Today we found ourselves in Fredericksburg, Texas, and our favorite German eatery was closed. So as we headed toward town we spied this little BBQ place with an antiques shop attached. It turns out the antique store is shuttered closed. But the BBQ place was open with several groups dining in and getting take out. It is a small eatery but seems to have adequate indoor seating and lots of outdoor seating. Bathrooms were very clean. We stood for awhile looking at the menu and we decided on 2 pulled pork sandwiches, 2 brisket sandwiches, 2 sides of kimchi, 2 sides of cole slaw, one side of mac and cheese, 2 pecan bars, one order of 3 lemon cookies, 2 canned sodas and a small tea. Total cost with tax and 15% tip- $99 (ninety nine dollars). I went back and checked the total and they very nicely went over it and gave me a receipt. I gotta say I did not think I was spending a hundred dollars on lunch for 4 when I walked in. I think the prices might be a bit higher than I was expecting. The menu is posted for the day on butcher paper behind the counter and it was a bit confusing because we thought a side came with the sandwich. Sides were $4 each. They serve you at the counter sort of cafeteria style. They have lots of good bbq and sides options. The cashier is apparently one of the owners and one of the chefs. She makes all the desserts and sides and they were all delicious and we ate everything we ordered! The owners and employees were very Texas friendly. They are very interested in customers having a good dining experience. If I have a chance to eat there again I will try to be more informed about what I am ordering and what it costs, so I won't have any shock to my wallet. read more

Our first taste of real Texas BBQ. Super friendly staff and owners actually serving food and slicing the meats. We love that. Brisket - was on point, perfect tender, juicy flavor not overdone with smoke. No sauce needed!! Yea!! Pulled Pork - Very good, texture perfect. Jalapeno / cheddar sausage - Great! Boracho Beans - Some of the best I've had. Just awesome. Mac & cheese - Good. We loved the way the food was plated / presented with pickles, and pickled red onion. First, get there early! It was 11:15 on a Saturday and it took almost 40 minutes to order and I was the 12th person in line. The owner was the only one cutting the meat and so it took a long time, but I have to say it was worth the wait. The brisket was excellent, the Korean ribs were terrific, and the sticky pork belly burnt ends were awesome. We also had sides of the kimchi cucumber and the coleslaw. I liked the cucumber better than the coleslaw which didn't seem to have much taste. Overall, terrific barbecue! read more

I had eaten there a few times while in town a couple of years ago and thought it very good. Today it was only mediocre. I selected sliced brisket and Hill Country sausage. Both were served lukewarm even though they came straight out of a warming oven. They don't have a big selection if you don't count some exotic to my mind items, chicken for instance. read more

Eaker BBQ One of the hidden treasures of Texas Barbecue in Gillespie County. Located in Fredericksburg Texas, on the far west end of Main Street. The perfect size bbq joint. Order at the cutting board what you want by the pound, slice, link, pint or quart. Bbq has mild smoky flavors from the mesquite wood sourced from one county over in Hays. Brisket is the King of Texas bbq and Eaker's brisket did not disappoint. They are currently using Prime Akaushi, an extremely high grade of beef. The brisket was a great balance of seasoning and light smoke with distinct mesquite flavor. Both styles of pork ribs are great. I like the traditional one the best, but the gochujang rib was a very tasty treat. The sausage was simply fantastic - the snap, texture,casing, balance of salt and seasoning. The turkey was flavorful and juicy. My favorite side was the slaw - very well crafted. Kimchi fried rice was one of my other favorites. It has the authentic Korean flavor with a solid sesame oil hint. On the daily special, Korean fried chicken sandwich was a delight with a perfectly fried chicken breast richly flavored sweet and house made pickle to cut the sweetness and balance every bite. I can't wait to come back again. Wait in the line was not bad - about a 4 minute wait from the door. Remember to be patient. It's a small town and extra staffing for weekends is not really an option . Please don't miss this great small town business where one of the owners is always present. First time, ordered the Kimchi Rice with Brisket and it did not disappoint. Spice level was perfect, brisket was chopped up in small bits for a great bite, salty and spicy but so delicious!! The portion was also filling. This dish alone is worth returning over and over for. The barbecue was quite good, but the experience left something to be desired. The line moved slowly because the meat cutter wasn't efficient, handling orders with little urgency. When I finally reached the front, I specifically asked for moist brisket. Initially, I was given what I requested, but then the meat cutter, somewhat surreptitiously, switched back to lean brisket after slicing only a couple of pieces of moist. This was disappointing, as moist brisket was the main reason for my visit. While the rest of the staff was friendly, the meat cutter--who might have been one of the owners--seemed to favor certain customers and didn't seem to appreciate my business. Because of this poor service, I would rate my experience 2.5 out of 5 stars. Despite the fair prices and good sides, the shiftiness of the meat cutter and the lack of appreciation for all customers were significant drawbacks. Also, their burnt ends are not brisket but pork, which was a major letdown. I didn't realize this until I had already started eating them. read more

