the party and we didn't get this experience just because of my previous negative review. Based on the quick response from the management here, the solid food and a few really strong return visits, I feel comfortable bumping Earls up to 4 stars. read more

Our first time at this location after recommendation by son. Walked around and checked out area. Walking path nice and community was well organized. Waited for 30 minutes and sat inside. Wait staff and mangers very attentive. Beer is superb in tall cold glasses. Had truffle fries, salad and clam chowder. Very good on both. Shannon was exceptional and David manager was receptive and hard working. This is great location and food selections are quite wide. Everything coming out of kitchen looked great even sushi. Everybody seemed to be having great time. We will be back even though we live hour away. Staff really made a difference. read more

happened to hop by on a Saturday night, the place was packed (naturally), loud, and warm (temperature-wise). hostess, not so much. after being asked if the two of us could just get drinks and dessert (it was around 9:45pm), she gave us the generic "any seat on the left of the room is up for grabs" spiel... are the tables on the left side of the room up for grabs too? not sure but we didn't dare. so after a quick round at the bar with zero chance of grabbing anything without getting arrested, we returned to the stand. lady didn't seem all too satisfied that she now had to offer us a table. there was no line and couple tables available. maybe she was just...overworked? waitress, on the other hand, had a better poker face. did her job sufficiently, with a bit of a smile. since our bill came out small, i tipped a bit over. friend who has come here numerous time said the other drinks she's had were no longer on the menu (ex. Bee's Knees) - next time we might just go off asking for them to be made. I settled on one (whose name i no longer remember) that is more of a bitter medicine...made better only by my friend's refreshing mule, on special for $5. should've gone and stuck with that instead. dessert was on special/seasonal menu and was good - banana bread of sort with the crunchy burnt sugar top and vanilla ice cream. wish in general they have more choices on dessert. decor is modern and classy, naturally. but the music, at that time of the day and that day of the week, gets pretty loud to this aging woman. it's understood why it was done, just that i personally preferred a slightly less upbeat ambiance. place can be hip without music blaring in one's ears. the moment we walked out, dead silence rang in our ears for instant relief. will return...if stars align again. but having seen the menu offerings and the price range, may not be too willing to wait an hour upward to get in. read more

What a disappointment! My family were famished after a long day of volunteering, chores and went to Earls Kitchen & Bar for a much need replenishment. From the beginning their was red flags. First we waited 15 minutes before being seated next to the kitchen although the place was empty. My sons ribeye steak was dry, husband shrimp cocktail was old and my lobster ravioli was questionable. There were so many flies everywhere and yes it was noticeable. We did not finish our sushi due to a fly landed in our soys sauce. The waitress was disengaged and toiled on her cellphone. I would give no starts if possible. I went here for brunch on Sunday February 25, 2018 with high hopes and great expectations! I had read their menu online and chose them over some really tough brunch contenders. I had a taste for steak and eggs and Earls menu had it so I went with them. There was a wait which is normal for brunch so no complaint there. We were seated at a nice booth and that was fantastic as well. Our waitress was sweet- young, very thin blonde- I think her name was Taylor. I ordered the steak and eggs and my friend ordered the chorizo hash (she really liked this). My friend also had two bloody Marys which she enjoyed. I think my first clue as to Earls not making the mark should have been when I asked for hot water to drink and the waitress brought it to me in a glass. This was boiling hot water which normally is put in a mug/coffee cup. I knew it was hot because she was juggling it from hand to hand, so why wouldn't she think it would be hot for a patron to manage in a glass?! I let it go because I did not want to be a high maintenance NYC girl in Somerville. (Although not burning oneself shouldn't be too much to ask) When the steak and eggs arrived I have to admit I was crestfallen! There was less steak than room in the palm of my hand. I was told that it was 6 ounces of steak- that was NOT even 3 ounces of steak. It was a few pieces hidden under the eggs. (Note it was easily unseen under the eggs that is not 6 ounces) I asked for avocado and no potatoes. I got the avocado and a plate full of potatoes. Since I was let down by the steak and knew I had a full travel day ahead of me I ordered a steak. This steak was supposed to be 10 ounces- this one looked like it was 6 ounces. It had a bare bones flavor of salt and pepper to it. I was really let down by the waitress being oblivious to my not being happy with my order and not making any amends or attempts to rectify the situation or even being proactive to have a manager speak with me. Again, I did not want to be a high maintenance NYC girl so I just decided to YELP versus cause a scene. I would have been much more impressed by the waitress if she had been somewhat proactive or even sympathetic. I ordered and paid for another whole meal- I obviously wasn't just complaining in hopes of freebies. I really wanted a complete meal. I would caution you to get exact details of your meal/portion size before you eat here. Or you could just go to another place in Assembly Row where you will get what you pay for and not leave let down and hungry! read more

The food was delicious, but knocking off a star because of their terrible host service. I recommended this place for a company lunch and we called to put our name in for a noon reservation. The host on the phone replied that "it wouldn't be busy at all, but I'll put your name down anyway." Well we show up and are told that there's a "5 minute wait for outside." We see about 3 groups placed outside in front of us and wait another 25 minutes. We only had time for a 1 hr lunch break so this was pretty rude. We go in and ask again and are finally placed outside. The food was good and our waitress was nice, which made me forget about the bad service. I ordered the spicy tuna roll, which id order again. My coworker ordered the fish and chips which he said was nothing special. Another coworker ordered the quinoa power bowl with salmon and she said it was great. It's always great when you have a dining experience that exceeds your expectations. That's what happened here. Looking over some of their past reviews, it seems like some guests are talking about a dining experience completely different than what we enjoyed tonight. Let's hope my experience here tonight is more representative of what's going on now and in the future. Typically, multi-unit restaurant operations don't deliver as well as individual operators. I never really fully accepted that, as I can make a good case as to why a multi-unit operator has a lot of advantages that single operators don't have... usually deeper pockets, experience, ability to hone down their operation to make it better and better (if they cared to that is), etc. Of course, management is key. They need to impart a feeling of caring and pride in their employees... to be dedicated to fine service... and to instill an attitude in their employees that they need to do whatever it takes to provide a great experience for their customers. Too often we don't see that... we find employees just going through the motions. Not tonight. We met Lynn MacDonald, the General Manager, having recently taken over the reins here...coming over from their other location in the area at Copley Place. Meeting her tonight it's obvious that she is dedicated and passionate about what she is doing... and from watching her in action, and our fantastic dinner, it appears her leadership has energized the operation. The restaurant looked great and had a nice "happening" feel on this very busy Saturday night. I like that they have a lot of seating options... traditional tables, larger wooden tables and different types of booths... as well as the bar area with additional seating options. The open kitchen seems a little small for a restaurant this size, but our chow came out in a timely manner on this busy night. I enjoyed seeing the wait staff polishing glasses throughout the night when they had the time... attention to detail on full display. We had a great time here. I appreciated the professional and warm greeting at check-in... and loved our circular booth...perfect for a party of 3. Our server, Sarah, was friendly and efficient and management kept an eye on the dining room throughout the night to make sure everything was going smoothly... stopping by to ask how everything was and if we needed anything. Watchful, but not intrusive. The menu is varied, something for everyone. We really loved the ribs which we ordered to share as a starter... baby backs that fall off the bone... my favorite dish... and loved the cole slaw that comes with it (be even better if they lighten up on the dressing). My wife's Salmon Zen Bowl... another winner, the fish was perfectly cooked and of excellent quality. My brother had the Spicy Tuna Dragon Roll... he loved it. My Burger (served with fries) was good... you'll enjoy it... but didn't think it was up to the excellence of the other dishes we had. Desserts are very rich... and very good. We ordered the S'mores Chocolate Cheesecake and the Key Lime Pie. Was a nice touch when the sous chef came to the table to serve our desserts. He knew what each of us ordered and asked how we liked our previous dishes. The wine list is small but well chosen... fitting the menu well. We enjoyed both of our selections... the Freemark Abbey Chardonnay and the Stonestreet Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. I'd recommend them highly. We really loved it here. Nice ambiance, casual... excellent chow, vino and service. Looking forward to returning soon. read more