Hugely overpriced food. It is not a Michelin star restaurant by any means but their prices on par with some expensive restaurants in New York, London, Paris or Tokyo. So, we arrived here later for lunch, approximately 130 PM, and as suspected, they were out of most everything. I was able to squeeze some brisket out of them which was delicious; most of the sides were also sold out. I had the creamed corn which looked like creamed corn which had been sitting in a steamer for 4 hours, but was lukewarm and just so-so. We saw several couples arrive, walk in and leave immediately, so I naturally assume they wanted something which was "out". Perhaps if you go early, there will be likely to have a better selection. And the food here is so good that it ought to be illegal! $56.85 purchased a half pound of Gochujang pork ribs (3), a half pound of brisket (fatty end), and half pint sides of mac 'n cheese, cream corn, kimchi, and kimchi fried rice. The four sides are all outstanding... a vegetarian could dine well here. The brisket is moist and tender, with a central Texas rub that is tilted slightly to the peppery side, with superb bark. The ribs are beautifully spiced and authentically Korean ... yum! We went back for additional pints of the kimchi and kimchi fried rice to carry out for dinner, along with a plump and tasty jalapeno cheddar sausage. Alas, the boozy banana pudding never made it out the door. It is sinfully good, and one of the two best that we have found anywhere in Texas. read more

We dropped in at just after 1pm on a Thursday and there were already a ton of things sold out- which is an indication they are doing something right! We ordered brisket, jalapeño sausage, creamed corn and potato salad. The brisket had a pepper crust that was a delightful surprise and not something we had encountered in the Austin/ Lockhart area where we are from. It was tender and a good combo of fatty and lean bites. The sausage had an excellent snap and good flavor, zero complaints there. What was unexpected was the love put into the sides, which can often seem like an afterthought at other bbq places. The potato salad was a perfect mix of creamy Mayo, potato and egg. The creamed corn was heavenly- well seasoned deliciousness!! We got there at the tail end of their shift and had a minute to chat with one of the owners. Very nice folks and a welcoming space. If you are looking for real, Texas barbecue for dinner, don't come here. According to the menu on their wall, they only serve barbecue during lunch. Apparently at night it becomes a Korean restaurant or something like that because there was no barbecue on the dinner menu. From the beginning I heard about this place as being in top 50 BBQ in Texas so I made the 2 hour drive to Eaker BBQ we arrived at 10:30 when they open at 11am. We were number 4 in line. Doors opened right on time at 11am. By then there was twenty people behind us. "That's a good sign" the groups in front of us was buying pounds and pounds of BBQ my thought we are at a good place. It was finally my turn to order the girl taking my order was so friendly and energetic which later I found out was one of the owners. Took my order Brisket, Wet Ribs, regular sausage. Sides Mac n Cheese and potato salad. I sat down and attacked the plate which every bite simply amazing. We were greeted at our table by the owner Lance, who sat down with us and explained his passion for BBQ cans were they started and how they got to where they are at today. If you get a chance to talk with Lance I highly recommend it. Since we knew people in common he went out of his was and gave a tour of where the perfection comes from. Wow! Eaker Has taken the Fredericksburg (well, for that matter, the Texas Hill Country) by storm. The food is absolutely amazing - brisket is some of the best I've ever eaten, the Gochujang ribs have just the right level of spice and creativity, and don't skip the sides.
